Logos’ Centrality and Expression in Martyria as a Superior Form of Dialogue

2021

This paper describes some motivations and outlines some limits regarding the possibility and necessity of interreligious, interconfessional, and interideological dialogue, in an attempt to improve our understanding of Orthodox Christianity’s role in these important aspects of domestic and foreign politics. This study aims to resolve the divergent opinions that exist in the Orthodox Church regarding the possibility of remaining in this kind of dialogue. The ancient philosophical mode of dialogue and the modern one are analyzed: dialogue as debate and negotiation. The study begins from the analysis of some technical terms describing the social and spiritual dimensions of dialogue

Tuning the Optical Absorption of Sn-, Ge-, and Zn-Substituted Cs2AgBiBr6 Double Perovskites: Structural and Electronic Effects

2021

Lead-free halide double perovskites (DPs) are highly tunable materials in terms of chemical composition and optical properties. One of the most widely reported DPs is Cs2AgBiBr6, which is envisaged as a promising absorber for photovoltaics. Nevertheless, its bandgap (around 1.9−2.3 eV) remains too large for common tandem solar cells. In this work, we report the mechanochemical synthesis of Sn-, Ge-, and Zn-substituted Cs2AgBiBr6 in powder form; their bandgaps reach 1.55, 1.80, and 2.02 eV, respectively. These differences are rationalized through density functional theory calculations, demonstrating combined electronic and structural (disorder) effects introduced by the divalent metal-cation…

Preconcentration and speciation analysis of mercury : 3D printed metal scavenger-based solid-phase extraction followed by analysis with inductively c…

2021

A selective method for preconcentration and determination of methylmercury (MeHg) and inorganic mercury (iHg) in natural water samples at the ng L−1 level has been developed. The method involves adsorption of Hg species into a 3D printed metal scavenger and sequential elution with acidic thiourea solutions before ICP-MS determination. Experimental parameters affecting the preconcentration of MeHg and iHg such as the sample matrix, effect of the flow rate on adsorption, eluent composition, and elution mode have been studied in detail. The obtained method detection limits, considering the preconcentration factors of 42 and 93, were found to be 0.05 ng L−1 and 0.08 ng L−1 for MeHg and iHg, res…

Activation of Astrocytes in the Persistence of Post-hypoxic Respiratory Augmentation

2021

Acute hypoxia increases ventilation. After cessation of hypoxia loading, ventilation decreases but remains above the pre-exposure baseline level for a time. However, the mechanism of this post-hypoxic persistent respiratory augmentation (PHRA), which is a short-term potentiation of breathing, has not been elucidated. We aimed to test the hypothesis that astrocytes are involved in PHRA. To this end, we investigated hypoxic ventilatory responses by whole-body plethysmography in unanesthetized adult mice. The animals breathed room air, hypoxic gas mixture (7% O2, 93% N2) for 2min, and again room air for 10min before and after i.p. administration of low (100mg/kg) and high (300mg/kg) doses of a…

Exposure to non-persistent pesticides in the Spanish population using biomonitoring: A review

2021

Abstract Although Spain does not have a regular national human biomonitoring program yet, different research groups are active in evaluating the exposure of children and adults to chemicals. In the last seven years, several studies in Spain have evaluated the internal exposure of the population to currently used pesticides. The present review analyzes the scope of these studies, the employed analytical methods and the main results of the exposure and risk, mainly for children and mothers. The frequency of exposure to biomarkers of exposure to organophosphate pesticides is high. Some non-specific dialkyl phosphate metabolites (DAPs), such as the diethyl phosphate (DEP), present Detection Fre…

2021

The relative stability oftrans-[(η5-C5H5)Fe(η1-CO)(μ-CO)]2(trans-I) andcis-Itautomers in a vacuum and in solvents with different dielectric constants (ε) has been investigated by exploiting density functional theory (DFT). Theoretical results indicate that, in agreement with experimental evidence,trans-Iis more stable thancis-Iin a vacuum (∼1.5 kcal mol−1;ε= 1), while the opposite is true in media withε> 7. Differently from solution, DFT outcomes pertaining to the vapor-phasecis-I⇆trans-Iequilibrium at T = 368 K, the temperature at which the Fe L2,3-edges and the C and O K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) data ofIhave been recorded, ultimately indicate thetrans-Ipredominance (∼93…

Analysis of the nonleptonic two-body decays of the Λ hyperon

2021

We systematically study two-body nonleptonic decays of light lambda hyperon $\Lambda \to p \pi^- (n\pi^0)$ with account for both short- and long-distance effects. The short-distance effects are induced by five topologies of external and internal weak $W^\pm$ exchange, while long-distance effects are saturated by an inclusion of the so-called pole diagrams with intermediate $\frac{1}{2}^+$ and $\frac{1}{2}^-$ baryon resonances. The contributions from $\frac12^+$ resonances are calculated straightforwardly by account for nucleon and $\Sigma$ baryons whereas the contributions from $\frac{1}{2}^-$ resonances are calculated by using the well-known soft-pion theorem in the current-algebra approac…

