Impact of mobility restrictions on active aging; cross-sectional associations and longitudinal changes parallel to COVID-19 restrictions

2021

Background: Meaningful activities can be done in or around home, but opportunities for participation and active aging decrease when moving in smaller areas. Active aging refers to having an active approach to life in line with one's goals, ability and opportunities. In adults over 75 years with different baseline neighborhood mobility levels, we studied active aging scores two years prior to and amid COVID-19, when governments restricted mobility of residents to slow the COVID-19 outbreak. Methods: AGNES cohort data were collected in 2017-2018 and spring 2020. Individuals were queried about their will, ability, and opportunity, and extent of doing 17 activities, and subsequently, item, comp…

A substantial body of research has shown worse health conditions for East- vs. West-Germany in the wake of reunification. In the present study, we investigate how these differences between the two formerly divided regions developed and what maintains them. Specifically, we consider the associations between health status, income satisfaction, and health-related locus of control. In a quasi-experimental and longitudinal study design, we are particularly interested in the differences between individuals who stayed in East-Germany and those who were born in the East but migrated to West-Germany. To this end, we examined data from seven waves of the Saxony Longitudinal Study (2003–2009). Specifi…

The Reception of Don Chisciotte in Italy About Three Recent Editions

2021

Within the research promoted by the collection “Recreaciones Quijotescas en Europa” whose aim is to disseminate critical editions and translations of rewritings or reassessments of Quijote by Miguel de Cervantes, three librettos of Italian operas from the first half of the 18th century have been published. The operas were performed at the Viennese court of Charles VI, where the poets Apostolo Zeno and Pietro Pariati, authors of the libretto Don Quixote in Sierra Morena, and Claudio Pasquini, author of Don Quixote in court of the Duchess and Sancio Panza governor of the island Barattaria, had been invited to work. In the essays preceding these editions, the specialists involved in the resear…

Gravitational-wave parameter inference using Deep Learning

2021

We explore machine learning methods to detect gravitational waves (GW) from binary black hole (BBH) mergers using deep learning (DL) algorithms. The DL networks are trained with gravitational waveforms obtained from BBH mergers with component masses randomly sampled in the range from 5 to 100 solar masses and luminosity distances from 100 Mpc to, at least, 2000 Mpc. The GW signal waveforms are injected in public data from the O2 run of the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo detectors, in time windows that do not coincide with those of known detected signals, and the data from each detector in the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo network is combined into a unique RGB image. We show that a clas…

A Personal LPWAN Remote Monitoring System

2021

Firefighters are equipped with an immobility detector device also called the Personal Alert Safety System (PASS) that is integrated into the user's Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA). If a firefighter remains motionless for a certain period of time, a loud audible alert is triggered to notify the Firefighter Assist and Search Team (FAST) deployed in the area of intervention that the wearer of the PASS device is in trouble and in need of rescue. However, this device is not reliable enough since it triggers frequently false positives which lead to developing a tolerance for sounding alarms among the crew. As a consequence, they do not seem to be concerned about it as they should and th…

Convencer mirando a cámara: el minuto de oro de los debates electorales como refugio de condensación retórica

2021

This paper studies the final statements (“golden minutes”) of televised electoral debates in Spain between 1993 and 2019. The methodology is adjusted to the cognitive analysis of discourse, analyzing three pragmatic indicators that could reveal an evolution in three stages of Spanish politics: the bipartisan phase (1993-2011), an adjustment phase (2011-2015) and a multiparty phase (2015- 2019). The discursive spaces dependent on the predicative strategy, the predominant illocutionary force, and the use of superstructures are analyzed. It is concluded that, for the three phases, the variables referring to the use of enunciative persons (which points to the introduction of the ethos of discou…

We report on the thermodynamic, structural, and dynamic properties of a recently proposed deep eutectic solvent, formed by choline acetate (ChAc) and urea (U) at the stoichiometric ratio 1:2, hereinafter indicated as ChAc:U. Although the crystalline phase melts at 36–38 °C depending on the heating rate, ChAc:U can be easily supercooled at sub-ambient conditions, thus maintaining at the liquid state, with a glass–liquid transition at about −50 °C. Synchrotron high energy x-ray scattering experiments provide the experimental data for supporting a reverse Monte Carlo analysis to extract structural information at the atomistic level. This exploration of the liquid structure of ChAc:U reveals th…

Metaphorical GIFs and humour online: the case of “when” posts on Tumblr

2021

International audience; “When” posts have now become a staple of microblogging platforms such as Twitter, Tumblr or Facebook. They consist of two things: a verbal caption opening with “When” followed by an assertive clause describing a situation of life on the one hand, and a static or moving image presenting a visual elaboration of the situation described in the caption on the other hand. “When” posts rely on the striking relationship between what the caption describes and what the image shows. In the case of the posts selected for the present study, this relationship is metaphorical: the caption and the image, which are juxtaposed without mediation, act respectively as a verbal tenor and …

