Effect of gut-derived acetate on oral glucose tolerance in man.

1988

1. Dietary fibre has a moderating impact on glucose metabolism. To test the hypothesis that this effect of fibre may be mediated by its breakdown product acetate, oral glucose tolerance tests were carried out in healthy volunteers with and without acetate. 2. Five subjects received 50 g of glucose orally while taking either acetate (15 mmol every 15 min) by mouth or chloride as control. Oral acetate made no detectable difference to glucose tolerance or to levels of free fatty acids, 3-hydroxybutyrate, lactate, insulin, glucagon and gastric inhibitory polypeptide. 3. The 50 g dose of glucose temporarily depressed acetate levels in blood. This was probably due to an interaction between glucos…

Delayed postnatal neurogenesis in the cerebral cortex of lizards

1988

Labelled cells were consistently observed in the medial cortex of the lizard brain after i.p. injections of tritiated thymidine (5 microCi/g b. wt.), 1, 7, 18 or 28 days of survival and posterior autoradiographic evaluation. In 3 groups of specimens (postnatal, young and adult) of the species Podarcis hispanica, after one day of survival, labelled cells were located in the ependymal cell layer underlying the medial cortex. After intermediate survival times (7, 18 days), labelled cells were found in 3 zones: the ependymal layer, the inner plexiform layer and the granular layer. After one month of survival, most labelled cells were observed in the granular layer. In the granular layer, these …

Cercospora beticola Toxin Inhibits Vanadate-Sensitive H+ Transport in Corn Root Membrane Vesicles

1988

The effect of Cercospora beticola toxin on the transport of protons by vanadate-sensitive ATPase was studied with corn (Zea mays) root microsomal vesicles prepared by differential centrifugation, sedimentation through a sucrose cushion, and washing with Triton X-100 plus KBr. In these preparations, addition of ATP induced intravesicular H(+)-accumulation as evidenced by a rapid quenching of the fluorescence of 9-amino-6-chloro-2-methoxy acridine. This quenching was relatively unaffected by inhibitors of mitochondrial and tonoplast-type ATPases, but was strongly reduced by inhibitors of plasma membrane H(+)-ATPase. C. beticola toxin markedly inhibited ATP dependent H(+)-transport, and this e…

Enthalpies of mixing of some nitriles aqueous solutions with dodecylsurfactants micellar solutions

1988

The enthalpies of mixing of some n-nitriles (from acetonitrile to valeronitrile) aqueous solutions with dodecyltzimethylammonium bromide, sodium dodecylsulfate and dodecyltzimethylammonium oxide micellar solutions were determined. The measurements were performed by systematically changing the surfactant concentration at a given solute concentration. The experimental enthalpies were rationalized in terms of the standard enthalpy of transfer of solute from the aqueous to the micellar phase and of the distribution constant between the two phase. Information on the effect of the nature of the surfactant on the standard thermodynamic quantities of transfer(ΔG t o , ΔH t o , TΔS t o ) is reported…

Laser Pulse Effects in Two-level Systems Driven by Coherent and Fluctuating Radiation Fields

1988

Abstract We reconsider the problem of a two-level system interacting with a radiation field in order to study some new features suggested by the actual experimental conditions. Pulse shape and duration effects are included in the formalism and the counter-rotating terms are retained. The criterion of validity of the rotating wave approximation (RWA) for pulsed fields is investigated; generalizing results well known in RWA, we establish some new formal results, including non-RWA contributions to all orders and for any pulse shape. The analysis is then carried out for fluctuating fields, by developing a method based on the theory of multiplicative stochastic differential equations. For short …

Convexly generic curves in R 3

1988

We study curves immersed in R 3, with special interest in the description of their convex hull frontier structure from a global viewpoint. Genericity conditions are set for these curves by looking at the singularities of height functions on them. We define panel structures for convexly generic curves and work out numerical relations involving the number of tritangent support planes. As a consequence, a generic version of the 4-vertex theorem for convex curves in R 3 is obtained.

Teacher stress during an autumn term in Finland: Four types of stress processes

1988

Abstract This Finnish study examines teachers' stress in order to clarify how stress manifests itself and to describe any observed differences in the teachers' background, personality and coping variables. The research design was longitudinal. One hundred and fifty-three teachers made repeated assessments (six in all) of the indicators of stress (subjective mood ratings) by means of questionnaires during the autumn term of 1983. The background variables were based on questionnaire responses gathered in the autumn of 1983. Four different teacher groups emerged according to the type of stress reported: (1) teachers who were exhausted throughout the term; (2) those who recovered from stress on…

Effects of Clomipramine on Sleep EEG and Nocturnal Penile Tumescence

1988

The effects of the tricyclic antidepressant clomipramine on sleep EEG and nocturnal penile tumescence (NPT) were investigated during a long-term study in a normal male control subject. During 21 consecutive days the subject received first placebo for 3 days, then stepwise increasing dosages of clomipramine for 10 days, and finally placebo after withdrawal for 8 days. Under clomipramine, rapid eye movement (REM) sleep was suppressed markedly; an REM rebound occurred after withdrawal. Awake and stages 1 and 2 increased while slow wave sleep was diminished under clomipramine. Those non-REM parameters returned to baseline values after drug cessation. NPT was reduced simultaneously with REM slee…