First record of Heptapleurum arboricola Hayata (Araliaceae) as a casual non-native woody plant in the Mediterranean area

2021

I report here the first record of Heptapleurum arboricola Hayata (syn. Schefflera arboricola (Hayata) Merr.) (Araliaceae) as a casual non-native plant throughout the Mediterranean area. I observed the natural regeneration in urban areas at Castellammare del Golfo, a small coastal town in north-west Sicily (Mediterranean Italy). Due to the lack of self-sustaining populations and the short-term observational period, Heptapleurum arboricola should be considered as a casual species according to the classification of non-native plants. The detection of early signs of naturalization of non-native plants is of crucial importance for the management and control of invasive species. The main abiotic …

Are importing and exporting complements or substitutes in an emerging economy? The case of Colombia

2021

The aim of this paper is to investigate the impact of two trading strategies (exporting and importing) on total factor productivity (TFP) and the potential complementarity/substitutability effects of these strategies. In order to assess these effects, robust estimates of TFP are obtained using a general method of moments approach that explicitly determines the ability of a firm's trading experience to affect productivity. Data from the Annual Manufacturing Survey spanning from 2007 to 2016 is used for Colombian manufacturing firms. Our estimation results suggest that, regardless of the technological intensity of the industry in which the firm operates, active trading strategies (exporting o…

Cancer of the Thyroid

2021

Thyroid cancers are the most frequent endocrine neoplasms whose incidence is globally increasing. Thyroid carcinomas basically derived from follicular (papillary, follicular, anaplastic and poorly differentiated) or parafollicular cells (medullary). The diagnostic evaluation of thyroid cancers is mainly based on neck ultrasonography along with fine needle aspiration. First initial risk evaluation should be carried out postoperatively, while a dynamic risk stratification should be continually assessed to personalize treatment. Whereas combination of surgery, adjuvant radioactive iodine (RAI) ablation, and hormone therapy enables high rates of cure in differentiated tumors (DTC), surgical res…

Brothers in arms: proBDNF/BDNF and sAPPα/Aβ-signaling and their common interplay with ADAM10, TrkB, p75NTR, sortilin, and sorLA in the progression of…

2021

Abstract Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is an important modulator for a variety of functions in the central nervous system (CNS). A wealth of evidence, such as reduced mRNA and protein level in the brain, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and blood samples of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) patients implicates a crucial role of BDNF in the progression of this disease. Especially, processing and subcellular localization of BDNF and its receptors TrkB and p75 are critical determinants for survival and death in neuronal cells. Similarly, the amyloid precursor protein (APP), a key player in Alzheimer’s disease, and its cleavage fragments sAPPα and Aβ are known for their respective roles in neuropro…

Genome-wide association study for milk production traits in an economically important local dairy sheep breed

2021

In this study, we conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) for five milk production traits in the Valle del Belice sheep. Repeated measurements for milk yield (MY), fat percentage and yield (F% and FY) and protein percentage and yield (P% and PY) on 481 ewes, were available for the analysis. The animals were genotyped using the Illumina Ovine 50k BeadChip. Weighted deregressed breeding values (DEBVw) were used as phenotypes for GWAS analysis. A total of 23 genome-wide significant SNPs were identified: 3 associated with MY, 9 with FY, and 11 with P%. Several SNPs mapped within known candidate genes or previously reported QTL for milk production traits in livestock species. Additional…

Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress and miRNA Impairment in Aging and Age-Related Diseases

2021

Aging is a physiological process defined by decreased cellular and tissue functions. Reduced capacity of protein degradation is one of the important hallmarks of aging that may lead to misfolded protein accumulation and progressive loss of function in organ systems. Recognition of unfolded/misfolded protein aggregates via endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress sensors activates an adaptive mechanism, the unfolded protein response (UPR). The initial step of UPR is defined by chaperone enhancement, ribosomal translation suppression, and misfolded protein degradation, while prolonged ER stress triggers apoptosis. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are non-coding RNAs affecting various signaling pathways through de…

Emulating the Effects of Radiation-Induced Soft-Errors for the Reliability Assessment of Neural Networks

2021

International audience; Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are currently one of the most widely used predictive models in machine learning. Recent studies have demonstrated that hardware faults induced by radiation fields, including cosmic rays, may significantly impact the CNN inference leading to wrong predictions. Therefore, ensuring the reliability of CNNs is crucial, especially for safety-critical systems. In the literature, several works propose reliability assessments of CNNs mainly based on statistically injected faults. This work presents a software emulator capable of injecting real faults retrieved from radiation tests. Specifically, from the device characterisation of a DRAM m…

Barriers and wellbeing-oriented enablers of intergenerational innovation in the digital age

2021

AbstractSo far, researchers have used a wellbeing-centered approach to catalyze successful intergenerational collaboration (IGC) in innovative activities. However, due to the subject’s multidisciplinary nature, there is still a dearth of comprehensive research devoted to constructing the IGC system. Thus, the purpose of this study is to fill a research void by providing a conceptual framework for information technology (IT) system designers to use as a jumping-off point for designing an IGC system with a wellbeing-oriented design. A systematic literature study was conducted to identify relevant terms and develop a conceptual framework based on a review of 75 selected scientific papers. The …

