Antimutagenic effects of flavonoids, chalcones and structurally related compounds on the activity of 2-amino-3-methylimidazo[4,5-f]quinoline (IQ) and…

1993

Abstract Sixty-four flavonoids were tested for their antimutagenic potencies with respect to IQ in Salmonella typhimurium TA98 and in part also towards MeIQ, MeIQx, Trp-P-2, and Glu-P-1 and in S. typhimurium TA100. Antimutagenic potencies were quantified by the inhibitory dose for 50% reduction of mutagenic activity (ID 50 ). A carbonyl function at C-4 of the flavane nucleus seems to be essential for antimutagenicity: two flavanols and four anthocyanidines were inactive. Again, five isoflavons, except biochanin A, were inactive. Within the other groups of 21 flavones, 16 flavonols and 16 flavanones the parent compounds flavone, flavonol, and flavonone possessed the highest antimutagenic pot…

Comments on space–time signature

1993

In terms of three signs associated to two vectors and to a 2-plane, a formula for the signature of any four-dimensional metric is given. In the process, a simple expression for the sign of the Lorentzian metric signature is obtained. The rela- tionship between these results and those already known are commented upon.

Depletion of tumour glutathione in vivo by buthionine sulphoximine: modulation by the rate of cellular proliferation and inhibition of cancer growth.

1993

We have investigated in Ehrlich-ascites-tumour-bearing mice the effect of buthionine sulphoximine (BSO), a selective inhibitor of GSH synthesis, on the rate of GSH depletion of tumour versus normal tissues and its relation to tumour cell proliferation. In normal tissues, GSH and GSSG remain unchanged or close to normal values during tumour growth, even at the last stage of growth when the animal is close to death. After administration of a single dose of BSO (4 mmol/kg), the rates of GSH depletion and recovery in the tumour and in several normal tissues are very different. BSO depletes GSH in cancer cells to a level of 0.3-0.4 mumol/g. The fall in GSH levels is faster when tumour cells do n…

The oligomerisation of 3-hydroxy-1-alkynes with palladium(II) diketonates and phosphorus ligands as the catalytic system

1993

Abstract 3-Methylhex-1-yne-3-ol has been oligomerised by use of Pd(II) acetylacetonate with 31 different phosphorus ligands as catalyst, yielding a dimer (2,4-disubstituted but-1-en-3-yne) and a linear trimer (1,4,6-trisubstituted hexa-1,3-dien-5-yne) as the two main products. By input-output relations a variation of the diketonate and the P ligand, as weil as an alteration of the phosphorus/palladium ratio, has been connected with product ratios as dependent variables. Phosphines produced three association steps up to a cone angle of 170°; the third step representing a stop complex. For the first association the activity of the catalytic system and the portion of the 2,4-dimer increased wi…

Ultrastructural study on human lung in alveolitis versus pulmonary fibrosis

1993

Lung specimens of 21 patients with diffuse interstitial lung disease were examined. The present ultrastructural study outlines the topography and distribution of inflammatory changes in the interstitium, endothelium, and in pneumocytes and phagocytes. Alveolitis is characterized by marked regenerative activity of type II pneumocytes (cuboid metaplasia), intraluminal macrophage accumulation, endothelial swelling, multilamination of the endothelial basement membrane, pericapillary edema, and primarily by cellular infiltrates in the interstitial space. The most prominent feature of the interstitium in pulmonary fibrosis is the lack of immunoinflammatory cells. In some areas there is a marked a…

Covariant trace formalism for heavy mesons-wave top-wave transitions

1993

Heavy meson,s- top-wave, weakb→c transitions are studied in the context of the heavy quark effective theory using covariant meson wave functions. We use the trace formalism to evaluate the weak transitions. As expected from heavy quark symmetry, the eight transitions betweens- andp-wave states are described in terms of only two universal form factors which are given in terms of explicit wave function overlap integrals. We present our results in terms of both invariant and helicity amplitudes. Using our helicity amplitude expressions we discuss rate formulae, helicity structure functions and joint angular decay distributions in the decays $$\bar B \to D^{**} ( \to (D,D^* ) + \pi ) + W^ - ( \…

Final states with strangeness from Crystal Barrel and Asterix

1993

Abstract We discuss φ production in p p annihilation at rest from the Asterix and Crystal Barrel experiments and compare the branching ratios to similar final states without strangeness. The ωπ 0 φπ 0 production ratio is unexpectedly low. In the search for new states, the φπ0 mass spectrum shows no evidence for a resonance in the 1450 MeV/c2 mass range but the K☆K0π0 Dalitz plot shows interesting structure.