Stress response in Drosophila subobscura

1988

The pattern of puffing and protein synthesis was determined in individuals of Drosophila subobscura subjected to heat shock. Depending on the extent of the heat treatment, the response at the puffing level varied. Some puffs were expressed at 31°–34°C, and others at 37° C. Considering the response as a whole the depression of gene activity after shock at 31°–34° C in individuals raised at 19° C was greater than with the other treatments. Six major heat shock proteins (Hsps) were found in this species. The properties of the high molecular weight proteins are conserved their electrophoretic characteristics and the range of temperatures over which they are synthesized are close to those in oth…

Principal neurons projecting to the pineal gland in close association with small intensely fluorescent cells in the superior cervical ganglion of rats

1988

The localization in the superior cervical ganglia (SCG) of small, intensely fluorescent (SIF) cells and of principal nerve (PN) cells innervating the pineal gland was examined in adult male Sprague-Dawley rats. PN cells were demonstrated by means of the retrograde neuron-tracing method using the fluorescent tracer Fluoro-Gold (FG) injected into the pineal gland. SIF cells were visualized by the formaldehyde-induced fluorescence method. Twenty-nine percent of the FG-labeled PN cells were found closely associated with SIF cells. In the rostral half of the ganglion, 43% of the SIF cells were situated in juxtaposition to one or several labeled neurons. The possible influence of SIF cells on the…

Ground-state properties of generalized Heisenberg chains with composite spin.

1988

We consider in detail the ground-state properties of recently introduced generalized Heisenberg models which can have several spin operators at each site and which interpolate smoothly between Heisenberg chains of different spin lengths. We show that the mappings to field-theoretical models used to describe the critical properties of the Heisenberg model remain valid in the composite-spin model. In models which interpolate between the spin-(1/2 and the spin-1 behavior, these mappings predict an extended singlet phase around the isotropic antiferromagnetic point whenever the models move away from the spin-(1/2 point. Numerical calculations on finite chains seem to confirm the existence of th…

Glycated serum proteins and glucose tolerance

1988

Glycated serum proteins (GSP), stable glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) together with some metabolic parameters were evaluated in 120 subjects, 30 with normal glucose tolerance (NGT), 30 with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), 30 with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDD), and 30 with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDD). GSP levels were significantly higher in IGT, NIDD and IDD than in NGT. HbA1c levels were not significantly higher in IGT in comparison with NGT, but were significantly higher in NIDD and in IDD than in NGT and IGT. GSP correlated better than HbA1c with all metabolic parameters considered. Taking into account the distribution of the values, GSP showed a smaller overl…

Crystal cell pattern modification in a melanotic tumor strain of Drosophila melanogaster.

1988

3rd instar larvae of the melanotic tumor tu-pb strain of Drosophila melanogaster hold a lower number of free-circulating crystal cells in their hemolymph than the wild type ones. This pattern could result from an abnormal retention of mature crystal cells in the hematopoietic organs, as the strong hemocyte melanization inside the lymph glands of heat-treated tu-pb larvae seems to demonstrate. Melanotic tumor formation and modification of the crystal cell pattern may be related.

ChemInform Abstract: Electrical Breakdown and Pitting in Anodic Films on Tungsten in Halogen Ion-Containing Solutions.

1988

Abstract The systematic investigation of the anodic behaviour of W in halogen ion-containing solutions reveals noticeable differences in the presence of different anions. Strong generalized dissolution is observed in fluoride solutions, the oxide growth being hindered at low anodizing current densities. Sparking phenomena occur in the presence of Br− and I− anions as in nitrate and sulphate solutions. Only in Cl− containing solutions is the growth of the anodic films limited by the occurrence of pitting phenomena at a critical thickness of the oxide. The laws of dependence of the phenomenon on the experimental parameters and the influence of ferrous ions on the voltage at which pitting occu…

ChemInform Abstract: Electrical and Mechanical Breakdown of Anodic Films on Tungsten in Aqueous Electrolytes.

1988

Abstract Different types of breakdown are reported to occur during the galvanostatic growth of WO3 films in different aqueous electrolytes. Stresses inside the growing film cause the occurrence of cracks at a critical thickness which varies with the anodizing solution. The electrical breakdown is caused by avalanche ionization of the electronic current inside the film. The influence of the different experimental parameters on both the mechanical and the electrical breakdown voltages is discussed. For the electrical breakdown a model is proposed which explains the dependence of the sparking voltage on the electrolyte resistivity by assuming a double layer effect on the oxygen evolution react…

Two changes of the same nucleotide confer resistance to diuron and antimycin in the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene of Schizosaccharomyces pombe

