In favour of layered feet: A response to Golston

2021

In this response we argue that the factorial typology predicted in Martínez-Paricio & Kager (2015), which representationally relies on the existence of internally layered ternary feet, is complete and accurate. We demonstrate it does not suffer from the problematic cases of overgeneration pointed out by Golston (this issue). Additionally, we corroborate the idea that the internally layered ternary foot is a metrical representation that is typologically warranted for stress phenomena as well as for segmental and tonal metrically conditioned distributions. We suggest that Golston's claim that "no stress system requires internally layered ternary feet" appears to be too strong and is not empir…

Digital Pathology Enables Automated and Quantitative Assessment of Inflammatory Activity in Patients with Chronic Liver Disease

2021

Traditional histological evaluation for grading liver disease severity is based on subjective and semi-quantitative scores. We examined the relationship between digital pathology analysis and corresponding scoring systems for the assessment of hepatic necroinflammatory activity. A prospective, multicenter study including 156 patients with chronic liver disease (74% nonalcoholic fatty liver disease-NAFLD, 26% chronic hepatitis-CH etiologies) was performed. Inflammation was graded according to the Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH) Clinical Research Network system and METAVIR score. Liposomes as nonspecific nanocarriers for 5-Fluorouracil in the presence of cyclodextrins

2021

Abstract 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) is one of anticancer drugs with broad activity. Due to its severe side effects, recent studies concentrate on new ways of directed 5-FU delivery and its release in ill tissue. One of selective carriers could be cyclodextrins and liposomes. The combination of novel methods, leading to formation of inclusion complexes (IC) between host molecule of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) or 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD) and 5-FU guest and its subsequent encapsulation in dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) liposomes is studied experimentally in the present work. Several methods are applied to proof the encapsulation of the analysed drug and its release over time at 37 …

Long-Term Exposure to Transportation Noise and Risk for Type 2 Diabetes in a Nationwide Cohort Study from Denmark

2021

Background: Epidemiologic studies have linked transportation noise to increased morbidity and mortality, particularly for cardiovascular outcomes. However, studies investigating metabolic outcomes such as diabetes are limited and have focused only on noise exposures estimated for the loudest residential façade. Objectives: We aimed to examine the influence of long-term residential exposure to transportation noise at the loudest and quietest residential façades and the risk for type 2 diabetes. Methods: Road traffic and railway noise exposures (Lden) at the most and least exposed façades were estimated for all dwellings in Denmark during 1990–2017. Aircraft noise was estimated in 5-dB catego…

The degradation of intracrystalline mollusc shell proteins: a proteomics study of Spondylus gaederopus.

2021

Mollusc shells represent excellent systems for the preservation and retrieval of genuine biomolecules from archaeological or palaeontological samples. As a consequence, the post-mortem breakdown of intracrystalline mollusc shell proteins has been extensively investigated, particularly with regard to its potential use as a "molecular clock" for geochronological applications. But despite seventy years of ancient protein research, the fundamental aspects of diagenesis-induced changes to protein structures and sequences remain elusive. In this study we investigate the degradation of intracrystalline proteins by performing artificial degradation experiments on the shell of the thorny oyster, Spo…

A pilot-plant for the selective recovery of magnesium and calcium from waste brines

2021

Abstract The problem of brines disposal has raised great interest towards new strategies for their valorisation through the recovery of minerals or energy. As an example, the spent brine from ion exchange resins regeneration is often discharged into rivers or lakes, thus impacting on the process sustainability. However, such brines can be effectively reconcentrated, after removal of bivalent cations, and reused for the resins regeneration. This work focuses on developing and testing a pilot plant for selective recovery of magnesium and calcium from spent brines exploiting a novel proprietary crystallization unit. This is part of a larger treatment chain for the complete regeneration of the …

Modelling of asymmetric nanojets in coronal loops

2021

Context. Observations of reconnection jets in the solar corona are emerging as a possible diagnostic for studying highly elusive coronal heating. Such jets, and in particular those termed nanojets, can be observed in coronal loops and have been linked to nanoflares. However, while models successfully describe the bilateral post-reconnection magnetic slingshot effect that leads to the jets, observations reveal that nanojets are unidirectional or highly asymmetric, with only the jet travelling inward with respect to the coronal loop’s curvature being clearly observed. Aims. The aim of this work is to address the role of the curvature of the coronal loop in the generation and evolution of asym…

