Metabolism of chlortoluron in tolerant species: possible role of cytochrome p-450 mono-oxygenases

1988

Summary Pathways of chlortoluron metabolism were compared in excised leaves of four tolerant species, namely wheat (Triticum aestivum var Clement), Bromus sterilis, Galium aparine and Veronica persica. The herbicide was principally detoxified by hydroxylation of the ring methyl in wheat and by N-dealkylation in Veronica persica. Both pathways were involved in Bromus sterilis and Galium aparine. Kinetic study of the degradation showed that capacity to form non-toxic conjugates could, at least partially, explain the tolerance of these species to chlortoluron. In plants treated with 1-aminobenzotriazole, a cytochrome P-450 enzyme inactivator, N-dealkylation of chlortoluron was little or not af…

Elevated Pressure in the Dorsal Part of Pancreas Divisum

1988

Summary In 6 patients with upper abdominal pain of unknown origin presenting with pancreas divisum, the pressure in the pancreatic duct was measured via the minor papilla into which in these patients the main part of the pancreatic duct system drains. For comparison intraductal manometry via the major papilla (papilla of Vater) was performed in 8 patients with normal pancreatic duct system. The pressure in the pancreatic duct of the control group was 10.5 ± 0.9 mm Hg. whereas in the patients with pancreas divisum it was 23.7 ± 1.3 mm Hg. The results demonstrate that in patients with pancreas divisum, intraductal pressure may be largely increased even in the fasting state.

“Masked” Philadelphia chromosome resulting from a t(X;22) in chronic myeloid leukemia

1988

Abstract A rare cytogenetic finding in chronic myeloid leukemia is reported. It consisted in a “masked” Philadelphia chromosome, resulting from an unusual translocation between chromosomes #22 and X. The t(X;22) was present in 100% of direct and cultured bone marrow cell preparations. Chromosome #9 did not seem to be involved in the formation of the Ph marker. Involvement of the X chromosome in karyotypic changes of hematologic diseases, with particular respect to chronic myeloid leukemia, is discussed.

Concomitant gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist and menotropin treatment for the synchronized induction of multiple follicles.

1988

In an effort to overcome possible interference by endogenous gonadotropin-ovarian hormone dynamics, desensitization of the pituitary gonadotropins by a gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist (GnRHa) was achieved in 12 women with repeatedly failed attempts at multiple follicular stimulation. Eight women were scheduled for in vitro fertilization (IVF) and embryo transfer (ET), and 4 for gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT). Stimulation failure was characterized by premature luteinization, poor estradiol (E2) response, or inadequate follicular growth. The agonist was administered by nasal spray 500 to 600 micrograms/day beginning on days 21 to 23 of the menstrual cycle. A rapid desensitizatio…

A procynosuchid cynodont from central Europe

1988

Diversified assemblages of non-mammalian synapsids (or mammal-like reptiles) have long been known from the Upper Permian of southern Africa1 and the Russian Platform2. In contrast, Upper Permian deposits in central and western Europe have rarely yielded remains of terrestrial vertebrates. The German Kupferschiefer (basal Zechstein 1) and its English equivalent, the Marl Slate, have yielded several reptiles: the gliding diapsid Coelurosauravus3 (also known from the Lower Sakamena Formation of Madagascar3−4), the archosauromorph Protorosaurus5, and the pareiasaur Parasaurus6. The Cuttie's Hillock Sandstone of northern Scotland has yielded the pareiasaur Elginia and two dicynodont synapsids an…

Macromonomers on the basis of 2-phenyl-2-oxazoline

1988

By initiation of the ring-opening polymerization of 2-phenyl-2-oxazoline (1) with p-iodomethylstyrene a macromonomer with a styrene end-group (2) is obtained. The degree of polymerization was varied between 10 and 16. The radical copolymerization of 2 with styrene is described. 1 forms with methyl triflate a very stable oxazolinium salt which is a good initiator for the bulk polymerization of 1 at temperatures of 50–70°C. It was conclusively proved that under these conditions the polymerization proceeds by a living mechanism. By termination with N, N-dimethylaminopropylmeth-acrylamide a macromonomer (5) was obtained. 5 can be radically homopolymerized. This comb-like polymer 6 has the typic…

Spin transition in iron complexes induced by heat, pressure, light and nuclear decay

