RP-HPLC-DAD determination of the differences in the polyphenol content of Fucus vesiculosus extracts with similar antioxidant activity.
2021
Abstract Significant quantities of bioactive compounds have been found in the chemical composition of seaweeds. This source of natural antioxidants such as polyphenols appears to attenuate lipid peroxidation caused by oxidative stress, preventing the harmful effects of a number of injuries including ischemia–reperfusion (I/R). Conventional extraction (CE) has been used for years as a traditional method for obtaining bioactive components from seaweeds. However, recent studies highlight ultrasonic-assisted extraction (UAE) as an alternative and more eco-friendly technique. Therefore, the two methods were optimised and compared to obtain a Fucus vesiculosus extract (FVE) with high antioxidant …
The widespread presence of a family of fish virulence plasmids in Vibrio vulnificus stresses its relevance as a zoonotic pathogen linked to fish farms
2021
Vibrio vulnificus is a pathogen of public health concern that causes either primary septicemia after ingestion of raw shellfish or secondary septicemia after wound exposure to seawater. In consequence, shellfish and seawater are considered its main reservoirs. However, there is one aspect of its biology that is systematically overlooked: its association with fish in its natural environment. This association led in 1975 to the emergence of a zoonotic clade within phylogenetic lineage 2 following successive outbreaks of vibriosis in farmed eels. Although this clade is now worldwide distributed, no new zoonotic clades were subsequently reported. In this work, we have performed phylogenetic, ge…
The evolution of the male sexworking towards new digital scenarios
2021
The aim of this contribution is to show some features of the male sex worker in the last century, since the pathologisation of the prostitution to the full digitalisation of the sexual esplicit media. Today a lot of male sex workers have the chance to shake the stigma off and achieve a new respectable status in some subcultures.
Asymptotic modeling of electrochemical signaling: Testing Zn in urine for non-invasive bladder cancer diagnosis
2021
Abstract A theoretical model on chemical signaling for diagnosis based on the combination of signals for marker and inert and/or interfering metabolites is described. The model yields asymptotic relationships between the intensities of the signals representative of marker and accompanying metabolites compensating concentration fluctuations. The model fits well with voltammetric features associated to the oxidation of different urine metabolites and Zn(II) reduction in the same urine samples after alkaline digestion. As a result, a non-invasive electrochemical detection of urothelial carcinoma (bladder cancer, BC) is reported. Different diagnostic criteria are described all displaying high s…
Gendered Labor Market (dis)advantages in Nordic Welfare States. Introduction to the Theme of the Special Issue
2021
Gender equality has been named as one of the normative foundations of Nordic wel- fare states. This is reflected in how, year after year, Nordic states rank among the most gender egalitarian countries in the world (see, e.g., World Economic Forum 2020). In Nordic countries, the state has been, and continues to be, a central actor in shaping women’s citizenship, labor market opportunities, and caring roles. Especially publicly funded welfare services and policies that facilitate the reconciliation of work and care have played a major part in advancing women’s labor market participation (see, e.g., Bergquist et al. 1999; Borchorst & Siim 2002; Ellingsæter & Leira 2006; Siim & Stol…
A lifestyle intervention with an energy-restricted Mediterranean diet and physical activity enhances HDL function: a substudy of the PREDIMED-Plus ra…
2021
Background Consumption of a Mediterranean diet, adequate levels of physical activity, and energy-restricted lifestyle interventions have been individually associated with improvements in HDL functions. Evidence of intensive interventions with calorie restriction and physical activity is, however, scarce. Objectives To determine whether an intensive lifestyle intervention with an energy-restricted Mediterranean diet plus physical activity enhanced HDL function compared to a non-hypocaloric Mediterranean eating pattern without physical activity. Methods In 391 older adults with metabolic syndrome (mean age, 65 years; mean BMI, 33.3 kg/m2) from 1 of the Prevencion con Dieta Mediterranea-Plus t…
Efficacy of Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors Alone or in Combination With Chemotherapy in NSCLC Harboring ERBB2 Mutations
2021
