Chief Series and Right Regular Representations of Finite p-Groups
1988
AbstractWe study the embeddings of a finite p-group U into Sylow p-subgroups of Sym (U) induced by the right regular representation p: U→ Sym(U). It turns out that there is a one-to-one correspondence between the chief series in U and the Sylow p-subgroups of Sym (U) containing Up. Here, the Sylow p-subgroup Pσ of Sym (U) correspoding to the chief series σ in U is characterized by the property that the intersections of Up with the terms of any chief series in Pσ form σp. Moreover, we see that p: U→ Pσ are precisely the kinds of embeddings used in a previous paper to construct the non-trivial countable algebraically closed locally finite p-groups as direct limits of finite p-groups.
A speech-act-based office modeling approach
1988
In this paper methods and principles that help to analyze offices as systems of communicative action are explored. In communicative action, office agents create commitments through symbolic means. A SAMPO (Speech-Act-based office Modeling aPprOach), which studies office activities as a series of speech acts creating, maintaining, modifying, reporting, and terminating commitments, is presented. The main steps and methods in the office system specification are outlined and their application illustrated through a simple example. In the final section advantages and disadvantages in the SAMPO are noted and some research directions for the future are suggested.
The effects of muscular exercise on glucose, free fatty acids, alanine and lactate in type I diabetic subjects in relation to metabolic control.
1988
Metabolic effects of muscular exercise were studied in eleven subjects with type I diabetes mellitus during poor metabolic control, and again during good metabolic control, and in ten healthy control subjects. All the subjects were submitted to a submaximal gradual triangular test on an electrically braked bicycle ergometer; glucose, FFA, alanine and lactate were measured at rest, and after exercise. In poorly controlled patients, glucose and FFA were unchanged after exercise, whereas blood alanine and lactate increased by a percentage similar to that of the controls, and well-controlled diabetic patients. Baseline alanine concentrations were lower and lactate concentrations higher than in …
Effect of the stable prostacyclin analogue iloprost on water and electrolyte transfer of the rat ileum and colon in vivo.
1988
The effect of iloprost on water and ion transfer was measured simultaneously in tied-off loops of the rat ileum and colon in vivo. (1) In the ileal loops iloprost had no effect on water and ion transfer neither by intraluminal, nor intraaortal or intravenous application. (2) In the colonic loops only intraaortal bolus application of the high dose of 500 micrograms iloprost significantly decreased net water, sodium and chloride absorption, but did not induce net secretion. (3) Inhibition of endogenous prostaglandin synthesis by indomethacin did not change net water and electrolyte transfer in the ileum and colon. (4) Under this pretreatment i.v.-application of 100 micrograms iloprost, ineffe…

