Endocrine and Clinical Evaluation of 107 Patients With Advanced Prostatic Carcinoma Under Long-Term Pernasal Buserelin or Intramuscular Decapeptyl De…

1988

Three major assumptions emerged from these clinical and endocrine long-term studies. First, buserelin, given pernasally in the conventional doses, and Decapeptyl microcapsules administered intramuscularly in 5-week intervals are equally effective in terms of their long-term castration effect in previously untreated patients with prostatic carcinoma. However, Decapeptyl causes complete LH and subsequent testosterone down-regulation 1 week earlier than buserelin. Furthermore, this treatment is more convenient, and the compliance is better. Both LHRH analogues are equally well tolerated. Second, in groups of prostate cancer patients with far advanced disease treated with palliative intention, …

Effect of body weight on the volume of distribution of theophylline.

1988

The volume of distribution (Vd) of theophylline and the relevant aminophylline loading dose (LD) are usually calculated on the basis of total body weight (TBW). In obese subjects it has been suggested that lean or ideal body weight (IBW) is the best predictor. In a sample of 40 acutely ill asthmatic patients (aged 22 to 78 yr, weighing 45 to 176 kg) we measured Vd and found that (1) it increases with TBW, (2) it cannot be accurately predicted from either TBW or IBW alone by a simple regression analysis. Power functions have been usefully applied in comparing the pharmacokinetics of animal species, including humans, with different body mass. In our sample, data were best fitted by the equati…

On the momentum dependence ofJ/? suppression

1988

The formation of deconfined matter in high energy collisions is expected to result in reducedJ/ψ production. The finite space-time extension of any quark-gluon plasma thus produced leads to a rather characteristic dependence ofJ/ψ suppression on the longitudinal and transverse momentum of theJ/ψ. We study in particular the longitudinal momentum dependence and discuss its implications for nuclear collision experiments.

Observation of strongly deformed ground-state configurations in $^{184}$Au and $^{183}$Au by laser spectroscopy

1988

Resonance ionization mass spectroscopy (RIMS) and pulsed-laser induced desorption (PLID) have been combined in order to study the isotope shift (IS) and hyperfine structure (HFS) of184Au (T1/2=53 s) and183Au (T1/2=42 s) in the 6s2S1/2 → 6p2P1/2 (λ=267 nm) transition. The Au isotopes were obtained as daughters in the decay of184,183Hg produced and mass separated at the new ISOLDE-3 facility at CERN. It was found that the strong deformationβ2}-0.25 setting in at186Au persists down to183Au.

Solute retention in reversed-phase chromatography as a function of stationary phase properties: Effect of n-alkyl chain length and ligand density

1988

Two series of bonded phases were synthesized employing LiChrospher Si 100, 10 μm and n-alkyldimethylmonochlorosilanes as silanizing reagents. In series A the n-alkyl chain length, n, of the bonded phase was varied between 1 and 20 at a constant ligand density of 3.5±0.2μmol·m−2. In series B the ligand density, d, was gradually changed from 0 to 4.1μmol·m−2 on the C1, C4, C6, C8 and C18 bonded phases, respectively.

Sensitivity and mode spectrum of a frequency-output silicon pressure sensor

1988

The vibrational mode spectrum of a silicon vibrating pressure sensor is investigated. Particular attention is given to the analysis of the vibration shapes, quality factors and relative sensitivity of the resonance frequencies as a function of pressure. It is shown that a pressure sensitivity of a few parts per million at one atmosphere can be achieved. Some comments are also made regarding an improved design of the device.

Proton-neutron correlations and the longitudinal nuclear response

1988

We study the influence of the proton-neutron correlations, in particular of the tensor ones, on the longitudinal nuclear response. They generate a high-energy tail that we evaluate. We show that this tail produces an apparent quenching of the Coulomb sum rule. The amount of quenching found is significant, although insufficient to explain the totality of the missing strength.

Nuclear moments from laser spectroscopy

1988

The systematic laser spectroscopy measurements of nuclear spins, moments and charge radii from hyperfine structures and isotope shifts are reviewed from a methodical point of view. Examples are given for the typical experimental approaches and their results. Laser spectroscopy methods of direct nuclear g-factor measurement have interesting features in common with the low-temperature nuclear orientation technique. These are described in some detail and discussed in their particular physics context.

Radiative lifetimes of Am I atomic levels.

