Cosmopolitans and communitarians: A typology of football fans between national and European influences

2021

International audience; The past 25 years have seen an unprecedented Europeanisation of the structures and governance in football across the continent. A European (and global) transfer market for players and managers has become the norm and a pan-European league system has been established that regularly exposes supporters to transnational competitions and players from all over Europe. At the same time, manifold typologies of football fans have been established, distinguishing groups of fans based on, for example, fan intensity, fan behaviour or their attitudes towards different actors in the field. The attitudes towards Europe and the self-identification of these fans within Europeanised f…

Restoration of Abundance and Dynamics of Coastal Fish and Lobster Within Northern Marine Protected Areas Across Two Decades

2021

This article reviews a suite of studies conducted in a network of coastal Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in Skagerrak, Southeast Norway. In 2006, Norway’s first lobster reserves were implemented, with the aim of protecting European lobster (Homarus gammarus) through a ban on fixed gear. A before–after control-impact paired series (BACIPS) monitoring program was initiated to evaluate effects of protection on depleted lobster populations. Experimental trapping and capture-recapture techniques were combined to track demography of populations, also including movement of individuals within and beyond MPAs and adjacent control areas. Further, population genetics and parentage studies were applied,…

Diagnostic Performance of Muscle Echo Intensity and Fractal Dimension for the Detection of Frailty Phenotype

2021

To determine the relationship between muscle echo intensity (EI) and fractal dimension (FD), and the diagnostic performance of both ultrasound parameters for the identification of frailty phenotype. A retrospective interpretation of ultrasound scans from a previous cohort (November 2014–February 2015) was performed. The sample included healthy participants <60 years old, and participants ≥60 divided into robust, pre-frail, and frail groups according to Fried frailty criteria. A region of interest of the rectus femoris from the ultrasound scan was segmented, and histogram function was applied to obtain EI. For fractal analysis, images were processed using two-dimensional box-counting techniq…

New Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) Crossing Borders Beyond Cities, Nations, and Continents: Impact of International Travel

2021

The third outbreak of coronavirus in the form of the COVID-19 infection started in Wuhan, China, in December 2019. The early and rapid spread of this infection across borders can be largely attributed to international air travel that has become a part of modern globalization. In this article, we analyze the spread of the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) along the routes of international travel, both by air and by sea. Pitfalls of various screening methods used at the airports and the importance of optimal aircraft ventilation are discussed. Also, we suggest measures that can be taken to reduce the risk of transmission associated with air travel.

Selective photocatalytic oxidation of 3-pyridinemethanol on platinized acid/base modified TiO2

2021

TiO2 catalysts, modified with acidic or alkaline solutions and then platinized, were used for the partial photocatalytic oxidation of 3-pyridinemethanol to 3-pyridinemethanal and vitamin B-3 under environmentally friendly conditions. The reaction took place in water under UVA light and air oxygen. Catalysts were characterized by TEM, photoluminescence, DRIFT-IR, Raman, DRS, XPS, and photocurrent measurements. The photocatalytic activity results show that Pt loading of untreated samples leads to a significant activity improvement (hence product yield) as much as acid and alkaline treatments do. Moreover, the alkaline treated TiO2 samples exhibit a further increase in activity after loading w…

Burrows Wheeler Transform on a Large Scale: Algorithms Implemented in Apache Spark

2021

With the rapid growth of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) technologies, large amounts of "omics" data are daily collected and need to be processed. Indexing and compressing large sequences datasets are some of the most important tasks in this context. Here we propose algorithms for the computation of Burrows Wheeler transform relying on Big Data technologies, i.e., Apache Spark and Hadoop. Our algorithms are the first ones that distribute the index computation and not only the input dataset, allowing to fully benefit of the available cloud resources.

Future Projection of precipitation changes in the Júcar and Segura River Basins (Iberian Peninsula) by CMIP5 GCMs Local Downscaling

2021

The basins of the Júcar and Segura rivers, on the Mediterranean coast of the Iberian Peninsula, present a special water problem and are of particular interest regarding climate change. These basins are very vulnerable to a possible scenario of decreasing water resources. Recent studies on historic rainfall since 1955 have indicated an ongoing loss of precipitation in their headwaters, especially in the case of the Júcar river. The aim of the present study is to perform climate projections for the precipitation variable for several future periods (2021–2040, 2051–2070, 2081–2100) and emission scenarios (RCPs 4.5, 8.5) within the Júcar and Segura River Basin authorities. For this purpose, a s…

Improving estimation of distribution genetic programming with novelty initialization

2021

Estimation of distribution genetic programming (EDA-GP) replaces the standard variation operations of genetic programming (GP) by learning and sampling from a probabilistic model. Unfortunately, many EDA-GP approaches suffer from a rapidly decreasing population diversity which often leads to premature convergence. However, novelty search, an approach that searches for novel solutions to cover sparse areas of the search space, can be used for generating diverse initial populations. In this work, we propose novelty initialization and test this new method on a generalization of the royal tree problem and compare its performance to ramped half-and-half (RHH) using a recent EDA-GP approach. We f…

Model-free modelling of nonlinear pulse shaping in optical fibres

2021

International audience; Machine learning is transforming the scientific landscape, with the use of advanced algorithmic tools in data analysis yielding new insights into many areas of fundamental and applied science. Photonics is no exception, and machine-learning methods have been applied in a variety of ways to optimise and analyse the output of optical fibre systems. In parallel with these developments, pulse shaping based on nonlinear propagation effects in optical fibres has developed into a remarkable tool to tailor the spectral and temporal content of light signals, leading to the generation of a large variety of optical waveforms. Yet, due to the typically large number of degrees of fre…

