The authors r…

Rearranged abietane diterpenoids from the root of teucrium polium subsp. vincentinum

1990

Abstract From the root of Teucrium polium subsp. vincentinum (Labiatae) four new rearranged abietane derivatives, teuvincenones A, B, C, and D (1-4, respectively), have been isolated. Two of these compounds, teuvincenones C (3) and D (4), possess a novel hydrocarbon skeleton which contains a cyclopropane ring constituted by the C-3, C-4, and C-18 carbons of the 17(15→16)-abeo-abietane framework. The structures of these diterpenoids were established mainly by spectroscopic means and, in the case of teuvincenones A (1) and C (3), also confirmed by X-ray diffraction analyses.

Phenotypic Flexibility in the Social Organization of Clethrionomys

1990

I review the flexibility of social organization and spacing behavior in Clethrionomys. This review is based on a 6-year comparative study and several experimental studies on cyclic populations of the bank vole, C. glareolus, in Central Finland. The social organization of Clethrionomys populations shows great flexibility during both the breeding and nonbreeding season, and is dependent on habitat patchiness, food availability, Predation, kinship, philopatry, and familiarity between individuals. The first three factors are most important in destabilizing a population, whereas the last three stabilize a population without exhausting its resources. Female territoriality can weaken in a producti…

The molecular architecture of the thylakoid membrane from various classes of eukaryotic algae

1990

There is convincing consensus that the photosynthetic apparatus is of prokaryotic origin. The wide variety of algal plastids is mostly assumed to be the result of different endocytological events. Chloroplasts surrounded by two membranes as in rhodophytes and chlorophytes were considered as the association of a prokaryotic symbiont and a eukaryotic host, whereas algae having a chloroplast surrounded with more than two membranes can be delineated from an endocytological event of two eukaryotes (see S. Gibbs in this volume). Since chlorophyll b was neither combined with chlorophyll c nor with phycobiliproteins it was proposed that all present day chloroplasts can be integrated in three lines.…

Electrochemical Syntheses Involving Carbon Dioxide

1990

The recent developments of electrosynthetic processes involving carbon dioxide are reviewed. Both processes involving carbon dioxide alone and electrocarboxylations are taken under consideration. The first of these two fields, mainly projected towards the production of basic chemicals such as methanol or carbon monoxide, is at present at a stage of fundamental research. Some interesting developments have recently appeared in the literature, concerning the use of electrode materials, or of transition metal complexes with particular catalytic activity. Electrocarboxylations are at a stage of more applicative development: some processes have reached the stage of pilot plant, and other have int…

Spinal cord monitoring during intraspinal extramedullary tumor operations (Peroneal nerve evoked responses)

1990

Longterm scalp recording of early SEP components triggered by peroneal or tibial nerve stimulation detects functional disturbances of spinal cord transmission due to mechanical trauma. We confirm previous observations that preoperative SEP patterns reflect neurological deficits and clearly show functional disturbances even on the side where they are not manifest. Peroneal nerve SEP have a well-known P40-peak corresponding to activities of neurons at the postcentral cortical layers. The P40-peak was identified in only 55% of our recordings. We therefore, tried to use the P50-peak that could be identified in 100% of the recordings under the difficult recording circumstances in the operating r…

Production of pionic atoms with the ( pi -, pi +) reaction

1990

We have evaluated the cross section for the π-+A→π++(Aπ-) reaction in heavy nuclei producing deeply bound π- atom states still unobserved. The cross sections found, although in the measurable range, are only a small fraction of the background from the inclusive (π-,π+) reaction, which makes this experiment not very suited for the investigation of these elusive pionic states.