Populist Words Speak Louder? Ideology-Inconsistent Personalization and Voting for Populist Candidates

2021

Abstract The private background of populist politicians oftentimes seemingly contradicts the populist ideology—which can be taken up in political communication. Using two experiments (nStudy 1 = 734; nStudy 2 = 568), we investigate the effects of such ideology-inconsistent personalization on the evaluation of and voting for a populist candidate. We manipulate the politician’s localness and social class (Study 1) and traditionalism in family life (Study 2). Results reveal a number of effects on candidate evaluation which translated into voting intentions. An upper-class background of the populist politician yielded negative effects, but less so among populist voters. However, references to a…

Alcohol and early mortality (before 65 years) in the ‘Seguimiento Universidad de Navarra’ (SUN) cohort: does any level reduce mortality?

2021

AbstractThe aim of this study was to assess the association between alcohol intake and premature mortality (younger than 65 years) and to explore the effect of potential alcohol underreporting by heavy drinkers. We followed-up 20 272 university graduates. Four categories of alcohol intake were considered (abstainer, light, moderate and heavy consumption). Repeated measurements of alcohol intake and updated information on confounders were used in time-dependent Cox models. Potential underreporting of alcohol intake by some heavy drinkers (likely misclassified as light or moderate drinkers) was explicitly addressed in an attempt to correct potential underreporting by using indirect informatio…

Lambda+, the renewal of the Lambda Architecture: Category Theory to the rescue

2021

Designing software architectures for Big Data is a complex task that has to take into consideration multiple parameters, such as the expected functionalities, the properties that are untradeable, or the suitable technologies. Patterns are abstractions that guide the design of architectures to reach the requirements. One of the famous patterns is the Lambda Architecture, which proposes real-time computations with correctness and fault-tolerance guarantees. But the Lambda has also been highly criticized, mostly because of its complexity and because the real-time and correctness properties are each effective in a different layer but not in the overall architecture. Furthermore, its use cases a…

Recent and new taxonomic acquisitions in some native genera of Asteraceae from southern Italy and Sicily

2021

After a brief review of the recent acquisition in some native genera of family Asteraceae from southern Italy and Sicily, a new endemic species of Anthemis (sect. Hiorthia) is described from Sicily and named Anthemis parlatoreana. The locus classicus of the new taxon, falling in the NW Tyrrhenian coast of the island (Castellammare del Golfo, Trapani), coincides with that of Ptilostemon greuteri, another endemic very rare species of the Sicilian flora. Data on the morphology, distribution, ecology and conservation status of the new species are provided. The taxonomic relationships with the other Sicilian taxa of the same section, in particular A. cupaniana, are also analyzed. The simultaneou…

2021

International audience; The goal of this study was to introduce an effective visible-light induced photocatalytic system with a good ability for photocatalytic oxidative desulfurization (PODS) and denitrogenation (PODN) using molecular oxygen (O2) as an oxidant. In this regard, tungestophosphoric acid (PW12) was supported onto cerium-doped NH2-UiO-66 (PW12/Ce-NUiO-66) and employed for the photo-oxidation of dibenzothiophene (DBT) and quinoline (Qu). Herein, using cerium (Ce) as a “mediator” facilitated the separation of charge carriers, while NH2-UiO-66 remarkably enhanced the surface area with plentiful adsorption sites and shifted the adsorption edge of PW12to the visible region. Global CHIRPS MCWD (Maximum Cumulative Water Deficit) Dataset

2021

Global CHIRPS MCWD Dataset The MCWD (Maximum Cumulative Water Deficit) is a measure of drought severity, which corresponds to the maximum value of the monthly accumulated water deficit reached for each pixel within the year. The MCWD is a useful indicator of meteorologically induced water stress without taking into account local soil conditions and plant adaptations, which are poorly understood in Amazonia. The full method of MCWD is described in Aragão et al. (2007; https://doi.org/10.1029/2006GL028946). Detail about CHIRPS (Rainfall Estimates from Rain Gauge and Satellite Observations) can be found in Funk et al. (2015; https://doi.org/10.1038/sdata.2015.66). Coverage: Spanning 5…

This paper examines evidential hashtags on Twitter. The analyzed hashtags contain constructions of the verb decir (‘to say’) that are preceded by the hash symbol (e.g., #dicen, #sedice, #esodicen, #dicenporahí), which have not been analyzed from the perspective of evidentiality. An exploratory and qualitative study was performed using a sample of 94 tweets that were published over six months. The analysis addresses structural and semantic-pragmatic parameters. According to the results of the analysis, evidential hashtags can transmit reportative, quotative and folklore evidentiality. Furthermore, the evidential meaning of the hashtags is accompanied by pragmatic functions such as attenuatio…

Conversion of the Sensor Kinase DcuS to the Fumarate Sensitive State by Interaction of the Bifunctional Transporter DctA at the TM2/PAS

