Magnetic resonance imaging of dysraphic myelodysplasia

1988

The spinal cord in 56 children and adolescents was examined by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) many years after neonatal surgery on a meningomyelocele (average age 12 years). In a high percentage of cases, the diagnosis "tethered cord" was made. Associated anomalies were found with a frequency of 21%. Typical findings are presented and the impact of these results on therapy planning is discussed.

Radiative surface temperature and convective flux calculation over crop canopies

1988

The analysis presented in this paper aims at a better understanding of the potential role of radiative temperature, as measured by a radiometer over crops, in sensible heat flux calculation. Defining radiative temperature as the mean temperature of the surfaces viewed by the radiometer (leaves and soil surface) and assuming that an Ohm's law type formula can be used to express sensible heat flux as a function of the difference between air temperature and radiative temperature, the aerodynamic resistance which divides this temperature difference has been analytically defined. The parameters which appear in the resistance expression depend essentially on wind velocity and canopy structure but…

Replacement therapy for alpha-1-protease inhibitor deficiency in PiZ subjects with chronic obstructive lung disease

1988

In a six-month multicenter feasibility and safety study, 20 patients, who all had a congenital deficiency of alpha-1-protease inhibitor (A1PI) of the PiZ phenotype accompanied by a chronic obstructive lung disease, were treated with human-plasma-derived A1PI. A weekly dose of 60 mg/kg, administered intravenously, was shown to be sufficient to maintain patient serum levels above the threshold limit of 35 percent, the serum level of healthy persons of the MZ phenotype. This is supposed to be the minimal effective level for protection against the elastolytic attack of the lung and, therefore, satisfies one of the most important criteria of feasibility of long-term replacement therapy. The glob…

Quadrupole moments of radium isotopes from the 7p 2 P 3/2 hyperfine structure in Ra II

1988

The hyperfine structure and isotope shift of221–226Ra and212,214Ra have been measured in the ionic (Ra II) transition 7s 2 S 1/2–7p 2 P 3/2 (λ=381.4 nm). The method of on-line collinear fast-beam laser spectroscopy has been applied using frequency-doubling of cw dye laser radiation in an external ring cavity. The magnetic hyperfine fields are compared with semi-empirical and ab initio calculations. The analysis of the quadrupole splitting by the same method yields the following, improved values of spectroscopic quadrupole moments:Q s (221Ra)=1.978(7)b,Q s (223Ra)=1.254(3)b and the reanalyzed valuesQ s (209Ra)=0.40(2)b,Q s (211Ra)=0.48(2)b,Q s (227Ra)=1.58(3)b,Q s (229Ra)=3.09(4)b with an ad…

U-Pb zircon and Sm-Nd model ages of high-grade Moldanubian metasediments, Bohemian Massif, Czechoslovakia

1988

We report single grain U-Pb ion-microprobe as well as conventional bulk size fraction ages for zircons from 3 metasediment samples of the Moldanubian Complex, Bohemian Massif, one of the largest crystalline complexes of the Hercynian foldbelt in Europe. These are complemented by whole-rock Sm-Nd model ages. The metasediments are of upper amphibolite to granulite grade and come from the Bory Massif in Moravia, NW of Brno (sample AA-1) and from the Varied Group (AA-2) and Monotonous Group (AA-3) in the Ceske Budejovice region of SW Bohemia.

Characterization of thin superconducting YBaCuO-films by Raman-spectroscopy

1988

We have investigated thin sputtered films of the high Tc material YBa2Cu3O7 by means of Raman spectroscopy at different stages of the preparation process. We find that the films are amorphous after sputtering. The Raman spectra indicate that random polycrystalline layers, as well as crystalline layers with preferred orientation, are obtained by an additional thermal treatment.

Comparative study of Zorbax Bio Series GF 250 and GF 450 and TSK-Gel 3000 SW and SWXL columns in size-exclusion chromatography of proteins.

1988

Abstract A reduction of the mean particle diameter of silica-based packings in the size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) of proteins to about 5 μm generates the expected increase in column plate number over the traditional 10 μm SEC columns, as demonstrated for the Zorbax Bio Series GF 250 and GF 450 and TSK-Gel 3000 SWXL columns. The slightly lower column efficiency of the TSK-Gel 3000 SWXL compared with the GF 250 column is compensated by the fact that the phase ratio of the 3000 SWXL column is higher by a factor of two. Hence both columns show nearly the same peak capacity of about 20–30. When the ionic strength of the eluent was changed by varying the salt concentration, the elution volum…

The veridical perception of object temperature with varying skin temperature.

