Development of processes, qualification, and de-risking for the Ariel primary mirror

2022

The work carried out in the Ph.D. program focused on developing the optics design of the Atmospheric Remote-Sensing Infrared Exoplanet Large Survey (Ariel) telescope, an optical/infrared mission of the European Space Agency (ESA), whose primary mirror is an off-axis paraboloid mirror measuring 1.2 · 0.7m. The novelty of the telescope is that both the mirrors and the telescope structure will be made of aluminium, and the primary mirror will be made of bare aluminium without a thick hard coating. The choice is mainly due to the thermo-mechanical properties of the material, and the usage of the same material for the whole structure will allow better heat exchange between the mirror and the opt…

Heterogenizing palladium tetraiodide catalyst for carbonylation reactions

2022

We report the first example of successful heterogenization of the classical PdI42- carbonylation catalyst, achieved in two simple steps from ionic liquid-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The newly developed materials (PdI4@MWCNT-imi-X, X = Br, I) present the PdI42- anion supported on an imidazolium network (imi) grown on MWCNTs and have been fully characterized. The activity of PdI4@MWCNT-imi-X has been successfully tested in a paradigmatic carbonylation reaction, the oxidative monoaminocarbonylation of 1-alkynes with amines to give high value added 2-ynamides (obtained in good yields, 50–84%, starting from various substrates). The heterogeneous catalyst could be easil…

Simplified equivalent finite element modelling of concrete-filled steel tubular K-joints with and without studs

2022

Concrete Filled Steel Tubular (CFST) K-joints employed for truss structures gained high interest in the last years due to their widespread use in engineering practice. The overall performances of these joints can be efficiently improved by using steel studs welded in the inner surface of the steel chord filled with the concrete, avoiding punching shear failure, and improving the overall strength and ductility. However, a reliable prediction of the structural behavior of the joints is outmost of importance for the assessment of the capacity of new and existing structures, and there are no standardized design methods nowadays. In this paper, the structural performances of CFST K-joints with a…

Il travertino nella costruzione muraria ad Alcamo

2022

This study describes construction features typical of masonry buildings in the historic centre of Alcamo, Sicily. This local context is significant for the extent of the historic building stock and for the large use of travertine as traditional masonry material. The local availability of this rock is a peculiarity of Alcamo, in comparison with the rest of Sicily, and its use explains the originality of several construction details. The analysis exposed in this study is part of a wider research, aimed at developing a Sicilian database of mechanical and hygrothermal data for masonry tipologies. The historic tonewalls of Alcamo have been described by means of four masonry categories, whose mai…

Cigarette smoke promotes inflammasome‐independent activation of caspase‐1 and ‐4 leading to gasdermin D cleavage in human macrophages

2022

Mechanisms and consequences of gasdermin D (GSDMD) activation in cigarette smoke (CS)-associated inflammation and lung disease are unknown. GSDMD is a downstream effector of caspase-1, -8, and -4. Upon cleavage, GSDMD generates pores into cell membranes. Different degrees of GSDMD activation are associated with a range of physiological outputs ranging from cell hyperactivation to pyroptosis. We have previously reported that in human monocyte-derived macrophages CS extract (CSE) inhibits the NLRP3 inflammasome and shifts the response to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) towards the TLR4-TRIF axis leading to activation of caspase-8, which, in turn, activates caspase-1. In the present work, we investig…

Exploring the conceptual framework and measurement model of intrinsic capacity defined by the World Health Organization: A scoping review

2022

WHO has defined intrinsic capacity (IC) as the composite of all physical and mental capacities of an individual covering five subdomains: cognition, locomotion, sensory, vitality, and psychological. Despite this well accepted definition, the conceptual and measurement model of IC remains unclear, which hampers a standardized operationalization of the construct. We performed a scoping review to give a comprehensive overview of the extent to which the current literature of IC addresses and assumes the conceptual framework and measurement model of IC as reflective or formative. For inclusion, we considered all types of articles that were published in peer-reviewed journals except for protocol …

2022

Ancient dental calculus preserves signatures of biofilm succession and interindividual variation independent of dental pathology

2022

AbstractDental calculus preserves oral microbes, enabling comparative studies of the oral microbiome and health through time. However, small sample sizes and limited dental health metadata have hindered health-focused investigations to date. Here we investigate the relationship between tobacco pipe smoking and dental calculus microbiomes. Dental calculus from 75 individuals from the 19th century Middenbeemster skeletal collection (Netherlands) were analyzed by metagenomics. Demographic and dental health parameters were systematically recorded, including the presence/number of pipe notches. Comparative data sets from European populations before and after the introduction of tobacco were also…

THE SCHOOL AT THE SERVICE OF THE SOCIETY: CONSEQUENCES FOR THE "NEW WORLD"

2022

Introduction In this article I shall seek to demonstrate the remarkable contemporary relevance of John Dewey’s pedagogic ideas, found in publications such as My Pedagogic Creed, The School and Society and Democracy and Education. Through a brief analysis of these works I will highlight how much Dewey believed in a school that is connected to society and which places itself at its service, contributing to the birth or consolidation of a democracy understood not just as a form of government, but as a way of life. In view of this analysis and in light of the present pandemic caused by COVID-19, I will consider the importance today of the school. Following Dewey, I will take into account the ro…

TRA ACQUA E TERRA, TRA CULTURA ALTA E RACCONTO POPOLARE: I NOMI DELLA TRILOGIA DELLE METAMORFOSI DI ANDREA CAMILLERI

2022

Donne-sirene…

Printable Thermo- and Photo-stable Poly(D,L-lactide)/Carbon Nanodots Nanocomposites via Heterophase Melt-Extrusion Transesterification