1988

The lifetimes of several atomic levels of Am I that are connected by electric dipole transitions to the ground state have been measured. The Am atoms were excited by light pulses from a cw single-mode dye laser with the aid of an optoacoustic modulator. The decay curve of the delayed emitted photons was measured by counting single photons in the beam-off periods. The lifetimes of 14 levels in the wavelength region between 6405 and 4265 A were measured using Am-metal vapor. The metallic Am was obtained by reducing AmO/sub 2/ with La at 1500 /sup 0/C in a high-vacuum system and collecting Am on a catcher foil. The Am vapor was then produced by controlled reevaporation from the foil at a tempe…

Ferroelectricity in {N(CH3)4}2ZnI4

1988

Dielectric properties of the {N(CH 3 ) 4 } 2 ZnI 4 crystal were studied between room temperature and 4.2 K. Two phase transitions were seen from dielectric constant anomalies at T 1 =254 K and T c =210 K on cooling. Ferroelectric hysteresis loops were observed along the c -direction below T c with a low frequency applied field of 0.0025 Hz. The spontaneous polarization obtained by pyroelectric charge measurement tended to be 2.5×10 -3 C/m 2 at 0 K.

Comparison between the directly measured achilles tendon force and the tendon force calculated from the ankle joint moment during vertical jumps.

1988

Summary The purpose of this study was to compare the relationship between the achilles tendon force and the tendon force estimated from the ankle joint moment (EATF) during vertical jump. A healthy male subject performed the following jumps on the force platform: (a) maximal vertical jump from a squat position without counter-movement; (b) maximal vertical jump from an erect standing position with a preliminary counter-movement; (c) repetitive submaximal hopping on the spot with preferred frequency. The achilles tendon force was measured directly with an implanted tendon transducer in all jumping conditions. In addition the joint moment obtained from the film and ground reaction force was u…

UV-induced cross-linking of proteins to plasmid pBR322 containing 8-azidoadenine 2′-deoxyribonucleotides

1988

Abstract An efficient method of cross-linking DNA to protein is described. The method is based on the incorporation of photoactive 8-azidoadenine 2′-deoxyribonucleotides into DNA. We have found that 8-N 3 dATP is a substrate for E. coli DNA polymerase I and that 8-N 3 dATP can be incorporated into plasmid pBR322 by nick-translation. Subsequently we were able to cross-link a set of different proteins to 8-azido-2′-deoxyadenosine-containing pBR322 by UV irradiation (366 nm). No DNA-protein photocross-linking was observed under the same conditions when the non-photoactive plasmid pBR322 was used.

Thermodynamic properties and conductivities of some dodecylsurfactants in water

1988

Densities, heat capacities, enthalpies of dilution, osmotic coefficients and conductivities are reported for dodecylamine hydrochloride, dodecyldimethylammonium and dodecyltrimethylammonium chloride in water over a wide range of concentration. The last two properties were also measured for dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide. From the thermodynamic data partial molar volumes, heat capacities and relative enthalpies and nonideal free energies and entropies were derived as a function of the surfactant concentration. The cmc's and degree of counterion dissociation were also calculated from the transport properties. It is shown that the trends of volumes, enthalpies, free energies and entropies ar…

Electrophysiological findings of neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis in heterozygotes.

1988

Nineteen obligate heterozygotes, 8 individuals at risk of being heterozygote, and 10 patients afflicted with four different forms of neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis were examined electrophysiologically. The group of obligate heterozygotes was compared to age-matched control groups. Statistically significant differences were found between scotopic b-wave amplitudes, P-ERG amplitudes, and EOG light peaks of the obligate carriers of the juvenile type and the control subjects. The photopic L-ERGs and the latencies of the VEPs were mostly within the normal range. The findings represent the first evidence of functional ophthalmological changes in obligate carriers of neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis…

The Molecular Analysis of the Light Adaptation Reactions in the Yellow‐green Alga Pleurochloris meiringensis (Xanthophyceae)

1988

The xanthophycean alga Pleurochloris meiringensis was homocontinuously cultured under high light (16 W/m2) and low light (2 W/m2) conditions. In low light cells, the chlorophyll a content and the dry weight on per cell basis is increased, the maximal photosynthetic capacity per chlorophyll is decreased. The content of chlorophyll c, vaucheriaxanthin-ester and heteroxanthin is similar in both cultures, whereas the content of diadinoxanthin and s-carotene is twice as high in high light cultures. High light cells contain more photosystem I and cytochrome f per chlorophyll than low light cells, whereas the QB content is found to be unchanged. Therefore, the ratio reaction center II/reaction cen…

