Tourism and territorial growth determinants in insular regions: A comparison with mainland regions for some European countries (2008–2019)

2022

The article investigates the different growth patterns of islands and mainland regions by looking at their tourism and territorial characteristics differences. We considered per capita income and employment growth patterns in a panel data model focused on 74 regions in seven European coun- tries from 2008 to 2019. The results show how the impor- tance of some growth factors, especially those related to tourism and environmental sustainability, varies between islands and mainland regions. The article suggests specific policy implications for island regions in line with the European Union guidelines. Our findings support the need to pursue different approaches to sustain growth in islands and…

New degrees of freedom for differential forms on cubical meshes

2022

We consider new degrees of freedom for higher order differential forms on cubical meshes. The approach is inspired by the idea of Rapetti and Bossavit to define higher order Whitney forms and their degrees of freedom using small simplices. We show that higher order differential forms on cubical meshes can be defined analogously using small cubes and prove that these small cubes yield unisolvent degrees of freedom. Significantly, this approach is compatible with discrete exterior calculus and expands the framework to cover higher order methods on cubical meshes, complementing the earlier strategy based on simplices.

Chromosome-scale assembly of the yellow mealworm genome

2022

Background: The yellow mealworm beetle, Tenebrio molitor, is a promising alternative protein source for animal and human nutrition and its farming involves relatively low environmental costs. For these reasons, its industrial scale production started this century. However, to optimize and breed sustainable new T. molitor lines, the access to its genome remains essential. Methods: By combining Oxford Nanopore and Illumina Hi-C data, we constructed a high-quality chromosome-scale assembly of T. molitor. Then, we combined RNA-seq data and available coleoptera proteomes for gene prediction with GMOVE. Results: We produced a high-quality genome with a N50 = 21.9Mb with a completeness of 99.5% an…

Geographical similarity and differences in the burden and genetic predisposition of NAFLD

2022

: NAFLD has become a major public health problem for more than 2 decades with a growing prevalence in parallel with the epidemic of obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2D). The disease burden of NAFLD differs across geographical regions and ethnicities. Variations in prevalence of metabolic diseases, extent of urban-rural divide, dietary habits, lifestyles, and the prevalence of NAFLD risk and protective alleles can contribute to such differences. The rise in NAFLD has led to a remarkable increase in the number of cases of cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma, hepatic decompensation, and liver-related mortality related to NAFLD. Moreover, NAFLD is associated with multiple extrahepatic manifestatio…

Peaceful Foreign Policy and Remembrance of War Effort : The Conceptualisation of Willingness to Defend in Finland and Its Connections to Previous Arm…

2022

In Finland, a conceptualization of willingness to defend has been a traditional part of the defence-related debates and the state has vested interests to maintain the high level of willingness. This paper examines the connections to the Second World War in political discourse related to willingness to defend. Based on the analysis of political and societal debates, I will demonstrate that the Second World War serves as an historical experience for the understanding of the concept by offering an idea of individual sacrifice relevant to the survival of the state, as a prime example. peerReviewed

Prototyping Sentinel-2 green LAI and brown LAI products for cropland monitoring.

2022

Abstract For agricultural applications, identification of non-photosynthetic above-ground vegetation is of great interest as it contributes to assess harvest practices, detecting crop residues or drought events, as well as to better predict the carbon, water and nutrients uptake. While the mapping of green Leaf Area Index (LAI) is well established, current operational retrieval models are not calibrated for LAI estimation over senescent, brown vegetation. This not only leads to an underestimation of LAI when crops are ripening, but is also a missed monitoring opportunity. The high spatial and temporal resolution of Sentinel-2 (S2) satellites constellation offers the possibility to estimate …

EVOO's Effects on Incretin Production: Is There a Rationale for a Combination in T2DM Therapy?

2022

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a serious public health concern as it is one of the most common chronic diseases worldwide due to social and economic developments that have led to unhealthy lifestyles, with a considerable impact both in terms of morbidity and mortality. The management of T2DM, before starting specific therapies, includes cornerstones such as healthy eating, regular exercise and weight loss. Strict adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) has been related to an inverse association with the risk of T2DM onset, as well as an improvement in glycaemic control; in particular, thanks to the consumption of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO). Neuroprotective and Antioxidant Role of Oxotremorine-M, a Non-selective Muscarinic Acetylcholine Receptors Agonist, in a Cellular Model of Alzheimer …

2022

AbstractAlzheimer disease (AD) is a multifactorial and age-dependent neurodegenerative disorder, whose pathogenesis, classically associated with the formation of senile plaques and neurofibrillary tangles, is also dependent on oxidative stress and neuroinflammation chronicization. Currently, the standard symptomatic therapy, based on acetylcholinesterase inhibitors, showed a limited therapeutic potential, whereas disease-modifying treatment strategies are still under extensive research. Previous studies have demonstrated that Oxotremorine-M (Oxo), a non-selective muscarinic acetylcholine receptors agonist, exerts neurotrophic functions in primary neurons, and modulates oxidative stress and …

Brain dynamics of recommendation-based social influence on preference change: A magnetoencephalography study.

