Deuteron photodisintegration with the Bonn OBE potentials

The various OBE approximations to the recent Bonn potential are studied in deuteron photodisintegration below π-threshold. Consistent static meson-exchange currents, isobar currents, and the relativistic spin-orbit current are included. Concerning the OBEPT also the leading retardation corrections in the currents are taken into account. Comparison with experimental data is carried out in detail.

Cloning and Characterization of Overlapping DNA Fragments of the Toxin A Gene of Clostridium difficile

Clostridium difficile, a human pathogen, produces two very large protein toxins, A and B (250-600 kDa), which resist dissociation into subunits. To clone the toxin A gene, a genomic library of 3-8 kb chromosomal DNA fragments of C. difficile strain VPI 10463 established in pUC12 was screened with a rabbit polyclonal toxin A antiserum. Thirty-five clones were isolated which carried 2.5-7.0 kb inserts representing a 10 kb region of the C. difficile genome. All the inserts were oriented in the same direction, suggesting that toxin A gene expression was under control of the lac promoter of the pUC12 vector. Six patients with chronic type B hepatitis and concurrent infection with the immunodeficiency virus were treated with 600 mg azidothymidine (AZT)/day and 3 X 10(6) units of interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha) every other day for a total of 4 months. None of the patients treated lost the hepatitis B virus (HBV). HBV-DNA concentrations were not significantly influenced by this treatment. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection was also not affected except for a transient rise in CD 4-positive cells in 2 individuals, who had initially low CD 4-positive cells. An 2 7 Frauen und 11 Mannern mit Akromegalie wurde die Knochendichte in Single-Photonenabsorptionstechnik am proximalen (uberwiegend Kompakta) und distalen (uberwiegend Spongiosa) Mespunkt des Unterarms untersucht. Die Knochendichte lag dabei am proximalen Mespunkt im zu erwartenden Altersnormbereich, am distalen Mespunkt war sie deutlich erhoht (p < 0,001). Die mit quantitativer Computertomographie gemessene Spongiosa der Lendenwirbelsaule fanden wir uber das Alter hinaus vermindert. Als Ausdruck eines gesteigerten Knochenabbaus fanden wir das Hydroxyprolin im Urin erhoht, wahrend sich das Osteocalcin als Marker der Osteoblastenaktivitat invers dazu verhielt.

Complex objects modeling: An entity-relationship approach

Facilities for complex object modeling are nowadays needed in several areas of database applications (CAD/CAM, office automation, robotics, ...). Consequently, either new models are developed, or existing ones are extended to better respond to this requirement. Current proposals in the latter category are mainly based on the relational approach (with, as major outcome, the NF2 family of models) or on functional models like DAPLEX. This paper intends to show that the entity-relationship approach may secure an equivalent result, preserving the well known advantages inherent to this approach : increased readability and graphical display of the database schema.
Studies on the Effect of Cell Division-inhibiting Herbicides on Unialgal and Mixed Algal Cultures

The effect of two cell division inhibiting herbicides on unialgal and mixed algal cultures was studied in laboratory tests. The herbicides studied were trifluralin (analytical grade) and the active ingredient as well as the preparation (80 % a.i.) of diphenamid. The three green algal species used were Selenastrum capricornutum PRINTZ, Scenedesmus quadricauda (TURP.) BREB., Oocystis parva W. et G. S. WEST. The response of algae to herbicides was determined by cell counting, and measured by turbidity (750 nm) and the 02-production of some of the treated cultures. Abstract A series of thirty two 6-hydroxylated steroids were synthesized by selective reduction of the 4–5 double bond, the 3-oxo group, and/or the 20-oxo group of 6α- and 6β-hydroxyDOC. The different reactions leading to the production of specific isomers are discussed. The gas chromatographic and spectrometric characteristics of the methoxime-trimethylsilyl (MO-TMS) or trimethylsilyl (TMS) derivatives of the isomers obtained are given. The gas chromatographic separation of the syn- and anti -isomers of the methoxime in position 3 was found to be characteristic of the configuration of the hydroxyl in position 6. The regional distribution of opioidergic nerves in the juvenile and adult human prostate and in the adult canine prostate has been studied immunohistochemically using well-characterized polyclonal antisera against multiple opioid peptides. Nerves displaying immunoreactivity (ir) for the proenkephalin (PRO-ENK) derivatives met-enkephalin (ME), leuenkephalin (LE), octapeptide, and heptapeptide (ordered in decreasing frequency) were present in the dorsolateral stroma of human prostate. We have used the multidimensional or multifractal formalism to study the large scale luminosity segregation of the CfA catalogue. In every sample we have analyzed, it has been found that the spectrum of scaling indices is scale invariant and that bright galaxies are more clustered than faint galaxies.

The effects of stimulation with either 10 mumol/l norepinephrine or 85 mmol/l extracellular potassium concentration on calcium uptake were studied in muscle strips from human renal calyces and from the renal pelvis. The apparent uptake of calcium under control conditions was essentially complete after 30 min. Stimulation of the muscle strips with norepinephrine or high external potassium significantly (P less than 0.05) increased the calcium uptake over the control values at 30 and 100 min, whereas 45Ca efflux was virtually not affected. Twenty-nine cases of Acute Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL) rupture were collected out of' 251 <..'tlses of Acute Capsule-Ligament knee injuries f'rom 1971 to 1983. The anatomy, function and blood supply are reviewed. Two mechanisms of injury are distinguished. The true significance of the posterior drawer-sign is discussed. Average follow-up was of 4,6 years (range 2-12). Excellent results werw obtained by surgical treatment in isolated lesions and good results in combined lesions.

High-resolution sorption studies of argon and nitrogen on large crystals of microporous zeolite ZSM-5

High resolution adsorption (HRADS) with argon and nitrogen at 77 K were performed on large crystals of zeolite ZSM-5 using a novel volumetric device. Multi-step isotherms for both adsorptives could be observed for the first time. The micropore filling was followed by low temperature microcalorimetry. Exothermic heats of adsorption were found to be correlated with steps in the adsorption isotherms. Based on results from atom-atom potential energy calculations (AAP) as well as from independent model building it is shown that 24 kinetic adsorbate molecules can be situated in a ZSM-5 unit cell. Polyclonal antibodies were raised against the purified aggregation factor (AF) from the sponge Geodia cydonium to elucidate possible immunological relationships between adhesion molecules of lower multicellular eukaryotic systems (sponges) and those of vertebrates. This anti-AF recognized a series of polypeptides associated with the AF, among them also a polypeptide with a Mr of 47,000 (p47). The formation of the antibody-p47 immunocomplexes could be prevented by adsorbing the anti-AF with a brain extract from DBA/2J mice.
