Verifying the predicted risk of extinction based on ecological characteristics

2021

Red List status of species should reflect species extinction risk. Because data are limited and species response has a time lag, species may be threatened by extinction even if they are not Red‐Listed. The ability to predict species risk of extinction from ecological characteristics holds promises for proactively targeting conservation measures to species at high risk. In 2005, the risk of extinction from ecological characteristics was predicted for 81 species of Finnish butterflies. Now, after 15 years and two additional national Red List assessments, these predictions are verified. Species with a higher risk of extinction according to the original ecological extinction risk rank (EERR) ha…

Tourism development from disaster capitalism.

2021

This research note focuses on the impact of tourism development from disaster capitalism as expressed by post-disaster land grabs and forced population displacement. Case studies highlighted are India, Thailand and Sri Lanka following the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami; Honduras after Hurricane Mitch in 1998; and Barbuda following Hurricane Irma in 2017, demonstrating how disaster capitalism continues to be in play. The examples draw on disaster research to show how tourism development from disaster capitalism leads to more disasters. Long-standing disaster research can assist tourism researchers in identifying how to counter harmful post-disaster tourism development.

Melanotic Oncocytic Metaplasia of the Nasopharynx: An Unusual Case Report

2021

Introduction: Melanotic oncocytic metaplasia of the nasopharynx is an uncommon disease, usually asymptomatic, that could be misdiagnosed for melanoma, because of its macroscopic features. For this reason, is necessary to know it thoroughly and to take it into account in the differential diagnosis.   Case Report: A 69-year-old Italian woman presented to our Otorhinolaryngology Clinic with a 1-month history of sore throat. She has been a smoker for several years. During the nasopharyngoscopic examination, grey-brown, irregular and slightly elevated lesions, measuring few millimetres, were found near the right Eustachian tube opening. The preliminary diagnostic hypothesis was malignant disease…

Estimating flow resistance in steep slope rills

2021

Recent research recognized that the slope of 18% can be used to distinguish between the ‘gentle slope’ case and that of ‘steep slope’ for the detected differences in hydraulic variables (flow depth, velocity, Reynolds number, Froude number) and those representatives of sediment transport (flow transport capacity, actual sediment load). In this paper, using previous measurements carried out in mobile bed rills and flume experiments characterized by steep slopes (i.e., slope greater than or equal to 18%), a theoretical rill flow resistance equation to estimate the Darcy-Weisbach friction factor is tested. The main aim is to deduce a relationship between the velocity profile parameter Γ, the c…

Study Crafting and Self-Undermining in Higher Education Students: A Weekly Diary Study on the Antecedents.

2021

The aim of the current study is to validate the adaptation of the job demands–resources theory to the study context. In addition, we introduce the concepts study crafting and self-undermining to the study demands–resources framework by examining the mediating role of engagement and exhaustion in the relationship between study characteristics and study crafting and self-undermining. Over four consecutive weeks, 205 higher education students answered a questionnaire about their weekly study demands and resources, their well-being (i.e., engagement, exhaustion), and their study crafting and self-undermining behaviors. Multilevel structural equation modeling (controlling for autoregressors of m…

Expectations for supporting student engagement with learning analytics : an academic path perspective

2021

There has been a growing interest in higher education to explore how learning analytics (LA) could be used to support student engagement. Providing actionable feedback with LA for students is an emerging area of research. Previous studies have commonly focused on course-level aspects of supporting engagement with LA, but students' perspectives have received limited attention. This study analyzed pre-service teachers’ needs and expectations for LA to support student engagement on the academic path level, which means observing the continuum of study periods and academic years. Qualitative content analysis was conducted for video-recorded student small-group conversations to analyze in-depth h…

FLOW DIVERTER DEVICE IN THE ACUTE SETTING OF RUPTURED BLISTER LIKE ANEURYSM: A CASE REPORT

2021

Blister-like aneurysms (BLA) are a rare half-dome-shaped aneurysm, with a broad-based appearance, originating more often from a non-branching site of the supraclinoid internal carotid artery (ICA). They are sometimes difficult to recognize due to their morphological changes and high tendency to rupture. BLAs are often undiagnosed and may be detected only after repeated angiograms in the case of acute subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). BLA are life-threatening and no consensus has so far been reached on the best management strategy. We describe a patient with a BLA in the left ICA successfully treated by flow-diverting device using intraoperative abciximab bolus, with successful results. Recentl…

How Are Practice and Performance Related? Development of Reading From Age 5 to 15

2021

Does reading a lot lead to better reading skills, or does reading a lot follow from high initial reading skills? The authors present a longitudinal study of how much children choose to read and how well they decode and comprehend texts. This is the first study to examine the codevelopment of print exposure with both fluency and comprehension throughout childhood using autocorrelations. Print exposure was operationalized as children’s amount of independent reading for pleasure. Two hundred children were followed from age 5 to age 15. Print exposure was assessed at ages 5, 7, 8, 9, and 13. Prereading skills were tested at age 5 and reading skills at ages 7, 8, 9, 14, and 15 (the latter with t…

