La responsabilità della capogruppo per la violazione del duty of care: note a margine di Okpabi v. Royal Dutch Shell Plc
2021
The paper examines a UK-Supreme Court of Justice decision (Okbapi v. Royal Dutch Shell Plc) concerning the liability of a parent company for the abusive con-ducts of its subsidiaries. The Court explores whether and in what circumstances the UK-domiciled parent company of a multi-national group of companies may owe a common law duty of care to individuals who allegedly suffer serious harm as a re-sult of alleged systemic health, safety and environmental failings of one of its overseas subsidiaries as the operator of a joint venture operation. Although the decision focuses on preliminary issues of summary judgment, it pro-vides inputs to a renewed reflection on the duty of care upon the paren…
Including gender perspective in a Computer Engineering Degree
2021
The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development defines the need to guarantee an inclusive and equitable quality education for all people. This means that education systems should introduce the gender debate in different areas of education, from teacher training to the definition of subject knowledge, with the purpose of changing traditional roles and gender stereotypes. Incorporating the gender perspective in teaching involves reflecting on the different elements that make up the teaching-learning process from the point of view of the sex and gender variables. But, in addition, it means understanding in what context that teaching is taught and what competences must be offered to students. This…
Decay assessment of stone-built cultural heritage: The case study of the cosenza cathedral façade (south calabria, italy)
2021
This study aims to assess the different decay phenomena affecting the Cosenza Cathedral façade (Calabria, South Italy) through the evaluation of the relative damage indices. For this goal, a multidisciplinary approach was applied exploiting both nondestructive and microdestructive techniques. Such a combination enabled proposing an intervention priority scale that can be helpful to institutions when planning a prompt restoration intervention. The results suggest the efficiency of this approach to obtain a multidisciplinary diagnostic and conservation system for the management and valorization of the Cultural Heritage also in terms of monitoring, maintenance, and selection of the most suitab…
Dosimetric effect of respiratory motion on planned dose in whole-breast volumetric modulated arc therapy using moderate and ultra-hypofractionation.
2021
Abstract Background and purpose The interplay effect of respiratory motion on the planned dose in free-breathing right-sided whole-breast irradiation (WBI) were studied by simulating hypofractionated VMAT treatment courses. Materials and methods Ten patients with phase-triggered 4D-CT images were included in the study. VMAT plans targeting the right breast were created retrospectively with moderately hypofractionated (40.05 Gy in 15 fractions of 2.67 Gy) and ultra-hypofractionated (26 Gy 5 fractions of 5.2 Gy) schemes. 3D-CRT plans were generated as a reference. All plans were divided into respiratory phase-specific plans and calculated in the corresponding phase images. Fraction-specific d…
The effectiveness of cochlear implantation on performance-based and patient-reported outcome measures in Finnish recipients
2021
Understanding speech is essential for adequate social interaction, and its functioning affects health, wellbeing, and quality of life (QoL). Untreated hearing loss (HL) is associated with reduced social activity, depression and cognitive decline. Severe and profound HL is routinely rehabilitated with cochlear implantation. The success of treatment is mostly assessed by performance-based outcome measures such as speech perception. The ultimate goal of cochlear implantation, however, is to improve the patient’s QoL. Therefore, patient-reported outcomes measures (PROMs) would be clinically valuable as they assess subjective benefits and overall effectiveness of treatment. The aim of this study…
Numerical analysis of a new cross-flow type hydraulic turbine for high head and low flow rate
2021