1988

The effect of skin-adaptation temperature on object-temperature perception was investigated, using the method of dichiric matching, in an attempt to determine whether veridical perception of physical object temperature occurs in human subjects. Observers were presented with a test temperature on one hand and required to find a matching temperature, that is, one that produced the same sensation, on the other, differently adapted, hand. Using equality of test and matching temperatures as a criterion of veridical perception, it was found that the latter improves with ΔT, the difference between object temperature and skin-adaptation temperature. It is postulated that when ΔT is close to zero, v…

Light scattering, neutron scattering and viscosity measurements on a nematic and a smectic polymethacrylate demonstrate the presence of molecularly disperse coils in solution. For the nematic polymer, toluene is a theta solvent, the behaviour familiar from conventional polymers (unperturbed coil conformation) being exhibited at the theta point. The isotropic melts likewise contain unperturbed coils; in the case of the nematic polymers, however, the coils in the melt have a radius of gyration which is about 30% smaller than that in solution at the theta point. In the liquid-crystalline phase, the mean radii of gyration in both cases are identical to the corresponding parameters in the isotro…

Comparison of woods-saxon and double-folding potentials forα-particle scattering from54Fe at 24.5 MeV

1988

Inelastic-scattering data are presented forα-particles of 24.5 MeV from54Fe over the range 15° to 175° in the centre-of-mass system. The real part of the optical potential is calculated microscopically using the M3Y effective interaction of Bertschet al. and the DDM3Y density-dependent interaction. Elastic scattering has been analysed by using as real part of the optical potential M3Y, DDM3Y and Woods-Saxon forms (WS), taking in all three cases as imaginary part a WS potential. To fit the data the double-folding potential needs to be normalized by a factor of ⋍1.6 for the M3Y interaction and of ⋍1.13 for the DDM3Y interaction. By the study of the invariant-point ambiguity it has been observ…

Production and characterization of a monoclonal antibody to the trichothecene mycotoxin diacetoxyscirpenol.

1988

A monoclonal antibody was obtained by the fusion of mouse myeloma cells with splenocytes isolated from Balb/c mice, which had been immunized with diacetoxyscirpenol-hemiglutarate (DAS-hemiglutarate) and verrucarol-hemiglutarates covalently bound to ethylenediamine-modified bovine serum albumin. The anti-DAS-antibody that could be induced was of the IgM type with kappa-chains. The titer of the monoclonal anti-DAS-antibody in ascites fluid obtained from mice injected the selected cell line was much higher than those of conventional antisera. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay based on the competitive binding principle in which the antibody was applied had a sensitivity of 1 ng DAS per assay…

Proton-antiproton annihilation at rest into two mesons and the quark line rule

1988

Proton-antiproton annihilation at rest into two mesons is analysed in a model describing annihilation by quark lines. The model allows to fit existing data with two parameters. The parameters describe the amplitudes for diagrams with and without rearrangement of quark lines.

Strangeness production inpp annihilation at rest and the quark ? diquark structure of nucleons

1988

The importance of approximate isospin selection rules observed inN¯ N annihilation at rest into two strange mesons is emphasized. The selection rules are traced back to a symmetry between amplitudes describing annihilation by the flux of quarks. Presumably the symmetry reflects the symmetry of ¯qq annihilation vertices. The relation of the symmetry to a quark — diquark substructure of the nucleon is discussed.

Bioactive Glass-Ceramics in Middle Ear Surgery An 8-Year Review

1988

An 8-year follow-up of Ceravital middle ear prostheses showed there was extremely good tolerance in the middle ear space. Incompatibility phenomena were not observed, and inflammatory reactions were neither caused nor supported by the implants. The tympanoplasties were always performed without interposition of cartilage between the tympanic membrane or the tympanic membrane graft and the disk-shaped portion of the implant, and extrusions were never observed. Long-lasting inflammatory processes appeared to destroy implants the same way they destroy ossicles. Transient inflammatory periods (such as episodes of purulent otitis media, which occurred soon after the prostheses were implanted) did…

Studies on the gastric anti-ulcer activity of hypolaetin-8-glucoside

1988

The gastric anti-ulcer activity of hypolaetin-8-O-β-D-glucoside (H-8-G), a flavonoid isolated from Sideritis leucantha, has been studied in rats. This compound significantly reduced gastric lesions induced by ethanol or acetylsalicylic acid (ASA), with an increase in mucus production. In the pylorus-ligated rat, H-8-G did not affect the volume of gastric secretion but decreased its acidity and peptic activity. The anti-ulcer activity of this flavonoid does not depend on stimulation of cell proliferation in the rat gastric mucosa. Our results suggest that H-8-G activity is related to its cytoprotective effects [mediated by endogenous prostaglandins (PGs) and associated to an increase in gast…

