Neuropeptides in Primary Afferent Neurons

1990

Traditionally, the primary sensory neurons, having their perikarya in the spinal or cranial sensory ganglia with processes directed towards the periphery and the central nervous system, have been regarded to function as receptive and afferent systems which reflexly activate central effector systems.1 This, however, does not apply to the small diameter primary afferents as suggested by the observation made about a century ago that antidromic stimulation of transected dorsal roots or sensory nerves caused vasodilatation and inflammatory signs in the skin.2,3 The novel concept which has been confirmed by many investigators ascribes to small diameter (particularly unmyelinated C) primary sensor…

Mathematical Foundations of the Dimensional Method

1990

We summarize and discuss important mathematical foundations concerning the dimensional method. To this end we carefully discuss the assumptions as well as the derived fundamental statements. We define and investigate the uniqueness of the ϵμνστ tensor in n dimensions and, related to this, the uniqueness of γ5. Furthermore, we develop an algorithm which allows the calculation of a set of scalar multi-loop integrals with masses in a systematic way. To demonstrate and test the algorithm we rederive a set of scalar integrals which are important in calculations at the one and two loop level. C4 DNA RFLP reference typing report.

1990

One hundred and three individual DNA samples (including 23 families) were studied at the gene level during the reference typing of the fourth component of human complement at the VIth Complement Genetics Workshop in Mainz (1989). All samples were analyzed with the restriction enzyme Taq I and with two DNA probes recognizing the 5' ends of both C4 genes and the two adjacent 21-hydroxylase genes. This RFLP is informative for the number of C4 genes as well as for their respective gene size. We found a high degree of variation regarding the number of C4 genes, i.e. haplotypes with 1-3 structural C4 genes of 16 or 22 kb size. By correlating these haplotypes to the complotypes obtained by protein…

Problems in neutrino physics

1990

The three “known” neutrinos νe νµ and ντ, as well as their postulated heavy companions, have been the subject of intense experimental and theoretical research over the last decade. And yet, all the basic questions that we raised when the first, controversial, results on the mass of electron neutrino from triton beta decay were announced and when the new generation of experiments on lepton family changing processes started, remain essentially unanswered, in spite of the impressive effort that went into neutrino research [1]. So we may just repeat some of these questions and then see what we know about them and what remains to be done.

Modeling of Cell Membrane Targeting: Specific Recognition, Binding, and Protein Domain Formation in Ligand-Containing Model Biomembranes

1990

Drug delivery systems are designed to assist, accelerate, and control transport of pharmacologically active agents from sites of administration to specified targets in organs and tissues. So-called controlled drug delivery systems are intended to maintain continuously efficacious drug concentrations in vivo, either locally or systemically, over longer time periods. They should provide constant dosage levels above a minimum level of efficacy yet below mandated toxicity levels — a significant advantage over many conventional systemically administered formulations. Site-specific targeting of drugs, particularly those agents which prove highly toxic in small doses, can be utilized to maintain t…

P̅P annihilation at rest: annihilation dynamics and meson spectroscopy

1990

Proton-antiproton annihilations provide an excellent tool to study the dynamics of quarks and gluons in the confinement region. Annihilations at rest into two mesons show selection rules which can be related to symmetries between SU(3) invariant amplitudes. In the annihilation process not only conventional (q\(\bar{\text{q}}\)) mesons are produced but also states which do not fit into the meson nonets. It is shown how knowledge of the atomic state of the pp system at annihilation can be used to restrict the possible quantum numbers of meson resonances.