Abstract Introduction In contrast to other driver mutations, no targeted therapies have yet been approved in ERBB2-mutated NSCLC (HER2mu NSCLC). Nevertheless, several compounds have revealed promising early efficacy data, which need to be evaluated in the context of current standard approaches. Although data on the efficacy of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) in second or subsequent lines of treatment remain limited and conflicting, there are virtually no data on patient outcome under ICI/platinum-doublet combinations in the first-line setting. Methods We retrospectively evaluated outcomes of patients with HER2mu NSCLC treated with ICI alone or in combination with chemotherapy within the…
Global perspective of familial hypercholesterolaemia: a cross-sectional study from the EAS Familial Hypercholesterolaemia Studies Collaboration (FHSC)
2021
Background The European Atherosclerosis Society Familial Hypercholesterolaemia Studies Collaboration (FHSC) global registry provides a platform for the global surveillance of familial hypercholesterolaemia through harmonisation and pooling of multinational data. In this study, we aimed to characterise the adult population with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia and described how it is detected and managed globally. Methods Using FHSC global registry data, we did a cross-sectional assessment of adults (aged 18 years or older) with a clinical or genetic diagnosis of probable or definite heterozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia at the time they were entered into the registries. Dat…
Dressed emitters as impurities
2021
Dressed states forming when quantum emitters or atoms couple to a photonic bath underpin a number of phenomena and applications, in particular dispersive effective interactions occurring within photonic bandgaps. Here, we present a compact formulation of the resolvent-based theory for calculating atom-photon dressed states built on the idea that the atom behaves as an effective impurity. This establishes an explicit connection with the standard impurity problem in condensed matter. Moreover, it allows us to formulate and settle in a model-independent context a number of properties previously known only for specific models or not entirely formalized. The framework is next extended to the cas…
Hiding in plain sight: observing planet-starspot crossings with the James Webb Space Telescope
2021
Transiting exoplanets orbiting active stars frequently occult starspots and faculae on the visible stellar disc. Such occultations are often rejected from spectrophotometric transits, as it is assumed they do not contain relevant information for the study of exoplanet atmopsheres. However, they can provide useful constraints to retrieve the temperature of active features and their effect on transmission spectra. We analyse the capabilities of the James Webb Space Telescope in the determination of the spectra of occulted starspots, despite its lack of optical wavelength instruments on board. Focusing on K and M spectral types, we simulate starspots with different temperatures and in differen…
Prediction Equations for Out-of-Plane Capacity of Unreinforced Masonry Infill Walls Based on a Macroelement Model Parametric Analysis
2021
In the seismic performance assessment of reinforced concrete (RC) frames, a reliable estimation of the capacity of unreinforced masonry (URM) infill walls is of utmost importance to ensure structural safety conditions. With particular attention to the out- of-plane (OoP) capacity of URM infill walls after in-plane (IP) damage, the issue of defining reliable analytical prediction models for the assessment of the capacity is an ongoing study. In this paper, empirical equations are proposed for the evaluation of the infilled frame’s OoP capacity, with or without IP damage, based on an extensive numerical parametric analysis, focusing on the influence of the key parameters that govern the mecha…
Identification of Flow-Limiting Coronary Stenosis With PCS: A New Cost-Effective Index Derived From the Product of Corrected TIMI Frame Count and Per…
2021
Background: Identifying functional coronary stenosis with simple and cost-effective methods during invasive coronary angiography is still challenging. Corrected TIMI frame count (CTFC) is considered to be the frame count velocity of coronary blood flow. We aimed to propose a simple and cost-effective index based on CTFC and percent diameter stenosis (DS) to identify flow-limiting coronary stenosis. For this, a new index was put forward as the product of CTFC and DS (PCS). PCS can be regarded as the loss of coronary blood flow due to diameter stenosis. Methods: DS, CTFC, PCS, and Fractional flow reserve (FFR) of 111 vessels in 84 patients with suspected coronary heart disease were measured. F…
Immunoglobulin G4-Related Aortitis and Severe Aortic Valve Stenosis Treated With Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement and Immunosuppression.