1988

AbstractDiuron (3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea) and antimycin, both inhibitors of mitochondrial respiration, block electron flow between cytochromes b and c1. Mutants resistant to either drug have been selected using Schizosaccharomyces pombe strains with an extrachromosomally inherited mutator. In analogy to Saccharomyces cerevisiae these mutational sites were assumed to map in the cytochrome b gene. DNA sequence analysis showed that two changes in the same nucleotide are responsible for resistance to antimycin and diuron. Analysis of resistant and sensitive progeny of crosses between the mutants and the wild type confirmed the correlation between mutational alteration and resista…

Method for evaluating the bioconversion of radioactive polyunsaturated fatty acids by use of reversed-phase liquid chromatography

1988

Abstract Reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography on a thermostatted octadecylsilyl column was used to separate mixtures of labelled polyunsaturated fatty acids (as their methyl esters) formed by successive desaturations and elongations of labelled linoleic (18:2 n - 6) or linolenic (18:3 n -3) acid by rat liver microsomes. Acetonitrile-water mixtures were used for elution of the esters. Unsaturated and saturated esters were detected by their refractive indices. The order of elution of fatty acid methyl esters in complex mixtures varies as a function of the chain length and unsaturation, analysis temperature, water concentration and solvent flow-rate. The peak areas vary as a f…

Antihistaminic and anticholinergic activities of mequitazine in comparison with clemizole

1988

Abstract The antihistamine and anticholinergic properties of mequitazine have been investigated and compared with those of clemizole. Both mequitazine and clemizole antagonized the effect of histamine in guinea-pig ileum competitively, the pA2 values calculated by Schild plot were 9.95 ± 0.44 for mequitazine and 10.54 ± 0.44 for clemizole. Mequitazine at 10−7 M produced a parallel shift of the dose-response curve to acetylcholine in the rat duodenum, clemizole and the lower doses of mequitazine failed to modify the effect of acetylcholine. The potency of mequitazine and clemizole as H1-histamine blockers is similar, but only mequitazine at highest concentration used showed anticholinergic a…

Heterocyclic photorearrangements. Photoinduced rearrangements of 1,2,4-oxadiazoles substituted by an XYZ side chain sequence

1988

Photoinduced rearrangements of 1,2,4-oxadiazoles substituted by an XYZ side chain sequence at position 3 of the ring have been recognized. Examples taken out from previous results have been emphasized and some other patterns dealing with a 3-phenoxy and 3-enaminoketone sequence have been investigated. An intermediate species derived from photolysis of the ring O-N bond and characterized by a continuous 6π electron system involving the side chain sequence, was suggested to give ring closure to the rearrangement product.

Quadrupole interaction of $^{8}$Li and $^{9}$Li in LiNbO$_{3}$ and the quadrupole moment of $^{9}$Li

1988

The quadrupole interaction of nuclear spin polarized8Li (I=2) and9Li (I=3/2) in LiNbO3 has been studied at room temperature. The polarization was achieved by optical pumping of a fast atomic beam with circularly polarized laser light. The atoms were implanted into a hexagonal LiNbO3 single crystal and the quadrupole splitting ofβ-NMR spectra was measured. A ratio of ¦Q(9Li)/Q(8Li)¦=0.88(4) for the nuclear quadrupole moments was deduced, yielding a new value of ¦Q(9Li)¦=25.3 (9) mb for the quadrupole moment of9Li.

Using sodium metrizoate discontinuous gradients, two hemolysin-producer amebocyte populations have been separated from total circulating Holothuria polii coelomocytes. The amebocytes of population 1 are responsible for the production of the calcium-dependent and temperature-labile hemolysin, whereas those of population 2 produce the calcium-independent and temperature-stable one. The intracytoplasmic hemolysins were evidenced also by immunofluorescence. Petaloid and filipodial amebocytes were the only positive cell types.

Same–different discrepancy in an exhaustive matching task

1988

In this study, we investigated in a multistimulus matching task the size of the discrepancy between response times for “same” and response times for “different” judgments. Frequently, results have shown that “same” judgments are faster than “different” judgments. Krueger (1984) found inversion in the speed advantage when stimuli were presented simultaneously and concluded that a self-termination factor would explain this result. In the experiment reported here, the subject had to exhaustively scan the whole set of items in the stimulus string. The analysis shows no significant interaction of presentation and response type; that is, the advantage for same stimuli is not reduced for simultane…

Effect of nutritional imbalances on cytochrome P-450 isozymes in rat liver

1988

Male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed for six weeks either a control diet containing 22% casein (C) and 5% fat (F) or a low-protein diet (6% C, 5% F) or high-lipid diet (30% C, 30% F). A group of rats received a control diet containing 50 ppm of Phenoclor DP6. Three major forms of cytochrome P-450, UT 50, BP 3a and MC 2 were purified from livers of DP6-fed rats and only two forms, UT 50 and PB 3a, were purified from control and dietary groups. The amino acid composition and the catalytic activities towards all substrates tested were only significantly modified in the purified UT 50 P-450 isozyme from rats fed the low-protein diet. The N-terminal sequence analysis shows that cytochrome P-450 UT …