Patterns of Experienced Aging with a Finnish Cohort

1993

A cohort study of eighty-year old residents in Jyväskylä (pop. 66,000), central Finland, was carried out in 1990 as part of the EVERGREEN-project. A total of 262 persons born in 1910 were interviewed in the cohort study. The survey data produced a fairly accurate picture of the respondents' objective situation. In order to shed further light on how the respondents felt about growing old, tape recorded narrative stories were collected from a subsample of twenty persons (10 women and 10 men). The stories revealed the subjective meanings and evaluations attached by the individuals concerned to their own aging. Being members of the same culture and the same age cohort, they also shared the sam…

Synthesis and structural study of sodium titanium phosphate-sodium tin phosphate solid solutions. II. Thermal expansion

1993

Abstract The structure of NaTi 2 (PO 4 ) 3 shows the space group R3c, whereas that of NaSn 2 (PO 4 ) 3 presents the space group R3 at room temperature and it undergoes a second order phase transition at 575°C from this structure to another with the space group R3c. Evolution of the structure of NaTi 2 (PO 4 ) 3 NaSn 2 (PO 4 ) 3 solid solutions with temperature has been studied and temperature phase transition established for the compositions studied. Lattice thermal expansion of NaTi 2−x Sn x (PO 4 ) 3 solid solutions with x = 1, 1.2, 1.5 has been determined from x-ray diffraction data at temperatures ranging from 26 to 1000°C. A Study on Plastic Shakedown of Structures: Part II—Theorems

1993

For a continuous elastic-perfectly plastic solid body subjected to a combination of cyclic (mechanical and/or kinematical) load and of a steady (mechanical) load, two theorems of plastic shakedown are presented, one stating a necessary condition, another stating a sufficient condition. The problem of the direct determination of the plastic shakedown boundary is also briefly addressed.

Glycopyrronium bromide blocks differentially responses mediated by muscarinic receptor subtypes.

1993

To analyse the potency of glycopyrronium bromide in blocking responses mediated via subtypes of muscarinic receptors in vitro, we tried to determine its equilibrium dissociation constants at prejunctional muscarinic receptors inhibiting the twitch response of rabbit vas deferens (presumed M1 type), at M2 (paced at left atria), M3 (guinea pig ileum) muscarinic receptor subtypes and at the muscarinic receptor of the rabbit iris sphincter (not M1-M4, not m5). Glycopyrronium bromide shifted to the right the curve for inhibition of the twitch response induced by the agonist McN-A-343, and the methacholine-induced curves for inhibition of rat atrial contraction, and for tonic contraction of guine…

Antibody Response to Meningococcal Polysaccharides A and C in Patients with Complement Defects

1993

Patients with defects of terminal complement components are particularly exposed to the risk of developing neisserial infections and seem to respond poorly to meningococcal capsular polysaccharide (PS) C via natural immunization. The sole meningococcal PSC is. on the other hand, an excellent immunogen in normal people. Considering the great importance of vaccine prophylaxis for the prevention of meningococcal infections in patients with complement defects, it is crucial to study the antibody response to the sole meningococcal PS in these patients. We therefore analysed the levels of anti-PSA and PSC antibodies in the members of four families including patients with homozygous and heterozygo…

Deviations from Kleinman symmetry of the second-order polarizability tensor in molecules with low-lying perpendicular electronic bands

