Se estudian mediante ultrasonografía las caderas de 112 recién nacidos (224 caderas) con signos clínicos de displasia luxante de cadera. Los resultados se comparan con los datos de exploración clínica y estudio radiográ- fico poniendo en evidencia las limitaciones diagnósticas de las maniobras exploratorias clásicas y la radiografía. Accumulation and discharge behavior of Cs-137 by zebra fish (Brachydanio rerio) in different aquatic environments

The uptake and release kinetics of137Cs from water by the tropical fishBrachydanio rerio has been studied under controlled laboratory condition. The accumulation of this radionuclide from food was avoided by feeding the fishes separately in an inactive environment. A steep inverse dependence of bioconcentration factor (BCF) with potassium concentration has been observed. This can formally be described by the equation BCF=5.2 · [K+]−0.44. The elimination rate constant K in fresh water conditions has been found to have a magnitude of 0.014±0.03 d−1 which corresponds to a biological half-life of 51±10 days. Numerical analysis of density gradient centrifugation profiles from eukaryotic DNA

A numerical method for the deconvolution of superimposed Gaussian distributions with a unique solution has been proposed by Medgyessy [10]. We have tested the usefulness of this method for the analysis of density gradient centrifugation profiles from eukaryotic DNA, which are normally composed from overlapping Gaussian distributed profiles of several subcomponents with different mean buoyant densities. From the analysis of human DNA and from model calculations we conclude that major subcomponents can be identified by this method, if they differ in their buoyant density by approximatly 0.005 g/ml. Coronary drainage in theOctopus vulgaris systemic heart

The vascular architecture of the coronary system of the systemic heart of the octopus (Octopus vulgaris) has been studied by means of both the corrosion-cast method and scanning electron microscopy. It is shown that the Octopus systemic heart myocardium is supplied through a very rich capillary network, the complexity of which probably reflects the complex organization of the ventricular wall. Drainage occurs by way of a classic venous system that originates from this capillary network. Morphological evidences are reported indicating that the coronary bed communicates directly with the ventricular lumen. Abstract The conditions for alternating current (a.c.) voltammetric DNA determinations have been investigated with respect to its use with alkaline filter elution techniques at low DNA concentrations. In inorganic electrolyte solutions three current peaks can be distinguished: peak I around −1.1 V caused by the reorientation or desorption of DNA segments; peak II around −1.2 V caused by the native DNA (nDNA) form; peak III caused by denatured DNA (dDNA) at −1.4 V. Sonication of nDNA increases the peak current, however not with dDNA. Several studies have shown that HLA-B8,DR3 positive subjects may display T cell dysfunctions. Recently, a soluble form of the receptor for IL-2 (sIL-2R) has been demonstrated in human sera and in vitro-stimulated culture supernatant from human T lymphocytes. In the present paper we report sIL-2R serum levels and sIL-2R production from peripheral blood mononuclear cells in HLA-B8,DR3 positive subjects. We found that HLA-B8,DR3 positive subjects have the highest values of serum sIL-2R, but comparing the values of these subjects with those of negative ones no significant difference was observed. We report single grain and grain-domain U−Pb zircon ages for the Tojottamanselka tonalitic gneiss previously investigated by the whole-rock Rb−Sr, Pb−Pb and Sm−Nd methods, by conventional U−Pb zircon density/size fraction analysis and by Hf-isotopes (Kroner et al. 1981; Patchett et al. 1981; Jahn et al. 1984) and established as one of the oldest known rocks of the Baltic shield. Our data confirm the intrusive age as 3115±29 Ma (standard error), but we also found slightly older xenocrystic zircon cores with 207Pb/206Pb ages between 3161±19 and 3248±10 Ma that may either be derived from earlier phases of the tonalite melt or from pre-tonalite sialic crust. Chlorinated and methylated dibenzothiophenes: Preparation of the model compounds and their analysis from some environmental samples

Abstract Polychlorinated and polymethylated dibenzothiophenes if occuring in the environment can cause environmental hazards and problems like chlorinated dibenzodioxins and dibenzofurans. Some chlorinated and methylated dibenzothiophenes have been synthesized to serve as model compounds in environmental and toxicological analysis. The synthesis mixtures and some environmental samples have been analyzed by high resolution GC/low resolution MS. This investigation showed that the concentrations of these compounds in environmental samples were below ppb level but it did not exclude the occurence of these compounds in our environment. More investigation is needed.

SUMMARY An approximation to the maximum likelihood estimates of the parameters in a model can be obtained from the corresponding estimates and information matrices in an extended model, i.e. a model with additional parameters. The approximation is close provided that the data are consistent with the first model. Applications are described to log linear models for discrete data, to models for multivariate normal distributions with special covariance matrices and to mixed discrete-continuous models.

Administration of oral glutathione (GSH) increases hepatic GSH levels in fasted rats, in mice treated with GSH depletors such as diethylmaleate and in mice treated with high doses of paracetamol. An increase in hepatic GSH levels after administration of oral GSH does not occur in animals treated with buthionine suphoximine, an inhibitor of GSH synthesis. Administration of oral GSH leads to an increase in the concentration of L-cysteine, a precursor of GSH, in portal blood plasma. Oral administration of L-methio-nine to fasted rats produced a significant decrease of hepatic ATP, but not in fed rats. Administration of N-acetyl-cysteine or GSH did not affect the hepatic ATP levels. The results…

The brainstem of the electric fish Eigenmannia virescens contains a small number of neural networks projecting directly onto the motoneuron pools of the spinal cord such that each segment is reached by at least one neuron of all the networks. Quantitative data of movement patterns, recorded from freely moving animals as well as elicited by electrical stimulation of the single networks, suggest that each network contains a full program for a particular movement, e. g. bending of the body axis to one side. The age of the male insect at the moment of treatment with juvenile hormone I (JH I), JH III or ecdysone has no influence on the induction of the female-specific bands in male S. pandurus. 3. 3. Male insects exposed to the hormones for periods of time longer than 24 hr were also unable to show female-specific bands in their haemolymph. Consecutive treatments with JH were unable to induce these peptides in the males.

The conditions for the inverse-voltammetric determination of cadmium, lead, and copper in various biological samples after solubilization with Texapon are described. The results of this procedure are compared with those obtained with conventional high- and low-pressure wet digestions. The advantages of the Hg-film electrode as compared to the stationary Hg-electrode are discussed.

Searches for the standard Higgs boson

Abstract A data sample corresponding to about 100 000 hadronic Z decays collected by ALEPH at LEP has been used to search for the standard Higgs boson produced in the reaction e + e − → H 0 Z 0∗ . No indication for any signal was found, and a 95% CL lower limit on the Higgs boson mass has been set at 41.6 GeV.