Cross-flow turbines have recently been proposed for energy recovery in aqueducts when the outlet pressure is greater than zero, owing to their constructive simplicity and good efficiency within a large range of flow rates and head drops. In the case of high head drop (higher than 150 m) and relatively small discharge (lower than 0.2 m3/s), the traditional design of these turbines leads to very small widths of the nozzle and the runner; as a consequence, friction losses grow dramatically and efficiency drops down to very low values. Standard Pelton turbines require zero outlet pressure and cannot be used as alternatives. A new counter-pressure hydraulic turbine for high head and low flow rat…
Iron-Catalyzed Cross-Coupling Reactions of Alkyl Grignards with Aryl Chlorobenzenesulfonates
2021
Aryl sulfonate esters are versatile synthetic intermediates in organic chemistry as well as attractive architectures due to their bioactive properties. Herein, we report the synthesis of alkyl-substituted benzenesulfonate esters by iron-catalyzed C(sp2)–C(sp3) cross-coupling of Grignard reagents with aryl chlorides. The method operates using an environmentally benign and sustainable iron catalytic system, employing benign urea ligands. A broad range of chlorobenzenesulfonates as well as challenging alkyl organometallics containing β-hydrogens are compatible with these conditions, affording alkylated products in high to excellent yields. The study reveals that aryl sulfonate esters are the m…

INTERVENCIÓN PSICOSOCIAL EN ESPACIOS DE ALTA DIVERSIDAD EXPERIENCIA INTERCULTURAL Y BUENA PRAXIS
2021
espanolPsychosocial interventional approaches in reducing intergroup biases can be divided into two areas: intragroup and intergroup. The former includes work with counterstereotypespecimens (Plant et al., 2009), strategies based on cognitive dissonance (Festinger, 1957, cited in Rodriguez, 2019) and the promotion of empathy (Galinsky & Moskowitz, 2000; Stephan & Finlay, 1999). Intergroup strategies are those based on the contact hypothesis (Allport, 1954, cited in Rodriguez, 2019) and those based on the theory of social categorization or sociocognitive strategies (Tajfel & Turner, 1979). The research was ascribed to the interventional research model proposed by Rothman and Thomas (1994), c…
The role of personal and relative job performance in promotion decisions
2021
This study employs personnel data from a large university to examine how supervisors utilize information on employees' job performance in promotion decisions. The study shows that better-performing employees are rewarded with promotions as a higher output of peer-reviewed publications and better quality of research output are associated with a higher probability of being promoted. The study also shows that supervisors compare their subordinates' job performance when deciding on promotions: employees who outperform their colleagues in terms of research output and research quality are more likely to be promoted. Subsequently, the study provides evidence to support the key premise of the tourn…
Using Macroelement Content to Characterize Surficial Water Quality of Artificial Reservoirs
2021
Abstract The quality of surface waters in the territory of Poland, despite the implemented remedial measures, is mostly classified as bad. This article presents the results of research on the composition of water macroelements in 24 artificial reservoirs located in Opole province (southern Poland), searching for the reasons behind their pollution. Concentrations of the anions F−, Cl−, Br−, NO2−, NO3−, PO43− and SO42− and cations Na+, NH4+, K+, Mg2+ and Ca2+ were taken into account. An analysis of seasonal changes was carried out and, on the example of a dam reservoir (Turawa Big Reservoir), a multi-point analysis of the distribution of ion concentrations in water at the reservoir surface w…

BackgroundThe prevalences of obstructive and restrictive spirometric phenotypes, and their relation to early-life risk factors from childhood to young adulthood remain poorly understood. The aim was to explore these phenotypes and associations with well-known respiratory risk factors across ages and populations in European cohorts.MethodsWe studied 49 334 participants from 14 population-based cohorts in different age groups (≤10, >10–15, >15–20, >20–25 years, and overall, 5–25 years). The obstructive phenotype was defined as forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1)/forced vital capacity (FVC) z-score less than the lower limit of normal (LLN), whereas the restrictive phenotype was def…
Analytical description of resonances in Fabry–Perot and whispering gallery mode resonators
2021