Novel Alkylanthracenes Synthesis, Reductive Alkylation, and Reductive Polymerization

1988

A series of novel substituted anthracenes has been prepared which carry two or four n-alkyl groups at C-2 and C-3 (C-6 and C-7). The route taken includes the synthesis of novel 2,3-dialkylbutadienes, their Diels-Alder reaction with 1,4-benzo- or 1,4-naphthoquinone, the dehydrogenation of the adducts, and the reduction of the anthraquinones. The substituted anthracenes are submitted to reduction and reductive alkylation in ethereal solvents and in liquid ammonia to yield 9,10-dialkyl-substituted 9,10-dihydroanthracenes. A modification of the reductive alkylation, i.e. the introduction of 1,n-dihaloalkanes as electrophiles, provides polymeric chains, in which dihydroanthracene moieties are li…

Phosphomannosyl receptors of lysosomal enzymes of skeletal muscle in neuromuscular diseases.

1988

The phosphomannosyl receptor system is responsible for both the receptor-mediated endocytosis and the intracellular transport of lysosomal enzymes. In the present study this receptor system was examined in affected muscles of patients with various neuromuscular diseases. The total activity of beta-N-acetyl-glucosaminidase, a marker enzyme of lysosomal hydrolases, was significantly elevated in the patients with myopathies (polymyositis and muscular dystrophies) but only slightly increased in those with neurogenic muscle atrophies (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, polyneuropathy or other neurogenic muscle disease). The increase was most prominent in the group of polymyositis. The content of pho…

Effects of Ga3 and Ca2+ on barley aleurone protoplasts: a freeze-fracture study

1988

Freeze-fracture electron microscopy was used to study changes in the endomembrane system of barley (Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Himalaya) aleurone protoplasts. Protoplasts were used for this study because their response to calcium and the plant hormone gibberellic acid (Ga3) can be monitored prior to rapid freezing of cells for electron microscopy. Protoplasts incubated in Ga3 plus Ca2+ secrete elevated levels of a-amylase relative to cells incubated in Ga3 or Ca2+ alone. The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and Golgi apparatus of protoplasts incubated in Ga3 plus Ca2+ undergo changes that are well correlated with the synthesis and secretion of a-amylase. The ER, which appears as short, single sheets …

The structure of 1-azabicyclo[4.2.0]octane (1) was evaluated by NMR spectroscopy. It was found that the six-membered ring has a chair conformation with the four membered ring in the N-axial and C-6-equatorial position, and as a consequence, the monomer allows neither a ring inversion nor a nitrogen inversion. It possesses two centers of chirality, one at the nitrogen atom and one at C-6. Homopolymerization was carried out in methanol at 60°C with N-alkyl ammonium salts of 1 affording the polymer in high yield within a few hours. Its NMR spectra reveal that the polymer chain is preferably arranged in the biequatorial position of the six-membered ring. As a polybase the polymer can be titrate…

Cultural Background and Second Language Acquisition

1988

Abstract Knubb‐Manninen, G. 1988. Cultural Background and Second Language Acquisition. Scandinavian Journal of Educational Research 32, 93‐100. The article examines – on the basis of a research study carried out in Swedish‐speaking schools in Finland – the significance that cultural conditions, such as gender and social background, have for second language learning. A model with gender and social background serving as the exogenous factors, school learning capacity and language use as the intervening variables, and proficiency in Finnish (second language) as a dependent variable was tested by means of the Lisrel method. The findings indicate that social background influences the learning of…

INSTABILITIES IN DOPPLER BROADENED OPTICALLY PUMPED FAR-INFRARED LASERS

1988

Recently Weiss and Brock observed Lorenz-type chaos in the 81.5μm emission from an optically-pumped 14NH3 laser1. The theoretical interpretation of the experimental results is an open question, however. In fact, the Lorenz-Haken model refers to incoherently pumped lasers with homogeneously-broadened two-level active media2. Models based on (at least) a three-level system are needed to describe optically-pumped lasers, whose dynamics is known to reduce to that of the Lorez-Haken model under certain limiting conditions3. But these conditions are not met in the 14NH3 laser, and indeed theoretical predictions of a model for this laser, which considered a homogeneously-broadened three-level acti…

Requirements on resolution of digital imaging equipment in the cardiac catheterization laboratory.

