La Postériorité Lexicographique De Nebrija

1992

SUMMARYThis paper examines the bilingual French-Latin editions of the Vocabu-larius Nebrissensis (published between 1511 and 1541) which make up part of the lexicographic heritage of Antonio de Nebrija (1441-1522) in France. It is shown which is the original text of the entries of this dictionary, which had been translated into French from a Latin-Catalan dictionary, and which goes back to a version of the Latin-Spanish original of Nebrija. A precise description of the Vocabularius Nebrissensis, with its additions and eliminations, compared with the original reveals that these items are of two different kinds: 1) translations, in which case a qualitative commentary is made and the original …

Variació formal i canvi lingüístic en els quantificadors catalans: el paper de la pragmàtica

2020

EnglishThis article studies the formal variation of the masculine singular forms of the quantifiers u/un ‘one’, algu/algun ‘someone, some’, ningu/ningun ‘no-one, anyone, not one, any, none’ and cada u/cada un ‘everyone, each one’ in contemporary Catalan. The standard uses of these forms are contrasted with dialectal uses, obtained from a thorough search in oral and written corpora. In addition, they are compared with the uses in the other Romance languages and with their historical evolution in Catalan. The whole set of data, and especially the dialectal information on the Valencian area, allow us to explain the various factors that have interacted in the variation and formal change of thes…

Contrasting the form and use of reformulation markers

2007

This article deals with the form and use of reformulation markers in research papers written in English, Spanish and Catalan. Considering the form and frequency of the markers, English papers tend to prefer simple fixed markers and include fewer reformulators than Spanish and Catalan. On the contrary, formal Catalan and Spanish papers include more markers, some of which are complex and allow for some structural variability. As for use, reformulation markers establish dynamic relationships between portions of discourse which can be identified in our corpus with expansion, reduction and permutation. The analysis of the corpus shows that English authors usually reformulate to add more informa…

Escuela y diversidad lingüística: estudio de las actitudes lingüísticas de los futuros docentes valencianos

2019

The article analyses the linguistic attitudes of future Valencian teachers in a bilingual speaking community characterised by mainstream contact between the Catalan and Spanish languages. This research focuses on the language attitudes of a group of speakers who share a specific set of traits: age, education, profession and socioeconomic status. Special attention is given to attitudes towards four linguistic varieties used by Valencian speakers in their regular interactions: standard Spanish (CS), colloquial Spanish – nonstandard – (CNS), standard Valencian (VS) and vernacular Valencian or apitxat (VNS).

Dislocated Temporalities : Immigration, Identity, and Sexuality in Najat El Hachmi?s «L?últim patriarca»

2018

Recent Catalan criticism has focused on place and space, as well as immigration, but has overlooked temporality. Yet migrations are not only a matter of space (of demographic movements and geographical relocations), but also of time: immigration questions the idea of origins and the possibility of a shared future, and problematizes the rhythms of everyday life. Temporality, in fact, is a key axis in the formation of identities and in cultural conflicts, not just regarding the uses of the past and the projection of societies towards the future, but also in relation to the normative uses of the body. The coexistence of asynchronous temporalities provoked by immigration is a factor in both cul…

The Polysemy of the verbs «pegar», «apegar» and «empegar» in Catalan : a synchronic manifestation of semantic change

2015

In this paper we study the polysemy that the verbs pegar ('hit/stick'), apegar ('stick') and empegar ('stick') possess today in the Catalan language. First of all, we perform a thorough description of the meanings that each of these verbs have acquired not only in the standard but also in the colloquial language. Each of the meanings has been differentiated from the others by analysing the most prominent dictionaries currently available and a corpus of written texts. Additionally, a number of surveys on the spoken language have also been taken into account. Our research has shown that in the different Catalan dialects they do not always have the same meanings or the same verb forms. To be a…

Cuesta arriba e por llano: The development of “postpositions” in Spanish and Catalan

2005

In this article we analyze the formation of Spanish and Catalan phrases with an intransitive locative adverb preceded by a bare noun. These constructions can have a meaning of path and direction (i. e. Sp. rio abajo, Cat. riu avall ‘downriver’) as well as body orientation (i. e. Sp. cara abajo, Cat. cara avall ‘face down’). A detailed analysis of the available historical documentation suggests the hypothesis that these constructions derive from more complex expressions headed by a preposition that lost its phonological properties, without losing its semantic and syntactic features. The presence of a phonologically null preposition is licensed both by the meaning of the incorporated noun and…

Morphological analogy and phonological markedness in the inchoative verbs of catalan

2020