Ketogenic diet, physical activity, and hypertension—a narrative review

2021

Several studies link cardiovascular diseases (CVD) with unhealthy lifestyles (unhealthy dietary habits, alcohol consumption, smoking, and low levels of physical activity). Therefore, the strong need for CVD prevention may be pursued through an improved control of CVD risk factors (impaired lipid and glycemic profiles, high blood pressure, and obesity), which is achievable through an overall intervention aimed to favor a healthy lifestyle. Focusing on diet, different recommendations emphasize the need to increase or avoid consumption of entire classes of food, with only partly known and only partly foreseeable consequences on the overall level of health. In recent years, the ketogenic diet (…

System Dynamics in the Predictive Analytics of Container Freight Rates

2021

This study proposes a two-tier cross-validation and backtesting procedure, including expanding and rolling-window test metrics in predictive analytics of container freight rates by utilizing the system dynamics approach. The study utilized system dynamics to represent the nonlinear complex structure of container freight rates for predictive analytics and performed univariate and multivariate time-series analysis as benchmarks of the conventional approach. In particular, the China containerized freight index (CCFI) has been investigated through various parametric methodologies (both conventional time-series and system dynamics approaches). This study follows a strict validation process cons…

The urban revitalization of the coastal tourist destinations: An alternative for the Valencian Mediterranean tourist municipalities

2021

Survival in Immunocompromised Patients Ultimately Requiring Invasive Mechanical Ventilation: A Pooled Individual Patient Data Analysis

2021

Rationale: Acute respiratory failure (ARF) is associated with high mortality in immunocompromised patients, particularly when invasive mechanical ventilation is needed. Therefore, noninvasive oxygenation/ventilation strategies have been developed to avoid intubation, with uncertain impact on mortality, especially when intubation is delayed. Objectives: We sought to report trends of survival over time in immunocompromised patients receiving invasive mechanical ventilation. The impact of delayed intubation after failure of noninvasive strategies was also assessed. Methods: Systematic review and meta-analysis using individual data (IPD) of studies which focused on immunocompromised adult patie…

Introduzione.

Abstract Because of the complexity of the design of a Fusion Power Plant like the EU DEMOnstration power plant the study of the plant layout must proceed in parallel with the design of the major systems. This is necessary to ensure that the design of the plant incorporates from the very beginning sound considerations on: • Safety and licensing, • Personnel security in context with operation and maintenance, • Adequate plant availability, and • Safe performance operation including delivery of few hundred MW net electric power to the electrical grid. Though it is a process of trial and change that follows the design evolution, this approach allows a better and continuous control of the numero…

A Methodology for Protection of Trees Against Lightning Strikes as a Measure to Prevent Fires and Loss of Human Life

2021

Some regions may be characterized by a very low annual lightning ground flash density, and yet lightning strikes seem to have been in those areas the cause of widespread wildfires in forested areas. Due to global climate change, these occurrences seem to be an increasing threat. In this paper, the authors discuss the withstand capability of trees against lightning and introduce the criteria for the deployment of tree lightning protection systems (TLPS) to protect forested areas, where deemed necessary by the tree risk assessment. This work analytically identifies the critical trunk radius of the tree below which the tree may explode in the case of a lightning strike and ignite the surroundi…

P–543 Inhibition of cell proliferation and extracellular matrix formation in human uterine leiomyomas by 5-aza–2’-deoxycitidine via Wnt/ β-catenin pa…

2021

Abstract Study question Is DNA methylation reversion through DNA methyltransferases (DNMT) inhibitors, such as 5-aza–2’-deoxycitidine, a potential therapeutic option for treatment of patients with uterine leiomyomas (UL)? Summary answer 5-aza–2’-deoxycitidine reduces proliferation and extracellular matrix (ECM) formation by inhibition of Wnt/ β-catenin pathway on UL cells, suggesting DNMT inhibitors as an option to treat UL. What is known already: UL is a multifactorial disease with an unclear pathogenesis and inaccurate treatment. Aberrant DNA methylation have been found in UL compared to myometrium (MM) tissue, showing hypermethylation of tumor suppressor genes, which contributes to the d…

An analysis of Italian university students' performance through segmented regression models: gender differences in STEM courses

2021

AbstractThis paper investigates gender differences in university performances in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) courses in Italy, proposing a novel application through the segmented regression models. The analysis concerns freshmen students enrolled at a 3-year STEM degree in Italian universities in the last decade, with a focus on the relationship between the number of university credits earned during the first year (a good predictor of the regularity of the career) and the probability of getting the bachelor degree within 4 years. Data is provided by the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MIUR). Our analysis confirms that first-year performance is strong…

