The bitter taste of vitamins is mediated by human TAS2R activation
2021
Vitamins play an important role in maintaining normal physiologic and metabolic functions. Vitamins are known to generate bitterness, which may contribute to the off-taste of nutritional supplements. This negative sensation may decrease product acceptability and patient compliance. Few studies have examined taste thresholds and sensory sensing mechanisms at the origin of vitamin taste detection. To better understand vitamin bitterness perception, we combined human sensory analysis and taste receptor functional assays. We measured the aqueous taste detection threshold of four B vitamins using sensory difference tests. Challenging the 25 human bitter taste 2 receptors (TAS2Rs), we found that …

Tarkoituksena on antaa tämänhetkisen tutkimustiedon valossa yleiskuva siitä, mitä teemasta tällä hetkellä tiedetään sekä pohtia tulevan tutkimuksen mahdollisuuksia, ongelmia (mukaan luettuna lähdekriittiset vaikeudet) sekä vastaisen tutkimuksen lähestymistapoja.
Virkakunta varkaissa
2021
Sittemmin historian professori Matti Klinge on pitänyt edellä mainittuja kuvauksia liioiteltuina. Klingen mukaan alueen väärinkäytökset olivat oire yhteiskuntaa modernisoivien maanomistus- ja verouudistusten läpiviennin haasteista kaskiviljelysalueilla.

