Impact of nuclear mass measurements in the vicinity of 132Sn on the r-process nucleosynthesis

2022

Nuclear masses are a key aspect in the modelling of nuclear reaction rates for the r-process nucleosynthesis. High precision mass measurements drastically reduce the associated uncertainties in the modelling of r-process nucleosynthesis. We investigate the impact of nuclear mass uncertainties on neutron-capture rates calculations using a Hauser – Feshbach statistical code in the vicinity of 132Sn. Finally, we study the impact of the propagated neutron-capture reaction rates uncertainties on the r-process nucleosynthesis. We find that mass measurements with uncertainties higher than 20 keV affect the calculation of reaction rates. We also note that modelling of reaction rates can differ for …

Nuclear geometry at high energy from exclusive vector meson production

2022

We show that when saturation effects are included one obtains a good description of the exclusive $\mathrm{J}/\psi$ production spectra in ultra peripheral lead-lead collisions as recently measured by the ALICE Collaboration at the LHC. As exclusive spectra are sensitive to the spatial distribution of nuclear matter at small Bjorken-$x$, this implies that gluon saturation effects modify the impact parameter profile of the target as we move towards small $x$. In addition to saturation effects, we find a preference for larger nuclear strong-interaction radii compared to the typical charge radius. We demonstrate the role of finite photon transverse momentum and the interference between the case…

Il valore costituzionale della buona informazione

2022

Is there a constitutional right to good information? In the age of the internet and digital platforms, this question becomes more urgent and more pressing. In the debate in the Constituent Assembly already emerged the need for a control on sources of information, a requirement that, however, did not find a formulation expressed in Art. 21stof the Italian Costitution. It speaks only of a possible intervention of the legislator aimed at making known the «means of financing the periodic press». Nevertheless, the constitutional culture of contemporary democracies brings with it the idea of a reliance on the individual in the quality of the information he receives and thus raises the question of…

Network Threat Detection Using Machine/Deep Learning in SDN-Based Platforms: A Comprehensive Analysis of State-of-the-Art Solutions, Discussion, Chal…

2022

A revolution in network technology has been ushered in by software defined networking (SDN), which makes it possible to control the network from a central location and provides an overview of the network’s security. Despite this, SDN has a single point of failure that increases the risk of potential threats. Network intrusion detection systems (NIDS) prevent intrusions into a network and preserve the network’s integrity, availability, and confidentiality. Much work has been done on NIDS but there are still improvements needed in reducing false alarms and increasing threat detection accuracy. Recently advanced approaches such as deep learning (DL) and machine learning (ML) have been implemen…

A Neandertal dietary conundrum: Insights provided by tooth enamel Zn isotopes from Gabasa, Spain

2022

The characterization of Neandertals’ diets has mostly relied on nitrogen isotope analyses of bone and tooth collagen. However, few nitrogen isotope data have been recovered from bones or teeth from Iberia due to poor collagen preservation at Paleolithic sites in the region. Zinc isotopes have been shown to be a reliable method for reconstructing trophic levels in the absence of organic matter preservation. Here, we present the results of zinc (Zn), strontium (Sr), carbon (C), and oxygen (O) isotope and trace element ratio analysis measured in dental enamel on a Pleistocene food web in Gabasa, Spain, to characterize the diet and ecology of a Middle Paleolithic Neandertal individual. Based on…

Psychological Well-Being among Adolescents and Youth.

2022

Today, the construct of well‐being has assumed increasing importance in various areas of psychology by identifying several factors of personal order (personality dispositions, self‐esteem, perception of control), interpersonal (social support), and socioeconomic (income, level of education), variables that can influence well‐being to a greater or lesser extent. Research on the construct has been derived from two influential approaches or perspectives: the hedonic approach, which focuses on pleasure and happiness and on the achievement of well-being through the satisfaction of one’s desires, and the eudaimonic approach, according to which well-being is obtained by fulfilling one’s potential …

Visual Parameter Selection for Spatial Blind Source Separation.

