Cetacean presence and distribution in the central Mediterranean Sea and potential risks deriving from plastic pollution
2021
Abstract The Sardinian and Sicilian Channels are considered hotspots of biodiversity and key ecological passages between Mediterranean sub-basins, but with significant knowledge gaps about marine mammal presence and potential threats they face. Using data collected between 2013 and 2019 along fixed transects, inter and intra-annual cetacean index of abundance was assessed. Habitat suitability, seasonal hot spots, and risk exposure for plastic were performed using the Kernel analysis and the Biomod2 R-package. 661 sightings of 8 cetacean species were recorded, with bottlenose and striped dolphins as the most sighted species. The north-eastern pelagic sector, the coastal waters and areas near…
Hulot's Selinunte: digital analysis and virtual reconstruction
2021
Some drawings feature a powerful evocative nature, capable of presenting a truthful vision that can replace, in collective imagination, the actual expression of reality. This is the case of the "restorations" of Selinunte proposed by the French architect Jean-Louis Hulot (Paris 1871 -1959) which still today evoke the splendours of the ancient city. Thanks to his accurate surveys and inspired by the visit to the remains of further ancient cities such as Priene, Tera, Delos, and Pompeii, Hulot proposed in his watercolour drawings a vision of a "living" city, rendered at the height of its architectural and social magnificence. The paper presents a study on digital solutions that combine data f…
Network design for surface water quality monitoring in a road construction project using Gamma Test theory
2021
Road construction has a negative environmental impact on the surrounding aquatic environment, requiring the continuous monitoring of surface water quality. Here, optimization of the water quality monitoring network (WQMN) is an essential step in supporting the sustainable development of road construction projects. This study introduces Gamma Test theory (GTT) as a practical method for optimizing the WQMN of surface waters during road construction. The water quality index (WQI) was computed in 48 monitoring stations for six monitoring periods from 2017 to 2019; data was acquired from a primary monitoring network over a new highway in southern Norway. Based on the results, it is possible to r…
Cyber-Physical Systems for Smart Water Networks: A Review
2021
Author's accepted manuscript. There is a growing demand to equip Smart Water Networks (SWN) with advanced sensing and computation capabilities in order to detect anomalies and apply autonomous event-triggered control. Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs) have emerged as an important research area capable of intelligently sensing the state of SWN and reacting autonomously in scenarios of unexpected crisis development. Through computational algorithms, CPSs can integrate physical components of SWN, such as sensors and actuators, and provide technological frameworks for data analytics, pertinent decision making, and control. The development of CPSs in SWN requires the collaboration of diverse scienti…
This paper outlines the conception of the teaching of rhetoric at the Brussels School. It explains the origin of the approach in the thought of Perelman. It then shows how the GRAL team recovered the teaching of rhetorical exercises by …
Beyond the screen
2021
Our didactic experiences in the field of architectural design, in courses that have always had a strong workshop character, have been varied in recent years and have been carried out in different variants that, when considered as a whole, allow us to reflect on the problems and the challenges faced during the pandemic. Indeed, a didactic normally conducted with compulsory attendance suffered in a sudden and unexpected way from the cancellation of physical presence, the loss of contact with people and the “corporeality” of the project. Moreover, the absence of the physical space of the classroom (a scene inherent to the laboratory) soon led to the search for new tools and appropriate methods…

2021
IntroductionGood nutrition is the foundation of sustainable growth and development among children. The United Nations aims to achieve food security and improve nutrition through its Sustainable Development Goal 2 - Zero Hunger. In close collaboration with local communities and authorities, the Tanga International Competence Centre, Tanzania, supports projects aimed at achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. One of their initiatives, The Banana Project, which is a free school fruit scheme, started in 2011 based on a recognised need for nutritional support among preschool children at a rural school in Tanga District. In the interest of improving nutrition, the free school …
Tree species flammability based on plant traits: A synthesis.