Practical applications of naturalistic inquiry in intercultural education
2021
In recent years, the field of intercultural communication has seen a remarkable shift characterized by a growth in publications that distance themselves from the traditional, essentialist understanding of culture. In research, this shift is reflected in approaches that appreciate culture-in-action instead of taking culture for granted as a stable entity that pre-exists social interaction and predicts as well as explains human behavior. However, despite attempts to introduce differentiated views on culture and interculturality in education, concrete options for critical intercultural training are scarce and often remain abstract, which makes their application challenging. This article argues…
To stay or to leave? Career story models of Finnish sports graduates
2021
Previous research has revealed the challenges of sports graduates. Of particular concern is the question of how sports graduates navigate these difficulties in the job market. This study sought to understand the modern careers of sports graduates by describing different career story models among sports degree graduates. Life story data collection was employed to capture the various influences affecting career paths. The data consisted of 59 career life stories collected from Finnish sports degree graduates who were recruited through an open writing invitation. Data were analysed with the narrative method. Five typical career story models were identified among Finnish sports degree graduates…
In this paper I analyze the main structural changes that cleft c…
Magnetohydrodynamic simulations of self-consistent rotating neutron stars with mixed poloidal and toroidal magnetic fields
2021
We perform the first magnetohydrodynamic simulations in full general relativity of self-consistent rotating neutron stars (NSs) with ultrastrong mixed poloidal and toroidal magnetic fields. The initial uniformly rotating NS models are computed assuming perfect conductivity, stationarity, and axisymmetry. Although the specific geometry of the mixed field configuration can delay or accelerate the development of various instabilities known from analytic perturbative studies, all our models finally succumb to them. Differential rotation is developed spontaneously in the cores of our magnetars which, after sufficient time, is converted back to uniform rotation. The rapidly rotating magnetars sho…
Auditory event-related potentials in separating patients with depressive disorders and non-depressed controls: A narrative review
2021
This narrative review brings together the findings regarding the differences in the auditory event-related potentials (ERPs) between patients with depressive disorder and non-depressed control subjects. These studies' results can inform us of the possible alterations in sensory-cognitive processing in depressive disorders and the potential of using these ERPs in clinical applications. Auditory P3, mismatch negativity (MMN) and loudness dependence of auditory evoked potentials (LDAEP) were the subjects of the investigation. A search in PubMed yielded 84 studies. The findings of the reviewed studies were not highly consistent, but some patterns could be identified. For auditory P3b, the commo…
A Method of Transposon Insertion Sequencing in Comprehensively Identifying Vibrio vulnificus Genes Required for Growth in Human Serum
2021
One of the most powerful approaches to detect the loci that enable a pathogen to cause disease is the creation of a high-density transposon mutant library by transposon insertion sequencing (TIS) and the screening of the library using an adequate in vivo and/or ex vivo model of the disease. Here we describe the procedure for detection of the putative loci required for a septicemic pathogen to cause sepsis in humans by using TIS plus an ex vivo model of septicaemia: to grow the pathogen in fresh and inactivated human serum. We selected V. vulnificus because it is a highly invasive pathogen capable of spreading from an infection site to the bloodstream, causing sepsis and death in less than 2…
Effects of Biochar Addition on Rill Flow Resistance
2021
The development of rills on a hillslope whose soil is amended by biochar remains a topic to be developed. A theoretical rill flow resistance equation, obtained by the integration of a power velocity distribution, was assessed using available measurements at plot scale with a biochar added soil. The biochar was incorporated and mixed with the arable soil using a biochar content BC of 6 and 12 kg m−2. The developed analysis demonstrated that an accurate estimate of the velocity profile parameter Гv can be obtained by the proposed power equation using an exponent e of the Reynolds number which decreases for increasing BC values. This result pointed out that the increase of biochar content dump…
A diamagnetic iron complex and its twisted sister – structural evidence on partial spin state change in a crystalline iron complex
2021
We report here the syntheses of a diamagnetic Fe complex [Fe(HL)2] (1), prepared by reacting a redox non-innocent ligand precursor N,N′-bis(3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-hydroxy-phenyl)-1,2-phenylenediamine (H4L) with FeCl3, and its phenoxazine derivative [Fe(L′)2] (2), which was obtained via intra-ligand cyclisation of the parent complex. Magnetic measurements, accompanied by spectroscopic, structural and computational analyses show that 1 can be viewed as a rather unusual Fe(III) complex with a diamagnetic ground state in the studied temperature range due to a strong antiferromagnetic coupling between the low-spin Fe(III) ion and a radical ligand. For a paramagnetic high-spin Fe(II) complex 2 it wa…
Decontamination of Seawater in a Harbor: Case Study of Potential Bioterrorism Attack
2021
Bioterrorism attack to large harbors is likely, simply by the discharge of intentionally infected ship’s ballast water. Therefore, the ships must be equipped with the control probes of extensive microbial growth in the ballast water tanks to avoid such a scenario. In case of intentional discharge of ballast water containing Bacillus anthracis, a two-dimensional disinfection of the harbor’s seawater surface can be made using hydrophobic or surface-active disinfectant, by using humic acid with trimethylammonium groups, concentrating in the monomolecular layer on water–air interphase. It will prevent the formation and dispersion of the deadly bioaerosol to atmosphere after a bioterrorism attac…
Teräväkielinen ja liukas, mutta kruunulle korvaamaton virkamies
2021
Inflammatory capacity of exosomes released in the early stages of acute pancreatitis predicts the severity of the disease
2021
As acute pancreatitis progresses to the severe form, a life-threatening systemic inflammation is triggered. Although the mechanisms involved in this process are not yet well understood, it has been proposed that circulating exosomes may be involved in the progression of inflammation from the pancreas to distant organs. Here, the inflammatory capacity and protein profile of plasma exosomes obtained during the first 24 h of hospitalization of patients diagnosed with acute pancreatitis were characterized and compared with the final severity of the disease. We found that the final severity of the disease strongly correlates with the inflammatory capacity of exosomes in the early stages of acute…

2021
Unwanted mental intrusions (UMIs) with contents related to Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD), Illness Anxiety Disorder (IAD), and Eating Disorders (EDs) are highly prevalent, independently of the cultural and/or social context. Cognitive-behavioral explanations for these disorders postulates that the escalation from common UMIs to clinically relevant symptoms depends on the maladaptive consequences (i.e., emotions, appraisals, and control strategies) of experiencing UMIs. This study examines, from a cross-cultural perspective, the cognitive-behavioral postulates of the maladaptive consequences of having UMIs.Non-clinical 1,473 participants from Europe, the …
Näkemys oikeudenmukaisuudesta ja kihlakunnantuomarin viraltapano 1700-luvun puolivälin Vanhassa Suomessa
2021
Sven Johan Östring hoiti Vanhassa Suomessa sijainneen Savonlinnan tuomiokunnan kihlakunnantuomarin virkaa reilun vuosikymmen ajan keväästä 1747 kesään 1760. Kihlakunnantuomarin ja tuomiokunnan rahvaan välit kärjistyivät 1750-luvun lopulla talonpoikien valittaessa toistuvasti tuomari Östringin väärinkäytöksistä. Talonpoikien mukaan kihlakunnantuomari Östring oli heidän vihamiehensä. Artikkelissa kysytään, miten virkavirhevalitusprosessit etenivät ja mitkä syyt johtivat lopulta kihlakunnantuomarin viraltapanoon. Kihlakunnantuomari Östringin väärinkäytökset olivat luonteeltaan pääasiassa taloudellisia. Valituksissa korostui kuitenkin taloudellisia menetyksiä vahvemmin talonpoikien näkemys oike…
Pohjanmaan kaupunkien tuomareihin kohdistetut virkavirhesyytteet n. 1780-1880
2021