Biallelic gephyrin variants lead to impaired GABAergic inhibition in a patient with developmental and epileptic encephalopathy

2021

Abstract Synaptic inhibition is essential for shaping the dynamics of neuronal networks, and aberrant inhibition is linked to epilepsy. Gephyrin (Geph) is the principal scaffolding protein at inhibitory synapses and is essential for postsynaptic clustering of glycine (GlyRs) and GABA type A receptors. Consequently, gephyrin is crucial for maintaining the relationship between excitation and inhibition in normal brain function and mutations in the gephyrin gene (GPHN) are associated with neurodevelopmental disorders and epilepsy. We identified bi-allelic variants in the GPHN gene, namely the missense mutation c.1264G > A and splice acceptor variant c.1315-2A > G, in a patient wi…

A Band Model of Cambium Development: Opportunities and Prospects

2021

More than 60% of tree phytomass is concentrated in stem wood, which is the result of periodic activity of the cambium. Nevertheless, there are few attempts to quantitatively describe cambium dynamics. In this study, we develop a state-of-the-art band model of cambium development, based on the kinetic heterogeneity of the cambial zone and the connectivity of the cell structure. The model describes seasonal cambium development based on an exponential function under climate forcing which can be effectively used to estimate the seasonal cell production for individual trees. It was shown that the model is able to simulate different cell production for fast-, middle- and slow-growing trees under …

Mapping lava flows at Etna Volcano using Google Earth Engine, open-access satellite data, and machine learning

2021

Estimating eruptive parameters is fundamental to assess the volcanic hazards posed to the community living at the edge of active volcanoes. Here, we analyzed satellite remote sensing data by using machine learning unsupervised and supervised techniques and analytical approaches, i.e., mathematical-physics and statistics formulations, to map lava flows emitted during the long sequences of short-lived, violent eruptions occurred at Etna volcano between December 2020 and March 2021. Satellite observations allowed to follow the evolution of eruptions thanks to their capability to survey large areas with frequent revisit time and accurate spatial resolution. We quantified the areal coverage of l…

Immigration, Passing, and the Racial Other in Neo-Victorian Imperialist Fiction: The Case of Carnival Row (2019–)

2021

Abstract In this article, I provide a close reading of Season 1 of the neo-Victorian TV series Carnival Row as both an ambivalent postcolonial and neo-passing narrative. I first draw on previous criticism on postcolonial neo-Victorianism and turn-of-the-century American passing novels in order to analyze Carnival Row’s contradictory revision of imperial London through its re-imagining in a fictional city named The Burgue. I then explore the conflicting ways in which the series tackles (neo-)imperialism and colonialization, as it simultaneously criticizes and reproduces imperial ideologies and stereotypes of the racial Other. Finally, I argue that Carnival Row seems to offer a new take on Am…

MutSa expression predicts a lower disease-free survival in malignant salivary gland tumors:an immunohistochemical study

2021

Appropriate DNA replication is vital to maintain cell integrity at the genomic level. Malfunction on DNA repair mechanisms can have implications related to tumor behavior. Our aim was to evaluate the expression of key complexes of the DNA mismatch-repair system MutS? (hMSH2-hMSH6) and MutS? (hMSH2-hMSH3) in a panel comprising the most common benign and malignant salivary gland tumors (SGT), and to determine their association with disease-free survival. Ten cases of normal salivary gland (NSG) and 92 of SGT (54 benign and 38 malignant) were retrieved. Immunohistochemistry was performed for hMSH2, hMSH3, hMSH6. Scanned slides were digitally analyzed based on the percentage of positive cells w…

Neural Networks, Inside Out: Solving for Inputs Given Parameters (A Preliminary Investigation)

2021

Artificial neural network (ANN) is a supervised learning algorithm, where parameters are learned by several back-and-forth iterations of passing the inputs through the network, comparing the output with the expected labels, and correcting the parameters. Inspired by a recent work of Boer and Kramer (2020), we investigate a different problem: Suppose an observer can view how the ANN parameters evolve over many iterations, but the dataset is oblivious to him. For instance, this can be an adversary eavesdropping on a multi-party computation of an ANN parameters (where intermediate parameters are leaked). Can he form a system of equations, and solve it to recover the dataset?

Spin-crossover nanoparticles anchored on MoS2 layers for heterostructures with tunable strain driven by thermal or light-induced spin switching

2021

In the past few years, the effect of strain on the optical and electronic properties of MoS2 layers has attracted particular attention as it can improve the performance of optoelectronic and spintronic devices. Although several approaches have been explored, strain is typically externally applied on the two-dimensional material. In this work, we describe the preparation of a reversible ‘self-strainable’ system in which the strain is generated at the molecular level by one component of a MoS2-based composite material. Spin-crossover nanoparticles were covalently grafted onto functionalized layers of semiconducting MoS2 to form a hybrid heterostructure. Their ability to switch between two spi…
