On the packing–holding flow in the injection molding of thermoplastic polymers

Injection molding tests were performed on a Ny66 resin. Data of mass entering the mold during the packing–holding stage as a function of filling flow rate and holding time are presented. The experimental results are discussed on the basis of a simple model of the packing–holding stage. Only a small part of density increase due to crystallization seams to be compensated by the packing–holding extra flow.

Gene activity of polytene chromosomes in Drosophila species of the obscura group.

The polytene chromosome puffing patterns of Drosophila guanche were established and compared with those of Drosophila subobscura. A total of 150 loci, active in some of the 17 developmental stages studied, were described and 23 of them were found to form the characteristic puffing pattern of D. guanche. Taking into account the number of puffs as well as the gene activity of each chromosome and the total gene activity, D. guanche seems to be less active than D. subobscura. Determination of mercury by cold‐vapour technique in several tissues of treated American red crayfish (Procambarus clarkii)

Abstract Adult intermolt specimens of American red crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) collected from Lake Albufera (Valencia, Spain), were exposed to mercury during 96 h. The Hg‐concentrations used were 50, 100, and 250 μg Hg/1 as Cl2Hg. The content of mercury in muscle, midgut gland, antennal glands and gills was investigated. Determinations of mercury were made by cold‐vapour technique and AAS. The mercury levels in all examinated tissues increased significantly (ANOVA test, p < 0.01) with increasing Hg‐concentration in the water.

Isolated neurointermediate lobes (NILs) or isolated neural lobes (NLs) of the rat pituitary gland were incubated in Krebs-HEPES solution which contained pargyline and the dopamine uptake inhibitor GBR 12921. The release of endogenous dopamine was determined by HPLC with electrochemical detection. Electrical stimulation of the pituitary stalk induced a frequency-dependent release of dopamine. The release of dopamine from the combined NIL evoked by stimulation at 15 Hz was increased by 130% in the presence of the dopamine D2 receptor antagonist, (-)-sulpiride; the (+)-enantiomer of sulpiride had virtually no effect. Endogenous adenosine inhibits hippocampal CA1 neurones: further evidence from extra- and intracellular recording.

Extracellular and intracellular recordings from CA1 pyramidal neurones of rats in vitro were used to study the effects of endogenous and exogenously applied adenosine. The adenosine receptor antagonist, caffeine, enhanced the intracellular recorded e.p.s.p.-i.p.s.p. sequence evoked by stimulation of the stratum radiatum which is antagonized by exogenous adenosine. Flow field, swimming velocity and boundary layer: parameters which affect the stimulus for the lateral line organ in blind fish

The data presented support the hypothesis that the flow field supplies the stimulus to the lateral line organ (LLO) in blind cave fish (Anoptichthys jordani). Two basic predictions from the theoretical analysis of the flow field were confirmed: (i) individual blind cave fish prefer particular swimming velocities, (ii) the velocity preferred depends on the cross-sectional area (CSA) of the fish, i.e. the smaller the CSA the higher the swimming velocity. Emergence of peatland insects was studied in Central Finland by sampling insects on a raised bog with tent traps from five different surfaces: muddy hollow without vegetation; hollow covered with Sphagnum; deep (0.7-0.9 m) open-water pool; shallow (about 0.3 m) pool with bottom covered by Carex vegetation; shallow (about 0.3 m) pool with bare muddy bottom. The roles of macrophages and the complement system as potential host defence mechanisms in mice against campylobacter infection were studied in vivo, by depleting the murine serum-complement or the phagocytic cells. Macrophage-depletion was performed by intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of silica dust, Liquoid or dextran sulphate. During 5 days after infection, such mice showed a significant increase in mortality, compared with controls. Needles of four spruce trees showing different degrees of novel kinds of forest decline were investigated by electron microscopy. Green needles appearing at least superficially still intact were selected for the present investigation. Most of the mesophyll appeared to be undamaged. However, groups of atypical mesophyll cells were found close to the endodermis or the hypodermis. The chloroplasts of the apparently damaged cells were particularly affected. How hexoses and inhibitors influence the malate transport system in Zygosaccharomyces bailii

