Teacher Educators’ Professional Identity in English-Medium Instruction at a Finnish University

2021

Publisher Copyright: © 2021, University of Ljubljana. All rights reserved. Although different forms of English-medium instruction (EMI) are being recognised, the different ways in which EMI can impact the pedagogical activities and expertise of higher education educators have received less attention. Using face-to-face and written interviews with nine teacher educators at a Finnish university, this study examines the most important aspects teacher educators perceive in their work through EMI and how these aspects connect to the understanding of their professional identity. The study is theoretically premised on the interconnected concepts of pedagogical doing, pedagogical being, pedagogical…

La dimensión social del lenguaje como una oportunidad educativa para la promoción del diálogo intercultural en el aula de Educación Superior

2021

[EN] For some time, it has been considered the need to approach the educational experience to the student sociocultural reality in the context of a classroom in Higher Education. This need is even more evident in the context of international exchange programs, in which the main objective is precisely to provide a space for mutual enrichment between the student's culture of origin and the host culture. In this sense, the “Grup d’Acompanyament Lingüístic” (GRUPal) works to promote the intercultural dialogue that inevitably and spontaneously takes place in and outside the classroom. The purpose of this paper is to present a didactic intervention based on inclusion and cooperative exchange as w…

Cine y ética en contabilidad: una experiencia sobre la mejora en sensibilidad ética

2021

[EN] In this paper we present a learning experience in which for the first time we introduce cinema as a teaching methodology in a higher level accounting course to explore the concept of ethical sensitivity. Our study shows that the ethical sensitivity achieved with the viewing of the film positively impacts the student's grade. The students most satisfied with this learning methodology were the ones who got a good answer for the question on ethics in the questionnaire- which would imply a greater ethical motivation and ethical character. However, no conclusions can be drawn about the significance of the impact on the qualification of ethical motivation or the ethical character developed i…

Do IMC and ecological knowledge drive value co-creation? The new way to loyalty in hospitality

2021

Despite co-creation being considered a valuable strategy for incremental changes towards more sustainable activities and consumers’ declared interest, hospitality businesses still did not experience the expected level of client engagement in their service interactions. Therefore, the primary purpose of this paper is to examine the nature of value co-creation and its antecedents and consequences within the hotel industry context through the lens of sustainability. Integrated marketing communication (IMC) and ecological knowledge are examined as factors that enhance value co-creation. Satisfaction is observed as a mediator of the relationship between value co-creation and customer loyalty. A …

Estrategia de enseñanza y aprendizaje de programación basada en la idea de ’hackathon’

2021

[EN] The acquisition of programming and data analysis skills in higher education is increa-singly necessary in all areas of Science and Engineering. In this paper we present a methodology for the motivation of programming learning, mainly focused on the deve-lopment of machine learning algorithms. This methodology is based on the hackathon idea and will have different levels. On the one hand the basic level where a competition is proposed in an improvised way during the development of the class. A second level where a programmed hackathon is proposed but within the classroom environment and using learning management systems such as Moodle. The last level consists of parti-cipation in an exte…

Las clases prácticas de Fisiología Humana y el trabajo previo del estudiante utilizando la plataforma MOODLE: un estudio a pie de aula

2021

[EN] Among the most novel transformations our educational model has undergone, we find the introduction of innovative teaching methodologies that seek to promote the autonomous work of the student. In the subject of Human Physiolgy, practical teaching is essential. However, students need an extensive theoretical review previous to the practical lesson that consume a significant part of the time allocated to practical learning. In this work, we have developed an innovative teaching methodology that encourages students of the Degree in Optics and Optometry of the University of Valencia to prepare practical lessons in advance by solving previous questionnaires in MOODLE. This enhances their ab…

El descubrimiento de nuevos fármacos, concepto umbral en farmacología.

2021

[EN] The so-called “threshold concepts” are present in all areas of study. Its acquisition by the student represents a milestone in the advancement of the conceptual understanding of a subject. They are often difficult to learn, but when they are overcome they generate a reconceptualization that allows progress and deepening in the subject of study. We present an activity designed to develop a key threshold concept in pharmacology, the drug discovery process. To do this, we develop a practical laboratory project that will integrate both the extraction and search for active ingredients and the simulation of some aspects of their clinical trials in the phase I.