2022

Analysis of spatial multivariate data, i.e., measurements at irregularly-spaced locations, is a challenging topic in visualization and statistics alike. Such data are inteGral to many domains, e.g., indicators of valuable minerals are measured for mine prospecting. Popular analysis methods, like PCA, often by design do not account for the spatial nature of the data. Thus they, together with their spatial variants, must be employed very carefully. Clearly, it is preferable to use methods that were specifically designed for such data, like spatial blind source separation (SBSS). However, SBSS requires two tuning parameters, which are themselves complex spatial objects. Setting these parameter…

Robust digital optimal control on IBM quantum computers

2022

The ability of pulse-shaping devices to generate accurately quantum optimal control is a strong limitation to the development of quantum technologies. We propose and demonstrate a systematic procedure to design robust digital control processes adapted to such experimental constraints. We show to what extent this digital pulse can be obtained from its continuous-time counterpart. A remarkable efficiency can be achieved even for a limited number of pulse parameters. We experimentally implement the protocols on IBM quantum computers for a single qubit, obtaining an optimal robust transfer in a time T = 382 ns.

Influence of indigenous Hanseniaspora uvarum and Saccharomyces cerevisiae from sugar-rich substrates on the aromatic composition of loquat beer

2022

The demand for unique and exclusive food products and beverages is constantly on the increase. One of the products that mostly evolved to encounter market dynamics in the last decade is craft beer. For a long time, craft breweries have included fruit in beer production to enrich flavour and aroma profile of different beer styles. In this study, for the first time, the use of Saccharomyces and non-Saccharomyces yeast strains isolated from high -sugar matrices (manna and fermented honey by-products) were investigated to diversify fruit craft beer pro-duction, in order to improve the fermentation process and highlight the complexity of aroma profiles generated during alcoholic fermentation. 2022

Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists mimic the action of the endogenous GLP-1 incretin hormone, improving glycaemic control in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) by increasing insulin secretion and decreasing glucagon secretion in a glucose-dependent manner. However, as cardiovascular (CV) morbidity and mortality is common in patients with T2DM, several trials with the use of GLP-1 receptor agonists (RAs) have been performed focusing on endpoints related to cardiovascular disease rather than metabolic control of T2DM. Following the positive cardiovascular effects of liraglutide, dulaglutide and semaglutide observed in these trials, major changes in T2DM management guidelines have …

Inhalable polymeric microparticles as pharmaceutical porous powder for drug administration

2022

In this work, the production of inhalable polymeric microparticles with modulable porosity is described. The starting polymeric material was the PHEA-g-RhB-g-PLA graft copolymer, which was suitably processed by spray drying (SD). Thanks to the addition of AB (weight percentage equal to 10 and 20 % with respect to the polymer) in the liquid feed, three biocompatible matrices were obtained with an increasing porosity in terms of pore volume (from 0.015 to 0.024 cc/g) and pore average diameter (from 1.942 to 3.060 nm), a decreasing tapped density values (from 0.75 to 0.50), and favorable aerosolization characteristics. These differences were high-lighted also by a significant increase in the r…

Sustainable rural development and rural energy communities in a post-Brexit UK

2022

Rural areas have become increasingly important for sustainable energy transition, mainly as a resource for the production of renewable energy. However, rural areas do not merely provide the land for harnessing renewable energy, such as wind energy, for the benefit of urban growth centres. In turn, both the rural economy and livelihood of rural communities are variously affected by an increased utilisation of renewable resources, too. This chapter will focus on the interrelationship between rural areas and the development of renewable energy in the UK. In doing so, it will first shed light on how the interplay between renewable energy and rural areas has been governed in the UK, with a parti…

Born to Score? The Relationship between Left-Handedness and Success from the 7-Meter Line