Protein synthesis and cyclic GMP content in rat cardiac muscle after swimming exercise
1988
Rats were exercised for 6 h by swimming. Phenylalanine incorporation into myocardial proteins was increased when 2 h had elapsed after the termination of exercise. Cyclic GMP concentration did not change during the experiment, which indicates that cyclic GMP does not act directly as a trigger of myocardial protein synthesis in volume overload.
Analysis of the hyperpolarizing effects of forskolin in guinea-pig atrial heart muscle.
1988
The effects of forskolin on action potential configuration and on both uptake and efflux of 86Rb+ were studied in guinea-pig left atria. The action potential was prolonged by forskolin in the plateau range but shortened at the end of repolarization; maximal upstroke velocity and amplitude of slow response potentials were enhanced. In partially depolarized preparations, the resting potential was increased by forskolin; this effect was not prevented by atropine 1 μmol/1. Forskolin augmented the rate constant of 86Rb+ efflux in beating and in resting preparations. The uptake of 86Rbs+ was enhanced by forskolin in resting preparations. It is concluded that forskolin stimulates the Na+, K+ -pump…
Molecular Composition of Glutamine Synthetase of Sinapis alba L.
1988
Chloroplastic glutamine synthetase of Sinapis alba, purified to homogeneity by a simple three step procedure, revealed a molecular weight of about 395 kDa. The native enzyme is composed of eight subunits of identical molecular weight (about 50 kDa (each), although isoelectrofocusing yielded six distinct bands in the pH 5.6 region of the gel. Labelling of the enzyme with the glutamate analogue herbicide [14C]phosphinothricin and with [γ-32P]ATP indicated that glutamine synthetase has eight reactive centers per molecule. The native enzyme dissociated into two enzymatically active subaggregates of about 195 kDa after Mg2+ deprivation.
Investigation of Inspiratory Pressure-Volume Curves on Mechanically Ventilated Patients Using Least Square Polynomial Fit
1988
Abstract An on-line method for the registration of pressure volume 1 oops TrT mechanically ventilated patients was developed using a personal computer with analog/digital interface. A third order polynomial function was fitted to the measured inspiratory pressure volume pairs. The significance of the fitting procedure was calculated using regression ANOVA. The inflection point of the pressure-volume curve was determinated by calculating the root of the second derivative of the polynomial. The method was teseted on 20 patients without major pulmonary dysfunction and on 6 patients with severe ARDS.
Effect of Injectable or Inhalational Anesthetics and of Neuroleptic, Neuroleptanalgesic, and Sedative Agents on Tumor Blood Flow
1988
Among other parameters, varying blood flow values may be responsible for tumor-to-tumor variabilities in the radiobiologically hypoxic cell fraction of experimental rodent tumors. To test whether changes in tumor blood flow may be caused by anesthetic agents often used in radiobiology, the effect of injectable and inhalational anesthetics and of neuroleptic, neuroleptanalgesic, and sedative agents on blood flow in subcutaneous DS-carcinosarcomas implanted in Sprague-Dawley rats has been investigated using the 85Kr clearance technique. In conscious rats, 20-100 min after animal instrumentation mean blood flow is 0.62 +/- 0.17 ml/g/min (mean +/- SD) in 0.75 +/- 0.15 g tumors at a mean arteria…

The elastic interaction of high-spin and low-spin complex molecules in spin-crossover compounds
1988
Several transition metal compounds show a transition from the low-spin (LS) to the high-spin (HS) electronic state with increasing temperature. The cooperative nature of the transition is usually parametrised by an interaction constant Gamma , the origin of which is still under discussion. In the frame of the lattice expansion mode, the interaction Gamma is attributed to the elastic interaction between the spin-changing ions as a result of the deformation of the crystal accompanying the transition. The authors calculate the complete elastic energy originating from the so-called image pressure in closed form by considering the crystal as an isotropic homogeneous elastic medium with the spin-…

Conjugation reactions of polyaromatic quinones to mono- and bisglutathionyl adducts: Direct analysis by fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry
1988
The conjugation products of several reactive quinones with glutathione have been identified by fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry. Appropriate conditions have been developed which enabled the direct, dynamic mass spectral analysis of spontaneous, as well as glutathione transferase catalysed conjugation reactions. Applications to a series of quinones provided the direct detection and differentiation of the formation of mono- and bisglutathionyl adducts between regioisomeric quinone substrates in that only 1,4-quinones yielded bisglutathionyl adducts, which were not observed for the 1,2-isomers.
1-Cycloundecen-3-in
1988

Shear characterization of CaCO3-filled linear low density polyethylene
1988
Shear properties of CaCO3-filled linear low density polyethylene have been determined over a wide range of filler loading. The viscosity rises with the filler loading especially at low shear rates and a yield value appears for CaCO3-contents larger than 5%. The decrease of the die-swell ratios of the filled samples indicates a reduction of the melt elasticity.

