Arkkitehtuurin poliittinen tiedostamaton

2021

Martin Heidegger’s ”Building Dwelling Thinking” argues that socially engaged architecture fails to understand that the crisis of housing is related to more profound crisis of being. To fully grasp this, architecture needs to be detached from direct social and political questions. Instead architecture needs to examine and elaborate, how dwelling and being are related. Situated however to the actual reconstruction period after the wwii, the statement has its own ideological purpose. By looking this from the point of view of the political unconscious of architecture, the article proposes that Heidegger’s philosophical reflections are deliberately targeted against the political project of moder…

Temporal analogue of the Fresnel diffraction by a phase plate in linear and nonlinear optical fibers

2021

The analogy existing between spatial and temporal optics has motivated many studies to interpret spatial phenomena in the domain of ultrafast optics [1] . Indeed, dispersion and one-dimensional diffraction may share the same mathematical formalism. Temporal analogues of common optical systems have been proposed such as lenses, imaging systems, diffraction gratings, which opens up a whole range of new possibilities for ultrafast photonics.

Current Concepts and Perspectives on Brain Arteriovenous Malformations: A Review of Pathogenesis and Multidisciplinary Treatment.

2021

Brain arteriovenous malformations (bAVMs) are unusual vascular pathologies characterized by the abnormal aggregation of dilated arteries and veins in the brain parenchyma and for which the absence of a normal vascular structure and capillary bed leads to direct connections between arteries and veins. Although bAVMs have long been believed to be congenital anomalies that develop during the prenatal period, current studies show that inflammation is associated with AVM genesis, growth, and rupture. Interventional treatment options include microsurgery, stereotactic radiosurgery, and endovascular embolization, and management often comprises a multidisciplinary combination of these modalities. T…

Impressing my friends: The role of social value in green purchasing attitude for youthful consumers

2021

Abstract Prior studies predominantly use cross-sectional designs to determine effects of pro-environmental beliefs on green purchasing attitudes, thereby limiting the possibility for causal inferences and examining mediation effects. We overcome these gaps by adopting a two-wave longitudinal design to test a moderated-mediation model that draws on consumer choice theory, positing that the effect of implicit pro-environmental beliefs on green purchasing attitudes is mediated by perceived social value from buying green, while the relationship between pro-environmental beliefs and perceived social value is moderated by perceived inconvenience of buying green. Findings from a sample of Polish y…

Assessment of a New Analytical Expression for the Maximum-Power Point Voltage with Series Resistance

2021

This work compares a recently developed analytical expression for the maximum-power point voltage with experimental data, to test its usability for crystalline silicon solar cells. The experimental data covers measurements from 18 multicrystalline silicon solar cells with different bulk resistivities and cell architectures. We show that the expression is able to predict the maximum power obtainable by the measured cells with relative discrepancies below 1%. Additionally, we compare the accuracy of this new expression with two already existing models.

Uniqueness verification of blue fraction as a parameter of spectral irradiance quantification

2021

The spectral distribution of global irradiance is measured in the optimal tilt (45° south) plane of array for the calender year 2020 in Grimstad, Norway. In this work the spectral distribution is quantified in terms of the Blue Fraction (BF). The uniqueness of BF has been tested and reported using the same methodology used for uniqueness verification of average photon energy (APE). The results show that the coefficient of correlation between the APE and BF was 0.98, meaning a possible bijective relation between these two parameters whereby both indicate a similar spectrum. The percentage contribution of integrated irradiance (Rc) was calculated for 25 nm wavelength bins for the BF region 35…

Temperature profiles of field-aged multicrystalline silicon photovoltaic modules affected by microcracks

2021

In this work, the temperature sensitivities of field-aged multicrystalline silicon PV modules affected by microcracks are investigated. It is found that the temperature coefficient of efficiency of all modules has increased more than 10 times over the 20 years period, mainly due to a degradation in the temperature coefficients of fill factor. Temperature coefficient of efficiency of PV modules affected by microcracks changed from -0.44 %/ °C to -1.51 %/°C under solar irradiance conditions at 1010 - 1030 W/m2. Inconsistent values for the Evans–Floschuetz efficiency ratio versus temperature plots for the microcrack affected modules were also observed.

A Deep Learning Approach for Automated Fault Detection on Solar Modules Using Image Composites

2021

Aerial inspection of solar modules is becoming increasingly popular in automatizing operations and maintenance in large-scale photovoltaic power plants. Current practices are typically time-consuming as they make use of manual acquisitions and analysis of thousands of images to scan for faults and anomalies in the modules. In this paper, we explore and evaluate the use of computer vision and deep learning methods for automating the analysis of fault detection and classification in large scale photovoltaic module installations. We use convolutional neural networks to analyze thermal and visible color images acquired by cameras mounted on unmanned aerial vehicles. We generate composite images…

The Covid-19 containment effects of public health measures:A spatial difference-in-differences approach

2021

Abstract The paper studies the containment effects of public health measures to curb the spread of Covid‐19 during the first wave of the pandemic in spring 2020 in Germany. To identify the effects of six compound sets of public health measures, we employ a spatial difference‐in‐differences approach. We find that contact restrictions, mandatory wearing of face masks and closure of schools substantially contributed to flattening the infection curve. The significance of the impact of restaurant closure does not prove to be robust. No incremental effect is evidenced for closure of establishments and the shutdown of nonessential retail stores.