2021
Abstract IgG4-related disease is an immune-mediated fibro-inflammatory disorder with multisystemic involvement. Aortitis and peri-aortitis are the most common cardiovascular manifestations of the disease. We present the case of a 65-year-old man with symptomatic severe aortic stenosis and concomitant IgG4 aortitis. The diagnosis was confirmed by IgG4 serum levels, positive positron emission computed tomography (PET-CT) scans, and pathology from mediastinal dissection. Surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) was unfeasible owing to extensive mediastinal fibrosis, and transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) was successfully performed. As ascending aorta access for SAVR in IgG4 aortitis…
Coexistence of structural and magnetic phases in van der Waals magnet CrI3
2021
CrI3 has raised as an important system to the emergent field of two-dimensional van der Waals magnetic materials. However, it is still unclear why CrI3 which has a ferromagnetic rhombohedral structure in bulk, changed to anti-ferromagnetic monoclinic at thin layers. Here we show that this behaviour is due to the coexistence of both monoclinic and rhombohedral crystal phases followed by three magnetic transitions at TC1 = 61 K, TC2 = 50 K and TC3 = 25 K. Each transition corresponds to a certain fraction of the magnetically ordered volume as well as monoclinic and rhombohedral proportion. The different phases are continuously accessed as a function of the temperature over a broad range of mag…
A full-atom multiscale modelling for sodium chloride diffusion in anion exchange membranes
2021
Abstract A novel full-atom multiscale method, combining different computational approaches and aimed to describe diffusion of multiple ions in anion exchange membranes (AEM), is presented. The method is used to evaluate diffusion of chloride and sodium ions in polysulfone tetramethylammonium (PSU-TMA) membranes, with particular attention to the co-ion diffusion. The hydration of the PSU-TMA is computed as a function of the membrane ionic exchange capacity via Density Functional Theory (DFT) and used for carrying out molecular dynamics simulations (MD). An upgraded DFT-based approach is proposed to obtain the atoms’ charges used in the force field for the MD simulations. Three approaches hav…

Dystrophin and metalloproteinase 9 in myocardial ischemia: A post-mortem immunohistochemical study
2021
The presented study evaluated the expression of dystrophin and MMP-9 in cases of sudden cardiac death (SCD) due to coronary atherosclerotic disease (CAD) in order to analyze the characteristics and the chronology of their expression, providing evidence on the possible role in post-mortem diagnosis of myocardial ischemia. The expression of these proteins was also compared to C5b-9 complex and fibronectin expression to evaluate any differences. Two groups of CAD-related SCD, respectively group 1 with gross and/or histological evidence and group 2 with no specific histological signs of myocardial ischemia, were used. A third group formed by cases of acute mechanical asphyxiation was used as a …

Designing Classroom Practices for Teaching Online Inquiry : Experiences from the Field
2021
Students face several challenges when asked to locate relevant and credible information from the internet. This article introduces three principles for designing online inquiry lessons and documents what we learned from five language arts teachers from Finland who implemented and provided feedback on a learning unit framed in those design principles. Teachers implemented a researcher-designed online inquiry unit in nine upper secondary school classrooms. The unit included four 75-minute lessons sequenced to support the location, evaluation, and synthesis of information students encountered in an online inquiry task. Teachers’ diaries revealed their impressions of the unit, problems encounte…

We are only at the beginning of seeing these effects, and this new scenario offers opportunities to articulate research in the area of marketing aligned with the urgency of recovering customer trust and reactivating sales [3]. The five contributions presented in this Special Issue, “Brand Equity, Satisfaction, and Word of Mouth”, aim at being incorporated into the dynamics of methodological and thematic innovation in marketing, in reply to some of the research pr…
Ascorbic acid content and transcriptional profiling of genes involved in its metabolism during development of petals, leaves, and fruits of orange (C…
2021
Citrus fruit is one of the most important contributors to the ascorbic acid (AsA) intake in humans. Here, we report a comparative analysis of AsA content and transcriptional changes of genes related to its metabolism during development of petals, leaves and fruits of Valencia Late oranges (Citrus sinensis). Petals of close flowers and at anthesis contained the highest concentration of AsA. In fruits, AsA content in the flavedo reached a maximum at color break, whereas the pulp accumulated lower levels and experienced minor fluctuations during development. AsA levels in leaves were similar to those in the flavedo at breaker stage. The transcriptional profiling of AsA biosynthetic, degradatio…
Precision sampling fuels precision oncology: an evolutionary perspective.