2022

An asymmetry in the prevalence of left-handedness vs. right-handedness in society has supposedly resulted in negative frequency-dependent advantages for left-handers in interactive sports. The aim of this study was to test whether these advantages apply to handball by examining whether being left-handed is beneficial when executing 7 m shots, a highly unimanual movement. All 1,625 7 m shots at the men’s 2016–2022 European championships were analyzed using a Bayesian two-level analysis. While the results did not indicate that left-handers were more likely to score from any single 7 m shot, left-handers were overrepresented among the designated shooters compared to both the population as a wh…

The effects of Borrelia infection on its wintering rodent host

2022

AbstractIn seasonal environments, appropriate adaptations are crucial for organisms to maximize their fitness. For instance, in many species, the immune function has been noticed to decrease during winter, which is assumed to be an adaptation to the season’s limited food availability. Consequences of an infection on the health and survival of the host organism could thus be more severe in winter than in summer. Here, we experimentally investigated the effect of a zoonotic, endemic pathogen, Borrelia afzelii infection on the survival and body condition in its host, the bank vole (Myodes glareolus), during late autumn–early winter under semi-natural field conditions in 11 large outdoor enclos…

Estimating crop coefficients and actual evapotranspiration in citrus orchards with sporadic cover weeds based on ground and remote sensing data

2022

AbstractAccurate estimations of actual crop evapotranspiration are of utmost importance to evaluate crop water requirements and to optimize water use efficiency. At this aim, coupling simple agro-hydrological models, such as the well-known FAO-56 model, with remote observations of the land surface could represent an easy-to-use tool to identify biophysical parameters of vegetation, such as the crop coefficient Kc under the actual field conditions and to estimate actual crop evapotranspiration. This paper intends, therefore, to propose an operational procedure to evaluate the spatio-temporal variability of Kc in a citrus orchard characterized by the sporadic presence of ground weeds, based o…

«Ich kann Nietzsche nicht böse sein, weil er mir meine Deutschen verdorben hat…». Thomas Mann lettore della Geburt der Tragödie

2022

The paper proposes an analysis of the reception of Nietzsche’s Die Geburt der Tragödie in Thomas Mann, with particular attention to the essay (1947) dedicated to the philosopher and to Doktor Faustus. The novel is read as an example of productive reception: Nietzsche’s categories of Apollonian and Dionysian, and even more so the idea of a rebirth of the great tragic art, become narrative cues that animate the entire story. The Doktor Faustus does not limit itself to parodying particular concepts of the Birth of Tragedy, but ends up presenting itself as a captivating ‘instruction manual’ for a correct reading of Nietzsche’s work.

Retrotransposon mapping in spider monkey genomes of the family Atelidae (Platyrrhini, Primates) shows a high level of LINE-1 amplification

2022

To investigate the distribution of LINE-1 repeat sequences, a LINE-1 probe was Fluorescence In Situ Hybridized (FISH) on the chromosomes of Ateles geoffroyi and Ateles fusciceps (Atelidae); a LINE-1 probe was also mapped on Cebuella pygmaea (Cebidae) and used as an outgroup for phylogenetic comparison. Ateles spider monkeys have a highly rearranged genome and are an ideal model for testing whether LINE-1 is involved in genome evolution. The LINE-1 probe has been mapped in the two Atelidae species for the first time, revealing a high accumulation of LINE-1 sequences along chromosomal arms, including telomeres, and a scarcity of LINE-1 signals at centromere positions. Exploring the cellular uptake of hectorite clay mineral and its drug carrier capabilities.

2022

In the last years, the use of clay minerals for pharmaceutical purposes has increased due to their interesting properties. Hectorite (Ht) is a clay belonging to the smectite group which has attracted attention for applications in biology, tissue engineering and as drug carrier and delivery system. However, the mechanisms involved in Ht cellular uptake and transport into cells, are still unclear. Herein, we used a labeled Ht (Ht/1Cl) to study both the cellular uptake, by confocal laser scanning microscopy, and internalization pathways involved in the cellular uptake, by various endocytosis-inhibiting studies and fluorescence microscopy. These studies highlighted that Ht can penetrate the cel…
