Altered Protein Expression in the Ileum of Mice Associated with the Development of Chronic Infections with Echinostoma caproni (Trematoda)

2015

Background Echinostoma caproni (Trematoda: Echinostomatidae) is an intestinal trematode that has been extensively used as experimental model to investigate the factors determining the expulsion of intestinal helminths or, in contrast, the development of chronic infections. Herein, we analyze the changes in protein expression induced by E. caproni infection in ICR mice, a host of high compatibility in which the parasites develop chronic infections. Methodology/Principal Findings To determine the changes in protein expression, a two-dimensional DIGE approach using protein extracts from the intestine of naïve and infected mice was employed; and spots showing significant differential expression…

In Vitro–In Vivo Fluctuation Spectroscopies

2010

Fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS) was first developed for biophysical studies in analogy with photon scattering correlation spectroscopy. Although it is mainly devoted to the study of freely diffusing particles, FCS is actually able to discern between different kinds of motions, such as diffusion, anomalous diffusion, or drift motions. The frontier application of FCS nowadays is in medical studies both within cells and on the cell membranes, and in the investigation of single molecules in solid matrices. In this field, FCS originated also image correlation spectroscopy methods. The whole field can be unified under the name of fluorescence fluctuation spectroscopy (FFS). We present…

Optical Contrast and Raman Spectroscopy Techniques Applied to Few-Layer 2D Hexagonal Boron Nitride

2019

The successful integration of few-layer thick hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) into devices based on two-dimensional materials requires fast and non-destructive techniques to quantify their thickness. Optical contrast methods and Raman spectroscopy have been widely used to estimate the thickness of two-dimensional semiconductors and semi-metals. However, they have so far not been applied to two-dimensional insulators. In this work, we demonstrate the ability of optical contrast techniques to estimate the thickness of few-layer hBN on SiO2/Si substrates, which was also measured by atomic force microscopy. Optical contrast of hBN on SiO2/Si substrates exhibits a linear trend with the number of h…

Two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy with a microfluidic diamond quantum sensor

2019

Quantum sensors based on nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond have emerged as a promising detection modality for nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy owing to their micron-scale detection volume and non-inductive based detection. A remaining challenge is to realize sufficiently high spectral resolution and concentration sensitivity for multidimensional NMR analysis of picoliter sample volumes. Here, we address this challenge by spatially separating the polarization and detection phases of the experiment in a microfluidic platform. We realize a spectral resolution of 0.65 +/- 0.05 Hz, an order-of-magnitude improvement over previous diamond NMR studies. We use the platform to perform …

Hyperbranched poly(glycolide) copolymers with glycerol branching points via ring-opening copolymerization

2015

Abstract Sn(Oct) 2 -catalyzed synthesis of hyperbranched poly(glycolide) copolymers with glycerol branching points in the backbone is possible via ring-opening multi-branching copolymerization (ROMBP) of glycolide and 5HDON (5-hydroxymethyl-1,4-dioxan-2-one). Using this strategy, well-defined and soluble branched polyesters with apparent molecular weights (M n ) in the range of 1300–2000 g mol −1 and varying comonomer content (5HDON/glycolide = 30:70–70:30) were obtained. 2D NMR spectroscopy, thermal analysis and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry confirmed the successful incorporation of both monomers and the resulting branched structure. Multiple end group functionality offers the possibility fo…

Conformational Changes and Charge Transfer in Biomolecules Resolved Using Dynamic Enhanced Raman Correlation Spectroscopy

2019

International audience; In this contribution, we report that conforma-tional changes of molecules that are often buried in a wide-distributed Gaussian distribution can be discerned by analyzing the dynamics of specific Raman lines. We investigate the pertinence of the auto-and cross-correlation functions applied to the dynamics of three Raman lines of an amino acid, the tryptophan. The cross-correlation between intensity and the Raman band is an indicator of the charge transfer during the diffusion limited reaction of tryptophan and the gold surface. The Pećlet number Pe can provide a valuable indicator of the convective and/or diffusive features of each Raman band. Adsorption induced confo…

CFD prediction of bubble behavior in two-dimensional gas-solid fluidized beds

2009

This work focuses on the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation of a laboratory-scale, two-dimensional fluidized bed and the relevant experiments in order to validate the prediction capability of the adopted codes and models. Both experimental and computational quantitative data were analyzed by means of an original digital image analysis technique, allowing for coherent comparison of computational and experimental results. In particular, this work analyzes the capability of the CFD simulations in predicting the fluctuating behavior of bubbling fluidized beds by means of frequency analysis of bubble-related phenomena.

Crossed 2D versus Slipped 1D π-Stacking in Polymorphs of Crystalline Organic Thin Films

2019

Polymorphs of organic semiconductors are of great interest as they shed light to structure-property relationships. The full X-ray thin film structure analysis of two polymorphs (B, G) of an important n-type semiconducting dicyano-distyrylbenzene based small molecule (CN-TFPA) is reported. Drastically different structures of the monotropic phases are revealed, that is an uncommon 2D crossed π-stacked arrangement for the B-phase versus a 1D slipped π-stack for G. Both phases exhibit a layered structure in the (100) plane with high structural integrity, driven by the hydrophobic contacts of the terminal CF3 groups; as (100) coincides with the film surface, this allows for exfoliation by scotch…

Atlas for the properties of elemental two-dimensional metals

2018

Common two-dimensional (2D) materials have a layered three-dimensional (3D) structure with covalently bonded, atomically thin layers held together by weak van der Waals forces. However, in a recent transmission electron microscopy experiment, atomically thin 2D patches of iron were discovered inside a graphene nanopore. Motivated by this discovery, we perform a systematic density-functional study on atomically thin elemental 2D metal films, using 45 metals in three lattice structures. Cohesive energies, equilibrium distances, and bulk moduli in 2D are found to be linearly correlated to the corresponding 3D bulk properties, enabling the quick estimation of these values for a given 2D metal a…

Matheuristics for the irregular bin packing problem with free rotations

2017

[EN] We present a number of variants of a constructive algorithm able to solve a wide variety of variants of the Two-Dimensional Irregular Bin Packing Problem (2DIBPP). The aim of the 2DIBPP is to pack a set of irregular pieces, which may have concavities, into stock sheets (bins) with fixed dimensions in such a way that the utilization is maximized. This problem is inspired by a real application from a ceramic company in Spain. In addition, this problem arises in other industries such as the garment industry or ship building. The constructive procedure presented in this paper allows both free orientation for the pieces, as in the case of the ceramic industry, or a finite set of orientation…