2022

We propose for the first time an one-pot synthesis of carbon nanodots-poly(D,L-lactide) (CDs-PLA) nanocomposites, obtained by a simple reactive melt-extrusion process involving polar surface groups of multicolor CDs and ester bonds of PLA chains. Apart from providing an excellent method to produce polyester-coated CDs, our protocol allows obtaining perfect PLA@CDs blends giving rise to homogeneous extruded PLA@CDs filaments (ePLA@CDs) suitable for 3D printing applications (e.g., additive manufacturing for biomaterials and biodegradable encoded polymer ink technology). We demonstrate that ePLA@CDs filaments can be used to build a huge range of fluorescent objects with increasing architectura…

The predictive power of power-laws: An empirical time-arrow based investigation

2022

The efficient market hypothesis forbids any predictability towards future, but there is no such restriction in the case of reversed-looking approaches. We analyze if this asymmetry in non-predictability is reflected in the statistical features of financial time series. Our study is based on the analysis of the length-distribution of periods with high variability, and introduces time-asymmetric modifications of the method which are capable of revealing differences of the time series in forward and reversed time. We show that the future and reversed-looking time-series possess very similar properties, with some features being distinguishable with our method. Our findings give also evidence of…

Generalized power-angle control for grid-forming converters: A structural analysis

2022

Several control schemes have been recently proposed and studied as grid-forming controls for power converters. In all these schemes, the power-angle control loop is the part which defines the fundamental capabilities of the grid-forming control: that control loop governs in fact the inherent synchronization mechanism of the power converter, the power sharing with the other generation sources in the system and the oscillatory characteristics of the converter-based resource. This article introduces a general formulation for the power-angle control characterizing the grid-forming concept for power converters. The generalized power-angle control is based on a polynomial fraction formulation, an…

Novel green bio-composite geopolymeric thermo-plasters for innovative building applications: upcycling spent coffee ground

2022

This study proposes the reuse of spent coffee ground and biomass fly ash in the development of green geopolymeric thermo-plastering for innovative building applications. The former waste is the major residue of the brewing process, that is usually used as fertilisers or disposed of in landfill with extreme harmfulness for the natural environment. The latter is an industrial waste generated during the Kraft paper-pulp process, that is usually landfilled. The mortar is produced with a combination of metakaolin (30 wt.%) and biomass fly ash (70 wt.%), and natural siliceous sand filled with spent coffee ground (up to 17.5 wt.%).

2022

All legal systems by now must confront the issue of environmental protection. The scope of this paper is to analyse the Ecuadorian approach, considering that it is the only legal system which, so far, has constitutionalized the rights of Nature, thus allowing a change in the status of Nature, from object to subject of law, overcoming the traditional approach of Western environmental law. The paper also aims to show how the theme of the rights of Nature offers a valuable opportunity for intercultural dialogue, and how the Ecuadorian experience represents, in this sense, a perfect mix between Western legal notions, such as damage, protection, or representation, and the ancestral knowledge of …

Author's accepted manuscript Abstract—This article presents new analytical expressions for the temperature coefficients of the voltage, current, and power of a solar cell at its maximum power point MPP). A new analytical expression of the temperature coefficient of the fill factor is also derived. The new expressions are written as functions of photovoltaic (PV) metrics that can be obtained from i-V measurements. Nonideal diode behavior is partially accounted for through a temperature dependent ideality factor. The recombination parameter γ, which has been shown to account for the thermal sensitivity of all mechanisms determining the open-circuit voltage, appears to play a role also for the…

A simple method for the photometric characterization of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) is reported. It is based on the indirect measurement of the total emitted optical power by using a calibrated photodiode and the optical emission spectrum and space emission diagram of the OLED. From this and by measuring the current–voltage characteristic of the OLED all the relevant radiometric and photometric quantities can be extracted, including the external quantum efficiency. The usual method to collect all photons emitted by a LED source in the half space uses an integrating sphere with the LED source placed at the entrance hole and a photodiode (PD) placed at an exit hole at some point on …

2022

The Ibero-American independences have provoked important historiographi- cal debates that have shown the impor- tance of the revolutionary transforma- tions that took place between the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century. The idea is to show that, in the 1820s, the revolutionary ele- ments of nineteenth-century liberalism that formed the independent republics were implemented in almost all the Ibe- ro-American territories. Thus, I am based on the concept of revolution to de- fine the processes of independence in Ibero-America, highlighting that this oc- curred from the assumptions of liberal- ism. Concentrated bitterns discharged from saltworks have extremely high salinity, often up to 300 g/L, thus their direct disposal not only can have harmful effect on the environment, but also generates a depletion of a potential resource of renewable energy. Here, reverse electrodialysis (RED), an emerging electrochemical membrane process, is introduced to capture the salinity gradient power (SGP) intrinsically conveyed by these bitterns also aiming at the reduction of concentrated salty water disposal. A RED unit at the laboratory scale has been adopted to study the SGP potential with different ion exchange membrane and different operating conditions. In particular, membranes supplied by Fujif…

The paper aims to investigate the possibilities for the concept of “political author” as an effect of discourse to survive in contemporary cinema by analysing the case of Italian biopics of the new Millennium. After a proposal of definition of a political authoriality, the analyses of the films attempt to show how the articula- tion of such an authoriality in three different figures – the director, the actor, and the real model – and in subcategories defines a specific feature of biographical cinema, to eventually conclude with some remarks about the posthumous life of the authorial discourse after the “death of the author”, between politics and commitment.
