Nucleophilic benzoylation using lithiated methyl mandelate as a synthetic equivalent of the benzoyl carbanion. Oxidative decarboxylation of α-hydroxyacids

Abstract The synthesis of alkyl aryl ketones using lithiated methyl mandelate as a synthetic equivalent of the benzoyl carbanion is reported (Umpolung). The methodology involves alkylation of methyl mandelate, hydrolysis of the ester group and oxidative decarboxylation of the resulting α-hydroxyacids. The last step is carried out in a catalytic aerobic way using a Co(III) complex in the presence of pivalaldehyde under very mild and advantageous conditions. The procedure is also applied to methyl mandelates substituted on the aromatic ring.

Sheets of alternating chirality in the structure of a novel iron(III) complex with a cyclic oxamide ligand

An organic–metalloorganic analogue of the inorganic clay minerals has been obtained from the cyclization of N,N′-bis(ethoxalyl)phenylenediamine in basic medium in the presence of iron(III) ions leading to formation of a cyclic oxamide ligand (L). The combination of intramolecular (covalent) interactions between metal and ligand and intermolecular (noncovalent) ionic interactions creates a novel layered compound with an intriguing crystal structure (shown on the right).

[EN] Two new heterobimetallic complexes [Cu(pdmg)Ni(Me-3[12]N-3)(CH3CH2OH)](ClO4)(2)(2) and [Cu(pdmg) Mn(bipy)(2)]-ClO4)(2) . H2O (3) (H(2)pdmg = 3,9-dimethyl-4,8-diazaundeca-3,8-diene-2 10-dione dioxime; Me-3[12]N-3 = 2,4,4-trimethyl-1,5,9-triazacyclododeca-1-ene; bipy = 2,2'-bipyridyl) have been prepared and characterized. The structure of 2 has been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods. It consists of [Cu(pdmg)Ni(Me-3[12]N-3)(CH3CH2OH)](2+) cations and non-coordinated perchlorate anions. Aerobic epoxidation of olefins catalysed by square-planar cobalt(III) complexes of bis-N,N′-disubstituted oxamides and related ligands

The new square-planar nickel(II) complexes of o-phenylenebis(N′-methyloxamidate) and related ligands catalyse the aerobic epoxidation of olefins with co-oxidation of pivalaldehyde; the modulation of catalytic activity by substituents along this series of metal complexes points out the role of high-valent nicke(IV)-oxo species as the putative intermediate in these oxygen atom transfer reactions.

Alcohol oxidation by dioxygen and aldehydes catalysed by square-planar cobalt(III) complexes of disubstituted oxamides and related ligands

The square-planar cobalt(III) complexes of o-phenylenebis(N′-methyloxamidate) (Me2opba) and related oxamate (Meopba) and bis(oxamate) (opba) ligands catalyse the selective oxidation, by dioxygen and pivalaldehyde, of a wide range of secondary alcohols to the corresponding ketones, in good yields and under mild conditions in acetonitrile at room temperature. Thus, the oxidation of the series of α-alkylbenzyl alcohols PhCH(OH)R (R = Me, Et, iPr, tBu) results in the exclusive formation of ketones as a product of C−H bond cleavage, and no C−C bond cleavage products are observed in any case. Ein organisch-metallorganisches Analogon von Tonmineralien wurde unter Cyclisierung von N,N′-Bis(ethoxalyl)phenylendiamin zu einem zweizahnigen Oxamid-Liganden (L) in basischem Medium und in Gegenwart von Eisen(III)-Ionen erhalten. Das Zusammenwirken von intramolekularen (kovalenten) Wechselwirkungen zwischen Metall und Ligand und intermolekularen (nichtkovalenten) ionischen Wechselwirkungen fuhrt dabei zu einer neuartigen Schichtverbindung mit einer faszinierenden Kristallstruktur (siehe rechts).

[EN] The new heterometallic sodium(I)¿copper(II) compound Na4Cu2 (2) · 10.5 H2O (3), where H8[2] stands for N,N',N'',N'''-methanetetrayltetrakismethylenetetrakis(oxamic acid), has been synthesized and its crystal structure determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The structure of 3 consists of cationic [Cu2(¿4:¿4-2)]4- dinuclear units, coordinated sodium cations, and water molecules. In the crystal, the dinuclear copper entities are joined through discrete aggregates of eight sodium atoms linked by oxamato and water bridges, leading to a three-dimensional polymeric network.

Structure and magnetic properties of a linear oximato-bridged tetranuclear copper(II) complex

Abstract The tetranuclear copper(II) complex of formula [Cu2(dmg)(Hdmg)(terpy)]2(ClO4)2 (1) (H2dmg = dimethylglyoxime and terpy = 2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine) has been synthesized and its crystal structure determined by X-ray diffraction methods. It crystallizes in the triclinic system, space group P(−1), with a = 14.382(3), b = 13.728(3), c = 8.979(2) A, α = 96.99(2), β = 111.85(2), γ = 111.22(3)°, V = 1465.0(9) A3, Z = 1, Dc = 1.607 g cm−3, Mr = 1418.0, F(000) = 719, λ(Mo Kα) = 0.71073 A, μ(Mo Kα) = 16.61 cm−1 and T = 298 K. Wie vorhergesagt antiferro- und ferromagnetisch sind die beiden Schichtpolymere [Co(NCS)2(pyz)2] 1 bzw. [Co(NCS)2(pym)2] 2 (Strukturausschnitt im Bild). Highly Diastereoselective Michael Reaction of (S)‐Mandelic Acid Enolate. Chiral Benzoyl Carbanion Equivalent Through an Oxidative Decarboxylation of α‐Hydroxyacids.

The reaction of the lithium enolate of the 1,3-dioxolan-4-one derived from optically active (S)-mandelic acid and pivalaldehyde with α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds proceeds readily to give the corresponding Michael adducts in good yields and high diastereoselectivity. Subsequent basic hydrolysis of the acetal and oxidative decarboxylation of the α-hydroxyacid moiety provides chiral 2-substituted 1,4-dicarbonyl compounds with very high enantiomeric excesses.

Slow relaxation of the magnetization in Oximato-bridged heterobimetallic Copper(II)-Manganese(III) chains

The use of the oximato-containing copper(II) complexes, [Cu(Hdeg)2] (H2deg = diethylglyoxime), [Cu(Hmeg)2] (H2meg = methylethylglyoxime) and [Cu(Hdmg)2] (H2dmg = dimethylglyoxime), as ligands toward manganese(II) acetate in methanol afforded the heterobimetallic compounds of formula [MnCu(deg)2(CH3COO)(H2O)2] (1), [MnCu(meg)2(CH3COO)(H2O)2] (2) and [MnCu(dmg)2(CH3COO)(H2O)2] (3) where the starting manganese(II) ion was oxidized to manganese(III) by air. Synthesis, spectroscopic characterization and electrochemical behaviour of nickel(II) complexes with C-meso-5,5,7,12,12,14-hexamethylcyclotetradecane (Me6[14]aneN4). Crystal structure of {Ni(Me6[14]aneN4)|I2

A series of complexes of formula {Ni(Me6[14]aneN4)X2| (Me6[14]aneN4) = C-meso-5,5,7,12,12,14-hexamethyl-1,4,-8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane and X = N3(1), NCO (2), NCS (3), AcO (4) or I (5) has been synthesized. The crystal structure of (5) has been determined by X-ray diffraction methods. The nickel atom is surrounded by a square-planar array of nitrogen atoms, giving a low-spin complex. The macrocyclic ligand shows the most stable conformation, the six-membered rings exhibiting the chair form while the gauche conformation is adopted by the five-membered rings.