The evolution of splicing: transcriptome complexity and transcript distances implemented in TranD

2021

AbstractAlternative splicing contributes to organismal complexity. Comparing transcripts between and within species is an important first step toward understanding questions about how evolution of transcript structure changes between species and contributes to sub-functionalization. These questions are confounded with issues of data quality and availability. The recent explosion of affordable long read sequencing of mRNA has considerably widened the ability to study transcriptional variation in non-model species. In this work, we develop a computational framework that uses nucleotide resolution distance metrics to compare transcript models for structural phenotypes: total transcript length,…

Common and separable behavioral and neural mechanisms underlie the generalization of fear and disgust

2021

Generalization represents the transfer of a conditioned responses to stimuli that resemble the conditioned stimulus (CS). Previous studies on generalization of defensive avoidance responses have primarily focused on fear and have neglected disgust generalization, which represents a key pathological mechanism in some anxiety disorders. In the present study we examined common and distinct mechanisms of fear and disgust generalization by means of a fear or disgust multi-CS conditioning and generalization paradigm with concomitant event-related potential (ERPs) acquisition in n = 62 subjects. We demonstrate that compared to fear, disgust-relevant generalized stimuli (GS) elicited larger expecta…

[EN] In an ever-changing economic and business environment, it is especially interesting that students learn, and experiment with their own decision-making, about behavioral finance. This experience will provide them with a better understanding of the economic agents’ behavior in different real- life situations (auctions, pricing, negotiations, investing and financing decisions). By experimenting, they acquire solid knowledge about biases, rational and irrational behaviors, and motivations that govern economic life. Controlled economic experiments in the classroom, a gamification learning methodology, allow students to better understand complex economic-financial concepts such as the herdin…

The importance of kinematic twists and genuine saturation effects in dijet production at the Electron-Ion Collider

2021

We compute the differential yield for quark anti-quark dijet production in high-energy electron-proton and electron-nucleus collisions at small $x$ as a function of the relative momentum $\boldsymbol{P}_\perp$ and momentum imbalance $\boldsymbol{k}_\perp$ of the dijet system for different photon virtualities $Q^2$, and study the elliptic and quadrangular anisotropies in the relative angle between $\boldsymbol{P}_\perp$ and $\boldsymbol{k}_\perp$. We review and extend the analysis in [1], which compared the results of the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) with those obtained using the transverse momentum dependent (TMD) framework. In particular, we include in our comparison the improved TMD (ITMD…

Associations Between Lipoprotein Subfractions and Area and Density of Abdominal Muscle and Intermuscular Adipose Tissue: The Multi-Ethnic Study of At…

2021

Skeletal muscle quantity and quality decrease with older age, which is partly attributed to ectopic fat infiltration and has negative metabolic consequences. To inform efforts to preserve skeletal muscle with aging, a better understanding of biologic correlates of quantity and quality of muscle and intermuscular adipose tissue (IMAT) is needed. We used targeted lipidomics of lipoprotein subfractions among 947 Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis participants to provide a detailed metabolic characterization of area and density of abdominal muscle and IMAT. Serum lipoprotein subfractions were measured at the first visit using 1H-Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy. Muscle and IMAT area (…

Background: Serum uric acid predicts the onset and progression of kidney disease, and the occurrence of cardiovascular and all-cause mortality. Nevertheless, it is unclear which is the appropriate definition of hyperuricemia in presence of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Our goal was to study the independent impact of uric acid and CKD on mortality. Methods: We retrospectively investigated 21,963 patients from the URRAH study database. Hyperuricemia was defined on the basis of outcome specific cut-offs separately identified by ROC curves according to eGFR strata. The primary endpoints were cardiovascular and all-cause mortality. Results: After a mean follow-up of 9.8 year, there were 1,582 (7.2…

Leveraging Uncertainty Estimates to Improve Segmentation Performance in Cardiac MR