2021
Abstract The occurrence of large and recurring forest fires has long been associated with fire-prone environments, but this perception has been shifted rapidly in recent decades as Earths' landscapes have become increasingly threatened by severe and unpredictable fires as a result of climate changes. In this regard, the flammability of trees is a topic of great interest for ecology, management, and the development of sustainable restoration and rehabilitation plans. Tree species differ in regard to flammability, and many plant functional traits contribute to flammability at species, community and vegetation level. The relationship between plant traits and flammability at species level is im…
2021
Anton Chekhov is one of the most emblematic figures in the history of theatre. His plays were among the most frequently performed plays during the Twentieth century. The reception of his plays has forged a theatrical genotype that would have led to misunderstandings or altered his assimilation in an instrumental way. But it is in the very nature of the theatre to provoke, disorient, wink, mock, etc., in order to increase the audience’s attention. The lines of Trofimov from The Cherry Orchard have engraved an indelible mark in the audiences of an entire century and beyond, like a boiling lava. Through the analysis of different productions of Chekhov’s plays on various stages, the essay highl…

Street Names through Sociological Lenses. Part II: Constructionism and Utilitarianism
2021
Abstract As toponymic means of inscribing urban space, street names have been addressed mainly by human geographers, who have articulated the field of critical place-name studies. In this paper, I continue the endeavor started in the previous issue published in Social Change Review of reading street names through sociological lenses. Whereas in the first part of this two-part contribution the analysis was made from functionalist and conflictualist perspectives, this second and final part employs social constructionism and the utilitarian theoretical tradition in making sociological sense of street nomenclatures. First, conceiving of street names as forming discursively constructed linguisti…
Gaussianizing the Earth: Multidimensional Information Measures for Earth Data Analysis
2021
Information theory is an excellent framework for analyzing Earth system data because it allows us to characterize uncertainty and redundancy, and is universally interpretable. However, accurately estimating information content is challenging because spatio-temporal data is high-dimensional, heterogeneous and has non-linear characteristics. In this paper, we apply multivariate Gaussianization for probability density estimation which is robust to dimensionality, comes with statistical guarantees, and is easy to apply. In addition, this methodology allows us to estimate information-theoretic measures to characterize multivariate densities: information, entropy, total correlation, and mutual in…
A RARE CASE OF PERFORATED ILEAL DIVERTICULITIS IN A YOUNG MAN: A CASE REPORT AND LITERATURE REVIEW
2021
Jejunoileal diverticulosis is a rare, often asymptomatic condition, consisting of acquired false diverticula. Diagnosis of ileal perforation is usually made incidentally or after complications, including obstruction, haemorrhage, and diverticulitis. A previously healthy 17-year-old man presented to the Emergency Department with diffuse abdominal pain and fever. CT scan showed air-fluid level in the RLQ and free intraperitoneal air and fluid. The patient underwent an urgent exploratory laparotomy with an intestinal resection and primary anastomosis. We report a rare case of ileal perforation, due to diverticular disease in a healthy young man, treated with an urgent surgery. Such an event re…
IMPACT OF SHORTENED DENTAL ARCH ON ORAL HEALTH-RELATED QUALITY OF LIFE.
2021
Abstract Background A shortened dental arch (SDA) is an established treatment concept for patients with missing molars. However, little is known regarding long-term course of oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in patients with SDA and the benefits from replacement of missing molars. Aim Purpose of this multi-center randomized clinical trial was to assess OHRQoL over a period of 15 years in patients with molar replacement by a removable partial denture (RPD) compared to patients with a restored SDA without molar replacement. Design Patients at least 35 years of age with all molars missing in one jaw and at least the canine and one premolar present on each side were included. Patien…
Risk committee complexity and liquidity risk in the European banking industry
2021
Abstract The present study aims to investigate how bank governance characteristics are related to liquidity risk by analysing board composition, gender, and the risk committee. A dynamic panel data model is employed on a sample of European banks during the period after the financial crisis (from 2011 to 2017). Furthermore, we collect information about the profiles of the directors on the boards of banks, thereby creating five categories of risk committee members. To address the endogeneity issue, a generalised method of moments two-step estimator is implemented. The findings highlight that the fundamental role of the risk committee adequately shields banks against general liquidity risks. M…
