We describe three female patients in a family of two generations, who suffered from generalized and maximally pea-sized histiocytic tumors beginning in early adolescence. The disease ran a uniform and slowly progressive course and was confined to the skin. There were no signs of spontaneous tumor regression. Histologic, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural examination revealed the histiocytic nature of the tumors. An outstanding finding was a marked production of mucinous material, predominantly in long-standing tumors. Treatment of paediatric urolithiasis by extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy.

Non-surgical removal of renal and ureteral stones has proven successful in adults. In this study, 21 paediatric patients have been treated with the first generation extracorporeal shock-wave lithotriptor and an additional 13 children with a second generation local shock-wave lithotriptor. A total of 47 stones was treated. Treatment-related complications such as colics (17%/18.8%) or fever (8.3%/6.2%) were minimal. Stone passage occurred in 93% and 100%, respectively of each group. Open surgery is still the treatment of choice for large staghorn calculi. Extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy can be performed successfully in paediatric nephrolithiasis with stones of limited size.

A study of the enolization of some alkyl ketones in lyomesophases formed by alkylammonium surfactants

The kinetics of enolization of acetone, 3-pentanone, and 6-undecanone have been studied in lyotropic systems in the isotropic, nematic, and lamellar phases. The data, analysed in terms of spontaneous and acid-catalyzed rate constants, do not show any relevant influence of the physical nature of the phase. Effects are instead observed in relation to the length of the alkyl chains of the ketones and the type of the amphiphilic molecule. 6-undecanone has a surprising effect in stabilizing ordered mesophases.

Pharmacokinetics of methylmethacrylate monomer during total hip replacement in man.

The concentration of methylmethacrylate monomer (MMA) in the blood stream after implantation of the components of 15 total hip prostheses using bone cement was determined in the pulmonary artery, the radial artery, and the superior vena cava after cement application, and correlated with the observed drop in blood pressure and the increase in the pulmonary arterial pressure. In all samples MMA was found. The values ranged from 0.02 micrograms/ml to 59 micrograms/ml. The mean maximum value after implantation of the stem was measured to be 7.8 micrograms/ml in the pulmonary artery, 4.6 micrograms/ml in the radial artery, and 1.75 micrograms/ml in the superior vena cava. The surgical technique for creation of the Mainz pouch uses 10 to 15 cm. of cecum and ascending colon and 2 ileal loops of the same length for construction of a urinary reservoir. Initial applications of the Mainz pouch were for bladder augmentation after subtotal cystectomy and for continent urinary diversion. Summary Mechanically isolated cells from hypocotyl-derived calli of Sideritis angustifolia Lag. were inoculated on agar-solidified Murashige and Skoog (MS) nutrient medium containing CH and different concentrations and combinations of NAA and BA. Isolated cells underwent continued divisions giving rise to calli after 30 days of culture. Best results were obtained when medium was supplemented with 0.5 μM NAA and 4.4 or 8.8 μM BA or with 5 μM NAA and 4.4μM BA. Lining of total cheek mucosa defects can be accomplished by opening the tongue along its lateral border and preparing two myomucosa flaps that can be swung upward and downward like a double door to be sutured into the defect. The tongue is released 3 weeks later in a second-stage operation. The operation is quick and easy compared with other methods to achieve lining for such defects. Tongue function is not impaired after healing of the second-stage operation.

QCD formulation of the tau decay and determination of Lambda (MS)

Abstract We present a simple formulation of the inclusive and exclusive semi-hadronic decays of the tau lepton using QCD-duality finite energy sum rules (FESRs). We find that the tau decay is a good laboratory for measuring the QCD scaleΛ. Within the present experimental accuracy, we obtain Λ M S ¯ ⋍ 100–200 MeV to four loops. This prediction can be sensibly improved once the experimental situation has been clarified.