1993

Abstract 4-Nitroaniline (pNA) and 3,5-dinitro-aniline (3,5-DNA) were studied by electric field induced second harmonic generation (EFISH) and electrooptical absorption measurements (EOAM) in dioxane solution at T = 298 K. The measurements were carried out for two polarization conditions, the electric field vector of the linearly polarized incident light being parallel or perpendicular to the static electric field. The second-order polarizability tensor of pNA is confirmed to be Kleinman symmetric, while a strong deviation from index permutation symmetry is observed for 3,5-DNA. The latter is quantitatively interpreted by contributions of a low-lying electronic band with transition dipole pe…

Periplectómeno. La aristeia de una vieja figura cómica

1993

Periplectomenus, a character of problematic classification on which the thesis of contaminatio by Miles is based, has traditionally been related to senes lepidi. A comparative study shows that this character does not belong to this group and the features that make him differ bring him close to the parasite-sodalis opitulator. The aristeia provides the clues to interpret him: two dramatic lines converge on him, the one is reality, the other is pretensions, coinciding his features with the ones of the ὀψιμαθής described by Theophrastus in Characters. His complexity is the reason of his bad luck.

MONENSIN ENHANCES DIGOXIN-INDUCED ARRHYTHMIAS IN GUINEA-PIGS

1993

Effects of pretreatment with monensin (150 ug/kg), atenolol (0.3 mg/kg), atenolol plus monensin, verapamil (0.38 mg/kg), verapamil plus monensin, glibenclamide(0.38 mg/kg) and glibenclamide plus monensin on the dose of digoxin required to induce premature ventricular contractions (PVCS) in anaesthetized guinea-pigs were studied. Monensin reduced while atenolol increased the dose of digoxin required to produce PVCS. Atenolol plus monensin increased the dose of digoxin required to produce PVCS in presence of monensin alone. Verapamil reduces the arrhythmogenic effect of monensin on digoxin. Glibenclamide antagonises the effect of monensin on digoxin induced PVCS. From the present data it coul…

Differential effects of the enantiomers R(-) and S(+) oxaprotiline on major endogenous depression, the sleep EEG and neuroendocrine secretion: studie…

1993

The effects of the optically active enantiomers of oxaprotiline (OXP), R(-) OXP and S(+) OXP, on depressive symptomatology and the sleep EEG were investigated in two separate exploratory studies. In addition, the neuroendocrine profile of both compounds was characterized in normal controls. In the patients treated with a daily oral dose of 150 mg S(+) OXP we found a Hamilton depression score that decreased from 29.1 +/- 1.8 (SEM) on day 0 to 14.7 +/- 3.2 on day 28 (P0.01). Six patients were judged to be full responders (HAMD score 0-7 points), three were improved (HAMD score 8-15) and four were nonresponders (HAMD score16). The therapeutic effect achieved with 150 mg R(-) OXP daily was less…

Fibrinolysis in hypertriglyceridaemic subjects in response to venous occlusion.

1993

We have measured various fibrinolytic and coagulation parameters (t-PA antigen, PAI, fibrinogen, plasminogen and factor VII) before and after 10 min of venous occlusion in 20 hypertryglyceridaemic subjects (twelve males and eight females, age 38 +/- 4 years, body mass index 23 +/- 1.5) and 20 healthy normal subjects, matched for sex (twelve males and eight females), age (37 +/- 3.5 years) and body mass index (22.8 +/- 1.4). At rest, t-PA:Ag, PAI, fibrinogen, plasminogen and factor VII were significantly (P < 0.005) higher in hypertriglyceridaemic subjects than in normal controls. After venous occlusion, the increase in all parameters except t-PA:Ag was more marked in the patient group than …

Kontrastmittel-Kurzinfusion oder -Bolusinjektion bei der i.v. Urographie

1993

The rate of contrast injection during i.v. urography may vary considerably (bolus injection or drip infusion). The effect of 5 rates of injection (6, 12, 18, 36 and 72 ml/min) on the contrast density in the renal collecting system was examined over a period of 30 minutes. Measurements showed an inter-individual difference of more than 200% in each group. The intra-individual variations for different rates of injection were very slight; individual concentration in the kidney for a given dose depends only slightly on the rate of injection. There is no statistically significant improvement in contrast values as a result of a bolus injection. The reduced incidence of side effects justifies the …

