Proof-of-Principle Direct Measurement of Particle Statistical Phase

2022

The symmetrization postulate in quantum mechanics is formally reflected in the appearance of an exchange phase governing the symmetry of identical-particle global states under particle swapping. Many indirect measurements of this fundamental phase have been reported thus far, but a direct observation has been achieved only recently for photons. Here, we propose a general scheme capable of directly measuring the exchange phase of any type of particle (bosons, fermions, or anyons), exploiting the operational framework of spatially localized operations and classical communication. We experimentally implement it on an all-optical platform, providing a proof of principle for different simulated …

PHOTOGRAMMETRY NOW AND THEN - FROM HAND-CRAFTED TO DEEP-LEARNING TIE POINTS

2022

Abstract. Historical images provide a valuable source of information exploited by several kinds of applications, such as the monitoring of cities and territories, the reconstruction of destroyed buildings, and are increasingly being shared for cultural promotion projects through virtual reality or augmented reality applications. Finding reliable and accurate matches between historical and present images is a fundamental step for such tasks since they require to co-register the present 3D scene with the past one. Classical image matching solutions are sensitive to strong radiometric variations within the images, which are particularly relevant in these multi-temporal contexts due to differen…

Anticancer Activity, Reduction Mechanism and G-Quadruplex DNA Binding of a Redox-Activated Platinum(IV)–Salphen Complex

2022

Aiming at reducing the unselective cytotoxicity of Pt(II) chemotherapeutics, a great deal of effort has been concentrated into the design of metal-containing drugs with different anticancer mechanisms of action. Inert Pt(IV) prodrugs have been proposed to be a valid alternative as they are activated by reduction directly into the cell releasing active Pt(II) species. On the other hand, a promising strategy for designing metallodrugs is to explore new potential biological targets rather than canonical B-DNA. G-quadruplex nucleic acid, obtained by self-assembly of guanine-rich nucleic acid sequences, has recently been considered an attractive target for anticancer drug design. Therefore, comp…

Information Integration, Coordination Failures, and Quality of Prescribing

2022

Poor information flows hamper coordination, potentially leading to suboptimal decisions in health care. We examine the effects of a large-scale policy of health information integration. We use the staggered adoption of a nationwide electronic prescribing system over four years in Finland and prescription-level administrative data. Our results show no discernible effect on the probability of co-prescribing harmful drugs on average, but the heterogeneity analysis reveals that this probability reduces in rural regions, by 35 percent. This substantial reduction is driven by interacting prescriptions from different physicians and generalists. Information integration can therefore improve the coo…

Light and Divine Wisdom: An Alternative Interpretation of the Iconography of the Fuller Brooch

2022

Correlation between Anthropometric and Ultrasound Measurement for Dry Needling of The Iliocostalis Lumborum Muscle with a Safety Protocol: A Cross-Se…

2022

Introduction: the management of musculoskeletal pain through the application of dry needling (DN) is effective. The application of this technique can carry very infrequent major risks on muscles, such as on the iliocostalis lumborum due to its proximity to the kidney and the peritoneum. It is important to establish a DN protocol based on the different anthropometric variables of the subjects. Main objective: the main objective of this study was to investigate the correlation between different anthropometric variables and the skin-kidney and skin-peritoneum distances to establish the size of the needle that could perform DN in the iliocostalis lumborum muscle without risk. Distribution of KIR Genes and Their HLA Ligands in Different Viral Infectious Diseases: Frequency Study in Sicilian Population

2022

Natural killer (NK) cells play a role in defence against viral infections by killing infected cells or by producing cytokines and interacting with adaptive immune cells. Killer immunoglobulin-like receptors (KIRs) regulate the activation of NK cells through their interaction with human leucocyte antigens (HLA). Ninety-six Sicilian patients positive to Human Immunodeficiency Virus-1 (HIV) and ninety-two Sicilian patients positive to SARS-CoV-2 were genotyped for KIRs and their HLA ligands. We also included fifty-six Sicilian patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) already recruited in our previous study. The aim of this study was to compare the distribution of KIR–HLA genes/groups of these t…

Mutations along human chromosomes: How randomly scattered are they?

2022

The diversity of mutations in human chromosomes is nowadays very well documented. The mutations characterize populations in the world as well as genetic causes of diseases. In the approach that we follow, we study the patterns of gaps between mutations by means of the rescaled range analysis and the fractal dimension estimates. The results for chromosomes 1 to 22 and X indicate the existence of the so-called Hurst phenomenon in all of them. The interpretation of this outcome entails the presence of long-range correlations and we propose an explanation based on the genomic feature dubbed linkage disequilibrium, a nonrandom association of alleles at different loci. An unexpected outcome is th…

Effects of exposure to a glyphosate-based herbicide on haematological parameters, plasma biochemical indices and the microstructure of selected organ…

2022

Contamination of water environments with herbicides is a common problem nowadays. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the effects of Roundup on common carp ( Cyprinus carpio) after 1, 3 and 10 days of exposure. The used concentrations corresponded to 1 and 5 mg/l of the active ingredient (glyphosate potassium salt). The haematological analysis performed showed a decrease of the RBC count, as well as an increase of the other erythrocyte indices (Hb, MCV, MCH, MCHC). Most of these changes were dependent on the concentration and time. An increase of the WBC count and the percentage of immature neutrophils occurred, thus indicating the presence of inflammation. Polarized radio emission unveils the structure of the pre-supernova circumstellar magnetic field and the radio emission in SN1987A

2022

The detected polarized radio emission from remnant of SN1987A opens the possibility to unveil the structure of the pre-supernova magnetic field in the circumstellar medium. Properties derived from direct measurements would be of importance for understanding the progenitor stars and their magnetic fields. As the first step to this goal, we adopted the hydrodynamic data from an elaborated three-dimensional (3-D) numerical model of SN1987A. We have developed an approximate method for `reconstruction' of 3-D magnetic field structure inside supernova remnant on the `hydrodynamic background'. This method uses the distribution of the magnetic field around the progenitor as the initial condition. W…
