Exploring the mediator role of self-critical rumination between emotion regulation and psychopathology: A validation study of the Self-Critical Rumin…

2021

Abstract Self-critical rumination is a negative and repetitive self-thinking process related to different disorders and negative psychological outcomes such as emotion dysregulation. The objectives of this study are twofold: (a) to examine the factor structure of the Spanish version of the Self-Critical Rumination Scale (SCRS), providing further evidence on its construct validity, and (b), to explore the mediator role of self-critical rumination between emotion dysregulation and psychopathology. A sample of 431 Spanish participants were recruited and completed online questionnaires. Confirmatory factor analysis, mediation analysis, and Pearson's correlations were conducted. A single factor …

Testing a theoretically-based overland flow resistance law by Emmett’s database

2021

Abstract The main aim of this paper was to test a recently theoretically deduced flow resistance equation, based on a power-velocity profile, using a wide database of available measurements carried out in laboratory and field experimental runs with overland flow under simulated rainfall. In comparison with previous calibrations and validations of this theoretically deduced flow resistance equation, the used database by Emmett is characterized by a wide range of rainfall intensities (from 79.2 to 303.5 mm h−1 for laboratory runs and from 178.3 to 215.9 mm h−1 for field investigations) and bed slopes (from 0.33 to 17% for laboratory runs and from 2.9 to 33.2% for field investigations). For th…

Homogeneous and inhomogeneous broadening in single perovskite nanocrystals investigated by micro-photoluminescence

2021

Abstract Metal halides with perovskite crystalline structure have given rise to efficient optoelectronic and photonic devices. In the present work, we have studied the light emission properties of single CsPbBr3 and CsPbI3 semiconductor perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs), as the basis for a statistical analysis of micro-photoluminescence (micro-PL) spectra measured on tens of them. At room temperature, the linewidth extracted from PL spectra acquired in dense films of these nanocrystals is not very different from that of micro-PL measured in single nanocrystals. This means that the homogeneous linewidth due to exciton-phonon interaction is comparable or larger than the inhomogeneous effect asso…

Ideal cardiovascular health at age 5–6 years and cardiometabolic outcomes in preadolescence

2021

AbstractBackgroundThe American Heart Association (AHA) developed a definition of ideal cardiovascular health (ICH) based on the presence of both ideal health behaviours (diet, physical activity, weight status and smoking) and ideal health factors (glucose, total cholesterol and blood pressure levels). However, research of ICH in the paediatric population is scarce. We aimed to study ICH at age 5–6 years by extending the original ICH score with the health behaviours: sleep duration, screen time and prenatal smoke exposure, and to evaluate its association with cardiometabolic outcomes at age 11–12.MethodsA total of 1666 children aged 5–6 years were selected from the database of the ABCD-study…

Biological activity and toxicity of plant nutraceuticals: an overview

2021

Plant nutraceuticals have currently been receiving international attention due to their potentially health-promoting effects when consumed as part of a varied diet, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-proliferative properties. These beneficial effects have been attributed to the presence of bioactive compounds naturally occurring in food or produced de novo through metabolic pathways. However, taken into account that nutraceuticals could be concentrated forms of the food or plants, it is probable to find undesirable substances utilized in crop protection, such as pesticides, and other contaminants (e.g. mycotoxins), which could be concentrated during the extraction process. H…

Epigenomic landscape of human colorectal cancer unveils an aberrant core of pan-cancer enhancers orchestrated by YAP/TAZ

2021

Cancer is characterized by pervasive epigenetic alterations with enhancer dysfunction orchestrating the aberrant cancer transcriptional programs and transcriptional dependencies. Here, we epigenetically characterize human colorectal cancer (CRC) using de novo chromatin state discovery on a library of different patient-derived organoids. By exploring this resource, we unveil a tumor-specific deregulated enhancerome that is cancer cell-intrinsic and independent of interpatient heterogeneity. We show that the transcriptional coactivators YAP/TAZ act as key regulators of the conserved CRC gained enhancers. The same YAP/TAZ-bound enhancers display active chromatin profiles across diverse human t…

Fasting does not guarantee empty stomach in the intensive care unit: A prospective ultrasonographic evaluation (The NUTRIGUS study).

2021

BACKGROUND In the intensive care unit (ICU), a fasting period is usually respected to avoid gastric aspiration during airway management procedures. Since there are no recognised guidelines, intensive care physicians balance the aspiration risk with the negative consequences of underfeeding. Our objective was to determine the impact of fasting on gastric emptying in critically ill patients by using gastric ultrasound. MATERIAL AND METHODS Among the 112 patients that met the inclusion criteria, 100 patients were analysed. Gastric ultrasonography was performed immediately before extubation. Patients with either 1/ an absence of visualised gastric content (qualitative evaluation) or 2/ a gastri…

Estimating the thermal photon production rate using lattice QCD

2021

We present results for the photon emission rate determined from the transverse channel vector correlator at fixed spatial momentum using two flavors of dynamical Wilson fermions at $T\sim$250 MeV. We estimate the transverse channel spectral function using the continuum extrapolated correlator by applying various fit ans\"atze with a smooth matching to the NLO perturbative result. We confront our estimate based on this channel with the latest results of our collaboration based on the difference of the transverse and longitudinal channels.