Phase transformation in a glass-ceramic observed by laser spectroscopy
1988
The influence of thermal treatment on a (Li2O∶Al2O3∶ SiO2) glass ceramic is studied by laser spectroscopy. At temperatures above 800 °C a fluorescence of Cr3+ ions around 693 nm appears which indicates the growth of crystallites where the Cr3+ ions occupy sites similar to those in Al2O3.
Enhancement of guinea-pig intestinal peristalsis by blockade of muscarinic M1-receptors
1988
1. The effects of pirenzepine and hyoscine on the peristaltic reflex were investigated in the guinea-pig isolated small intestine. Peristalsis was induced by raising the intraluminal pressure and the volume of fluid propelled was taken as a measure of the efficiency of peristaltic activity. 2. Low concentrations of pirenzepine (0.1-1 nM) and of hyoscine (0.01 nM) significantly enhanced peristalsis, whereas larger concentrations of both drugs caused inhibition. Pirenzepine was about 6 times less potent than hyoscine in increasing peristalsis, but was about 100 times less potent in inhibiting it. 3. Neither tolazoline (1 microM) nor naloxone (0.3 microM) affected the stimulatory action of pir…

The second component of human complement: Use of glycosidases and glucosylation to distinguish the two forms
1988
Abstract The two forms of human plasma C2 that were described in the preceding report (1) were investigated for their functional and biochemical differences. Incubation with the neuraminidase (NAN'dase) of Clostridium perfringens at 37°C resulted in a four- to fivefold increase in the hemolytic activity of both forms. The increase in activity was different than the increase caused by treatment with iodine. The mechanism of increased activity of NAN'dase-treated C2 was the generation of increased molecules of activated C3 (C3b), resulting in more molecules of C5 binding to (C4b, 2a, 3b)n. Removal of N-acetyl-neuraminate from C2 did not alter its binding to a cationic exchanger. Nonenzymatic …
Evidence for three microscopically different kinds ofE1 transition in lead-region nuclei
1988
A survey of electric dipole transition rates, or B(E1) values, is done for lead-region nuclei with 82≦Z≦90 and 112≦N≦134. It is found that the major part of the E1 transitions are hindered by a factor of about 106–107 and these transitions are interpreted to proceed via admixtures of the collective 1− state. A second group, which is generally 10–100 times less hindered and is involving the πi13/2 orbital in the initial states, is suggested to proceed via the allowed πi11/2→πh9/2 admixtures in the wave functions. These two groups are compared to a third newly established category, the α-cluster or IBAp-boson mode, of the so-called vibron model.
Morphological and biochemical effects of glucocorticoids in chick embryo hepatocytes during development
1988
Abstract The administration in ovo of hydrocortisone-21-phosphate caused, in chick embryo liver, a reduction of the number of hepatocytes which can be isolated from 1 mg dry weight of liver and a marked increase of their size. Moreover, the treatment diminished the incorporation of thymidine into acid-insoluble fraction in these cells whilst it augmented the content of protein, RNA, DNA and the level of thymidine kinase/cell. These effects were highest at 8–10 days, then declined with the age, disappearing after 18th day of incubation. Similar effects were obtained by injecting other glucocorticoids or ACTH. Combined treatment with metopirone abolished the effects found with ACTH, but did n…
Wolfram's syndrome and HLA.
1988
A Sicilian family with three siblings affected by Wolfram's syndrome (Ws) is reported. HLA typing was performed in eight individuals from this family through three generations. Two of the three patients were HLA DR2 positive. The results suggest that the gene for Ws is not linked to the HLA region on chromosome 6, but located on some other chromosome, and that the allele HLA DR2 might predispose to the mutation responsible for Ws.
CNS depressant effects, anti-inflammatory activity and anti-cholinergic actions ofSantolina chamaecyparissus extracts
1988
The pharmacological activity of several extracts together with the lyophilized infusion of S. chamaecyparissus ssp. squarrosa were investigated. The lethal dose 50% (LD50), effect on animal metabolism, mechanical and thermic analgesia and spontaneous, anti-inflammatory, and anti-ulcer activity have been determined. Studies on isolated organs (rat duodenum and rat uterus) were also carried out. The hexanic and chloroformic extracts were potent antagonists of the thermic analgesia test; the former extract was also active in the mechanical analgesia test. The chloroformic extract and, to a lesser extent, the ethyl acetate extract and lyophilized infusion demonstrated noteworthy activity as ant…
A neutron scattering study of the magnetic properties of PrSn3
1988
The intermetallic compound PrSn3 has been studied by elastic and inelastic neutron scattering. The paramagnetic phase shows overdamped crystal field excitations and an anisotropic distribution of the diffuse magnetic intensity. The dispersion relation of the excitations of the antiferromagnetic phase has been determined. The results are analyzed in terms of an anisotropic exchange coupling.

