Food allergies among children as a social and medical problem
2021
Background: In recent years, food allergy has been diagnosed more frequently in children and adolescents. The environment is more toxic and chemical substances that are additives to food dominate the diet. Also, a changing lifestyle, exposure to stress, and a poorly balanced diet may have an impact on the occurrence of allergies. In society, more children suffer from food allergies than adults, and food allergies are becoming an increasingly serious social and medical problem. Aim of the study: The aim of this study is to review the subject of food allergies in children, with a focus on the social and medical problems associated with this condition. Material and methods: 31 studies, publish…
Monochromatic Long-Period Seismicity Prior to the 2012 Earthquake Swarm at Little Sitkin Volcano, Alaska
2021
Detection of the earliest stages of unrest is one of the most challenging and yet critically needed aspects of volcano monitoring. We investigate a sequence of five unusual long-period (LP) earthquakes that occurred in the days prior to the onset of a months-long volcano-tectonic (VT) earthquake swarm beneath Little Sitkin volcano in the Aleutian Islands during late 2012. The long-period earthquakes had two distinctive characteristics: their signals were dominated by a monochromatic spectral peak at approximately 0.57 Hz and they had impulsive P and S-wave arrivals on a seismometer located on Amchitka Island 80 km to the southeast of the volcano. In each case, the monochromatic earthquakes …

Initially, purified virion particles were characterized with Raman spectroscopy, synchrotron infrared (IR) and AFM-IR. A data set comprising 171 transflection infrared spectra from 29 subjects testing positive for SARS-CoV-2 by RT-qPCR and 28 testing negative, was modeled using Monte Carlo Double Cross Validation with 50 randomized test and model sets. The testing se…
The Reception of Don Chisciotte in Italy About Three Recent Editions
2021
Within the research promoted by the collection “Recreaciones Quijotescas en Europa” whose aim is to disseminate critical editions and translations of rewritings or reassessments of Quijote by Miguel de Cervantes, three librettos of Italian operas from the first half of the 18th century have been published. The operas were performed at the Viennese court of Charles VI, where the poets Apostolo Zeno and Pietro Pariati, authors of the libretto Don Quixote in Sierra Morena, and Claudio Pasquini, author of Don Quixote in court of the Duchess and Sancio Panza governor of the island Barattaria, had been invited to work. In the essays preceding these editions, the specialists involved in the resear…
What matters more in open access journal publishing : Scientific rigor or financial vigor?
2021
Academics and librarians around the world are raising concern about the current state of scholarly journal publishing in that the majority of journals are under the control of five multinational commercial journal publishing companies. Some are advocating for scholars to take back control of scholarly communication, particularly because it is the academics who are supplying and managing most of the content for journals. Open access publishing is one option, but the question of sustainability in funding streams raises concerns. Also the roles of scholarly societies, academic association, and universities in looking for stability in nonprofit journal publishing are discussed.

Influence of domain wall anisotropy on the current-induced hysteresis loop shift for quantification of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction
2021
Using several material systems with various magnitudes of the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), we elucidate a critical influence of domain wall (DW) anisotropy on the current-induced hysteresis loop shift scheme widely employed to determine the magnitude of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya effective field (${H}_{\mathrm{DMI}}$). Taking into account the DW anisotropy in the analysis of the hysteresis loop shift, which has not been included in the original model [Phys. Rev. B 93, 144409 (2016)], we show that it provides quantitative agreement of ${H}_{\mathrm{DMI}}$ with that determined from an asymmetric bubble expansion technique for small DMI material systems. For large DMI sy…
In situ Phenotyping of Grapevine Root System Architecture by 2D or 3D Imaging: Advantages and Limits of Three Cultivation Methods
2021
International audience; The root system plays an essential role in the development and physiology of the plant, as well as in its response to various stresses. However, it is often insufficiently studied, mainly because it is difficult to visualize. For grapevine, a plant of major economic interest, there is a growing need to study the root system, in particular to assess its resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses, understand the decline that may affect it, and identify new ecofriendly production systems. In this context, we have evaluated and compared three distinct growing methods (hydroponics, plane, and cylindric rhizotrons) in order to describe relevant architectural root traits of …
Voltage-Based Droop Control of Electric Vehicles in Distribution Grids under Different Charging Power Levels
2021
If left uncontrolled, electric vehicle charging poses severe challenges to distribution grid operation. Resulting issues are expected to be mitigated by charging control. In particular, voltage-based charging control, by relying only on the local measurements of voltage at the point of connection, provides an autonomous communication-free solution. The controller, attached to the charging equipment, compares the measured voltage to a reference voltage and adapts the charging power using a droop control characteristic. We present a systematic study of the voltage-based droop control method for electric vehicles to establish the usability of the method for all the currently available resident…
A model of Cyber Threat Information Sharing with the Novel Network Topology
2021
The digitized environments are particularly vulnerable to various attacks. In such a situation of a security attack, detecting and responding to attacks require effective actions. One of the most significant ways to improve resilience to security attacks is to obtain accurate and timely situational aspect of the security awareness. The efficient production and utilization of situation information is achieved by sharing information with other actors in the information sharing network quickly and reliably without compromising the confidential information of one's own organization. At the same time, it should also be possible to avoid a flood of irrelevant information in the sharing network, w…