On stiffness and damping of vibro-impact dynamics of backlash

2021

We consider the instantaneous stiffness and damping of the vibro-impact in a backlash pair. Opposed to the existing and mostly used models of the backlash, we address the problem of contact and separation, and the associated force propagation within a mechanical pair, from a viewpoint of the vibro-impact dynamics. We discuss the impact forces with the coefficient of restitution as a principal factor which shapes the transient backlash response. We show that a common approach to modeling the backlash by means of a dead-zone in a restoring force is unsuitable for correctly capturing the mechanical impact. We exemplary demonstrate a qualitative accord between an experimental backlash response a…

CNN based Gearbox Fault Diagnosis and Interpretation of Learning Features

2021

Machine learning based fault diagnosis schemes have been intensively proposed to deal with faults diagnosis of rotating machineries such as gearboxes, bearings, and electric motors. However, most of the machine learning algorithms used in fault diagnosis are pattern recognition tools, which can classify given data into two or more classes. The underlined physical phenomena in fault diagnosis are not directly interpretable in machine learning schemes, thus it is usually called black/gray box models. In this study, convolutional neural networks (CNN) machine learning algorithm is proposed to classify gearbox faults, and the learning features of the CNN filters are visualized to understand the…

Silver based sensors from CD for chloride ions detection

2021

This preliminary work shows a new and innovative way to produce silver based electrodes from compact discs and its application towards the detection of chloride ions. A complete sensor was obtained from the compact discs with working, reference and counter electrode made of silver. Chloride ions were detected by exploiting the high affinity of silver with this anion to produce silver chloride. This electrochemical oxidation of silver can be monitored by using an electrochemical technique such as linear scan voltammetry. Indeed, during linear scan voltammetry the oxidation of silver to silver chloride lead to a peak current that increases linearly with chloride concentration. Using this tech…

A New Approach of Some Contractive Mappings on Metric Spaces

2021

In this paper, we introduce a new contraction-type mapping and provide a fixed-point theorem which generalizes and improves some existing results in the literature. Thus, we prove that the Boyd and Wong theorem (1969) and, more recently, the fixed-point results due to Wardowski (2012), Turinici (2012), Piri and Kumam (2016), Secelean (2016), Proinov (2020), and others are consequences of our main result. An application in integral equations and some illustrative examples are indicated.

Nitrogen (N) is one of the key nutrients supplied in agricultural production worldwide. Over-fertilization can have negative influences on the field and the regional level (e.g., agro-ecosystems). Remote sensing of the plant N of field crops presents a valuable tool for the monitoring of N flows in agro-ecosystems. Available data for validation of satellite-based remote sensing of N is scarce. Therefore, in this study, field spectrometer measurements were used to simulate data of the Sentinel-2 (S2) satellites developed for vegetation monitoring by the ESA. Common Core in Danger? Personalized Information and the Fragmentation of the Public Agenda

2021

The diversification of information sources has reignited the controversy on media-induced fragmentation endangering social integration. The media's capability to set the public agenda and create issues as a common core is a pivotal part of the public sphere and contributes fundamentally to society's cohesion. Algorithm-driven sources like social media that personalize content to the preferences of individuals and their social networks are considered agents of fragmentation of the public sphere. Politically extreme individuals relying on them may be particularly vulnerable to losing touch with society's common core. We employ an innovative operationalization of fragmentation on the individu…

Reactivity of the Superheavy Element 115, Mc, and Its Lighter Homologue, Bi, with Respect to Gold and Hydroxylated Quartz Surfaces from Periodic Rela…

2021

Adsorption energies (Eads) of the superheavy element (SHE) Mc, its lighter homologue (Bi), as well as of another superheavy element Nh and some lighter homologues of SHEs on gold and hydroxylated quartz surfaces are predicted via periodic relativistic density functional theory calculations. The aim of this study is to support "one-atom-at-a-time" gas-phase chromatography experiments that are examining the reactivity and volatility of Mc. The obtained Eads values of the Bi and Mc atoms on the Au(111) surface are >200 kJ/mol. On the hydroxylated quartz surface, Mc should adsorb with a minimal energy of 58 kJ/mol. On both types of surfaces, Eads(Mc) should be ∼100 kJ/mol smaller than Eads(Bi) …