Validation of a very simple model for computing global solar radiation in the European, African, Asian and North American areas

1990

Abstract In a previous paper Coppolino has proposed a very simple model for predicting the monthly mean daily global solar radiation G (MJm −2 day −1 ) at any Italian location using as input only the sunshine duration s (hours) and the noon altitude of the sun on the 15th of the month h n (degrees). The correlation suggested is G = 7.8 s 0.5 (sin h n ) 1.15 . Herein the validity of this model is verified by extending its application to dat from 24 stations displaced at various latitudes, altitudes above sea level and geographical situations in the European, African, Asian and North American areas. Furthermore the validity of this model to fit the data of the tested stations is compared with…

Fabric Development in Gneiss Terrains

1990

This chapter describes some aspects of the development of fabrics in gneiss terrains. It provides essential background information that should be read before attempting to map a gneiss terrain. Inevitably, the interpretations are ‘state of the art’ and not necessarily the absolute answer. Additional information can be found in the cited literature and various specialised journals such as the Journal of Structural Geology, the Journal of Metamorphic Geology, Tectonophysics, Tectonics and Precambrian Research.

Nature of the phase transition in spin crossover compounds

1990

Abstract Starting from the phenomenological free energy describing the spin equilibrium of continuous or gradual high spin (HS) ⇌ low spin (LS) transitions a reduced equation of state has been derived which is of the type known in mean field theories. The continuous HS ⇌ LS transitions of [Fe(2-pic-ND 2 ) 3 ]Cl 2 ·EtOD (2-pic = 2-picolylamine) at ambient pressure and p = 1200 bar and of [Fe(2-pic) 3 ]Cl 2 -MeOH can be classified as isobars above the critical point of the system. Around and below the critical point a complex behaviour is expected for thermodynamic reasons combined with the consequences of an elastic interaction mechanism between the HS and LS complex molecules in the crystal…

Information asymmetries and supplier induced demand (an economic study for the french market)

1990

The supplier induced demand hypothesis relies on the existence of information asymmetry between the physician and his patient. This asymmetry confers a discretionary power on practitioners who are using it in order to satisfy their own interest. The inducement effect is identified and distinguished from the other consequences of information asymmetries in the health care system, i.e. moral hazard and adverse selection. A controversy is generated by the induced demand hypothesis which constitutes a challenge to the assumption of the independence of supply and demand and, therefore, contradicts standard neoclassical predictions. The role of empirical studies is important in this respect. An e…

A laboratory study on the scavenging of SO2 by snow crystals

1990

Abstract A laboratory experiment is described where the uptake of SO2 by dendritic snow crystals was studied. In a first experimental series the uptake of SO2 was investigated during the growth of the snow crystals from water vapor with and without the presence of H2O2 in the air. In a second series of experiments we studied the uptake of SO2 by snow crystals which had completed their growth. The results of our experiments showed that under both conditions SO2 became scavenged by snow crystals. The uptake of SO2 was particularly pronounced during the growth of the snow crystals, and at temperatures close to 0°C where a quasi-liquid layer exists at the surface of ice. As expected, the SO2 up…

Biosynthesis of Lipopolysaccharide-Binding Protein in Rabbit Hepatocytes

1990

Studies reported here show that the recently discovered acute-phase protein, lipopolysaccharide-binding protein (LBP), is synthesized by hepatocytes. For these studies, explanted rabbit hepatocytes were grown in the presence of 35S-methionine. Biosynthetically labelled LBP in the cells and supernatant was identified using immunoprecipitation with rat anti-rabbit LBP antibody. This antibody immunoprecipitates both the LBP polypeptide and the glycosylated protein. With a cell-free translation system a comparison of RNA from normal rabbit liver with that isolated from acute-phase rabbit liver indicated that a translatable LBP message is only found in the RNA from acute-phase liver. Studies wit…

LR(k) Parsing

1990

In this chapter we shall generalize the notion of strong LL(k) parsing presented in Chapter 5 and consider a method for deterministic left parsing that applies to a slightly wider class of context-free grammars than does the strong LL(k) parsing method. This method will be called “canonical LL(k) parsing”. As in strong LL(k) parsing, the acronym “LL(k)” means that the input string is parsed (1) in a single Left-to-right scan, (2) producing a Left parse, and (3) using lookahead of length k.