Whispering gallery mode optical resonators have attracted attention due to their simplicity and applicability for sensing. In this paper, analytical formulas are provided that describe resonance conditions in optical resonators. Basic terms (resonance wavelengths and frequencies, free spectral range, Q -factor, summation principle of Q -factors of various processes, finesse, etc.) are introduced. A description of interference of an infinite number of waves of progressively smaller amplitudes and equal phase differences is given. A description of a Fabry–Perot resonator with nonequal reflection coefficients is also given as well as analysis of all-pass and add-drop optical filters. The prese…
Simulation of organics in the atmosphere: evaluation of EMACv2.54 with the Mainz Organic Mechanism (MOM) coupled to the ORACLE (v1.0) submodel
2021
Abstract. An updated and expanded representation of organics in the chemistry general circulation model EMAC (ECHAM5/MESSy for Atmospheric Chemistry) has been evaluated. First, the comprehensive Mainz Organic Mechanism (MOM) in the submodel MECCA (Module Efficiently Calculating the Chemistry of the Atmosphere) was activated with explicit degradation of organic species up to five carbon atoms and a simplified mechanism for larger molecules. Second, the ORACLE submodel (version 1.0) considers now condensation on aerosols for all organics in the mechanism. Parameterizations for aerosol yields are used only for the lumped species that are not included in the explicit mechanism. The simultaneous…
Mediterranean rocky reefs in the Anthropocene: Present status and future concerns
2021
Global change is striking harder and faster in the Mediterranean Sea than elsewhere, where high levels of human pressure and proneness to climate change interact in modifying the structure and disrupting regulative mechanisms of marine ecosystems. Rocky reefs are particularly exposed to such environmental changes with ongoing trends of degradation being impressive. Due to the variety of habitat types and associated marine biodiversity, rocky reefs are critical for the functioning of marine ecosystems, and their decline could profoundly affect the provision of essential goods and services which human populations in coastal areas rely upon. Here, we provide an up-to-date overview of the statu…

Zur (unaufhaltsamen?) Verwischung der Grenzen zwischen Gemein-und Fachsprache: die Lehren aus dem COVID19-Diskurs
2021
International audience; Zur (unaufhaltsamen?)
Pre-operative interventional radiology: could it have a role before complex laparoscopic surgery?
2021
Bleedings occurring during a surgical intervention can be caused by haemostatic defects, but they are generally due to ineffective local haemostasis. Current coagulation systems may not be sufficient to achieve a good haemostasis, causing, at the same time, tissue dama-ge. Furthermore, the availability of such devices does not eliminate difficulties linked to the isolation of vessels, a crucial step of surgical procedures that require the removal of an organ or part of it, in case of inflammation or neoplasm. This difficulty is even more evident, and weighs more on operative times, when the surgeon engages with video-assisted surgery, where anatomical structures are difficult to detect and …
State of the Art on Sustainability Assessment of Positive Energy Districts: Methodologies, Indicators and Future Perspectives

2021
In recent years, botanical insecticides based on essential oils (EOs), or their main components, have received much attention as promising tools for Integrated Pest Management, due to their environmental safety and low side effects on non-target organisms. In this study, Carlina acaulis EO and its main component, carlina oxide, recently proven to be effective larvicidal and adulticidal agents against some insect pests, were analyzed for their toxicity, electroantennographic (EAG), and behavioral responses to adult olive fruit fly (Bactrocera oleae). The C. acaulis EO was more toxic to the tephritid than the carlina oxide, and both were more toxic to the same insect pest than EOs from other …
Double asymmetric intramolecular aza-Michael reaction: a convenient strategy for the synthesis of quinolizidine alkaloids.
2021
A new methodology to access the quinolizidine skeleton in an asymmetric fashion was devised. It involves two consecutive intramolecular aza-Michael reactions of sulfinyl amines bearing a bis-enone moiety, in turn generated by a monodirectional cross metathesis reaction. The sequence, which takes place with excellent yields and diastereocontrol, was applied to the total synthesis of alkaloids lasubine I and myrtine.
