Kinetic uptake data for xenon adsorbed onto large and uniform silicalite-I crystals are presented over a temperature range of 121 K to 296 K. — Adsorption isotherms and corrected diffusion coefficients derived from the uptake curves are given. The heat of adsorption and activation energy of diffusion were estimated from the plots of reciprocal temperature against the logarithm of equilibrium pressure and corrected diffusion coefficients, respectively. — While the corrected diffusion coefficient is independent of coverage for the higher temperatures, it decreases significantly at the lower temperatures investigated (<170 K) when the limiting adsorption capacity has been reached. — Comparing …

Crystals of 57Fe enriched reaction centers have been investigated by Mossbauer spectroscopy. The cytochrome irons are in the low spin ferric state. The non-heme iron of the electron accepting side is partly ferrous high spin and partly ferrous low spin (or ferric high spin). Under the conditions of the experiment sodium ascorbate reduces only one cytochrome iron into the ferrous low spin state. Membrane bound proteins become flexible at higher temperatures than proteins with a hydrophilic surface. They are also less flexible, at least up to temperatures of about 250 K.

Study of the leptonic decays of the Z0 boson

Measurements are presented of the cross section ratios Rℓ = σℓ(e+e-→ℓ+ℓ -)/σhh(e+e-→hadrons) for ℓ = e, μ and τ using data taken from a scan around the Z0. The results are Re = (5.09±0.32±0.18)%, Rμ = (4.96±0.35±0.17)% and Rτ,=(4.72±0.38± 0.29)% where, for the ratio Re, the t-channel contribution has been subtracted. These results are consistent with the hypothesis of lepton universality and test this hypothesis at the energy scale s ∼ 8300 GeV2. The absolute cross sections σℓ(e+e-→ℓ +ℓ-) have also been measured. From the cross sections the leptonic partial widths Γe = (83.2±3.0±2.4) MeV, (ΓeΓμ) 1/2=(84.6±3.0±2.4) MeV and (ΓeΓτ) 1/2=(82.6±3.3±3.2) MeV have been extracted. Assuming lepton un…

1. The effects of isoprenaline, noradrenaline and fenoterol on the electrically evoked release of [3H]-acetylcholine from the rat phrenic nerve were investigated. 2. Isoprenaline (0.1 mumol/L) and noradrenaline (1 mumol/L) enhanced evoked [3H]-acetylcholine release by about 90%, an effect which was abolished by CGP 20712A (0.1 mumol/L), a specific antagonist at beta 1-adrenoceptors. Noradrenaline still enhanced [3H]-acetylcholine release in the presence of phentolamine (1 mumol/L). 3. In February 1987 the paleontologists working on European mammalian faunas of the Paleogene convened in Mainz to establish a mammal chronology for this time period. The results were edited by the author of this report at the end of the same year (Schmidt-Kittler, 1987). The biochronological subdivision agreed upon in this symposium corresponds to the general conditions met in the European continental Tertiary. Therefore, it is consistent with the concept of subdivision used for the Neogene mammal chronology of Europe elaborated in an earlier meeting in Munich (Fahlbusch, 1976).

FIA-fluorimetric determination of thiamine.

A flow injection-fluorimetric determination of thiamine is reported. The procedure is based on the oxidation of the analyte with potassium hexacyanoferrate(III) immobilized on an anionic exchange resin; the fluorescence is monitored in aqueous basic solution. Concentrations of the vitamin of 0.1-4 ppm have been determined; the relative standard deviation was 1.8%. The injection rate was 28 samples/h. The influence of other substances and the determination of the drug in a pharmaceutical formulation are also reported.

Evaluation of the proteolysis degree with the o-phthalaldehyde/N-acetyl-L-cysteine reagent

The o-phthalaldehyde/N-acetyl-L-cysteine (OPA-NAC) reagent is applied to the spectrophotometric evaluation of the proteolytic activity of enzymes. The high stability of the OPA-NAC isoindoles makes a strict control of the time of reaction unnecessary. A mathematical expression is proposed to calculate proteolysis degrees, where the absorbance decrease of the OPA-NAC derivative of the protein itself during the hydrolysis process is taken into account. The method is applied to bovine serum albumine, caseine, lysozyme, lactoglobuline and protamine sulphate as substrates, and pronase, papaine, trypsin and chymotrypsin as enzymes.

Abstract Fertilized eggs, yolk sac larvae, and juveniles of zebrafish were exposed to 14C-lindane and 14C-atrazine under static conditions and the uptake was studied for a period of 48 hours. After 24 hours, a number of animals were transferred into pesticide-free running water and the elimination was examined for another 24 hours. The bioconcentration factors (BCFs) as well as the rate constants for uptake and elimination were calculated. Except for the lindane uptake by eggs and the atrazine uptake by juveniles, the steady state was reached within five hours.