1988

We evaluated the requirements on spatial resolution of digital imaging equipment in the cardiac catheterization laboratory. Fifty cinefilms of the heart as the biological object and one film of a lead-ladder-pattern as an objective test were used. The patient films were examined for the visibility of the left ventricular angiogram, coronary arterial tree, coronary artery lesions, branching of septal arteries and the number of septal arteries. All films were viewed three times: with a 625 line TV-system, with a 1249 line TV-system and with a cineprojector. It was found that two application areas with different demands on the spatial and temporal resolution can be distinguished: 1) low spatia…

Ultrastructure and freeze-fracture studies of the thylakoids ofMantoniella squamata (Prasinophyceae)

1988

The ultrastructure and the supramolecular organization of the thylakoids of the small green flagellate,Mantoniella squamata, were examined in thin sections and freeze-fracture preparations. The whole chloroplast is tightly packed with thylakoids, which show a pattern of meandering, branching and/or anastomosing membranes. In freeze-fracture preparations only two fracture-faces can be distinguished: the PF- and the EF-face. The PF-face has a much higher particle density than the EF-face (PF: 4086 particles/μm2; EF: 865 particles/μm2). The EF-face is not as uniform as the PF-face. The areas which are packed with particles probably correspond to closely appressed thylakoid regions or adhesive …

Amorphous Complexes MM (EDTA) (H2O)4 · 2H2O . LAXS and XPS Investigation of the Local Structure

1988

Abstract The amorphous MM (EDTA)(H2O)4·2 H2O (M = Ni,Co) substances are made up of infinite chains of alternating "hydrated" and "chelated" octahedra bridged by carboxylate groups: M(H2O)4 - M(EDTA)-M(H2O)4-... . XPS enables to ascertain that the coordination of the EDTA ligand in the amorphous phase is identical to that in the crystalline phase, i.e., hexacoordination toward the M atom and two bridging groups in the Ni -Ni, Co - Co compounds.

The role of the neutron electric form factor ind(e, e? N)N including polarization observables

1988

The influence of the neutron electric form factor on various observables in two-body break-up of deuterons by electrons such as differential cross section, beam, target and beam-target asymmetries and outgoing nucleon polarization as well is investigated for different kinematic regions. The electron-deuteron vector asymmetryAedV and the outgoing nucleon polarization component P′x(n) are the most promising observables in and off the quasi-free region for a determination ofGEn. Also the single polarization observablesAdT and Py0(p) and the double polarization observable P′z(n) show significant influences fromGEn.

ADDITIVITY FROM MULTIPLE PRIMES IN IDENTIFYING BACKWARD WRITTEN WORDS

1988

Activational theories of memory assume that activation from several sources adds up to an intersecting node. We tested this idea in one experiment where we kept constant the number of primes presented and we manipulated the number of different primes related to the target, the number of presentations of the same prime, or the same target, presented as a prime. We used a task in which the target was always a word, which appeared written backward and had to be identified. We found a strong effect of target repetition and diminished priming in the condition in which the target was repeated. We obtained additivity (greater activation) mainly in the condition in which we presented several diffe…

Immunochemical characterization of anti-acetylcholine receptor antibodies in primary biliary cirrhosis

1988

Although the presence of anti-mitochondrial antibodies is the main characteristic of primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC), other autoantibodies have been described in this disease. This study employs immunoblot methods to test whether the sera of PBC patients also contain antibodies directed against nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (AChR). We show that the majority of patients' sera indeed react with AChR just as sera of myasthenic patients do. In contrast, however, these anti-AChR antibodies do not lead to significant clinical symptoms of myasthenia. In all cases studied, PBC sera recognized a protein with the molecular weight of the alpha-chain of acetylcholine receptor (40 kDa). In addition,…

Somatosensory evoked potentials aiding the diagnosis of brain death.

1988

SEP were recorded in 14 patients, who fulfilled the clinical and electroencephalographic criteria of brain death. The results are compared with the respective ones in healthy subjects. Beside the absence of cortical N 20 in each brain dead patient, reduction of amplitude or absence of near field negativity (N 13b) from upper neck regardless of the position of the reference electrode represents the predominant result. The near field potential from the lower neck (N 13a) was unaffected. The counterpart in the far field potential recorded from F z was amplitude reduction of P 13. These results suggest that the dissociation of N 13a and N 13b can confirm the diagnosis of brain death. Moreover t…

Time-course changes of plasma lipid levels and lipoprotein pattern after feeding in cultured sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax L.

1988

Results of a study of plasma lipids levels and lipoprotein pattern modification during digestion in sea bass indicate that, after feeding, non-esterified fatty acids are rapidly delivered in plasma, while triglycerides reach a maximum concentration only 24 h later. The time-course change of the lipoprotein pattern shows a relationship between their concentration and the lipid class carried.
