Fisheries exploitation can cause genetic changes in heritable traits of targeted stocks. The direction of selective pressure forced by harvest acts typically in reverse to natural selection and selects for explicit life histories, usually for younger and smaller spawners with deprived spawning potential. While the consequences that such selection might have on the population dynamics of a single species are well emphasized, we are just beginning to perceive the variety and severity of its propagating effects within the entire marine food webs and ecosystems. Here, we highlight the potential pathways in which fisheries-induced evolution, driven by size-selective fishing, might resonate throu…

Molecular modeling in cardiovascular pharmacology: Current state of the art and perspectives.

2021

Abstract Molecular modeling in pharmacology is a promising emerging tool for exploring drug interactions with cellular components. Recent advances in molecular simulations, big data analysis, and artificial intelligence (AI) have opened new opportunities for rationalizing drug interactions with their pharmacological targets. Despite the obvious utility and increasing impact of computational approaches, their development is not progressing at the same speed in different fields of pharmacology. Here, we review current in silico techniques used in cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), cardiological drug discovery, and assessment of cardiotoxicity. In silico techniques are paving the way to a new era…

Heterozygous HMGB1 loss-of-function variants are associated with developmental delay and microcephaly

2021

International audience; 13q12.3 microdeletion syndrome is a rare cause of syndromic intellectual disability. Identification and genetic characterization of patients with 13q12.3 microdeletion syndrome continues to expand the phenotypic spectrum associated with it. Previous studies identified four genes within the approximately 300 Kb minimal critical region including two candidate protein coding genes: KATNAL1 and HMGB1. To date, no patients carrying a sequence-level variant or a single gene deletion in HMGB1 or KATNAL1 have been described. Here we report six patients with loss-of-function variants involving HMGB1 and who had phenotypic features similar to the previously described 13q12.3 m…

Emergency Response Model as a part of the Smart Society

2021

Centralized hybrid emergency model with predictive emergency response functions is necessary when the purpose is to protect the critical infrastructure (CI). A shared common operational picture among Public Protection and Disaster Relief (PPDR) authorities means that a real-time communication link from the local level to the state-level exists. If a cyberattack would interrupt electricity transmission, telecommunication networks will discontinue operating. Cyberattack becomes physical in the urban and maritime area if an intrusion has not been detected. Hybrid threats require hybrid responses. The purpose of this qualitative research was to find out technological-related fundamental risks …

Uskonnollisesta musiikista osana peruskoulun toimintaa on puhuttu runsaasti viime vuosina. Artikkelin lähtökohtana onkin yhteiskunnallisen muutoksen ajama tarve uskonnollisen musiikin roolia perusopetuksessakoskevalle keskustelulle. Musiikinopetuksen historia suomalaisessa koulussa on merkittävällä tavalla uskonnollis-nationalistinen, minkä johdosta aikamme uskonnollisen musiikin roolia koskevan keskustelun juuria on etsittävä osin menneisyydestä.

Gold-assisted mechanical exfoliation currently represents a promising method to separate ultralarge (centimeter scale) transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayers (1L) with excellent electronic and optical properties from the parent van der Waals (vdW) crystals. The strong interaction between Au and chalcogen atoms is key to achieving this nearly perfect 1L exfoliation yield. On the other hand, it may significantly affect the doping and strain of 1L TMDs in contact with Au. In this paper, we systematically investigated the morphology, strain, doping, and electrical properties of large area 1L MoS2 exfoliated on ultraflat Au films (0.16-0.21 nm roughness) and finally transferred to an i…

Indefinite integrals from Wronskians and related linear second-order differential equations

2021

Many indefinite integrals are derived for Bessel functions and associated Legendre functions from particular transformations of their differential equations which are closely linked to Wronskians. A large portion of the results for Bessel functions is known, but all the results for associated Legendre functions appear to be new. The method can be applied to many other special functions. All results have been checked by differentiation using Mathematica.