A performative paradigm for post-qualitative inquiry

2021

In this article, the authors explore and contribute to producing a performative research paradigm where post-qualitative as well as artistic research might dwell and breathe. Entering a thread of discussion that started with Haseman’s A manifesto for performative research in 2006, and building on their own friction-led research processes at the edges of qualitative research, the authors plug in with performativity, non-representational theories and methodologies, post-qualitative inquiry and post approaches. A performative paradigm for post-qualitative inquiry is proposed, where knowledge is viewed as knowledge-in-becoming as the constant creation of difference through researcher entanglem…

Robust Lanthanoid Picolinate-Based Coordination Polymers for Luminescence and Sensing Applications

2021

Picolinate-based segmented dianionic ligands L12– (5-((4-carboxyphenyl)ethynyl)picolinate) and L22– (5,5′-(ethyne-1,2-diyl)dipicolinate) have been used in the synthesis of the highly robust and luminescent europium(III) coordination polymers [(CH3)2NH2][Eu(H2O)2(L1)2] (1) and [(CH3)2NH2][Eu(L2)2]·H2O·CH3COOH (2). Both 1 and 2 exhibit high selectivity for detection of nitroaromatic compounds since they act as quenchers of the Eu3+ emission. Stern–Volmer plots, using nitrobenzene as a quencher, yielded values of KSV = 150 M–1 and 160 M–1 for 1 and 2, respectively. Luminescence studies in the presence of different metal ions indicate a high selectivity for Fe3+ detection, with KSV values of 47…

On sampling error in evolutionary algorithms

2021

The initial population in evolutionary algorithms (EAs) should form a representative sample of all possible solutions (the search space). While large populations accurately approximate the distribution of possible solutions, small populations tend to incorporate a sampling error. A low sampling error at initialization is necessary (but not sufficient) for a reliable search since a low sampling error reduces the overall random variations in a random sample. For this reason, we have recently presented a model to determine a minimum initial population size so that the sampling error is lower than a threshold, given a confidence level. Our model allows practitioners of, for example, genetic pro…

Using knowledge of human-generated code to bias the search in program synthesis with grammatical evolution

2021

Recent studies show that program synthesis with GE produces code that has different structure compared to human-generated code, e.g., loops and conditions are hardly used. In this article, we extract knowledge from human-generated code to guide evolutionary search. We use a large code-corpus that was mined from the open software repository service GitHub and measure software metrics and properties describing the code-base. We use this knowledge to guide the search by incorporating a new selection scheme. Our new selection scheme favors programs that are structurally similar to the programs in the GitHub code-base. We find noticeable evidence that software metrics can help in guiding evoluti…

Artifacts and Errors in Cross-Spectrum Phase Noise Measurements : Invited lecture

2021

Inserting an attenuator between the oscillator under test and the phase noise analyzer, one expects that the white phase noise increases monotonically with the attenuation. By contrast, we observe that with some oscillators the white noise has sharp minimum for a given value of the attenuation, which clearly indicates problem. With other oscillators, it increases monotonically with the attenuation, but the values are not consistent with the thermal energy introduced by the attenuator. In both cases artifacts are present, which takes the form of a sharp notch in the spectrum, occurring where the white FM noise crosses the white PM noise. Such anomalous behavior is the tip of the iceberg, and…

Cathodic Corrosion of Metal Electrodes—How to Prevent It in Electroorganic Synthesis

2021

The critical aspects of the corrosion of metal electrodes in cathodic reductions are covered. We discuss the involved mechanisms including alloying with alkali metals, cathodic etching in aqueous and aprotic media, and formation of metal hydrides and organometallics. Successful approaches that have been implemented to suppress cathodic corrosion are reviewed. We present several examples from electroorganic synthesis where the clever use of alloys instead of soft neat heavy metals and the application of protective cationic additives have allowed to successfully exploit these materials as cathodes. Because of the high overpotential for the hydrogen evolution reaction, such cathodes can contri…

Determination of phosphorus compounds in plant tissues: from colourimetry to advanced instrumental analytical chemistry

2021

AbstractAlthough the spectrum of effective methods and techniques that allow determination of inorganic or total phosphorus is impressive, more precise analysis of these substances in plant tissues is not a routine or trivial task. The complexity of chemical composition of plant tissues treated as the analytical matrices is thought to be the main cause why there is no one answer, how appropriate phosphorus compounds may be determined qualitatively and quantitatively. Even if more advanced spectrophotometric measurements and classical variants of absorption (FAAS) or emission (ICP-AES/ ICP-OES) spectrometry techniques are used, it is necessary at first to isolate various forms of phosphorus …

Online prevention programmes for university students: stakeholder perspectives from six European countries

2021

Abstract Background Students beginning university are at a heightened risk for developing mental health disorders. Online prevention and early intervention programmes targeting mental health have the potential to reduce this risk, however, previous research has shown uptake to be rather poor. Understanding university stakeholders’ (e.g. governing level and delivery staff [DS] and students) views and attitudes towards such online prevention programmes could help with their development, implementation and dissemination within university settings. Methods Semi-structured interviews, focus groups and online surveys were completed with staff at a governing level, university students and DS (i.e.…