An investigation of the spot profiles in transmission electron diffraction from Langmuir-Blodgett films of aliphatic chain compounds

1990

The profiles of the transmission diffraction spots from a Langmuir-Blodgett film of aliphatic chain compound are derived from three plausible models of molecular organisation : a polycrystalline phase with long-range orientational order; a paracrystal possessing a density of point defects which do not interrupt the lattice rows ; and a Nelson and Halperin hexatic smectic phase in the «Debye-Huckel» limit of weakly-interacting dislocations. The three resulting predictions are distinctly different. Experimental results are presented for the room-temperature diffraction patterns from Langmuir-Blodgett films of a lipid, DMPE, and the cadmium soap of a fatty acid, 22-tricosenoic. Only the Nelson…

Distribution of type I and type II collagen gene expression during the development of human long bones

1990

The temporal and spatial gene expression of collagen type I and type II during the development of the human long bones was studied by the technique of in situ hybridization covering the period from the cartilagenous bone anlage to the formation of a regular growth plate in the newborn. Analysis of the early stages around the seventh week of gestation revealed for type II collagen a strong hybridization signal limited to the chondrogenic tissue. The surrounding connective tissue and the perichondrium showed weak type I collagen expression, while the zones of desmal ossification like the clavicle gave a strong signal. Beginning with the eighth week of gestation, type I collagen mRNA was detec…

A comparative study of naproxen gel and flufenamic acid gel in the treatment of soft tissue injuries.

1990

One hundred patients were enrolled in a single-blind, randomized, parallel group study to compare naproxen gel (10%) with flufenamic acid gel (3%) for the treatment of soft tissue injuries. Demographic variables, the distribution of diagnoses (tendinitis, bursitis/synovitis, synovitis, periarthritis, epicondylitis) and initial severity of the complaint were similar between the two groups. The gels were applied 2 to 6 times per day, as required, and conventional clinical indices were evaluated at Day 1 (on entry to the study), Day 3 and Day 7. Global assessments of efficacy were made by both physicians and patients at the end of the study. By Day 7 both treatments had produced a highly signi…

Spermidine and morphogenesis in single cell cultures of Sideritis angustifolia lag.

1990

Abstract Single cells from hypocotyl-derived callus of Sideritis angustifolia were evaluated for morphogenesis when cultured in either solidifier or liquid Murashige and Skoog medium supplemented with various concentrations of spermidine, naphthaeneacetic acid (NAA), benzyladenine (BA) and dicyclohexylamine (DCHA). Spermidine (Spd) did not replace the hormonal requirements for cell division and callus formation, but affected growth induced by NAA or BA. This polyamine increased the plating efficiency of cells cultured in the presence of NAA (0.05, 0.54 and 5.40 μM) or BA (0.40, 4.40 and 8.80 μM). In contrast, Spd reduced growth induced by 10.80 μM NAA, optimal auxin concentration for callus…

Search for excited neutrinos in Z decay

1990

Excited neutrinos decaying into a neutrino and a photon are searched for in the ALEPH detector at LEP. No evidence is found for Z decay into vv∗ or v∗v∗ final states. Upper limits are derived on excited neutrino couplings up to excited neutrino masses close to the Z mass. Lower limits on the v∗ mass, independent of the v∗ decay modes, are deduced from the total Z width.

A 5-Year Follow-Up Study of Psychotherapy

1990

This 5-year study examined students who were in individual psychotherapy. The specific interest of the study was in the stability of changes in their self-concept after psychotherapy. Students who were patients at the Dental Health Care Unit were used as a control group. Self-concept was measured by a multidimensional measure which consisted of four dependent variables: symptoms, Beck’s Depression Inventory, self-image test and general progress during therapy. Changes in self-concept were presented as change profiles which showed that statistically significant changes had occurred in the experimental group during the 5-year follow-up study. However, the profile of the control group remained…