1990

Abstract Three groups of male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed for 4 weeks purified diets containing 15% by weight of oil mixtures varying in the nature and content of (n-3) polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) but supplying similar levels of 18:2 (n-6) (10% of the total dietary fatty acids) and of saturated fatty acids (19% of the total fatty acids). The First diet (“Low 18:3”) contained small amounts of 18:3 (0.5% of the total fatty acids), the second (“18:3”) contained linolenic acid (10% of the total fatty acids) as the only source of (n-3) PUFA and the third one (“LC (n-3)”) contained the same amount of long chain (n-3) PUFA (mainly 20:5 and 22:6). De piscibus et aquatilibus libelli III novi (Zürich 1556) Ein bisher unbeachtetes zoologisches Werk von Conrad Gesner

1990

Conrad Gesner was one of the main representatives of Renaissance-Humanism. Although having great respect for the knowledge handed down by classical antiquity, he combined his studies of the ancient authors with empirical knowledge obtained by immediate observation of nature. His most famous work was the great „Historia animalium”, a comprehense encyclopedia of zoology. Preparing this main zoological work Gesner wrote a small book about fishes „De piscibus et aquatilibus libri III novi” (1556), through which it is possible to gain a deep insight into Gesner's preparatory work and method.

A Variational Formulation of the BEM for Elastic-Plastic Analysis

1990

The quasi-static elastic perfectly plastic analysis problem is approached by the boundary element method (BEM). To this purpose, a time semidiscretization is first achieved by finite intervals (Fl) in order to transform, through a variationally consistent procedure, the evolutive problem into a discrete sequence of inelastic holonomic-type “weighted” problems for each of which a mixed boundary/domain min-max principle is established. This principle is then discretized by means of boundary elements (BE) and cell elements (CE), the latter having the only purpose of suitably interpolating the FI weighted yielding laws within the domain. The algebraic governing equations obtained show symmetry …

The Interaction of State Transitions and Chlororespiration in the Xanthophycean Alga Pleurochloris Meiringensis

1990

Wavelength dependent State I-State II-transitions have been shown to exist in chlorophytes and red algae. Little is known about the regulation of energy distribution between the photosystems of chlorophyll c-containing plants. Previously it was shown that in the xanthophycean alga Pleurochloris meiringensis two states of energy distribution could be established [l]: In state “D” light is preferentially transferred to PS II, whereas in state “L” PS I is favoured. These state regulations strictly depend on the intensity and not on the wavelength of prei1lumination. In this paper we give new evidence that chlororespiration is involved in the mechanism of state “L”-state “D”-transitions.

Search For Light Neutral Higgs Particles Produced In Z0-decays

1990

A search for the neutral Higgs boson in Z0-decays has been performed using the DELPHI detector at the Large Electron Positron collider (LEP) at CERN. We looked for the decay of Z0 into a neutral Higgs particle and a pair of fermions. No events fulfilled the criteria for H0-production. Our results, which are based on an integrated luminosity of 530 nb-1, exclude a minimal Standard Model Higgs boson with a mass in the range 210 MeV/c2 to 14 GeV/c2 at 95% confidence level.

Capillary experiments of flow induced crystallization of HDPE

1990

Flow-induced crystallization experiments are made in a capillary apparatus modified with a downstream reservoir under pressure. Capillary length, diameter, and entrance angle are changed, as well as flow rate. The results show that the crystallization temperature is influenced both by the elongational flow at the capillary entrance and by the shear flow along the capillary. The independent effect of the pressure equals that obtained under static conditions. The effect of shear is correlated in terms of shearing work.

Energy reserves of the capercaillie Tetrao urogallus in finlan

1990

Abstract 1. 1. The size of energy reserves, distribution of fat stores and the fatty acid composition of subcutaneous and pericardial adipose tissue of capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus) were studied in 12 adult birds shot in Sept.–Oct. and in 8 birds shot in March. Furthermore 4 captive birds were killed in Sept. 2. 2. A capercaillie male can maintain or even increase its body weight during winter, but as shown in the present work it is not a result of increased fat content. 3. 3. In general, capercaillie seems to contain more stored energy in the form of fat than other tetraonids so far studied, except Svalbard ptarmigan. 4. 4. In males total fat content in percentage of body weight varied o…