Impact of rapid maxillary expansion on mouth-breathing children and adolescents : a systematic review
2021
Background Rapid maxillary expansion (RME) is an orthodontic procedure used to correct transverse maxillary deficiency. Due to the anatomical relationship between the palate and the nasal cavity, RME promotes an increase in nasal dimensions, which should hypothetically improve nasal respiratory function. Objective: This review aimed to systematically verify studies that assessed the effects of RME on nasal patency in mouth-breathing children and adolescents. Material and Methods An electronic search was performed in the MEDLINE databases via OVID, Scopus and EMBASE. The terms were: “children and adolescents”, “rapid maxillary expansion” and “mouth breathing”. The search was conducted in Oct…
Performance-based characterization of recycled polymer modified asphalt mixture
2021
Due to the introduction of secondary materials, the asphalt mixtures to be designed and tested in our laboratories are constantly becoming much more complex than traditional asphalt mixtures making difficult to use conventional laboratory procedure and/or predict expected results. This study proposes a comprehensive characterization of asphalt mixture modified with recycled polymer compound by using both wet and dry process proposing adjustments to laboratory mixing and sample compaction procedure. Accordingly, three AC20 Hot Asphalt Mixture (HMA) were designed and their conventional and performance related properties were assessed by looking at a) Indirect Tensile test (ITS) a) moisture da…

The title compound, poly[triaquabis[μ4-N,N′-(1,3,5-oxadiazinane-3,5-diyl)bis(carbamoylmethanoato)]dinickel(II)tetrapotassium], [K4Ni2(C7H6N4O7)2(H2O)3] n , is a second solvatomorph of poly[(μ4-N,N′-(1,3,5-oxadiazinane-3,5-diyl)bis(carbamoylmethanoato)nickel(II)dipotassium] reported previously [Plutenko et al. (2021). Acta Cryst. E77, 298–304]. The asymmetric unit of the title compound includes two structurally independent complex anions [Ni(C7H6N4O7)]2−, which exhibit an L-shaped geometry and consist of two almost flat fragments perpendicular to one another: the 1,3,5-oxadiazinane fragment and the fragment including other atoms of the anion. The central Ni atom is in a square-planar N2O2 co…
Integration of large-area optical imagers for biometric recognition and touch in displays
2021
In recent years there has been an increasing interest to integrate optical sensing in mobile displays, for instance, for biometric fingerprint scanning functionality. There are several routes to incorporate optical fingerprint functionality within the full display area, each with their own benefits and challenges. Here we investigate the different integration routes using large-area, ultra-thin imagers based on organic photodiodes.

Influence of Regular Rhythmic Versus Textural Sound Sequences on Semantic and Conceptual Processing
2021
Conceptual priming studies have shown that listening to musical primes triggers semantic activation. The present study further investigated with a free semantic evocation task, 1) how rhythmic vs. textural structures affect the amount of words evoked after a musical sequence, and 2) whether both features also affect the content of the semantic activation. Rhythmic sequences were composed of various percussion sounds with a strong underlying beat and metrical structure. Textural sound sequences consisted of blended timbres and sound sources evolving over time without identifiable pulse. Participants were asked to verbalize the concepts evoked by the musical sequences. We measured the number …
Nilpotence of orbits under monodromy and the length of Melnikov functions
2021
Abstract Let F ∈ ℂ [ x , y ] be a polynomial, γ ( z ) ∈ π 1 ( F − 1 ( z ) ) a non-trivial cycle in a generic fiber of F and let ω be a polynomial 1-form, thus defining a polynomial deformation d F + e ω = 0 of the integrable foliation given by F . We study different invariants: the orbit depth k , the nilpotence class n , the derivative length d associated with the couple ( F , γ ) . These invariants bind the length l of the first nonzero Melnikov function of the deformation d F + e ω along γ . We analyze the variation of the aforementioned invariants in a simple but informative example, in which the polynomial F is defined by a product of four lines. We study as well the relation of this b…
Interassay and interobserver comparability study of four programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) immunohistochemistry assays in triple-negative breast canc…
2021
Different immunohistochemical programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) assays and scorings have been reported to yield variable results in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). We compared the analytical concordance and reproducibility of four clinically relevant PD-L1 assays assessing immune cell (IC) score, tumor proportion score (TPS), and combined positive score (CPS) in TNBC. Primary TNBC resection specimens (n = 104) were stained for PD-L1 using VENTANA SP142, VENTANA SP263, DAKO 22C3, and DAKO 28–8. PD-L1 expression was scored according to guidelines on virtual whole slide images by four trained readers. The mean PD-L1 positivity at IC-score ≥1% and CPS ≥1 ranged between 53% and 75% with th…
Dioniso a Centuripe: iconografia ‘teatrale’ e imagerie dionisiaca in contesto funerario