Educational Differences in Diabetes Mortality among Hispanics in the United States: An Epidemiological Analysis of Vital Statistics Data (1989–2018)
2021
Background: Diabetes accounted for approximately 10% of all-cause mortality among those 20–79 years of age worldwide in 2019. In 1986–1989, Hispanics in the United States of America (USA) represented 6.9% of the national population with diabetes, and this proportion increased to 15.1% in 2010–2014. Recently published findings demonstrated the impact of attained education on amenable mortality attributable to diabetes among Non-Hispanic Whites (NHWs) and Non-Hispanic Blacks (HNBs). Previous cohort studies have shown that low education is also a detrimental factor for diabetes mortality among the Hispanic population in the USA. However, the long-term impact of low education on diabetes mortal…
The direct effect of magnetic tape ® on pain and lower-extremity blood flow in subjects with low-back pain: A randomized clinical trial
2021
Low-back pain has a high impact on the world population, and solutions are in demand. The behavior of specific physiological processes has been modified using magnetic fields, whether for pain relief, bone consolidation, or improvement of vascularization. The use of tape with magnetic properties could help in these cases. A double-blind randomized clinical trial was designed to use Magnetic Tape® versus placebo Kinesio tape. Blood flow variables were evaluated using pulsed power Doppler ultrasound. Resistance index, pulsatility index, systolic velocity, and diastolic velocity were measured. The pressure pain threshold was measured using algometry in 22 subjects. The results reveal significa…
Massive quarks in NLO dipole factorization for DIS : Longitudinal photon
2021
In this work, we will present the first complete calculation of the one-loop longitudinal photon-to-quark-antiquark light cone wave function, with massive quarks. The quark masses are renormalized in the pole mass scheme. The result is used to calculate the next-to-leading order correction to the high energy Deep Inelastic Scattering longitudinal structure function on a dense target in the dipole factorization framework. For massless quarks the next-to-leading order correction was already known to be sizeable, and our result makes it possible to evaluate it also for massive quarks.

Comparison of Causality Network Estimation in the Sensor and Source Space: Simulation and Application on EEG
2021
The usage of methods for the estimation of the true underlying connectivity among the observed variables of a system is increasing, especially in the domain of neuroscience. Granger causality and similar concepts are employed for the estimation of the brain network from electroencephalogram (EEG) data. Also source localization techniques, such as the standardized low resolution electromagnetic tomography (sLORETA), are widely used for obtaining more reliable data in the source space. In this work, connectivity structures are estimated in the sensor and in the source space making use of the sLORETA transformation for simulated and for EEG data with episodes of spontaneous epileptiform discha…
Sustainable Development Goals and Performance Measurement of Positive Energy District: A Methodological Approach
2021
The “Positive Energy Districts and Neighbourhoods for Sustainable Urban Development” program launched by the European Union can be considered a milestone towards the clean energy transition and carbon neutrality of urban areas. The achievement of this ambitious transition requires properly defined methodologies and action plans grounded on the main environmental, economic, and social pillars of sustainability. This paper is focused on the definition of a methodology for the characterization of PEDs sustainability assessment in terms of Sustainable Development Goals. In particular, the main research question to be answered regards the allocation of the surplus energy of PEDs to target the su…
Secondary Students’ Sensory Preferences and Their Influence on Science Academic Achievement

Evidence has been found that some students seem to have learning obstacles associated with particular sensory preferences when dealing with instructional materials. Therefore, knowing students’ sensory preferences could help teachers improve instructional resources. Our objectives were: (1) to describe Secondary students’ sensory preferences according to gender and age; (2) to analyse the possible association between students’ sensory preferences and their general academic achievement in science. We conducted a synchronic, cross-sectional descriptive study in a sample of 582 male and female students from 7th to 11th grade using the VARK questionnaire. There was a significant predominance of…
Up-Conversion Luminescence Processes in NaLaF4 Doped with Tm3+ and Yb3+ and Dependence on Tm3+ Concentration and Temperature
2021
In this work, luminescence processes in polycrystalline NaLaF4:Tm3+ and NaLaF4:Tm3+,Yb3+ materials were studied. Luminescence spectra and decay kinetics measurements were performed for NaLaF4 doped with various Tm3+ concentrations (0.01, 0.1, 0.5, 1, and 2 mol%) under direct excitation to 3P0, 1D2, 1G4, and 3H4 states. It was found that some of the Tm3+ excited states are more affected by Tm3+ concentration than other states. Under infrared excitation of Yb3+, energy transfer to Tm3+ occurred and intensive ultraviolet and blue up-conversion luminescence was observed. Possible up-conversion mechanisms are discussed. Spectroscopic measurements show that long-duration excitation radiation red…