2021

International audience; In medical image segmentation, several studies have used Bayesian neural networks to segment and quantify the uncertainty of the images. These studies show that there might be an increased epistemic uncertainty in areas where there are semantically and visually challenging pixels. The uncertain areas of the image can be of a great interest as they can possibly indicate the regions of incorrect segmentation. To leverage the uncertainty information, we propose a segmentation model that incorporates the uncertainty into its learning process. Firstly, we generate the uncertainty estimate (sample variance) using Monte-Carlo dropout during training. Then we incorporate it …

Theta power and theta-gamma coupling during formation of novel representations in the infant brain

2021

Item does not contain fulltext Building object representations is crucial for understanding the visual world, but it is not yet understood how infants start to form these representations. In adults, theta power is higher during presentation of stimuli that were later remembered, compared to those later forgotten (Friese et al., 2013), and the coupling between theta phase and gamma amplitude has been shown to be responsible for binding perceptual features to form representations. Theta-gamma coupling has been observed, for example, during the formation of visual associations (Köster, Finger, Graetz, Kater & Gruber, 2018), and was again higher for remembered than forgotten stimuli. SARS-CoV-2 vaccination modelling for safe surgery to save lives: data from an international prospective cohort study

2021

Abstract Background Preoperative SARS-CoV-2 vaccination could support safer elective surgery. Vaccine numbers are limited so this study aimed to inform their prioritization by modelling. Methods The primary outcome was the number needed to vaccinate (NNV) to prevent one COVID-19-related death in 1 year. NNVs were based on postoperative SARS-CoV-2 rates and mortality in an international cohort study (surgical patients), and community SARS-CoV-2 incidence and case fatality data (general population). NNV estimates were stratified by age (18–49, 50–69, 70 or more years) and type of surgery. Best- and worst-case scenarios were used to describe uncertainty. Results NNVs were more favourable in su…

We study the effect of contextual information obtained from a user’s digital trace on Web search performance. Contextual information is modeled using Dirichlet–Hawkes processes (DHP) and used in augmenting Web search queries. The context is captured by monitoring all naturally occurring user behavior using continuous 24/7 recordings of the screen and associating the context with the queries issued by the users. We report a field study in which 13 participants installed a screen recording and digital activity monitoring system on their laptops for 14 days, resulting in data on all Web search queries and the associated context data. A query augmentation (QAug) model was built to expand the or…

The driving factors of new particle formation and growth in the polluted boundary layer

2021

Publisher Copyright: © 2021 Mao Xiao et al. New particle formation (NPF) is a significant source of atmospheric particles, affecting climate and air quality. Understanding the mechanisms involved in urban aerosols is important to develop effective mitigation strategies. However, NPF rates reported in the polluted boundary layer span more than 4 orders of magnitude, and the reasons behind this variability are the subject of intense scientific debate. Multiple atmospheric vapours have been postulated to participate in NPF, including sulfuric acid, ammonia, amines and organics, but their relative roles remain unclear. We investigated NPF in the CLOUD chamber using mixtures of anthropogenic vap…

AbstractWe show that if X is a first-countable Urysohn space where player II has a winning strategy in the game $$G^{\omega _1}_1({\mathcal {O}}, {\mathcal {O}}_D)$$ G 1 ω 1 ( O , O D ) (the weak Lindelöf game of length $$\omega _1$$ ω 1 ) then X has cardinality at most continuum. This may be considered a partial answer to an old question of Bell, Ginsburg and Woods. It is also the best result of this kind since there are Hausdorff first-countable spaces of arbitrarily large cardinality where player II has a winning strategy even in the weak Lindelöf game of countable length. We also tackle the problem of finding a bound on the cardinality of a first-countable space where player II has a wi…

Image is everything! Professional football players’ visibility and wages: evidence from the Italian Serie A

2021

Sport is one of the most popular forms of entertainment and its worldwide spread has turned athletes into icons who have economic impact and international visibility as global brands. In our paper we would like to show how marketing strategies in the sports industry, amplified by social networks, have put the athlete at the centre of media attention In the world of football, football players have come to play a key role, since their image is the face of their clubs, and this can affect the number of digital fans, that is, fans who are not bound to a club by constant passion but who can change team depending on the athletes that have been lined up. This could explain why the teams playing in…
