ASSESSING MERCURY POLLUTION USING BLACK STORK EGGSHELLS

2021

Female birds whose bodies contain environmental contaminants produce eggs with shells that are likewise contaminated, making bird eggshells appropriate indicators for monitoring environmental toxins. Common contaminants include organic mercury compounds, especially methylmercury, which are known to bioaccumulate and biomagnify in the food chain. Black storks (Ciconia nigra) predominantly consume fish and are thus at risk for high mercury intake. In this study, we used eggshells of black storks as a proxy to reconstruct the concentration levels and distribution of mercury, a well-known toxic element, in various parts of Latvia. Preliminary analyses have shown that deposition levels of mercur…

Human Resource Management rules and practices in the health sector : Why do disconnected forms of social regulation persist ?

2021

International audience; This systematic review of the academic literature since 1994 on the application of HRM rules in health care sheds light on the persistence of gaps between institutional norms and standards related to human resource management (HRM) procedures and the actual practices in organizations. Contrary to the affirmation of Scandinavian institutionalism, “translation” processes do not eliminate “controversies”, nor put an end to “decoupling”. The very grounds of new public management (NPM) are brought under question. Though not well known among English-speaking academics, Reynaud’s theory of social regulation opens the way toward explaining this phenomenon and challenges neoi…

2021

An outstanding potentiality of layered two-dimensional (2D) organic–inorganic hybrid perovskites (2DHPs) is in the development of solar cells, photodetectors, and light-emitting diodes. In 2DHPs, an exciton is localized in an atomically thin lead(II) halide inorganic layer of sub-nanometer thickness as in a quantum well sandwiched between organic layers as energetic and dielectric barriers. In previous years, versatile optical characterization of 2DHPs has been carried out mainly for thin flakes of single crystals and ultrathin (of the order of 20 nm) polycrystalline films, whereas there is a lack of optical characterization of thick (hundreds of nanometers) polycrystalline films, fundament…

Toward a Theoretical Framework of Corporate Social Irresponsibility: Clarifying the Gray Zones Between Responsibility and Irresponsibility

2021

In this conceptual article, we argue that defining corporate social responsibility (CSR) and corporate social irresponsibility (CSI) as opposite constructs produces a lack of clarity between responsible and irresponsible acts. Furthermore, we contend that the treatment of the CSR and CSI concepts as opposites de-emphasizes the value of CSI as a stand-alone construct. Thus, we reorient the CSI discussion to include multiple aspects that current conceptualizations have not adequately accommodated. We provide an in-depth exploration of how researchers define CSI and both identify and analyze three important gray zones between CSR and CSI: (a) the role of harm and benefit, (b) the role of the a…

2021

Climate change is having a serious impact on many ecosystems. In the summer of 2018 and 2019, around two thirds of European beech trees were damaged or killed by extreme drought. It is critical to keep these beech woods healthy, as they are central to the survival of over 6,000 other species of animals and plants. The level of damage caused by the drought varied between forests. However, not all the trees in each forest responded in the same way, with severely damaged trees often sitting next to fully healthy ones. This suggests that the genetic make-up of each tree determines how well it can adapt to drought rather than its local environment. To investigate this further, Pfenninger et al. …

A Method Based on Amplitude Probability Density Representation for Sounding High Frequency Noise in Ionospheric Channels

2021

High Frequency (HF) communications efficiency require a precise characterization of the ionospheric channel’s noise. We present a rapid and accurate method to sound the HF ionospheric channels that enables tracing of the time-availability of the channel based on imposed electric field strength thresholds. The method makes use of the amplitude probability density implemented in a real-time spectrum analyzer. Sounding of 3, 10 and 20 kHz bandwidth channels in the 4.8 – 8.8 MHz range is exemplified and specific observations are presented.