X-Linked myopathy with excessive autophagy: A new hereditary muscle disease
1988
We report on 3 brothers with a myopathy that also affected their maternal grandfather and great-uncle. Characteristic features are onset in early childhood, very slow progression, normal life expectancy, weakness of proximal limb muscles, especially in the legs, elevation of serum creatine kinase, and no cardiac or intellectual involvement. In biopsy material muscle fibers are almost never necrotic but show excessive autophagic activity and exocytosis of the phagocytosed material. We suggest that this family has an undescribed type of congenital myopathy, for which we propose the name X-linked myopathy with excessive autophagy.
Serum-Vitamin-A-Bestimmungen und ihre Aussagekraft zum Vitamin-A-Status
1988
Beta-decay of148,150,152Pr into levels of148,150,152Nd
1988
Theβ−-decay of148,150,152Pr into levels of148,150,152Nd has been studied byγ-singles,γγ-coincidence and for148Pr also byγγ-angular correlation measurements. The praseodymium activities have been obtained by thermal neutron-induced fission of235U followed by on-line mass separation with the helium-jet coupled mass separator HELIOS. Decay schemes for these heaviest praseodymium nuclides are proposed. From the angular correlation measurements spin values for the seven lowest levels of148Nd are deduced. Spin and parity assignments for the lower levels in150,152Nd have been extrapolated from level systematics.
Rare sacral space-occupying lesions, their surgical management and reconstructive measures involved
1988
Nine cases of space-occupying lesions of the sacral bone are presented. The problems of the clinical diagnosis, which in many cases comes too late, are discussed together with the indications for surgical treatment in this special group of tumours. The main clues are provided by the changes in the X-rays as well as the more modern imaging techniques (CT and MRI). The surgical technique aims at a most radical tumour removal with preservation of the sacral nerve roots, after which stabilisation of the sometimes weakened pelvic girdle may be necessary. The good prospects of complete removal of these tumours of the sacrum with satisfactory results seem to be very little known and justifies furt…
Effects of tetraethylammonium ions on frequency-dependent vasopressin release from the rat neurohypophysis.
1988
1. Isolated rat neurohypophyses were fixed by their stalks to a platinum wire electrode and superfused with oxygenated Krebs-HEPES solution. Vasopressin release into the medium was determined by radioimmunoassay. Vasopressin secretion was increased by electrical stimulation at different frequencies (3-30 Hz) and different train lengths (75-900 pulses). The effects of tetraethylammonium (TEA) ions and of enhanced calcium were tested. 2. Electrical stimulation at 7.5 or 15 Hz evoked a markedly larger release of vasopressin than stimulation at 3 Hz. During continuous stimulation at 7.5 and 15 Hz the evoked vasopressin release per pulse declined rapidly, but with similar time constants for both…

Precise annual changes in the numbers of "synaptic" ribbons and spherules in the rat pineal gland.
1988
Although pineal "synaptic" ribbons (SR) are frequently examined by means of quantitative electron microscopy, their functional significance remains unclear. The same is true for related structures—"synaptic" spherules (SPH). In the course of such studies, it has been noted that SR counts may differ from laboratory to laboratory. Because seasonal changes may play a role, a 2-year study was performed on male rats kept under routine laboratory conditions and killed at monthly intervals during daytime or nighttime. Both structures examined showed distinct day-night differences throughout the year, with higher numbers at night than during the day. There were significant annual changes in both S…