This article addresses the astronomical functioning of the lunar calendar of the Oromo Borana (Ethiopia and Kenya). It is based on the participant observation method, observing the night sky over a time of about one year with Bante Abbagala, a Borana expert in time reckoning. In this paper liquid mixture viscosities at 25 °C for 18 binary systems formed by primary n-alcohols have been measured. These values were fitted to Topological Treatment of Mixtures (T.T.M.) Crossover from Rouse to Reptation Dynamics: A Molecular-Dynamics Simulation

We present the results of an extensive molecular-dynamics simulation of a dense polymer system. We show for the first time that simulations are able to cover the whole regime from pure Rouse dynamics to reptation dynamics and give strong evidence of the latter. The mean square displacements clearly exhibit a ${t}^{\frac{1}{4}}$ power law. A mode analysis shows that the high-frequency modes follow the Rouse relaxation while those at lower frequency display reptation relaxation. Both quantities give the same entanglement length.

Analytic evaluation of spectral moments

In this paper an analytic procedure that drastically reduces the computational effort in evaluating the spectral moments of the response of multi-degree-of-freedom systems is presented. It is shown that the cross-spectral moments of any order of two oscillators subjected to a filtered stochastic process can be obtained in a recursive manner as a linear combination of the spectral moment of each oscillator up to the third order separately taken. A numerical procedure is also presented in order to evaluate such first few spectral moments.

An attempt was made in two experiments to reinvestigate the effects of the antiandrogen cyproterone acetate (CA) on mouse social behavior in a variety of ethologically-assessed paired encounters. The data confirm that CA reduces offense (threat and attack) in animals when both subjects receive the material but that CA has no such action in other pairings. This suggests that CA's major suppressive effect on "hostility" is expressed in mice via a reduction in "attack-promoting" pheromone production. The decays of three new neutron-rich nuclides $^{111}\mathrm{Tc}$, $^{113}\mathrm{Ru}$, and $^{113}\mathrm{Rh}$ have been observed at an on-line isotope separator facility. In addition, the beta decays of several other n-rich isotopes with Ag100 have been studied for the first time. The new half-lives reported in this work include: $^{111}\mathrm{Tc}$ [${T}_{1/2}$=0.30(3) s], $^{111}\mathrm{Ru}$ [2.12(7) s], $^{112}\mathrm{Ru}$ [1.75(7) s], $^{113}\mathrm{Ru}$ [0.80(10) s], $^{113}\mathrm{Rh}$ [2.72(22) s], and $^{118}\mathrm{Pd}$ [2.24(17) s]. In general, these results support the microscopic theoretical half-life predictions below Z=50.

Structure and Sensory Analyses of Tainting Substances in Finnish Freshwater Environments

GC/MS/SNIFF/TASTE methods have been used in Finland to identify the causes of three tainting problems in water and one in fish nets. Structure determination was often verified by comparison with authentic compounds. Algal growth was implicated to be the source of geosmin and MIB in river water in Northern Finland and was associated with the appearance of tainting problems in raw water and reservoir water in Åland county. Delayed filling of retinal and ciliary circulation after central retinal artery occlusion

The filling times of the retinal and choroidal circulation were evaluated in 17 patients with central retinal artery occlusion by means of fluorescein angiography. A correlation between the filling times of the two circulations was found. However, two filling patterns were seen: first, both fillings delayed; second, both fillings normal. It is probable that in the former case an obstructive disease of the carotid arteries exists, while in the latter case an important pathology of the carotid arteries is lacking, favouring a rapid restoration of the retinal circulation. This hypothesis seems to be confirmed by the results of the Doppler velocimetry of the carotid arteries.

This hypothesis could explain the increase of beta 2-microglobulin serum levels during virally induced mononucleosis, but not elevated levels as observed in other virally induced and in malignant diseases. In this paper we demonstrate that beta 2-microglobulin is a true secretory protein, and that its synthesis in hepatocytes is modulated by IFNs but not by IL-1.