CENTRAL LIMIT THEOREM FOR KERNEL ESTIMATOR OF INVARIANT DENSITY IN BIFURCATING MARKOV CHAINS MODELS

2021

Bifurcating Markov chains (BMC) are Markov chains indexed by a full binary tree representing the evolution of a trait along a population where each individual has two children. Motivated by the functional estimation of the density of the invariant probability measure which appears as the asymptotic distribution of the trait, we prove the consistence and the Gaussian fluctuations for a kernel estimator of this density based on late generations. In this setting, it is interesting to note that the distinction of the three regimes on the ergodic rate identified in a previous work (for fluctuations of average over large generations) disappears. This result is a first step to go beyond the thresh…

Avantages comparatifs et dynamiques de spécialisation : le cas des pays africains.

2021

In this thesis we analyze the mechanisms linking trade openness and industrialization patterns. We are particularly interested in developing countries, especially those belonging to the African continent, because of their particular form of production specialization— essentially based on agricultural and mining products. Our goal is to better understand the evolution of these forms of specialization in order to identify possible paths of industrial development. Chapter 1 provides a comprehensive overview of the literature on the theoretical determinants of international specialization and pays particular attention to theories emphasizing a dynamic view of comparative advantage. This chapter…

Forever Young: Structural Stability of Telomeric Guanine Quadruplexes in the Presence of Oxidative DNA Lesions**

2021

International audience; Human telomeric DNA, in G-quadruplex (G4) conformation, is characterized by a remarkable structural stability that confers it the capacity to resist to oxidative stress producing one or even clustered 8-oxoguanine (8oxoG) lesions. We present a combined experimental/computational investigation, by using circular dichroism in aqueous solutions, cellular immunofluorescence assays and molecular dynamics simulations, that identifies the crucial role of the stability of G4s to oxidative lesions, related also to their biological role as inhibitors of telomerase, an enzyme overexpressed in most cancers associated to oxidative stress.

2021

Aim Arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy (ACM) is a primary myocardial disease that typically manifests with cardiac arrhythmias, progressive heart failure and sudden cardiac death (SCD). ACM is mainly caused by mutations in genes encoding desmosome proteins. Desmosomes are cell-cell adhesion structures and hubs for mechanosensing and mechanotransduction. The objective was to identify the dysregulated molecular and biological pathways in human ACM in the absence of overt heart failure. Methods and results Transcriptomes in the right ventricular endomyocardial biopsy samples from three independent individuals carrying truncating mutations in the DSP gene and 5 control samples were analyzed by RNA-S…

Spatial Autocorrelation in Econometric Land Use Models: An Overview

2021

International audience; This chapter provides an overview of the literature on econometric land use models including spatial autocorrelation. These models are useful to analyze the determinants of land use changes and to study their implications for the environment (carbon stocks, water quality, biodiversity, ecosystem services). Recent methodological advances in spatial econometrics have improved the quality of econometric models allowing them to identify more precisely the determinants of land use changes and make more accurate land use predictions. We review the current state of the literature on studies which account explicitly for spatial autocorrelation in econometric land use models …

Palveluohjaus määrittää muistisairaan läheisten palvelujen saamista - aikuiset lapset puolisoita heikommassa asemassa

2021

Bimanual robot control for surface treatment tasks

2021

This work develops a method to perform surface treatment tasks using a bimanual robotic system, i.e. two robot arms cooperatively performing the task. In particular, one robot arm holds the workpiece while the other robot arm has the treatment tool attached to its end-effector. Moreover, the human user teleoperates all the six coordinates of the former robot arm and two coordinates of the latter robot arm, i.e. the teleoperator can move the treatment tool on the plane given by the workpiece surface. Furthermore, a force sensor attached to the treatment tool is used to automatically attain the desired pressure between the tool and the workpiece and to automatically keep the tool orientation …

Jaws Vs.

European children and adolescents spend most of their daily life and especially their school hours being sedentary which may increase their risk for chronic non-communicable diseases later in life. After the curriculum reform of Finnish basic education in 2014, most of the new or renovated comprehensive schools in Finland incorporate open and flexible classroom designs. Their open learning spaces may provide students opportunities to reduce sedentary behavior during school hours. Thus, waist-worn accelerometers were used to assess classroom-based sedentary time (ST), the number of breaks from sedentary time (BST), and physical activity (PA) among cross-sectional samples of 3rd and 5th grade…