Saving Technologies that are not Used to Save Lives
2021
A hundred years ago in July, thanks to the advancement of medical technology, the first human received the vaccine Bacille Calmette-Guérin—or BCG—to prevent tuberculosis (TB), a disease that killed at least 20% of the European population during the 19th century. Since then, hundreds of millions of lives have been saved by BCG, as well as other vaccinations for dangerous diseases. However, although TB is quite preventable and curable, it remains the leading cause of death from a single infectious agent in the world. It is an example of how humans can invent technologies to improve and save lives but fail to do so because of unevenly distributed resources, lack of media coverage, and other ec…
Afroperipheral indigeneity in Wayde Compton’s The Outer Harbour
2021
Black Canadian writer Wayde Compton’s short story collection The Outer Harbour (2015) is located in the Afroperiphery of British Columbia which stands as a ‘contact zone’ that enables the alliances between Black and Indigenous peoples and also establishes a fecund ground of possibilities to emphasize the way in which crossethnic coalitions and representations reconsider imperial encounters previously ignored. The stories participate in the recent turn in Indigenous studies towards kinship and cross-ethnicity to map out the connected and shared itineraries of Black and Indigenous peoples and re-read Indigeneity in interaction. At the same time, the stories offer a fresh way to revisit Indige…
Validating Habitual and Goal-Directed Decision-Making Performance Online in Healthy Older Adults
2021
Everyday decision-making is supported by a dual-system of control comprised of parallel goal-directed and habitual systems. Over the past decade, the two-stage Markov decision task has become popularized for its ability to dissociate between goal-directed and habitual decision-making. While a handful of studies have implemented decision-making tasks online, only one study has validated the task by comparing in-person and web-based performance on the two-stage task in children and young adults. To date, no study has validated the dissociation of goal-directed and habitual behaviors in older adults online. Here, we implemented and validated a web-based version of the two-stage Markov task usi…
Genome-wide association studies identify 137 genetic loci for DNA methylation biomarkers of aging
2021
Abstract Background Biological aging estimators derived from DNA methylation data are heritable and correlate with morbidity and mortality. Consequently, identification of genetic and environmental contributors to the variation in these measures in populations has become a major goal in the field. Results Leveraging DNA methylation and SNP data from more than 40,000 individuals, we identify 137 genome-wide significant loci, of which 113 are novel, from genome-wide association study (GWAS) meta-analyses of four epigenetic clocks and epigenetic surrogate markers for granulocyte proportions and plasminogen activator inhibitor 1 levels, respectively. We find evidence for shared genetic loci ass…

On Noncoercive (p, q)-Equations
2021
We consider a nonlinear Dirichlet problem driven by a (p, q)-Laplace differential operator (1 < q < p). The reaction is (p - 1)-linear near +/-infinity and the problem is noncoercive. Using variational tools and truncation and comparison techniques together with critical groups, we produce five nontrivial smooth solutions all with sign information and ordered. In the particular case when q = 2, we produce a second nodal solution for a total of six nontrivial smooth solutions all with sign information.

A substantial body of research has shown worse health conditions for East- vs. West-Germany in the wake of reunification. In the present study, we investigate how these differences between the two formerly divided regions developed and what maintains them. Specifically, we consider the associations between health status, income satisfaction, and health-related locus of control. In a quasi-experimental and longitudinal study design, we are particularly interested in the differences between individuals who stayed in East-Germany and those who were born in the East but migrated to West-Germany. To this end, we examined data from seven waves of the Saxony Longitudinal Study (2003–2009). Specifi…
Mobile money and the impact of mobile phone regulatory enforcement among the urban poor in Tanzania
2021
Mobile money provides a tool for survival, particularly in urban conditions shaped by city regulations that make microvending difficult for the poor. An analysis of 165 interviews conducted in two low-income neighborhoods in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania over 8 years demonstrates how interlocked layers of technology and interaction make mobile money services semiformal. I introduce two mobile money-enabled survival strategies: intrahousehold transfers for day-to-day survival (transfers within the same city) and resource safeguarding through kin remittances of start-up capital (home-based subsistence business capital stored for kin access in emergencies). The recent tightening of mobile phone regu…
