The International Congress of Immunobiology of Normal and Diabetic Pregnancy brought together a heterogeneous group of workers to consider one of the most fascinating areas of immunology. The meeting, which proved to be a thinkshop as much as a workshop, developed along two major lines: (1) an examination of new data in normal pregnancy immunology, from both the research and clinical points of view and (2) analysis of the suspected problems of diabetic pregnancy. 'Suspected' because pregnancy-related problems in diabetic women are not due solely to metabolic disturbances, but also involve immunological aspects of diabetes, particularly where type I diabetes is concerned.

Abstract A first measurement of quasi-free Compton scattering by the neutron bound in the deuteron has yielded a value for the polarizability of the neutron of αn=(11.7 −11.7+4.3)×10 −4fm 3. This means that a finite value for the polarizability has been obtained, though the result is still consistent with zero. The π0 decay constant Fπ 0γγ and the pion nucleon coupling constant gNNπ have opposite signs.

Abstract Single-γ, γγ-coincidence, and γ-ray angular distribution spectra of the 106Cd(p, nγ)106In reaction were measured with Ge(HP), Ge(Li), and Ge(LEPS) detectors at various bombarding proton energies between 8 and 11 MeV. Altogether 141 (among them 117 new) transitions have been assigned to 106In. The conversion electrons were studied with an intermediate-image magnetic spectrometer plus Si(Li) detector, as well as with a superconducting magnetic lens combined with a Si(Li) detector. Abstract The paper presents a new point of view on oblique cutting mechanics when cutting with a single-edged tool. This is based on the main assumption that plastic flow of material during chip forming occurs in the set of planes normal to the cutting edge. As a consequence of the transformation of various orthocartesian systems some new generalized relationships for kinematics of oblique cutting operation and plastic deformation in the shear zone are derived.

Abstract A flow-injection spectrofluorimetric determination of paracetamol is reported, based on the oxidation of the analyte with potassium hexacyanoferrate(III) immobilized on an anion-exchange resin, the fluorescence being enhanced with N,N′-dimethylformamide. Concentrations of paracetamol in the range 0.04–17.60 mg l−1 are determined with a relative standard deviation of 1.5%. The injection rate is 25 samples h−1. The influence of foreign species and the determination of paracetamol in several pharamaceutical formulations are also reported.

Mediastinal lymph node staging with transesophageal echography in cancer of the lung.

Transesophageal echography (TEE) was used prospectively to study mediastinal lymph node enlargement in 23 patients with cancer of the lung. The findings were validated blindly by comparison with computed tomography (CT, n = 23) and pathological N classification after curative surgery (n = 9). Lymph nodes larger than 1 cm were defined as pathologically enlarged. In the upper mediastinum, 22% (8 vs 36), in the lower mediastinum including the subaortic region 112% (37 vs 33) and in the hilar region 67% (6 vs 9) of enlarged lymph nodes diagnosed by CT were detected by TEE. Abstract In this paper a very simple model for predicting the daily global solar radiation at any Italian location using as input of a few extensively measured meterological parameters is proposed. In fact the daily radiation G (MJ m−2) is here correlated only with the sunshine duration s (h) and the noon altitude of the sun on the 15th of the month h n (degrees) by the following equation: G= Ks 0.5 (sin h n ) 1.15 where only one value of the factor K is used. Se han revisado 70 artroplastias totales de cadera no cementada tipo LORD implantadas en el Hospital Clínico de San Carlos de Madrid, en pacientes afectos de coxartrosis. El seguimiento mínimo ha sido de 20 meses y máximo de 90. La valoración clínica se ha realizado según el sistema de Merle D 'AUBIGNE con un 82.2% de buenos resultados, destacando entre los malos resultados: cuatro aflojamientos del componente acetabular, un aflojamiento del componente femoral y una infección. Detrital zircon ages and paleontology limit the age of the oldest known metasedimentary rocks in the Menderes-Taurus block of southwestern Turkey to between 657 {plus minus}5 Ma and Middle Cambrian (ca. 533 Ma). A mylonitic granite, also part of the basement, yielded a date of intrusion of 543 {plus minus}7 Ma. The scatter of both detrital and xenocryst zircon ages between 612 {plus minus}6 and 3,140 {plus minus}2 Ma virtually precludes northeastern Africa and Arabia as their provenance, but is compatible with a source in the Angara craton of Siberia. The objective of the paper is to measure the intensity of the relation between expectations and realizations for strategic variables of firms, such as production, demand or prices. An anticipation error reveals a disagreement which can be associated with the rational expectations hypothesis. The agreement coefficient between classifications, given by COHEN (1968) and LIGHT (1971) and calculated from a probability matrix, is used to define a direct measure of the disagreement between classifications. Comparison of the coefficients is used to test the rational expectations hypothesis.The coefficients are applied to business survey data of INSEE for France between 1974 and 1986.

Abstract An analytical procedure is presented which can drastically reduce computational effort in the evaluation of the spectral moments of an elastic linear multi-degree-of-freedom system subjected to a stationary multicorrelated input process. The reduction in computer time is possible since the cross-spectral moments of two oscillators can be obtained in recursive manner as a linear combination of the spectral moment of each oscillator taken separately, which is evaluated by means of a very fast numerical technique.

The effects of dexamethasone on human synovial fibroblast-like cells, from ostheoarthritic joints, in culture

The effect of Dexamethasone (DEX) on cell division and macromolecular synthesis was investigated in a line (Mc Coy cells, A 9) of synovial fibroblast-like cells derived from human osteoarthritic joints. DEX markedly reduced the proliferation of Mc Coy cells in a time and dose-dependent manner. The maxiamal inhibition (45 %) was found at 500 nM DEX 24 h after incubation and was accompanied by the appearance of giant macrophage-like cells. After DEX treatment cells showed increased content of DNA, proteins and RNA together with the reduction of [3H]-thymidine incorporation into the TCA-precipitable fraction.

Se realiza una comparación de las estaciones meteorológicas ubicadas en la Devesa de l'Albufera y Valencia-Viveros para el período comprendido entre agosto (1986), mes y año de inicio de los registros de la primera estación, y diciembre (1990). A partir de un ejemplo concreto, establece lazos entre las formas publicitarias y el imaginario postmoderno que aflora en nuestro mundo respecto a la escala planetaria.