2021
The purpose of the paper is to bring together and to assess some strands of the funerary imagery elaborated in Centuripe (Sicily) in 3rd-1st centuries B.C., that until recently have been viewed in total isolation from each other. Dionysian themes and motifs have been variously identified in the local polychrome pottery, since the discovery, early in 20th century, of two impressive vases representing Dionysos himself in a relaxed pose; as opposed to the prevailing “bacchic-orphic” explanation, however, from the second half of past century the nuptial theme was considered to be the most important of the Centuripan vase inventory; finally, some scholars have argued that the repertory was not s…
Effectiveness of a digital dietary intervention program targeting young adults before parenthood: protocol for the PREPARED randomised controlled tri…
2021
IntroductionThe importance of preconception health for lifelong physical and mental health in the next generation has gained increasing recognition in recent years. Preconception paternal and maternal risk factors such as obesity and inadequate diet affect the metabolic and cardiovascular health of their offspring later in life. This highlights the importance of diet and dietary behaviour in the years before parenthood. In our project, PREPARED, we will evaluate the effectiveness of a digital intervention targeting young adults. Our primary aim is to improve participants’ preconception diet, and our secondary aim is to improve preconception quality of life and maternal and child perinatal o…
2021
Heristics and rhetoric can therefore constitute a dangerous drift of the dialogical method; and despite some apparent similarities between the dialectical and the eristic method, what will always differentiate the philosopher from the erist is a radically different ethical horizon. If the philosopher is genuinely a friend of knowledge, wisdom and justice, and therefore every action of his is aimed at good, it will not be too difficult a task, as instead believes Deleuze, to think that his talks always transform the dispute into new acquisitions for knowledge
Allusioni plautine ne «Gli ultimi giorni di Pompei» di Edward Bulwer-Lytton
2021
This note presents the summary and the analysis of citations, allusions and references to Plautus’s comedies in «The Last Days of Pompeii» by Edward Bulwer-Lytton. From the analysis here conducted it emerges that the English writer used Plautus for precise purposes, for ironic and satirical resolutions, appropriately contextualizing the allusions to Plautus within the plot of the novel.
Seamless downscaling of the ESA CCI soil moisture data at the daily scale with MODIS land products
2021
Abstract Spatial downscaling has recently become a crucial process in the regional application of coarse-resolution passive microwave surface soil moisture (SSM) products. Extensive gaps in auxiliary optical/thermal infrared observation data (mainly caused by cloud cover) and gaps in coarse-resolution passive microwave SSM data lead to spatiotemporal discontinuity in downscaled SSM maps, thereby limiting their applications. An improved downscaling method for the 25-km European Space Agency (ESA) Climate Change Initiative (CCI) SSM product was proposed to obtain daily seamless downscaled SSM series at a 1-km scale. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Terra daily land su…
XVIII e…
Come resistere alla narrazione e deformare il romanzo di formazione: The Hard Life di Flann O’Brien
2021
Peculiar formulation that mimics the expectations of self-cultivation and subverts its narrative modes, The Hard Life, Flann O'Brien's fourth novel, is again, very much like his prose, difficult to be categorized. Generally and simplistically defined as an-all Irish example of Bildungsroman, the novel strikes for the presentation of an environment in which comic transgressions seek to invalidate the social occasions which the protagonist finds himself in. While the conventions of the genre itself invoke a possible but distant progression and acquired maturity for the unhero, a story of failure and despair, an 'exegesis of squalor' takes over, with attacks to the Roman Catholic Church and th…

Methods After baseline assessment of self-reported questionnaires (pain intensity, disability, symptoms of central sensitization and pain cognitions) and quantitative sensory testing, 44 participants with knee osteoarthritis were randomized into the PNE plus knee joint mobilization or biomedical education plus knee joint …
Human artificial membranes in (bio)analytical science: Potential for in vitro prediction of intestinal absorption-A review
2021
Abstract Artificial membranes for investigation of the human absorption (oral, dermal or respiratory) of target organic compounds are aimed at mimicking the interactions occurring at and within the cell lipid membrane. Biomolecules such as proteins are also integral components of the lipid membranes and play a pivotal role towards understanding the complex mechanisms of human absorption. In this review, we will differentiate biomimetic platforms based on static (batchwise) and dynamic modes. In the former, a synthetic membrane placed between two phases (donor and acceptor) mimics a given biological system to study permeability. Parallel artificial membrane permeation assays are the most com…