Decoupling on the Wiener Space, Related Besov Spaces, and Applications to BSDEs

2021

We introduce a decoupling method on the Wiener space to define a wide class of anisotropic Besov spaces. The decoupling method is based on a general distributional approach and not restricted to the Wiener space. The class of Besov spaces we introduce contains the traditional isotropic Besov spaces obtained by the real interpolation method, but also new spaces that are designed to investigate backwards stochastic differential equations (BSDEs). As examples we discuss the Besov regularity (in the sense of our spaces) of forward diffusions and local times. It is shown that among our newly introduced Besov spaces there are spaces that characterize quantitative properties of directional derivat…

Higgs-like spectator field as the origin of structure

2021

We show that the observed primordial perturbations can be entirely sourced by a light spectator scalar field with a quartic potential, akin to the Higgs boson, provided that the field is sufficiently displaced from vacuum during inflation. The framework relies on the indirect modulation of reheating, which is implemented without any direct coupling between the spectator field and the inflaton and does not require non-renormalisable interactions. The scenario gives rise to local non-Gaussianity with $f_{\rm NL}\simeq 5$ as the typical signal. As an example model where the indirect modulation mechanism is realised for the Higgs boson, we study the Standard Model extended with right-handed neu…

2021

Abstract We describe a challenging case of patient with metallo-beta-lactamase-producing Pseudomonas aeruginosa sternal osteomyelitis following aortic valve replacement with biological prosthesis. The strain exhibited a multidrug-resistance phenotype carrying the blaVIM-1 gene and belonged to the high-risk clone sequence type ST235. The patient was successfully treated with surgical debridement plus antibiotic therapy with ceftazidime/avibactam, aztreonam, and amikacin. Time-kill curves showed that this triple antibiotic combination at 1 × MIC was strongly synergic after 8 h, achieving 99.9% killing and maintaining this until 48 h.

Why retail investors traded equity during the pandemic? An application of artificial neural networks to examine behavioral biases

2021

Behavioral biases are known to influence the investment decisions of retail investors. Indeed, extant research has revealed interesting findings in this regard. However, the literature on the impact of these biases on millennials' trading activity, particularly during a health crisis like the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the equity recommendation intentions of such investors, is limited. The present study addressed these gaps by investigating the influence of eight behavioral biases: overconfidence and self-attribution, over-optimism, hindsight, representativeness, anchoring, loss aversion, mental accounting, and herding on the trading activity and recommendation intentions of millennials …

New high-sensitivity searches for neutrons converting into antineutrons and/or sterile neutrons at the HIBEAM/NNBAR experiment at the European Spalla…

2021

Abstract The violation of baryon number, B , is an essential ingredient for the preferential creation of matter over antimatter needed to account for the observed baryon asymmetry in the Universe. However, such a process has yet to be experimentally observed. The HIBEAM/NNBAR program is a proposed two-stage experiment at the European Spallation Source to search for baryon number violation. The program will include high-sensitivity searches for processes that violate baryon number by one or two units: free neutron–antineutron oscillation ( n → n ̄ ) via mixing, neutron–antineutron oscillation via regeneration from a sterile neutron state ( n → [ n ′ , n ̄ ′ ] → n ̄ ), and neutron disappearan…

P–074 Chromatin Maturity Index (CMI) in unfixed and live spermatozoa and Aniline Blue (AB) stained as an additional evaluation parameter in idiopathi…

2021

Abstract Study question To investigate whether idiopathic male infertility may be due to the presence of histones in motile spermatozoa using a modified AB staining protocol. Summary answer No correlation between CMI in live motile spermatozoa, DNA Fragmentation Index (DFI) and other conventional seminal parameters were found in male infertile patients. What is known already The AB stain discriminates between lysine-rich histones and arginine/cysteine-rich protamines. Transition from histones to protamines during spermatogenesis remodels chromatin packaging and abnormalities in the substitution of those proteins maybe interfere with seminal parameters and affect male infertility. The correl…

PROPOSTA DI RIGENERAZIONE E GESTIONE DEGLI SPAZI PUBBLICI NELLA CITTÀ DI KOS, GRECIA

2021

The theme falls within the proposals of strategies, tools and forms of housing and urban regeneration and tackles the case of the city of Kos. There currently the recovery and the enhancement of public space in the city is being attempted, and specifically of those urban areas which have long suffered very strong exploitation pressure by private interests as a result of tourism.

Effects of nifedipine on renal and cardiovascular responses to neuropeptide y in anesthetized rats

2021

Neuropeptide Y (NPY) acts via multiple receptor subtypes termed Y1, Y2 and Y5. While Y1 receptor-mediated effects, e.g., in the vasculature, are often sensitive to inhibitors of L-type Ca2+ channels such as nifedipine, little is known about the role of such channels in Y5-mediated effects such as diuresis and natriuresis. Therefore, we explored whether nifedipine affects NPY-induced diuresis and natriuresis. After pre-treatment with nifedipine or vehicle, anesthetized rats received infusions or bolus injections of NPY. Infusion NPY (1 µg/kg/min) increased diuresis and natriuresis, and this was attenuated by intraperitoneal injection of nifedipine (3 µg/kg). Concomitant decreases in heart ra…