Stability of the VEV hierarchy and Higgs boson invisibility in majoron models

1988

Abstract We study the stability of the lepton-number breaking VEV under radiative corrections in the doublet and triplet majoron models, including the effects of a heavy top quark. We find that it is possible to maintain the hierarchy between the VEV's, at the one-loop level, by fine tuning the ratio of two coupling constants in the Higgs potential. For a top quark heavier than 50–60 GeV the required relation depends strongly on the top mass. We use this relation to show that the decay mode of the neutral Higgs boson to majorons may be the dominant one for a wide range of the Higgs mass, thus making its detection, in this class of models, more problematic.

Adrenergic modulation of the release of 5-hydroxytryptamine from the vascularly perfused ileum of the guinea-pig

1988

1. Isolated segments of the guinea-pig ileum were vascularly perfused and the release of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) into the portal venous effluent was determined by h.p.l.c. with electrochemical detection. Test substances were applied via the arterial perfusion medium. 2. Isoprenaline (0.1 microM) increased the outflow of 5-HT and 5-HIAA maximally by about 75% and this was antagonized by propranolol (0.1 microM). Forskolin (1-10 microM) increased the outflow of 5-HT by approximately 105% and that of 5-HIAA by approximately 55%. The phosphodiesterase inhibitor AH 21-132 (0.1-1 microM) increased the outflow of 5-HT and 5-HIAA by about 70%. Isoprenaline…

Terminally differentiated postmitotic tumor cells in a rat rhabdomyosarcoma cell line.

1988

A permanent rat rhabdomyosarcoma cell line (BA-HAN-1C) has been established, the phenotype of which is characterized by the coexistence of undifferentiated mononuclear cells and differentiated multinuclear myotube-like giant cells. The failure of attempts to separate these two cell types by repeated recloning procedures indicates their close histogenetic relationship and suggests that differentiation in this tumor proceeds in a similar manner to that in normal striated muscle where postmitotic myotubes arise from mononuclear myoblasts by fusion. The morphologically undifferentiated mononuclear tumor cells were shown to be actively proliferating and to incorporate thymidine methyl-3H(3H-TdR)…

1988

Suprapontine brain sites acting on the central respiratory system have been demonstrated to give rise to inspiratory as well as expiratory facilitatory effects. In the present study the inspiratory inhibitory effect which has been reported in the cat to be elicited consistently by electrical stimulation of the rubrospinal tract and the adjacent mesencephalic reticular formation was examined in the urethane-anaesthetized rabbit. Stimulation of these sites with single electrical shocks of moderate intensity induced a short latency (onset after 3.0 ms) transient (duration: 29 ms) inhibition of the phrenic nerve activity (PHR). Clonal analysis of human T cell activation by the Mycoplasma arthritidis mitogen (MAS)

1988

Mycoplasma arthritidis produces an as yet undefined soluble molecule (MAS) that has a potent mitogenic effect on T cells of several species. We have used cloned human cytotoxic and proliferative T lymphocytes to dissect the molecular mechanism of T cell activation by this mitogen. Reactivity to MAS is clonally expressed among T cell receptor (TcR) alpha/beta chain-expressing T cell clones of CD4+ or CD8+ phenotype, as well as CD4-8- TcR alpha/beta chain-negative T lymphocyte clones expressing the CD3-associated TcR gamma chain. MAS is able to induce cytotoxicity and/or proliferation in these T cell clones. For triggering of these T cells, regardless of their phenotype of specificity, the pr…

Relaxant effect of dopamine on the isolated rat uterus.

1988

The effect of dopamine was studied on the isolated uterus of diethylstilboestrol-treated rats. Dopamine, at concentrations (10(7)-10(-4) M) produced a concentration-dependent relaxation in the K+-depolarized rat uterus. On a molar basis, dopamine was about 500 times less potent than adrenaline in relaxing the uterus, the maximum degree of relaxation obtained with both drugs was the same. Pretreatment of the rats with reserpine (5 mg/kg) did not produce any modification of the dose-response curve to dopamine. Similarly, cocaine (3 x 10(-6) M) failed to modify the relaxant effect of dopamine. The dopamine induced relaxation was inhibited by propranolol (10(-9)-10(-7) M) in a dose-dependent ma…