When grown in fructose or glucose the cells of Zygosaccharomyces bailii were physiologically different. Only the glucose grown cells (glucose cells) possessed an additional transport system for glucose and malate. Experiments with transport mutants had lead to the assumption that malate and glucose were transported by one carrier, but further experiments proved the existence of two separate carrier systems. Glucose was taken up by carriers with high and low affinity. Laser Doppler flowmetry has been applied to normal skin and to subepidermal tumours during localized ultrasound hyperthermia in the rat. In normal skin, 40 degrees C hyperthermia only induced a marginal increase in the red blood cell flux. Significant increases occurred after 20 min at 42 degrees C and after 4 min at 44 degrees C. During 44 degrees C hyperthermia maximum fluxes were reached after 24 min. Thereafter, the flow declined and finally approached preheating values. Abstract Culture medium that was recovered from tumor cell or fibroblast cultures during the plateau phase, and that was replenished by addition of glucose, glutamine, and serum and readjustment of pH had a distinct growth-inhibiting effect on monolayer cell cultures. The effect, which was not specific for a given cell strain, may be partially responsible for the "density inhibition" commonly observed in malignant cells grown in monolayer cultures. Abstract Electrodisintegration of vector polarized deuterium by longitudinally polarized electrons offers a possibility for measuring the neutron electric form factor G En . In principle, the electron asymmetry is essentially proportional to G En when quasi-free kinematics are employed. We investigate the model dependence of this result by employing several NN force models both with and without meson-exchange and isobar corrections. Our formulation is based on a set often real equations of the plane-wave, mean-field Maxwell–Bloch type. The instability domain in the main control parameters space is determined. Our numerical study of these equations for a parameter range of the type explored in the recent experiments by Weiss Brock [ Phys. Rev. Lett.57, 2804 ( 1986)] reveals some similarities, but striking differences between our theoretical predictions and their experimental observations are also noted.

Characterization of R-plasmids in environmental isolates ofsalmonella: Host range and stability

Four environmental isolates ofSalmonella, resistant to several drugs, were examined for plasmid carriage with four different plasmid DNA isolation procedures. The method of Birnboim and Doly gave the best results. Three of the strains possessed a single plasmid with molecular weights of 60 (kanamycin resistant), 44.5 (kanamcin resistant), and 23.4 Md (ampicillin and amoxicillin resistant); the other strain (resistant to tetracycline) harbored two plasmids of 69.8 and 2.2 Md. Solute-induced Water Structure: Computer Simulation on a Model System

Abstract Two series of Monte Carlo simulations have been carried out on a system consisting of 125 water molecules, one of which is kept fixed to simulate a water molecule whose mobility is restricted by a solute. The results are checked against similar simulations without restrictions, used as a control, and they show how the blocked molecule helps increase both the structural order and the connectivity of the hydrogen bond network. Hβ photometry for UVBY standard stars

From 1984 to 1986 the authors made several observational campaigns at Calar Alto and La Palma Observatories using the uvby and β photometric systems to monitor a selected sample of late-type variable stars. In this paper they present the β values for 38 uvby standard stars to contribute to the uvby-β calibration works on late-type stars. In the final discussion, the β computed values are plotted against the Stroemgren b-y, m_(1), and c_(1) indices.

The approximating and eliminating search algorithm (AESA) presented was recently introduced for finding nearest neighbors in metric spaces. Although the AESA was originally developed for reducing the time complexity of dynamic time-warping isolated word recognition (DTW-IWR), only rather limited experiments had been previously carried out to check its performance in this task. Fabrication and characterization of tuned Gaussian mirrors for the visible and the near infrared

A thin-film technique has been developed for vacuum fabrication of mirrors with Gaussian reflectivity profiles. Samples with diameters from 2 to 8 mm and assigned maximum reflectivities for visible or near-IR wavelengths have been made and their optical properties evaluated. By properly choosing both the geometry of the evaporation source and the masking system, one can obtain quasi-Gaussian or super-Gaussian reflectivity profiles.