2021
Intratumor heterogeneity (ITH) develops in malignant tumors. Precision sampling that captures this tumor variability is essential for the implementation of precision oncology. We highlight the necessity to update current sampling protocols and implement a strategy to ensure ITH detection and characterization. A cost-effective strategy for such sampling has been modeled in clear cell renal cell carcinoma (CCRCC).

Individual and combined DL models were trained using thickness data from 6 layers (retinal nerve fiber layer [RNFL], ganglion cell layer [GCL], inner plexiform layer [IPL], ganglion cell-IPL […
Associations of Sex Hormones and Hormonal Status With Arterial Stiffness in a Female Sample From Reproductive Years to Menopause
2021
Objective: Loss of sex hormones has been suggested to underlie menopause-associated increment in cardiovascular risk. We investigated associations of sex hormones with arterial stiffness in 19–58-years-old women. We also studied associations of specific hormonal stages, including natural menstrual cycle, cycle with combined oral contraceptives (COC) and menopausal status with or without hormone therapy (HT), with arterial stiffness. Methods: This study includes repeated measurements of 65 healthy women representing reproductive (n=16 natural, n=10 COC-users) and menopause (n=5 perimenopausal, n=26 postmenopausal, n=8 HT-users) stages. Arterial stiffness outcomes were aortic pulse wave veloc…
Influence of Ecklonia maxima Extracts on Growth, Yield, and Postharvest Quality of Hydroponic Leaf Lettuce
2021
Ecklonia maxima is a brown algae seaweed largely harvested over the last years and used to produce alginate, animal feed, fertilizers, and plant biostimulants. Their extracts are commercially available in various forms and have been applied to many crops for their growth-promoting effects which may vary according to the treated species and doses applied. The aim of the study was to characterize the effect of adding an Ecklonia maxima commercial extract (Basfoliar Kelp
Nonporous, Strong, Stretchable, and Transparent Electrospun Aromatic Polyurea Nanocomposites as Potential Anticorrosion Coating Films
2021
This study, for the first time, focused on the fabrication of nonporous polyurea thin films (~200 microns) using the electrospinning method as a novel approach for coating applications. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and hydrophilic-fumed nanosilica (HFNS) were added separately into electrospun polyurea films as nano-reinforcing fillers for the enhancement of properties. Neat polyurea films demonstrated a tensile strength of 14 MPa with an elongation of 360%. At a loading of 0.2% of MWCNTs, the highest tensile strength of 21 MPa and elongation of 402% were obtained, while the water contact angle remained almost unchanged (89°). Surface morphology analysis indicated that the producti…
Synthesis, computational docking and biological evaluation of celastrol derivatives as dual inhibitors of SERCA and P-glycoprotein in cancer therapy.