2022

People change their preferences when exposed to others’ opinions. We examine the neural basis of how peer feedback influences an individual’s recommendation behavior. In addition, we investigate if the personality trait of ‘agreeableness’ modulates behavioral change and neural responses. In our experiment, participants with low and high agreeableness indicated their degree of recommendation of commercial brands, while subjected to peer group feedback. The associated neural responses were recorded with concurrent magnetoencephalography. After a delay, the participants were asked to reevaluate the brands. Recommendations changed consistently with conflicting feedback only when peer recommenda…

2022

Serrodiscus is considered one of the first trilobite genera showing global distribution during the Cambrian and a key component for the international correlation of this period. However, this genus encompasses many poorly documented species, ambiguous diagnoses or characters that depend on taphonomy and deformation based on one single specimen. Thus, in the present work, we carry out a systematic overview of the genus, evaluating the taphonomic and deformational variability of a large number of specimens from the same locality and horizon. In addition, and due to the difficulty of making synonymy decisions, closely related species are grouped into three different groups taking into consider…

Area‐Selective Atomic Layer Deposition on Functionalized Graphene Prepared by Reversible Laser Oxidation

2022

Publisher Copyright: © 2022 The Authors. Advanced Materials Interfaces published by Wiley-VCH GmbH. Area-selective atomic layer deposition (ALD) is a promising “bottom-up” alternative to current nanopatterning techniques. While it has been successfully implemented in traditional microelectronic processes, selective nucleation of ALD on 2D materials has so far remained an unsolved challenge. In this article, a precise control of the selective deposition of ZnO on graphene at low temperatures (<250 °C) is demonstrated. Maskless femtosecond laser writing is used to locally activate predefined surface areas (down to 300 nm) by functionalizing graphene to achieve excellent ALD selectivity (up to…

Stability Analysis in a Vietnam Small Island for the Deployment of a Nearshore Wave Power Plant

2022

The requirement for a more sustainable energy mix is promoting the spreading of technologies supplied by renewable sources. However, the introduction of unprogrammable energy sources in small electrical grids could jeopardize the stability of the entire system. In this context, the paper analyses a small island in Vietnam, assessing the effects due to the installation of a new power plant supplied by sea wave energy. While the installation of this technology could represent a great opportunity to reduce the local energy dependence, on the other side the quality of the supply could be worsened. Solutions are assessed to allow a good network service.

Legislative drafting and gender: some linguistic insights into English and Italian

2022

Languages vary widely in terms of gender systems showing differences in the number of classes, underlying assignment rules and how and where gender is marked. The legislative drafting policy conventionally known as the ‘masculine rule’, whereby ‘he includes she’, raised opposition in the 1970s (under the pressure of feminist movements in the United States and Europe), and the adoption of plain English style forced legislative drafters to basically avoid sentences of undue length, superfluous definitions, repeated words and gender specificity with the aim of achieving clarity, minimising ambiguity, and enhance gender-neutrality. Given the prevalence of English as lingua franca, an increasing…

Energy Management System in Grid-Connected Small Scale AC/DC Microgrids Including Renewable Sources and Flexible Loads

2022

The growth of small scale microgrids with diverse distributed generations has drawn attention to their effective energy management. In this paper, for various energy scenarios, an energy management system is adopted to minimize the energy purchased by a hybrid AC/DC microgrid from the upstream grid due to high peak-hour energy prices and maximise generation from renewable sources, while adjusting the most optimal charge/discharge control strategies for flexible loads such as electric vehicles and storage systems, and the supply of non-controllable loads. In addition, peak shaving is simultaneously implemented in this proposed model without considering minimum power deviation as an objective…

Speaking of politics in parliament : experiences of writing a book on the digitized Bundestag debates, 1949–2017

2022

This article consists of ex post methodological reflections on the procedures and practices that I applied in my monograph Politik als parlamentarischer Begriff: Perspektiven aus den Plenardebatten des Deutschen Bundestags (Leverkusen, 2021). The book analyses through 18 parliamentary terms the conceptualization of politics in German Bundestag plenary debates from 1949 to 2017. The book was an illustration of my long-term aim of combining political theorizing with the empirical analysis of debate. In writing the book, my guiding idea was to apply Ludwig Wittgenstein’s point, that the meaning of a concept lies in its use, to an analysis of how parliamentary debates open a perspective on the …