Spirometric phenotypes from early childhood to young adulthood: a Chronic Airway Disease Early Stratification study

2021

Background The prevalences of obstructive and restrictive spirometric phenotypes, and their relation to early-life risk factors from childhood to young adulthood remain poorly understood. The aim was to explore these phenotypes and associations with well-known respiratory risk factors across ages and populations in European cohorts. Methods We studied 49 334 participants from 14 population-based cohorts in different age groups (≤10, >10–15, >15–20, >20–25 years, and overall, 5–25 years). The obstructive phenotype was defined as forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1)/forced vital capacity (FVC) z-score less than the lower limit of normal (LLN), whereas the restrictive phenotype was defined a…

Finnish education system as seen from an Indonesian perspective

2021

The aim of this paper is to discuss the Finnish education system from an Indonesian perspective, and consider what citizens, notably from middle-income countries, may learn from the Finnish system. The source material is the author’s book, which provides an Indonesian perspective on the Finnish education system, supplemented by discussions from webinars and weekly Instagram Live discussions on the topic. It is known that education is part of a country’s culture, thus the Finnish education system cannot simply be implemented as such in another place. Yet there certainly are elements that can be adopted to the local culture, in this case, in Indonesia. The different models of education in Fi…

La polarità destra-sinistra e le direzioni cardinali: lingua, corpo e cultura

2021

Effectiveness of Pre-Hospital Tourniquet in Emergency Patients with Major Trauma and Uncontrolled Haemorrhage: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

2021

Trauma is one of the leading causes of uncontrolled haemorrhage, death, and disability. Use of a tourniquet can be considered an optimal anti-haemorrhagic resource, in pre-hospital and emergency settings, and its lifesaving effect is clinically contradictory. This review aims to assess the clinical efficacy of the tourniquet in the emergency pre-hospital care setting for the management of haemorrhage. We conducted the systematic review following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses, the PRISMA statement. We searched the following electronic databases: EMBASE, MEDLINE, and Cochrane-CENTRAL. All studies included were appraised for risk of bias. Prevalent prim…

Scene giudiziarie nelle tragedie e nelle commedie latine del XII e XIII secolo. Il «De Affra et Flavio», il «De Paulino et Polla» di Riccardo da Veno…

2021

Towards Efficient Use of Cement in Ultra High Performance Concrete

2021

Abstract This paper presents an investigation on substituting the cement content with an inert material, in a typical locally produced UHPC mix. A structured literature review was performed to enrichen the discussion and to benchmark the results towards already reported investigations in the research society. Investigations on cement substitution in UHPC are frequently reported. However, usually the cement is substituted with other binding materials – often pozzolanic by-products from other industries. Reports from investigations on the use of inert materials for cement substitution in UHPC seem scarce. An experimental program that included a total of 210 test specimens was executed. This p…

Economic conditions and populist radical right voting: The role of issue salience

2021

Contains fulltext : 245174.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access) In this article, we show with the European Election Study from nine Western European countries that issue salience of the economy and immigration contributes to our understanding of the puzzling relation between economic conditions and populist radical right support. In countries with relatively weak or worsening economic conditions, the economy is considered more salient, whereas immigration loses salience – also compared to other issues. Voters who perceive the economy as most important problem are less likely to opt for the populist radical right than people who perceive immigration or even other issues as most important…

Giuseppe Cocchiara, il fascismo e il razzismo

2021

Bachelor groups form due to individual choices or environmental disrupters in African striped mice

2021

International audience; In several mammal species, bachelor groups occur as a regular life history stage between dispersal and becoming the breeding male of a multi-female group. However, it is rarely investigated how such groups come into existence and how males that choose this strategy differ in life history traits from other males. Males of the socially flexible African striped mouse Rhabdomys pumilio have been historically reported to adopt one of three alternative tactics, i.e., small group-living philopatric males, intermediate solitary living roaming males, or large group-living territorial males. Here, we describe for the first time, bachelors as a fourth male tactic. Using long-te…

Coupled hydro-mechanical analysis of compacted bentonite behaviour during hydration

2021

Abstract This study analyses the response of compacted bentonites upon hydration based on a coupled hydro-mechanical elasto-plastic framework. As an alternative to multi-porosity interpretation, the framework was selected based on the experimental evidence of adsorbed water behaviour in bentonites and the volumetric response at saturated states, apparently independent of its initial state. Based on these premises, a water retention model was formulated using an explicit distinction between adsorbed water and free water, enabling the postulation of the water properties and behaviour depending on its state. In order to effectively account for the transition between unsaturated to saturated st…

