Search for heavy charged scalars in Z$^0$ Decays

Using a sample of Z0's corresponding to about 12 000 events, we have searched for the production of charged scalars, primarily charged Higgs particles, decaying into c̄scs̄, τν+jets, and τντν. The average detection efficiency is 20%. No candidate was found in the leptonic modes. Masses in the range up to 30-36 GeV/c2 are excluded, extending the mass domain covered by previous e+e- machines.

The paper describes the main ideas and principles of HAP (Hybrid representation of Actions and Plans), a system for hybrid representation and reasoning in advanced robotics. In this context, hybrid representation refers to the integration of both symbolic and analogic knowledge representation paradigms. In particular, the logic/symbolic component is based on a KL-ONE-like representation language. The system embeds "analogic experts", that are concurrent procedures operating in a direct and fast way on the world representation. Production mechanisms and signatures of isosinglet neutral heavy leptons in Z0 decays

Abstract Neutral Heavy Leptons (NHLs) arise in many extensions of the standard electroweak theory such as superstring inspired models. The possibility of gauge singlets NHLs is especially attractive because it gives an explanation for the observed smallness of the neutrino mass. Existing limits on the possible existence of such particles are still fairly poor. We have investigated isosinglet NHL production and decays within different models. The dominant production cross section is single production (i.e. Z 0 → N + ν or Z 0 → N + ν ) as a result of mixing with the standard doublet neutrinos. Measurement of electroweak parameters from Z decays into fermion pairs

We report on the properties of theZ resonance from 62 500Z decays into fermion pairs collected with the ALEPH detector at LEP, the Large Electron-Positron storage ring at CERN. We findMZ=(91.193±0.016exp±0.030LEP) GeV, ΓZ=(2497±31) MeV, σhad0=(41.86±0.66)nb, and for the partial widths Γinv=(489±24) MeV, Γhad(1754±27) MeV, Γee=(85.0±1.6)MeV, Γμμ=(80.0±2.5) MeV, and Γττ=(81.3±2.5) MeV, all in good agreement with the Standard Model. Assuming lepton universality and using a lepton sample without distinction of the final state we measure Γu=(84.3±1.3) MeV. Low-Dose Aclacinomycin and Intermediate-Dose Cytosine Arabinoside in Relapsed and Refractory Acute Myelogenous Leukemia

Nineteen patients with relapsed or refractory acute myelogenous leukemia were treated with escalating doses of aclacinomycin (ACLA 20–30 mg/m2 daily for 5 days) and intermediate-dose cytosine arabinoside (Ara-C 1 g/m2 twice daily for 4 days). Most patients had received previous therapy with high- or intermediate-dose Ara-C plus mitoxantrone (HAM, IAM) and TAD (6-thioguanine, standard-dose cytosine arabinoside, and daunorubicin). Four patients had had repeated relapses and another three were treated for primary treatment failure following induction with HAM or I AM.

Comparison of creatinine and inulin clearances in multiple trauma

Creatinine clearance (Ccr) is a good predictor of renal dysfunction. However, numerous analytical interferences have been observed with the classical measurement of creatinine by Jaffé's procedure. This prospective study was conducted to compare 4 methods for determining creatinine; and also endogenous creatinine clearance with inulin clearance (Cin) to estimate the glomerular filtration rate. Recent Measures of CaII H and K Chromospheric Fluxes in a Sample of RS CVn Systems

In this contribution we present the current status of a high resolution H and K spectroscopic survey of RS CVn and BY Dra systems which is being performed at our Department. The reduction and calibration procedures used in the extraction of emission fluxes are analyzed. We discuss the preliminary results for three of the RS CVn systems: HR 5110, Z Her and RT Lac.

Due to the severity of system-wide power outages, though their probability of occurrence is slight, regulatory authorities require that a system restoration plan be drawn up and kept up to date at all times. The power outage that affected northeastern North America in 2003 proved the need for such a requirement. The particular structure of Hydro-Quebec's power system requires the use of a highly specific system restoration procedure. Abstract Salvilymitone and salvilymitol, two new triterpenoids isolated from Salvia hierosolymitana , have been shown to be 7β,25-dihydroxy-(20 S ,24 R )-epoxydammaran-3-one and (20 S ,24 R )-epoxydammaran-3β,7α,25-triol, respectively. The absolute stereochemistry of these triterpenoids has been established by an X-ray diffraction analysis of a 25,26,27-trinor derivative obtained by degradation of both compounds. In addition, four previously known triterpenoids were isolated from the same source.

My first lecture at this Summer School on Applied Laser Spectroscopy dealt with the determination of nuclear ground-state properties, i.e. atomic mass M, the nuclear spin I, the magnetic dipole moment μ I, the spectroscopic quadrupole moment Q, and the changes in the mean-square charge radius δ(r2) A,A´ between isotopes with mass number A and A´. These quantities can be determined for stable, long-, or short-lived isotopes by mass spectrometry and optical spectroscopy. Differential blockade by nifedipine and ω-conotoxin GVIA of α1- and β1-adrenoceptor-controlled calcium channels on motor nerve terminals of the rat

Electrically evoked release of [3H]acetylcholine ([3H]ACh) from the rat phrenic nerve and its facilitation by stimulation of presynaptic alpha 1- and beta 1-adrenoceptors were investigated in the absence and presence of nifedipine and omega-conotoxin GVIA. Both calcium channel antagonists did not modify electrically evoked [3H]ACh release, but selectively blocked the effect triggered by both facilitatory adrenergic receptors. The increase in [3H]ACh release mediated via beta 1-adrenoceptor activation was abolished by low concentrations (1 nM) of omega-conotoxin GVIA, whereas nifedipine (100 nM) abolished the facilitatory effect mediated via alpha 1-adrenoceptor stimulation. A zoological survey of all macrofauna of benthic Invertebrates has been made along the slopes. New taxa of all taxonomic ranks are abundant. High faunal specific diversity and originality is obvious to all taxonomists. It is worth to mention that since the "Challenger" expedition over a century ago, the whole south-western Pacific region has been kept away from the great deep-sea research vessels routes. The study of both the BIOCAL collections and all the others from further cruises around New Caledonia is insured to provide new data to understanding the biogeography and evolution of the deep sea fauna.

Efecto de la contaminación ambiental sobre las superficies foliares de Pinus nigra de Els Ports (Castellón)

Possible alterations caused by air pollution in the wax structures of Pinus nigra needles, growing in 'els Ports' location (Castellón), have been examined by scanning electron microscopy. Our results show that the percentage of structurally functional epistomatic chambers decrease with needle age, being the adaxial surfaces preferently eroded. Structural alterations of epistomatic waxes in needles from trees growing in this area are greatly enhanced in comparison to controls.