2021
Abstract A series of eleven celastrol derivatives was designed, synthesized, and evaluated for their in vitro cytotoxic activities against six human cancer cell lines (A549, HepG2, HepAD38, PC3, DLD-1 Bax-Bak WT and DKO) and three human normal cells (LO2, BEAS-2B, CCD19Lu). To our knowledge, six derivatives were the first example of dipeptide celastrol derivatives. Among them, compound 3 was the most promising derivative, as it exhibited a remarkable anti-proliferative activity and improved selectivity in liver cancer HepAD38 versus human normal hepatocytes, LO2. Compound 6 showed higher selectivity in liver cancer cells against human normal lung fibroblasts, CCD19Lu cell line. The Ca2+ mob…
In situ quantification of the nitrogen content of olivine-hosted melt inclusions from Klyuchevskoy volcano (Kamchatka): Implications for nitrogen rec…
2021
International audience; Assessing the N content of arc magmas and their mantle source remains a challenge because the volatile element composition of melts and gases can be modified during magma ascent, storage, and eruption. Given that melt inclusions (MIs) in Mg-rich olivine represent the best proxies for primary arc melts, we applied, for the first time, an in situ high-resolution secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) method to determine the N concentration in olivine-hosted MIs from Klyuchevskoy volcano in Kamchatka. To reverse the effects of post-entrapment modification processes (i.e., exsolution of volatiles into a fluid bubble), the MIs were partially to completely homogenized at h…
A Study of Osmosis Rate Through Several Proton Conducting Polymer Composite Membranes
2021
Carbon dioxide is typically considered to be a byproduct of various industrial processes that should not be released into the environment due to its nature as a harmful greenhouse gas. One of the more promising ways to dispose of it in an economical and environmentally friendly way is by using it as a raw material in electrochemical synthesis reactors. An important part of such reactors is an ion exchange membrane. In this study the influence of ZrO2 content in SPEEK – ZrO2 composite membranes on rate of osmosis trough them was investigated, with the goal of evaluating ZrO2 as an additive for making ion exchange membranes with fine-tuned osmotic permeability.
A construction of equivariant bundles on the space of symmetric forms
2021
We construct stable vector bundles on the space of symmetric forms of degree d in n+1 variables which are equivariant for the action of SL_{n+1}(C), and admit an equivariant free resolution of length 2. For n=1, we obtain new examples of stable vector bundles of rank d-1 on P^d, which are moreover equivariant for SL_2(C). The presentation matrix of these bundles attains Westwick's upper bound for the dimension of vector spaces of matrices of constant rank and fixed size.
A Comprehensive Experimental and Theoretical Study on the [{(η5-C5H5)2Zr[P(µ-PNEt2)2P(NEt2)2P]}]2O Crystalline System
2021
The structure of tetraphosphetane zirconium complex C52H100N8OP10Zr21 was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The crystal belongs to the monoclinic system, space group P21/c, with a = 19.6452(14), b = 17.8701(12), c = 20.7963(14)Å, α = γ = 90°, β = 112.953(7)°, V = 6722.7(8)Å3, Z = 4. The electronic structure of the organometallic complex has been characterized within the framework of Quantum Chemical Topology. The topology of the Electron Localization Function (ELF) and the electron density according to the Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules (QTAIM) show no covalent bonds involving the Zr atom, but rather dative, coordinate interactions between the metal and the liga…
Supramolecular polymerization of electronically complementary linear motifs: anti-cooperativity by attenuated growth†
2021
Anti-cooperative supramolecular polymerization by attenuated growth exhibited by self-assembling units of two electron-donor benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b′]dithiophene (BDT) derivatives (compounds 1a and 1b) and the electron-acceptor 4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (BODIPY) (compound 2) is reported. Despite the apparent cooperative mechanism of 1 and 2, AFM imaging and SAXS measurements reveal the formation of small aggregates that suggest the operation of an anti-cooperative mechanism strongly conditioned by an attenuated growth. In this mechanism, the formation of the nuclei is favoured over the subsequent addition of monomeric units to the aggregate, which finally results in short aggrega…
Psoriasis and its impact on the clinical outcome of patients with pulmonary embolism
2021
Abstract Background Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is common and associated with high morbidity and mortality. Although chronic inflammation was not categorized as a traditional risk factor for VTE, chronic inflammation might increase the risk to develop VTE events. While studies confirmed an increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in psoriatic patients, data regarding the influence of psoriasis on patients' cardiovascular profile and on prognosis of patients with pulmonary embolism (PE) are sparse. Purpose We aimed to investigate the impact of psoriasis on prognosis of PE patients. Methods Hospitalized PE patients were stratified for psoriasis and the impact of psoriasis on outcome …
