Digitalis spp.: In Vitro Production of Haploids

Digitalis, a member of the Scrophulariaceae, is composed of biennial or perennial herbs and occasionally of small shrubs. Several Digitalis species are used therapeutically, as they are a source of cardiac glycosides. The importance and distribution of these species are summarized below, with special attention to D. purpurea, D. lanata and D. obscura. For a detailed review see Thtin et al. (1972), Morton (1977), and Font Quer (1978).

Los autores presentan un estudio comparativo de E.M.G. y Saculorradiculografía en relación con los hallazgos quirúrgicos de 100 Hernias Discales intervenidas. Para el E.M.G. se ha conseguido una exactitud global del 83% y para la saculorradiculografía del 79%. La saculorradiculografía ha demostrado mayor exactitud para la raiz S1 que paral a L5 (85,7% frente a 70,4%) y el E.M.G. mayor para la L5 que para la S1 (88,6% frente a 78,5%). El E.M.G. tiene una especial utilidad para el diagnóstico y despistaje de neuropatías y para la comprobación de recuperación post-quirúrgica de lesiones sin axonotmesis. MACOP-B chemotherapy for the treatment of high grade and intermediate grade non Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Between Nov. 1985 and Nov. 1988, sixty-three patients with high grade malignant (hg) and intermediate grade malignant (img) Non Hodgkin's Lymphoma (NHL) were treated with MACOP-B (methotrexate, doxorubicin, cyclophosphamide, vincristine, prednisone and bleomycin). Thirty-seven patients received MACOP-B as an upfront treatment modality, whereas twenty-six patients had relapsed disease and received MACOP-B as a salvage protocol. Four weeks after termination of therapy, 75% of patients with de novo NHL and 72% of the patients with relapsed NHL were in complete remission (CR). El tratamiento de elección debe ser la escisión ampliada siempre que ésta sea posible, siendo los resultados satisfactorios. Six cases of haemangioma arising in skeletal muscle are described. The aetiology, pathology, diagnosis and treatment of thes e tumours are discussed. Wide excision remains the treatment of choice whereve r possible with satisfactory results.

The use of hypervariable DNA minisatellite probes recognizing repetitive genomic DNA sequences has become a valuable and powerful tool in paternity testing as well as in forensic stain analysis (Jeffreys et al. 1985, 1987; Werrett et al. 1988). It has been shown that bacteriophage Ml3 DNA can also be used to obtain hypervariable DNA restriction fragment patterns in humans and other species (Vassart et al. 1987). To obtain more informative and specific fragment patterns for the DNA ‘fingerprint’ analysis in man, we have used Ml3 DNA as a probe to screen a human genomic library. Abstract Organically bound chlorine together with inorganic chloride was measured from dated bottom sediment layers of 18 lakes in Central Finland and compared to organic matter contents. Pulp mills were found to be the source of significant increase of the accumulation of all of these materials in the 20th century.

The pattern of free and antibody-complexed HIV antigen and the antibody profile were investigated retrospectively in 305 serum samples taken from 22 AIDS patients before and during the development of AIDS and from 40 apparently healthy seropositive individuals. Most AIDS patients were found positive for both free and complexed antigen and had high gp41 antibody titres but low or undetectable p24 antibody. Community response to environmental noise in Valencia

Abstract In Valencia, Spain, 263 residents were interviewed at five different locations in order to investigate the subjective response to environmental noise in urban areas. External noise levels were measured over five consecutive days at each site. Noise levels were high in two of the selected sites ( L eq 24h about 75 dBA) and lower in the other two ( L eq 24h about 65 dBA). The fifth location had a night noise problem because of the presence of many leisure places (pubs, restaurants, etc.). A Search for Sleptons and Gauginos in Z0 Decays

Using a data sample corresponding to 10 000 hadronic Z0 decays, we have searched for the production of sleptons and gauginos in the two-prong decays of Z0. No candidate remains after straightforward selections. For neutralinos, we use selection methods developed in our previous search for neutral Higgs particles. The negative results are translated into improved mass limits and parameter constraints on the minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard model.

Structural studies make it possible to reconstruct the metamorphic and deformation history of a rock body but do not provide information on the absolute timing of these processes. Likewise, field observations and structural work alone may not unambiguously identify the protoliths of many high-grade gneisses or the compositional changes associated with migmatisation, anatexis and the general action of fluid and/or vapour phases in a rock. Geochemical research can answer many of these problems but, as most of this research is laboratory-oriented, we limit ourselves to some general outlines of the possible lines of research, so that these can be borne in mind during fieldwork.

Prevalence of human rotavirus serotypes in some European countries 1981-1988.

An extended epidemiological survey on the circulation of the 4 established human rotavirus (HRV) serotypes in some European countries was carried out on 831 fecal strains collected from infants and young children with acute non-bacterial gastroenteritis during 1981-88. Typing was done by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and/or solid-phase immune electron microscopy using VP7 type-specific neutralizing monoclonal antibodies. Serotype 1 HRV strains were found to be largely predominant in this period both in Italy and other countries, whereas serotype 4 strains were less common. Measurements of Collisional Line Widths in the Stimulated Raman Q-Branch of the v1 Band of Silane

0377-0486; Self-broadened widths of 28SiH4 in the v1 Q-branch have been measured at room temperature (295 K) using high-resolution stimulated Raman spectroscopy. These collisional widths have been obtained by fitting a superposition of Voigt profiles to the experimental spectra in the pressure range 28-154 Torr. No evidence for line mixing within the tetrahedral components of a Q(J) line has been found. The line broadening coefficients for J up to 13 depend weakly on the rotational quantum number. The mean value is 103.7 x 10(-3) cm-1 atm-1.

In connection with the new type of forest damage, the individual disease situation of two-year-old spruce (Picea abies) needles was analyzed histopathologically in forest areas exposed to different levels of O3-, SO2- and NO3- pollution. Early damage results from losses of chlorophyll in the mesophyll cells. The bleaching is more intensive towards the apex in severely damaged needles. The cytoplasm is aggregated at the cell wall and the chloroplasts show definite structural damage as well. The quantization of the Virasoro group is carried out by means of a previously established group approach to quantization. We explicitly work out the two-cocycles on the Virasoro group as a preliminary step. In our scheme the carrier space for all the Virasoro representations is made out of polarized functions on the group manifold. Abstract A systematic study of the impedance behaviour of the anodic niobium oxide film/aqueous electrolyte interface was carried out using the lock-in technique at different signal frequencies. The dependence of both components of the impedance on the electrode potential and on frequency is analysed by taking into account the amorphous nature of the films. The lack of long-range order in these oxide layers modifies the physical picture in respect to the case of single crystal semiconductors. The mechanics of continuous chip formation in oblique cutting with single-edged tool—part II. Experimental verification of the theory

Abstract Experimental results obtained during oblique cutting of annealed steel Ck 45 (SAE-AISI 1045) with a single-edged tool are presented. Extensive measurements of forces, cutting ratio, chip flow angle etc. have been carried out under a wide range of cutting conditions. The measured data obtained from these cutting tests are used to test assumptions proposed in the first part of this work. In relation to previous works dealing with oblique cutting problems the present one extends to tools with angles of tool obliquity ranging from 30° to 70° and having a large negative rake angle.