Abstract We propose a signal deconvolution procedure for imaging spectrometer data, where a measured point spread function (PSF) is deconvolved itself before being used for deconvolution of the signal. We evaluate the effectiveness of our procedure for improvement of the spatio-spectral signal, as well as our target application, i.e. estimation of sun-induced fluorescence (SIF). Imaging spectrometers are well established instruments for remote sensing. When used for scientific purposes these instruments are usually calibrated on a regular basis. In our case the point spread function of the optics is measured in an elaborate procedure with a tunable monochromator point light source. PSFs are…

Nonlinear refraction and absorption of spectrally tuneable picosecond pulses in carbon disulfide

2021

Abstract We analyze the spectral dependence of the nonlinear refractive index and nonlinear absorption coefficient of carbon disulfide (CS2) in the spectral range of 400–1100 nm using picosecond laser pulses. An increase of the nonlinear refractive index of CS2 at the shorter wavelength region compared with the near infrared region (9 × 10−14 cm2 W−1 (λ = 700 nm) and 4 × 10−14 cm2 W−1 (λ = 1000 nm), respectively) follows by a decrease of this parameter at the wavelengths below 600 nm. We compare the spectral dependences of the lower- and higher-order nonlinear absorption coefficients in carbon disulfide. The three-photon absorption coefficient was found to be maximal at λ = 1000 nm (β3PA = …

Street Names through Sociological Lenses. Part II: Constructionism and Utilitarianism

2021

Abstract As toponymic means of inscribing urban space, street names have been addressed mainly by human geographers, who have articulated the field of critical place-name studies. In this paper, I continue the endeavor started in the previous issue published in Social Change Review of reading street names through sociological lenses. Whereas in the first part of this two-part contribution the analysis was made from functionalist and conflictualist perspectives, this second and final part employs social constructionism and the utilitarian theoretical tradition in making sociological sense of street nomenclatures. First, conceiving of street names as forming discursively constructed linguisti…

Abstract The subject of the previous contribution is the analysis of the financial statements of Sicilian large" wineries bottlers, with particular reference to 2020. The conditions of resistance to the pandemic phenomenon still underway were examined, the strategies implemented to counteract the reduction in turnover and the economic results from the twenty-three companies examined. In general, the companies have shown good sealing ability, despite a generalized loss in turnover of around 20%, in a positive recovery currently underway in 2021.

Neurogranin as a Reliable Biomarker for Synaptic Dysfunction in Alzheimer’s Disease

2021

(1) Background: Neurogranin is a post-synaptic protein expressed in the neurons of the hippocampus and cerebral cortex. It has been recently proposed as a promising biomarker of synaptic dysfunction, especially in Alzheimer’s disease (AD). However, more efforts are needed before introducing it in clinical practice, including the definition of its reference interval (RI). The aim of the study was to establish the RI of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) neurogranin levels in controls and individuals with non-neurodegenerative neurological diseases; (2) We included a total of 136 individuals that were sub-grouped as follows: AD patients (n = 33), patients with non-neurodegenerative neurological …

Seed germination reports for Sicilian endemic taxa of the genus Helichrysum (Asteraceae)

2021

In the present study, successful germination protocols for 11 different taxa of the genus Helichrysum native to Sicily are discussed. Eight of them are representative of strict endemic Sicilian taxa, 2 are Italian sub endemic and one, namely H. stoechas, is a widespread W Mediterranean species. Given the controversial taxonomic status and relationships of the Mediterranean Helichrysum, the taxonomic approach enhancing the existing diversity of Sicilian populations was herein adopted from current literature. First germination records are given for some of the investigated taxa.

Redox Systems, Oxidative Stress, and Antioxidant Defences in Health and Disease

2021

Reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) play a key role in the regulation of cell survival. While adequate levels of RONS are essential to sustain cell proliferation and survival, disruption of the endocellular redox state induces cell dysfunction and death. Indeed, under physiological conditions, a balance between the generation and elimination of RONS ensures the proper function of redox-sensitive signalling proteins. Conversely, alterations to the redox homeostasis may disrupt the function of key transcription factors, signaltransduction pathways and cell-death regulators. Along these lines, understanding the mechanisms underlying cellular redox homeostasis may help to develop nutrac…