1988

The phenomenon of temperature-dependent spin transition will be introduced and the numerous chemical and physical influences affecting the spin transition characteristics will be discussed. We shall mainly concentrate on the spin crossover system [Fe(2-pic)3]X2·Sol (2-pic=2-aminomethylpyridine; X=Cl, Br; Sol=C2H5OH, CH3OH) and demonstrate how the behaviour of the spin transition5T2g(Oh)⇌1A1g(Oh) is influenced by substituting the metalion, the non-coordinating anions X, the crystal solvent molecules Sol and by isotopic exchange with H/D and14N/15N. It will also be shown that the spin transition is very susceptible to pressure. A quantitative spin state conversion from low spin to high spin c…

Supersymmetric majoron signatures and solar neutrino oscillations

1988

Spontaneous R-parity breaking in supergravity solves the solar neutrino problem through matter-enhanced neutrino oscillations. The model may be tested in collider experiments and through ``dynamical'' effects associated with the existence of a weakly interacting majoron. Apart from astrophysical effects, majoron emission can produce observable changes in \ensuremath{\mu} and \ensuremath{\tau} decay spectra for parameter values that substantially reduce the solar neutrino flux. A signature of the model is the possible observation of the decay \ensuremath{\mu}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}e+majoron.

Absorption of protein in the early postoperative period in chronic conscious dogs.

1988

Postoperative alterations in amino acid exchange across the intestinal tract and in the capacity for protein absorption were investigated in a chronic canine model. Changes in postoperative splanchnic amino acid exchange consisted of a temporary decrease of total splanchnic amino acid release, including a significant reduction in alanine production, and an increase in glutamine consumption. Contrary to results under stable metabolic conditions, branched chain amino acids were also taken up by the intestine in the early postoperative period. The changes in postoperative amino acid exchange were not, however, reflected by a corresponding alteration in protein transport capacity. The absorptiv…

Negatively charged lipid molecules were converted into polymerizable lipids by introduction of polymerizable mono- or bifunctional counterions. As an attempt to mimic the cytoskeleton of biomembranes, unsymmetrical polymeric vesicles were prepared, where the polyelectrolyte is attached either only to the inner or to the outer bilayer surfaces. Polymerizable cations were introduced to the outer surface of preformed small unilamellar vesicles via ion-exchange. The outer counterions of vesicles bearing polymerizable counterions at both sides of the membrane were replaced by Na+. Polymerization of these systems leads to unsymmetrical vesicles. Structure and Dilution of Mesogenic Side Chains in Liquid Crystalline Polysiloxanes

1988

Abstract The structure of the smectic phases in four series of homo- and copolymers based on dimethylsiloxane chains with a definite variation of the concentration of the paired mesogenic side chains has been investigated by means of X-ray methods. The dilution of the mesogenic moiety was achieved by insertion of additional dimethylsiloxane segments. A nearly linear dependence of the layer spacings on the dilution has been found. A model of the structure is proposed which consists of two sublayers one of which contains the irregularly arranged main chain whereas the other one is formed by the side chains.

Wetting and layering in the nearest-neighbor simple-cubic Ising lattice: A Monte Carlo investigation.

1988

Critical, tricritical, and first-order wetting transitions are studied in a simple-cubic nearest-neighbor Ising model, with exchange J in the bulk and exchange ${J}_{s}$ in the surface planes, by applying suitable bulk and surface fields H and ${H}_{1}$. Monte Carlo calculations are presented for systems of size L\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}L\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}D, in a thin film geometry with D=40 layers and two free L\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}L surfaces, with L ranging from L=10 to L=50. In addition, evidence for prewetting transitions and for layering transitions (the latter occur for temperatures T less than the roughening temperature ${T}_{R}$) is presented. …

Laser Speckle Size And Temporal Transfer Function In Human Vision

1988

Using a blue laser stimulus we measured TMTF with speckle sizes of 19.1 µm, 3.3 µm and absence of speckle. Our results indicate, if we compare the TMTF curves obtained for different speckle sizes, a gain of modulation due fundamentally to the presence of the spec kle; in the low frequency region this gain of modulation can be explained in terms of inhibitory effects. On the other hand, we observe by using the diffusion-inhibition model, that the presence of speckle in the test-field produces a delay of 12 ms and a reduction of the height of the response, with respect to that obtained in the uniform test (with absence of speckle).

