Construction of Metatranscriptomic Libraries for 5′ End Sequencing of rRNAs for Microbiome Research

2021

Metatranscriptomic sequencing enables studying community-wide gene expression profiles of microbial samples and getting functional insight on their up- or downregulated pathways. However, shotgun sequencing is not the most efficient way to study expression of ribosomal RNA genes or to compare lot of samples in experimental setups. Here we describe an efficient primer-independent method for processing and barcoding libraries for directional sequencing of the 5' end region of the RNA. When applying size selection of the original RNA, the method forms an optimal solution for the simultaneous analysis of bacterial, archaeal, and eukaryotic rRNA diversity.

Non-competitive Elections at the Local Level and the Incumbency Advantage of Mayors – Research Experiences from Poland

2021

The objective of this paper is an attempt to answer if non-competitive elections to commune councils in Poland may be the result of incumbency advantage of mayors. The author assumes, that the effects of incumbency advantage of mayors in influence not only the competition for the office of mayor, but also the entire local political scene. These effects may weaken the competitiveness of elections and lead to the cartelisation of local political scenes. In extreme cases, it may even cause the degeneration of political pluralism and lead to non-competitive elections at both the executive and legislative levels. The paper analyses relationships between the competitiveness of elections at the lo…

Fertility-sparing approach in women affected by stage i and low-grade endometrial carcinoma: An updated overview

2021

Endometrial cancer (EC) is a deleterious condition which strongly affects a woman’s quality of life. Although aggressive interventions should be considered to treat high-grade EC, a conservative approach should be taken into consideration for women wishing to conceive. In this scenario, we present an overview about the EC fertility-sparing approach state of art. Type I EC at low stage is the only histological type which can be addressed with a fertility-sparing approach. Moreover, no myometrium and/or adnexal invasion should be seen, and lymph-vascular space should not be involved. Regarding the pharmaceutical target, progestins, in particular medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) or megestrol …

Optical Plasmonic Nanoantenna-MWCNT diode Energy Harvester for Solar Powered Wireless Sensors

2021

This paper presents the design of an optical energy-harvester (EH) to power wireless IoT sensors. For the first time, the simulation results of the complete nanorectenna-electronic system are reported, consisting of an N*M Ag-Ti arrow bowtie nanoantenna - MWCNT-I-M diode array, a low-pass filter, and a DC-DC converter. An output voltage value of 3.3 V and an output current of 10 mA were obtained with a 49498*14286 optical array with an area of about 63, 64 mm2. The proposed optical EH paves the way for the replacement of batteries with solar energy, overcoming the limit of photovoltaic applications in wireless IoT sensors.

The Development of Vaccines from Synthetic Tumor‐Associated Mucin Glycopeptides and their Glycosylation‐Dependent Immune Response

2021

Tumor-associated carbohydrate antigens are overexpressed as altered-self in most common epithelial cancers. Their glycosylation patterns differ from those of healthy cells, functioning as an ID for cancer cells. Scientists have been developing anti-cancer vaccines based on mucin glycopeptides, yet the interplay of delivery system, adjuvant and tumor associated MUC epitopes in the induced immune response is not well understood. The current state of the art suggests that the identity, abundancy and location of the glycans on the MUC backbone are all key parameters in the cellular and humoral response. This review shares lessons learned by us in over two decades of research in glycopeptide vac…

Editorial misconduct: the case of online predatory journals.

2021

The number of publishers that offer academics, researchers, and postgraduate students the opportunity to publisharticles and book chapters quickly and easily has been growing steadily in recent years. This can be ascribed to avariety of factors, e.g., increasing Internet use, the Open Access movement, academic pressure to publish, and theemergence of publishers with questionable interests that cast doubt on the reliability and the scientific rigor of thearticles they publish. All this has transformed the scholarly and scientific publishing scene and has opened the door to theappearance of journals whose editorial procedures differ from those of legitimate journals. These publishers arecalled…

Identification, Characterization and Synthesis of Natural Parasitic Cysteine Protease Inhibitors – More Potent Falcitidin Analogs