I Cannot Place You: Dementia and the Pandemic Experience in The Visiting Hour by Frank McGuinness

2021

This paper presents a new play by Frank McGuinness, a play which was streamed to audiences in April 2021 and published a few weeks later. Set in contemporary Ireland, it focuses on two themes which seem to preoccupy its author: dementia, to which he devoted another play, Hanging Gardens and the consequences of living in a time of Pandemic. In particular, I argue, McGuinness indirectly seems to address an important question: how can literature and theatre offer an opportunity for reflecting about what is happening around us? Can literature help us to better understand and face the world? The play foregrounds the restorative power of emotional authenticity as we see a father and his daughter …

The aim of the work was the acquisition of the information necessary for the reconstruction of the biological profile of each individual throught the determination of sex the estimate of the biological age at death the estimate of height and the evaluation of pathologies and markers of occupational stress through current anthropological diagnostic methodologies and techniques. Althought the poor state of conservation of some individuals has not allowed their whole anthropological characterization the investigations have highlighted the heterogeneity relating to the age groups and have allowed us to ascertain the presence of pathological alterations in subjects of mature age sometimes of unknown etiology such as DISH (Diffuse Idiopathic Hyperostosis). The sample size is not representative of the entire population but subsequent insights will provide a better understanding of the population dynamics of Medieval Agrigentum.Settore BIO/08 - Antropologia

Extension of luminance component based demosaicking algorithm to 4- and 5-band multispectral images

2021

Abstract Multispectral imaging systems are currently expanding with a variety of multispectral demosaicking algorithms. But these algorithms have limitations due to the remarkable presence of artifacts in the reconstructed image. In this paper, we propose a powerful multispectral image demosaicking method that focuses on the G band and luminance component. We've first identified a relevant 4-and 5-band multispectral filter array (MSFA) with the dominant G band and then proposed an algorithm that consistently estimates the missing G values and other missing components using a convolution operator and a weighted bilinear interpolation algorithm based on the luminance component. Using the cons…

Clinical evaluation of antiseptic mouth rinses to reduce salivary load of SARS-CoV-2

2021

AbstractMost public health measures to contain the COVID-19 pandemic are based on preventing the pathogen spread, and the use of oral antiseptics has been proposed as a strategy to reduce transmission risk. The aim of this manuscript is to test the efficacy of mouthwashes to reduce salivary viral load in vivo. This is a multi-centre, blinded, parallel-group, placebo-controlled randomised clinical trial that tests the effect of four mouthwashes (cetylpyridinium chloride, chlorhexidine, povidone-iodine and hydrogen peroxide) in SARS-CoV-2 salivary load measured by qPCR at baseline and 30, 60 and 120 min after the mouthrinse. A fifth group of patients used distilled water mouthrinse as a contr…

Epigenomic landscape of human colorectal cancer unveils an aberrant core of pan-cancer enhancers orchestrated by YAP/TAZ

2021

Cancer is characterized by pervasive epigenetic alterations with enhancer dysfunction orchestrating the aberrant cancer transcriptional programs and transcriptional dependencies. Here, we epigenetically characterize human colorectal cancer (CRC) using de novo chromatin state discovery on a library of different patient-derived organoids. By exploring this resource, we unveil a tumor-specific deregulated enhancerome that is cancer cell-intrinsic and independent of interpatient heterogeneity. We show that the transcriptional coactivators YAP/TAZ act as key regulators of the conserved CRC gained enhancers. The same YAP/TAZ-bound enhancers display active chromatin profiles across diverse human t…

Emotional Intelligence Measures: A Systematic Review

2021

Emotional intelligence (EI) refers to the ability to perceive, express, understand, and manage emotions. Current research indicates that it may protect against the emotional burden experienced in certain professions. This article aims to provide an updated systematic review of existing instruments to assess EI in professionals, focusing on the description of their characteristics as well as their psychometric properties (reliability and validity). A literature search was conducted in Web of Science (WoS). A total of 2761 items met the eligibility criteria, from which a total of 40 different instruments were extracted and analysed. Most were based on three main models (i.e., skill-based, tra…
