Diagnostic use of fructosamine assay in the control of type II diabetes mellitus.

In an attempt to evaluate the usefulness of fructosamine assay in monitoring type II diabetes, 142 diabetic patients were investigated. Fructosamine values were found to be higher in patients on insulin treatment than on oral hypoglycemic agents. In order to evaluate the metabolic control by using the correlated variations of F, Gm and HbAlc, the patients were subdivided into many control classes: mean values of fructosamine were higher in poorly controlled patients. Fructosamine however correlated better with glycemia in patients with recent variations in metabolic state than HbAlc. Ihren Krankheitswert erhalt die Obstipation im wesentlichen aber erst durch die subjektive Komponente, so das in die Definition der Obstipation eingehen kann: eine Stuhlentleerung, die nach Ansicht des Patienten eine Laxantieneinnahme erforderlich macht, die Notwendigkeit zum starken Pressen; zu harter Stuhl (sog. Schafskotstuhl) und das Gefuhl, sich nicht richtig entleeren zu konnen (Tabelle 1).

Growth and macromolecular content of the dimorphic fungus Aureobasidium pullulans and the effect of hydroxyurea and other inhibitors

The growth kinetics and the macromolecular content of the yeast and ethanol-induced hyphal forms of Aureobasidium pullulans were studied. During the morphological transition from yeasts to hyphae, both the protein and RNA content decreased significantly, the mycelial form containing only 76% of the amount of protein in the yeasts, and 38% of the RNA. The DNA was the only component tested whose level increased during the transition. Among several compounds inhibiting macromolecular synthesis, only hydroxyurea showed a remarkable effect on the morphology of A. pullulans, inducing the mycelial morphology. A simple method for the quantitative determination of tri-n-butylphosphate in blood plasma preparations is described. The sample is passed through an octadecyl extraction column from which tri-n-butylphosphate is eluted with chloroform. By capillary GC 50 micrograms/l tri-n-butylphosphate can be detected with a recovery of more than 90%.

Differential Effects of Verapamil on Various Gastric Lesions in Rats

Verapamil (3, 10, 20 mg/kg-1) increases the necrotizing effects of oral 25% NaCl or 100% ethanol. Damage by 0.6 N HCl was not equally affected since 1 mg/kg-1 of verapamil decreased the ulcer index whereas the higher doses augmented it. Pharmacologically induced gastric lesions were also differently affected by verapamil, ulcers produced by histamine being greatly enhanced and those of reserpine inhibited. Neither indomethacin nor compound 48/80 ulcers were modified. These results suggest that verapamil modifies the susceptibility of the gastric mucosa to damage.

Growth and activities of enzymes of primary metabolism in batch cultures of Catharanthus roseus cell suspension under different pCO2 conditions

In vitro enzyme activities of glycolysis, pentose-phosphate pathway and dark CO2 fixation were assayed in batch cultures of heterotrophic Catharanthus roseus cells under various gassing rates and partial pressures of carbon dioxide. Detrimental effects of low pCO2 culture conditions on the growth characteristics could be linked to marked changes in levels of enzymes of primary metabolism during growth. The enzyme levels observed during the early stages of growth were found to be more stable when a constant pCO2 (20 mbar) was maintained and enabled exponential growth to be reached more rapidly. The importance of carbon dioxide as a “conditioning factor” of the culture medium is discussed.

To evaluate the effectiveness of enteric-coated pancreatic enzyme supplements in comparison to conventional preparations of ingested enzyme on growth and nutritional parameters of patients with cystic fibrosis, we conducted a long-term study involving 40 patients. Correlations of blood selenium with hematological parameters in West German adults.

The serum selenium and the whole blood selenium of 72 healthy persons (47 women, 25 men) was determined. There exist sex specific differences of the whole blood selenium between men (98 +/- 19 micrograms Se/L) and women (89 +/- 17 micrograms Se/L). The serum selenium did not show sex specific differences, but sex specific differences are found if the total amount of extracellular selenium is calculated by correction of the serum selenium with the hematocrit. Women have more extra-cellular selenium/L whole blood (40 +/- 8 micrograms Se) than men (36 +/- 7 micrograms Se). Most grains belong to an igneous population whose U-Pb isotopic systematics define a straight line intersecting concordia at 2512 +/- 12 Ma, and this is interpreted as the time of crystallization of the original greenstone volcanics. Psoriasis is a disease affecting about 1–2% of the population worldwide, similar to diabetes mellitus.1 It occurs somewhat more frequently in the white population than among Asians and Eskimos.1 The disease has two peaks of onset, an early one occurring around the age of 20 and a later one around 60.2 In early-onset psoriasis, 85% of patients exhibit the HLA Cw6 antigen; in the late-onset group, no such pattern of inheritance can be found.2

In the paper a clustering technique to segment an image in to “homogeneous” regions is studied. The homogeneity of each region is evaluated by means of a “proximity function” computed between the pixels. The main result of such approach is that no-histogramming is required in order to perform segmentation.