Restoration and Enhancement of Historical Stereo Photos

2021

Restoration of digital visual media acquired from repositories of historical photographic and cinematographic material is of key importance for the preservation, study and transmission of the legacy of past cultures to the coming generations. In this paper, a fully automatic approach to the digital restoration of historical stereo photographs is proposed, referred to as Stacked Median Restoration plus (SMR+). The approach exploits the content redundancy in stereo pairs for detecting and fixing scratches, dust, dirt spots and many other defects in the original images, as well as improving contrast and illumination. This is done by estimating the optical flow between the images, and using it …

Magnon transport in the presence of antisymmetric exchange in a weak antiferromagnet

2021

The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) is at the heart of many modern developments in the research field of spintronics. DMI is known to generate noncollinear magnetic textures, and can take two forms in antiferromagnets: homogeneous or inter-sublattice, leading to small, canted moments and inhomogeneous or intra-sublattice, leading to formation of chiral structures. In this work, we first determine the strength of the effective field created by the DMI, using SQUID based magnetometry and transport measurements, in thin films of the antiferromagnetic iron oxide hematite, $\alpha$-Fe$_2$O$_3$. We demonstrate that DMI additionally introduces reconfigurability in the long distance magnon …

Positron Emission Tomography Imaging of Neurotensin Receptor-Positive Tumors with 68 Ga-Labeled Antagonists: The Chelate Makes the Difference Again

2021

Neurotensin receptor 1 (NTS1) is involved in the development and progression of numerous cancers, which makes it an interesting target for the development of diagnostic and therapeutic agents. A small molecule NTS1 antagonist, named [177Lu]Lu-IPN01087, is currently evaluated in phase I/II clinical trials for the targeted therapy of neurotensin receptor-positive cancers. In this study, we synthesized seven compounds based on the structure of NTS1 antagonists, bearing different chelating agents, and radiolabeled them with gallium-68 for PET imaging. These compounds were evaluated in vitro and in vivo in mice bearing a HT-29 xenograft. The compound [68Ga]Ga-bisNODAGA-16 showed a promising biod…

Can Artificial Intelligence Interprete Legal Norms? A Problem of Practical Reason

2021

Squaric Ester-Based, pH-Degradable Nanogels: Modular Nanocarriers for Safe, Systemic Administration of Toll-like Receptor 7/8 Agonistic Immune Modula…

2021

Small-molecular Toll-like receptor 7/8 (TLR7/8) agonists hold promise as immune modulators for a variety of immune therapeutic purposes including cancer therapy or vaccination. However, due to their rapid systemic distribution causing difficult-to-control inflammatory off-target effects, their application is still problematic, in particular systemically. To address this problem, we designed and robustly fabricated pH-responsive nanogels serving as versatile immunodrug nanocarriers for safe delivery of TLR7/8-stimulating imidazoquinolines after intravenous administration. To this aim, a primary amine-reactive methacrylamide monomer bearing a pendant squaric ester amide is introduced, which i…

Ketogenic Diet Decreases Alcohol Intake in Adult Male Mice

2021

The classic ketogenic diet is a diet high in fat, low in carbohydrates, and well-adjusted proteins. The reduction in glucose levels induces changes in the body’s metabolism, since the main energy source happens to be ketone bodies. Recent studies have suggested that nutritional interventions may modulate drug addiction. The present work aimed to study the potential effects of a classic ketogenic diet in modulating alcohol consumption and its rewarding effects. Two groups of adult male mice were employed in this study, one exposed to a standard diet (SD, n = 15) and the other to a ketogenic diet (KD, n = 16). When a ketotic state was stable for 7 days, animals were exposed to the oral self-a…

Kokopäiväpedagogiikka ja sen kehittäminen varhaiskasvatuksessa

2021

Kokopäiväpedagogiikka on noussut keskeiseksi toimintatavaksi suomalaisissa päiväkodeissa.

Higher-order corrections to exclusive heavy vector meson production

2021

We present results for higher-order corrections to exclusive $\mathrm{J}/\psi$ production. This includes the first relativistic correction of order $v^2$ in quark velocity, and next-to-leading order corrections in $\alpha_s$ for longitudinally polarized production. The relativistic corrections are found to be important for a good description of the HERA data, especially at small values of the photon virtuality. The next-to-leading order results for longitudinal production are evaluated numerically. We also demonstrate how the vector meson production provides complementary information to the structure functions for extracting the initial condition for the small-$x$ evolution of the dipole-pr…

Study Regarding Process of the Electrical Discharge Machining with Magnetic Activation of the Welded Joints of some Materials High Alloy Steel

2021

The scientific paper presents an extensive research on modeling and optimizing the technological parameters of the process for processing by processing electric discharges with massive electrode with and without magnetic activation. Scientific research is based on real data collected from the process of electrical discharges performed on various samples extracted from areas of welded joints of metal components made of high alloy steel. The processing of experimental data was performed both classically and actively, especially the method of the central factorial experiment composed of orthogonal and rotary. The process parameters that were initially modeled and subsequently optimized were ba…