2021
Aim of the study. To analyse the therapeutic potential of granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) treatment using a rat model of traumatic sciatic nerve lesion. Clinical rationale for the study. G-CSF has proven strong neurotrophic properties in various models of ischaemic and traumatic brain injury. Fewer studies exist regarding the influence of G-CSF on posttraumatic peripheral nerve regeneration. Currently, the possibilities of pharmacological prevention or treatment of mechanical nerve injury are limited, and there is an urgent need to find new treatment strategies applicable in clinical situations. Material and methods . A controlled traumatic right sciatic nerve lesion was set u…
Synthesis of trifluoromethyl-substituted 1,2,6-thiadiazine 1-oxides from sulfonimidamides under mechanochemical conditions
2021
TBS-protected or NH-sulfonimidamides react with β-alkoxyvinyl trifluoromethylketones under solvent-free mechanochemical conditions to give 3-trifluoromethyl-substituted three-dimensional 1,2,6-thiadiazine 1-oxides. C4-Functionalized products can be obtained by starting from cyclic enones and brominations of the initially formed heterocycles. The stability of the products was investigated by varying the pH value and storage under aerobic conditions.
Triple arterial phase in the dynamic post-contrastografic MRI study of liver lesions: comparative study
2021
The objective of our work was to assess the accuracy in terms of spatial and contrast resolution, respiratory movement artifacts and synchronization of the “triple arterial phase” (TAP) sequence and compare it with the conventionally acquired arterial phase (AP). Between June 2021 and September 2021 16 patients underwent liver MRI for characterization and/or follow-up of focal hepatic lesions, and the TAP sequence was used. With the aim to obtain a TAP sequence we applied the KEYHOLE technique (modified to 35%) and the CENTRA-Keyhole method (Contrast Enhanced Timing Robust Angiography) for the K-space sampling, to the basic e-THRIVE sequence. 6/16 patients had previous MRI examinations perf…
Species interactions, environmental gradients and body size shape population niche width
2021
1. Competition for shared resources is commonly assumed to restrict population-level niche width of coexisting species. However, the identity and abundance of coexisting species, the prevailing environmental conditions, and the individual body size may shape the effects of interspecific interactions on species’ niche width. 2. Here we study the effects of interspecific and intraspecific interactions, lake area and altitude, and fish body size on the trophic niche width and resource use of a generalist predator, the littoral-dwelling large, sparsely rakered morph of European whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus; hereafter LSR whitefish). We use stable isotope, diet and survey fishing data from 14 …

From ‘intercultural-washing’ to meaningful intercultural education: Revisiting higher education practice
2021
This is the first special issue that JPHE hosts—and could there be a more suitable forum for an issue dedicated to exploring and encouraging a critical dialogue around transformative intercultural communication teaching practices in higher education (HE)? What has led us to engage with the theme of making intercultural education meaningful is a shared observation that there seems to be an increasing disconnect between recent developments in intercultural communication theory and practice. With so much critique published over the years, we are perplexed as to why traditional notions of culture still prevail not only in mainstream intercultural communication research but also in institutional…

2021
The objective of this systematic review was to assess the methods to determine bicycle saddle height and the effects of saddle height on cycling performance and injury risk outcomes. The key motivator of this review was to update and expand the finding reported by a previous narrative review published in 2011. The literature search included all documents from the following databases: Medline, Scopus, CINAHL, OVID and Google Scholar. Studies were screened against the Appraisal tool for Cross-sectional Studies to assess methodological quality and risk of bias. After screening the initial 29,398 articles identified, full-text screening was performed on 66 studies with 41 of these included in t…
Engineering in-plane mechanics of electrospun polyurethane scaffolds for cardiovascular tissue applications
2021
Effective cardiovascular tissue surrogates require high control of scaffold structural and mechanical features to match native tissue properties, which are dependent on tissue-specific mechanics, function heterogenicity, and morphology. Bridging scaffold processing variables with native tissue properties is recognized as a priority for advancing biomechanical performance of biomedical materials and, when translated to the clinical practice, their efficacy. Accordingly, this study selected electrospinning on a rotating cylindrical target as an apparatus of broad application and mapped the relationship between key processing variables and scaffold mechanics and structure. This information was…