2021

The membrane-bound C4-dicarboxylate (C4DC) sensor kinase DcuS of Escherichia coli typically forms a protein complex with the C4DC transporter DctA. The DctA × DcuS complex is able to respond to C4DCs, whereas DcuS without DctA is in the permanent ON state. In DctA, the C-terminal helix 8b (H8b) serves as the site for interaction with DcuS. Here the interaction site in DcuS and the related structural and functional adaptation in DcuS were determined. The Linker connecting transmembrane helix 2 (TM2) and the cytosolic PASC (Per-ARNT-SIM) domain of DcuS, was identified as the major site for interaction with DctA-H8b by in vivo interaction studies. The Linker is known to convert the piston-type…

How Idioms Are Recognized when Individuals Are “Thrown Off the Track”, “Off the Rack” or “Off the Path”: A Decision Time Experiment in Healthy Volunt…

2021

Figurative elements in language have their own particularities, including words that deviate from their generally accepted definition to amplify our language or to paraphrase an issue. It is still unclear how individuals process idioms that are figurative or ambiguous, especially when they additionally become distracted by modified idioms that are similar in appearance. In our study, 47 healthy adults (mean age of 27.3 years, SD = 2.9) participated in a decision time experiment to determine how participants recognize well-formed, genuine German idioms alongside certain idiom modifications. All participants were initially exposed to a prime on a screen. Then, they had to detect the target id…

The Logical Intelligence Enhancement Program (LIEP) for the improvement of cognitive abilities. Premilinary findings

2021

The Logical Intelligence Enhancement Program (LIEP) is a program specifically addressed to students aging from 6 to 12. It consists of a series of exercises of different types (verbal inferences, understanding of graphs and tables, series of digits, etc.) and increasing difficulty, properly devised to activate and train the abilities of logical reasoning. Hopefully, such an enhancement should result in an improvement of academic achievements, especially in low proficiency learner students. Here we report on a study carried out on a large cohort of fifth-grade students. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of LIEP in improving students’ cognitive abilities and abstract reasoning.

Contexto editorial, cultural y socio-político de la edición príncipe de la «Historia de la doncella Teodor» (Toledo: Pedro Hagenbach, 1500-1501)

2021

The material analysis of the only surviving copy of the editio princeps of the Historia de la doncella Teodor allows us to date it back to the incunabula era and to attribute its printing to Pedro Hagenbach’s workshop. The close relationship amongst Hagenbach’s workshop, the reformist project of Archbishop Cisneros, and the interests of the Catholic Monarchs sets an editorial and cultural context that supports the adaptation of Teodor to the printing press. This work perfectly agreed with the thematic and ideological guidelines for the renewal of Christian customs and values. The forceful religious and intellectual imposition of the young and learned slave, turned into a “fijadalgo” in the …

Persistence of the Z=28 shell gap in A=75 isobars: Identification of a possible (1/2−) μs isomer in Co75 and β decay to Ni75

2021

Background: The evolution of shell structure around doubly-magic exotic nuclei is of great interest in nuclear physics and astrophysics. In the `south-west' region of $^{78}$Ni, the development of deformation might trigger a major shift in our understanding of explosive nucleosynthesis. To this end, new spectroscopic information on key close-lying nuclei is very valuable. Purpose: We intend to measure the isomeric and $\beta$ decay of $^{75}$Co, with one proton- and two neutron-holes relative to $^{78}$Ni, to access new nuclear structure information in $^{75}$Co and its $\beta$-decay daughters $^{75}$Ni and $^{74}$Ni. Zn-Enhanced Asp-Rich Antimicrobial Peptides N-Terminal Coordination by Zn(II) and Cu(II), Which Distinguishes Cu(II) Binding to Different Peptides

2021

The antimicrobial activity of surfactant-associated anionic peptides (SAAPs), which are isolated from the ovine pulmonary surfactant and are selective against the ovine pathogen Mannheimia haemolytica, is strongly enhanced in the presence of Zn(II) ions. Both calorimetry and ITC measurements show that the unique Asp-only peptide SAAP3 (DDDDDDD) and its analogs SAAP2 (GDDDDDD) and SAAP6 (GADDDDD) have a similar micromolar affinity for Zn(II), which binds to the N-terminal amine and Asp carboxylates in a net entropically-driven process. All three peptides also bind Cu(II) with a net entropically-driven process but with higher affinity than they bind Zn(II) and coordination that involves the N…

Continuous energy-efficient monitoring model for mobile ad hoc networks

2021

The monitoring of mobile ad hoc networks is an observation task that consists of analysing the operational status of these networks while evaluating their functionalities. In order to allow the whole network and applications to work properly, the monitoring task has become of considerable importance. It must be carried out in real-time by performing measurements, logs, configurations, etc. However, achieving continuous energy-efficient monitoring in mobile wireless networks is very challenging considering the environment features as well as the unpredictable behavior of the participating nodes. This paper outlines the challenges of continuous energy-efficient monitoring over mobile ad hoc n…