2021

ABSTRACTProtease inhibitors represent a promising therapeutic option for the treatment of parasitic diseases such as malaria and human African trypanosomiasis. Falcitidin was the first member of a new class of inhibitors of falcipain-2, a cysteine protease of the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum. Using a metabolomics dataset of 25 Chitinophaga strains for molecular networking enabled identification of over 30 natural analogs of falcitidin. Based on MS/MS spectra, they vary in their amino acid chain length, sequence, acyl residue, and C-terminal functionalization; therefore, they were grouped into the four falcitidin peptide families A-D. The isolation, characterization and absolute st…

Europeanisation as a driver of dependent financialisation in East-Central Europe: insights from the Baltic states

2021

The aim of this paper is to contribute to advancing the academic debate on dependent financialisation through a focus on East-Central Europe. In doing so, the paper identifies the role of Europeanisation as a driver of dependent financialisation using the Baltic States of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania as case studies. The paper makes two main contributions to the literature on dependent financialisation. First, it argues that, through the establishment of 'financial chains', dependent financialisation creates asymmetric co-dependencies and bilateral risks between the 'dependent' economies in the (semi-)periphery and the financial actors in core countries. While the (semi-)peripheral economi…

One year after the ESC/EAS guidelines on cholesterol control. What's the new evidence? What's missing?

2021

The recent ESC/EAS 2019 Guidelines for the management of dyslipidaemias are centred on the causal role of low density lipoprotein (LDL), or more generally apolipoprotein B (apoB)-containing lipoproteins, in atherosclerosis as an essential principle. Despite updated goals and recommendations, that have further highlighted the importance of a powerful reduction in LDL-C levels to reduce the individual CV risk, some challenges remain to be addressed in view of future guideline elaboration. In this review, we will summarize the new evidence from clinical trials since 2019 guideline release and discuss the possible challenges for the future.

Abstract Pantomime has a long tradition in clinical neuropsychology of apraxia. It has been much more used by researchers and clinicians to assess tool-use disorders than real tool use. Nevertheless, it remains incompletely understood and has given rise to controversies, such as the involvement of the left inferior parietal lobe or the nature of the underlying cognitive processes. The present article offers a comprehensive framework, with the aim of specifying the neural and cognitive bases of pantomime. To do so, we conducted a series of meta-analyses of brain-lesion, neuroimaging, and behavioral studies about pantomime and other related tasks (i.e., real tool use, imitation of meaningless…

Glucosamine Supplementation Improves Physical Performance in Trained Mice

2021

Introduction D-Glucosamine (GlcN) is one of the most widely consumed dietary supplements and complementary medicines in the world and has been traditionally used to attenuate osteoarthritis in humans. GlcN extends lifespan in different animal models. In humans, its supplementation has been strongly associated with decreased total mortality and improved vascular endothelial function. GlcN acts as a suppressor of inflammation and by inhibiting glycolysis, it can activate the metabolism of stored fat and mitochondrial respiration. Methods The conventional human GlcN dose is 1,500 mg x day-1 but extensive evidence indicates that much higher doses are well tolerated. GlcN is one of the supplemen…

Robustness of PET Radiomics Features: Impact of Co-Registration with MRI

2021

Radiomics holds great promise in the field of cancer management. However, the clinical application of radiomics has been hampered by uncertainty about the robustness of the features extracted from the images. Previous studies have reported that radiomics features are sensitive to changes in voxel size resampling and interpolation, image perturbation, or slice thickness. This study aims to observe the variability of positron emission tomography (PET) radiomics features under the impact of co-registration with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) using the difference percentage coefficient, and the Spearman’s correlation coefficient for three groups of images: (i) original PET, (ii) PET after co-…

Importance of force feedback for following uneven virtual paths with a stylus

2021

It is commonly known that a physical textured path can be followed by indirect touch through a probe also in absence of vision if sufficiently informative cues are delivered by the other sensory channels, but prior research indicates that the level of performance while following a virtual path on a touchscreen depends on the type and channel such cues belong to. The re-enactment of oriented forces, as they are induced by localized obstacles in probe-based exploration, may be important to equalize the performance between physical and virtual path following. Using a stylus attached to a force-feedback arm, an uneven path marked by virtual bars was traversed while time and positions were measu…