Bioaccessibility and bioavailability of bioactive compounds from yellow mustard flour and milk whey fermented with lactic acid bacteria.
2021
Microbial fermentation with lactic acid bacteria (LAB) is a natural food biopreservation method. Yellow mustard and milk whey are optimum substrates for LAB fermentation. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the bioaccessibility and bioavailability of bioactive compounds from yellow mustard flour and milk whey both with and without LAB fermentation. All extracts were subjected to a simulated digestion process. Total polyphenols, DL-3-phenyllactic acid (PLA), lactic acid, and the antioxidant activity were determined in the studied matrices before and after simulated digestion. Yellow mustard flour was significantly richer in total polyphenols, whereas significantly higher concentrati…
Seabird migration strategies: Flight budgets, diel activity patterns and lunar influence
2021
Every year, billions of birds undertake extensive migrations between breeding and nonbreeding areas, facing challenges that require behavioural adjustments, particularly to flight timing and duration. Such adjustments in daily activity patterns and the influence of extrinsic factors (e.g., environmental conditions, moonlight) have received much more research attention in terrestrial than marine migrants. Taking advantage of the widespread deployment in recent decades of combined light-level geolocator-immersion loggers, we investigated diel organisation and influence of the moon on flight activities during the non-breeding season of 21 migrant seabird species from a wide taxonomic range (6 …
Associations of neck muscle strength and cervical spine mobility with future neck pain and disability: a prospective 16-year study.
2021
Abstract Background Neck pain has been associated with weaker neck muscle strength and decreased cervical spine range of motion. However, whether neck muscle strength or cervical spine mobility predict later neck disability has not been demonstrated. In this 16-year prospective study, we investigated whether neck muscle strength and cervical spine mobility are associated with future neck pain and related disability in women pain-free at baseline. Methods Maximal isometric neck muscle strength and passive range of motion (PROM) of the cervical spine of 220 women (mean age 40, standard deviation (SD) 12 years) were measured at baseline between 2000 and 2002. We conducted a postal survey 16 ye…

Advances in technological innovations are critical to support such functionalities to enhance safety and security. Using nexus of electrospinning and additive processing, we present how recent developments can be used to produce new generation of protective fabrics with integrative force protection, sensing/detection of chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and high yield explosives (CBRNE), and biomedical functionalities. Although electrospinning has been in use for some time, the special blends and configurations of nanofibers, as de…
Emulation of Sun-Induced Fluorescence from Radiance Data Recorded by the HyPlant Airborne Imaging Spectrometer
2021
The retrieval of sun-induced fluorescence (SIF) from hyperspectral radiance data grew to maturity with research activities around the FLuorescence EXplorer satellite mission FLEX, yet full-spectrum estimation methods such as the spectral fitting method (SFM) are computationally expensive. To bypass this computational load, this work aims to approximate the SFM-based SIF retrieval by means of statistical learning, i.e., emulation. While emulators emerged as fast surrogate models of simulators, the accuracy-speedup trade-offs are still to be analyzed when the emulation concept is applied to experimental data. We evaluated the possibility of approximating the SFM-like SIF output directly based…
Measurement of Compton scattering at MAMI for the extraction of the electric and magnetic polarizabilities of the proton
2021
A precise measurement of the differential cross-sections $d\sigma/d\Omega$ and the linearly polarized photon beam asymmetry $\Sigma_3$ for Compton scattering on the proton below pion threshold has been performed with a tagged photon beam and almost $4\pi$ detector at the Mainz Microtron. The incident photons were produced by the recently upgraded Glasgow-Mainz photon tagging facility and impinged on a cryogenic liquid hydrogen target, with the scattered photons detected in the Crystal Ball/TAPS set-up. Using the highest statistics Compton scattering data ever measured on the proton along with two effective field theories (both covariant baryon and heavy-baryon) and one fixed-$t$ dispersion …
