A comparison of jet production rates on the Z0 resonance to perturbative QCD

The production rates for 2-, 3-, 4- and 5-jet hadronic final states have been measured with the DELPHI detector at the e+e- storage ring LEP at centre of mass energies around 91.5 GeV. Fully corrected data are compared to O(αs 2) QCD matrix element calculations and the QCD scale parameter ΛMS is determined for different parametrizations of the renormalization scale μ2. Including all uncertainties our result is αs(MZ 2)=0.114±0.003[stat.]±0.004[syst.]±0.012[theor.] .

The bactericidal activity of normal serum was first described by Buchner in 1889 (10). This effect is abolished when serum has been incubated for 30 min at 56°C. Gram positives are less sensitive than Gram negative bacteria to direct killing, although gram positive cocci are opsonized by the action of serum mediated by antibodies and complement (22). The effects on development time of larval competition that is interrupted at different times are analyzed in an experiment with constant larval density and varying proportions of two competing strains. Abstract Hippocampal slices from rat brain were exposed to histamine and related substances in a perfusion chamber. Granule cells of the dentate gyrus were studied with conventional extra- and intracellular recording and a single electrode voltage clamp. Histamine caused, through activation of H 2 -receptors, a small depolarization, an increase in the number of synaptic and action potentials, a block of the long lasting (but not the early) component of spike afterhyperpolarizations and a reduction of the accommodation of action potential firing. Determination of titanium by adsorption-voltammetry with 2-(5-bromo-2-pyridylazo)-5-(diethylamino)-phenol (5-Br-PADAP)

The 1:1 complex between titanium (IV) and 5-Br-PADAP can be used to determine titanium by adsorption voltammetry at a stationary Hg-electrode. The experimental conditions for the determination are described. The detection limit is 3×10−10 mol/l Ti (0.015 ppb). Calibration curves are linear for solutions containing 4×10−10 to 5×10−8 mol/l Ti(IV) and an enrichment time of 3 min. The influence of foreign ions was investigated. The determination can be carried out in the presence of a 5000-fold excess of iron.

‘Synaptic’ Bodies in the Pineal Glands of the Cow, Sheep and Pig

The present results show that ‘synaptic’ bodies (SB) are a heterogeneous group of organelles in the pineal glands of Artiodactyla. Basically, rod-like (ribbons) and sphere-like (spherules) SB can be distinguished. In the pig small numbers of both ‘synaptic’ ribbons (SR) and ‘synaptic’ spherules (SS) are found. In bovine and ovine pineal glands few SS but no SR were seen. The same results were obtained from animals of the same species but from different continents. This suggests that the numbers of SB are species specific rather than influenced by the different lighting conditions in Europe and in equatorial Africa.

Abstract It has been suggested that the non-random mating often observed in lekking species is a consequence of either male-male competition or active female mate choice. Here we show that the highly skewed mating distributions observed in a black grouse lek in three years were indeed different from random expectations. We suggest that females copying the mate choice of others enhance this skew. We have performed a search for supersymmetric particles using acoplanar pairs of oppositely-charged particles in decays of the Z0. In 0.53 pb−1 of integrated luminosity near the Z0 peak, we observe two events where approximately four are expected from background, allowing limits to be extended on combined photino and slepton masses, and also on combined photino and chargino masses.

Durante los años de la guerra civil (1936-39) y la inmediata postguerra, Borriana-al igual que otros municipios situados en la retaguardia republicana- acogió a un nutrido grupo de inmigrados. Los inmigrados, entre los que predominaban refugiados, militares y prisioneros políticos, modificaron temporalmente los tradicionales saldos negativos. Para esta localidad agrícola de la Plana, las consecuencias se tradujeron en el empeoramiento de los problemas de abastecimiento y en una profunda transformación de la estructura profesional, ya que entre los inmigrados el sector terciario ocupaba a la mayor parte de los activos.

L’absència generalitzada de documentació relativa a l’actuació processal diària del mostassaf, oficial de l’organització municipal valenciana, s’explica pel caràcter sumari de les seues decisions i la circumscripció a l’àmbit de l’oralitat, prescrita explícitament per la legislació foral. Tanmateix i de forma excepcional, d’un període breu, els anys 1571 a 1578, i en un lloc rural, Sueca, aquest oficial deixà constància escrita de la seua actuació, cosa que ens permet reconstruir l’estructura del procediment judicial seguit pel mostassaf i la tipologia de les causes dirimides, així com de les penes imposades.

Reduction of negative alliesthesia for sweet gustatory stimuli by cyproheptadine, a serotonin antagonist

Cyproheptadine (CH) is a serotonin antagonist that increases food intake and body weight. In order to elucidate its mechanism of action on the control of food intake, hunger ratings, pleasure-displeasure to sweet gustatory stimuli and negative alliesthesia induced by a 50 g glucose load were compared in 14 healthy subjects after they had received a placebo or 16 mg of CH. Cyproheptadine did not affect the hunger rating, nor the affective rating in fasted subjects, but it reduced significantly the negative alimentary alliesthesia induced by the glucose load.
