Long-Term Enoximone Therapy in Unstable Chronic Heart Failure

Long-term safety and efficacy of oral enoximone were evaluated in 32 patients with unstable chronic heart failure despite digitalis, diuretics, and vasodilator therapy. Oral enoximone, 75-150 mg t.i.d. was given for an average of 32 weeks. At baseline, 21 patients were in NYHA functional class IV, 10 patients in class III, and 1 patient in class II. Within 12 weeks, 14 of 20 patients surviving for more than 26 weeks had improved by at least one functional class. Hemodynamic data showed an 18% increase of cardiac index and a 34% decrease of diastolic pulmonary artery pressure. Abstract Regiospecific lithiation of (1,2,3) triazolo(1,5-a)pyridines (1) and (4) with subsequent reaction with styryl azide gave small yields of the 7-aminotriazolopyridines (6) and (7). A longer larger scale synthesis of compounds (6) and (7) is described giving overall yields of 17 and 25%, starting from 2-amino-6-methyl (9) or 2-amino-6-ethyl pyridine (19).

A simple procedure to carry out the direct analysis of calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium in water by flow injection analysis (FIA) using flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) or flame photometry (FP) has been developed, using a well stirred dilution chamber to extend the calibration range, and both a double injector and the merging zone technique to add a lanthanum solution to samples and standards. The authors present the results obtained in a group of 58 risk cases out of a series of 164 patients with Perthes' disease. Analysis is carried out in terms of patient age and the therapeutic approach employed. After evaluating the results, the approach involving retention of the femoral head within the cotylum was found to be superior, with femoral varization osteotomy (with or without derotation) being clearly favored by the authors in this series.

Effects of Trimipramine on Sleep EEG, Penile Tumescence and Nocturnal Hormonal Secretion

Sleep EEG, nocturnal penile tumescence (NPT) and nocturnal endocrine activity were studied in 3 male control subjects during placebo, under trimipramine (TR) and after withdrawal. TR did not change the sleep structure. NPT activity tended to increase under TR. Nocturnal plasma cortisol levels decreased markedly while the early morning rise of cortisol appeared delayed under 200 mg TR. After withdrawal the changes of the cortisol secretion rebounded. Nocturnal secretion of GH, testosterone, LH and FSH remained unaffected, but plasma prolactin levels increased under TR and returned to normalcy after cessation. Abstract An elucidation of the hysteresis phenomena in nitrogen sorption (NS) and mercury porosimetry (MP) on porous aggregates of non-porous silica spheres of particle diameter 90–1000 nm is presented. First, it is demonstrated that highly ordered and dense aggregates of a porosity of 26–30% are formed by gravity settling and centrifugation. The diethylether, ethylacetate and butanolic extracts from Thymus webbianus and Thymus leptophyllus were tested for spasmolytic activity. Pre-incubation of the isolated rat duodenum with these extracts for 10 min produced a concentration-dependent inhibition of acetylcholine-induced contractions. This effect was at least ten times greater with the apolar extracts than with the polar extracts.

This paper summarizes some previous or more recent experimental results on chemical interaction, at moderate temperatures, of H, H2, CO and CO2 with the surfaces of nickel oxide, mainly the NiO {001} surface. These results are in a general agreement with theoretical predictions. Nearly perfect surfaces of maximal valency oxides cannot react with molecules. Dissociation of molecules is often required for chemisorption. Concentrations of acids other than malic and lactic appeared to be related more to area of production than to grape variety. These variables (2- hydroxyglutaric, butyric and isovaleric acid concentrations) were attributed to differences in the technological process used for vinification in the various areas. Shikimic and galacturonic acids were helpful for classifying and discriminating wine varieties. A German Validation Study of the Inventory to Diagnose Depression

The Inventory to Diagnose Depression (IDD), a self-rating scale designed to identify major depressive episodes (MDE) according to DSM-III, was validated in a sample of 83 inpatients. Depending whether the time criterion of MDE was included or omitted, 63 or 77 patients obtained a syndrome diagnosis of MDE established by means of a structured clinical interview (Polydiagnostic Interview) which served as yardstick. Sensitivity (84.1% with time criterion, 89.6% without time criterion), specificity (60%, 50%), predictive value (67.8%, 64.2%) and kappa (0.43, 0.29) were calculated and found to necessitate improvement for a reasonable application of the IDD in epidemiological and clinical setting…