Dislocations in AIIIBVI single crystals

1988

High densities of planar defects are evidenced in various AIIIBVI layer compounds by systematic electron microscopy observations with the dark-field weak-beam image technique. Several samples are analyzed, as obtained from different crystal ingots of InSe grown by the Bridgman-Stockbarger method, and some GaS and GaSe single crystals grown both, from the melt and from the vapour. The observed defects are identified mainly as screw and edge dislocations, the orientation of which is obtained in some cases by the analysis of the Moire fringes. Dislocation densities ranging between 108 and 1010 cm−2 are measured, not uniformly distributed in the various regions of each sample. Finally, the obse…

Tetrodotoxin slightly shortens action potential duration in ventricular but not in atrial heart muscle.

1988

Tetrodotoxin (TTX), at concentrations significantly decreasing maximal upstroke velocity (dV/dtmax) of the action potential, exerted variable effects on action potential duration (APD) in different myocardial preparations. APD was virtually unchanged by tetrodotoxin in the guinea pig atrium, but slightly shortened in the guinea pig ventricle at maximally effective concentrations. In the human ventricle, both dV/dtmax and APD were reduced in the same concentration range of TTX. These results suggest that a TTX-sensitive sodium current significantly contributes to the repolarization phase of the action potential in ventricular but not in atrial heart muscle.

Analytical evaluation of integrals occurring in bound-free transitions.

1988

A class of three-dimensional integrals on spatial coordinates of the type occurring in treatments of multiphoton ionization of atoms and of other bound-free transitions is evaluated in closed form for both hydrogenic and Slater-type wave functions. The reported method of evaluation is illustrated with a number of examples, including the multiphoton ionization of hydrogen by a very intense laser field, when the ejected electrons have absorbed more photons than the minimum required to reach the continuum.

Intraoperative localization of malignant pheochromocytoma by 123-i-metaiodobenzylguanidine single probe measurement

1988

Metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) imaging is a well-established method for locating intra- and extraadrenal pheochromocytomas. We investigated whether preoperative injection of 123-I-MIBG might be useful for intraoperative staging of chromaffine tumor cells. This was performed in a 46-year-old patient in whom the diagnosis of a malignant pheochromocytoma had been established by 123-I-MIBG imaging and enhanced catecholamine secretion. The rationale for intraoperative staging in this patient was a discrepancy between computed tomography (CI) of the abdomen and the radionuclide imaging, because scintigraphy revealed a mass with MIBG uptake in the right lower abdomen that could not be visualized b…

Organization of Zinc-Containing Terminal Fields in the Brain of the LizardPodarcis hispanica: A Histochemical Study

1988

The Timm method for the histochemical detection of metals defines accurately many terminal fields in the brain of mammals. This pattern is based on the presence of zinc within the synaptic vesicles of some boutons. The aim of this study was to use the Timm method for the anatomical description of the brain in a reptile. In the telencephalon, zinc staining was observed in the inner layer of the medial cortex, the inner and outer layers of both dorsomedial and dorsal cortices, the inner layer of the lateral cortex pars anterior ventralis, the lateral cortex pars profunda, the intermediate and caudal aspects of the anterior dorsal ventricular ridge, the marginal layer and hilus of the nucleus …

Unusual basement layer in the midgut of gammaridean Niphargus virei Chevreux (Crustacea, Amphipoda).

1988

The basement membrane of the midgut and posterior caeca epithelium in the gammaridean amphipod Niphargus virei Chevreux, 1896 is made of an unusual structure. This basal lamina, properly called “basal layer”, shows a dense sheet formed by a system of dense hexagonal plates connected by thin filaments. Histochemical studies and enzymatic reactions lead to the conclusion that these structures are proteinaceous, without collagenous protein, and embedded in a neutral polysaccharide matrix. The possible mechanical significance of these mesenteric structures is discussed.

Kinetics of in vivo inhibition of tissue cathepsin d by pepstatin A

1988

1. 1. We have investigated the kinetics of inhibition of cathepsin D in heart, liver and skeletal muscle of CD-1 mice following administration of 25, 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg i.p. of pepstatin A, a specific inhibitor of this protease. 2. 2. In the liver, a significant inhibition of cathepsin D occurred up to at least 15 days, whereas, in heart and skeletal muscle, this inhibition lasted for a much shorter period of time. 3. 3. These results show that the recovery of enzyme activity to normal values is dose-dependent and that, at the same dose level, marked differences occur in the recovery of enzyme activity in these organ tissues, the liver being the most sensitive one. © 1988.