Outsourcing information systems: A strategic partnership with risks

1993

Abstract As information processing and telecommunications technology increase in sophistication and complexity, organizations are finding it more difficult to manage their information systems (IS) for business success. Growing numbers are now sharing these responsibilities and risks with outsourcing vendors. American Standard, Eastman Kodak, General Dynamics, Metropolitan Life, and Young & Rubicam are prominent companies which have outsourced some or all of their IS activities. They are looking to gain competitive advantages by cutting costs and focusing internal resources on core activities. However, compromises in management control and data security, the potential of hidden costs, and th…

Effects of temperature on gastric evacuation rate and absorption and transport of dietary lipids in sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax, L.)

1993

Abstract 1. 1. Gastric evacuation rate and lipid absorption and transport were studied in sea bass reared at 25°, 20° and 15°C. 2. 2. An increase in gastric evacuation and a reduction in lipid absorption were observed at the higher temperature. 3. 3. Lowering temperature (15°C), led to a decrease in the rate of gastric emptying, with a prolonged lipid absorption. 4. 4. Relationships between lipid absorption and gastric evacuation are discussed.

Vasoactive intestinal peptide stimulation of cyclic guanosine monophosphate formation: further evidence for a role of nitric oxide synthase and cytos…

1993

In the rat pineal gland vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) and beta-adrenergic agonists stimulate cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) formation and their action is amplified by alpha 1-adrenergic agonists. Since beta-adrenergic stimulation of cGMP is suggested to involve activation of nitric oxide (NO) synthase and NO-mediated activation of cytosolic guanylate cyclase (GC), we investigated the effects of the NO synthase inhibitor N-monomethyl-L-arginine (L-NMMA) and of the cytosolic GC inhibitor methylene blue (MB) on VIP receptor-stimulated cGMP formation. Both L-NMMA and MB depressed VIP-induced cGMP formation as well as alpha 1-adrenergic potentiation of VIP-stimulated cGMP formation …

Antiaggressive and motor effects of haloperidol show different temporal patterns in the development of tolerance.

1993

Abstract The study of the temporal course of tolerance development was used as a means to separate different aspects of the action of haloperidol on social behavior. Agonistic behavior was studied in isolated male mice that confronted standard opponents (anosmic and grouped conspecifics) in a neutral area. The aggressive and motor behaviors of the experimental animals were evaluated 30 min or 24 h either after a single injection of haloperidol (0.4 mg/kg) or following the last of a series of 15 or 30 injections. When animals were evaluated 30 min after the haloperidol injection, no tolerance to the antiaggressive effects was evident. The action on immobility, on the contrary, showed a clear…

Abstract Reconstitution experiments of light-harvesting complexes were performed with the green alga Chlorella fusca and the chlorophyll c-containing prasinophyte Mantoniella squamata using a modified method according to Plumley and Schmidt [Proc. N atl. Acad. Sei. U .S.A . 84, 146 -150 (1987)]. Changing the pigment supply quantitatively or qualitatively in the reconstitution mixture homologous and heterologous reconstitutes were obtained. In contrast to higher plants, light-harvesting polypeptides from green algae are able to bind the chlorophylls as well as the xanthophylls in different stoichiometries. Heterologous reconstitutes of M . squamata polypeptides give further evidence for a r…

The effect of energy-dependent detector efficiency in electron spectroscopic methods: XPS, AES and DCEMS

1993

Systematic studies were performed to investigate the distorting effect of the electron energy dependence of the channeltron detector efficiency on the shape of data distributions in electron spectroscopy. In agreement with earlier results for electron energies up to 3 keV, it was found that a virtually energy-independent shape of the electron distribution might be achieved even in a very broad range of electgron energies (up to 15 keV) by appropriate selection of the operational high voltage of a channeltron. However, the efficieny of channeltrons was also found to depend on count rates, indicating one of the principal difficulties in comparing distribution recorded under different experime…

On Gauge Invariance of Breit-Wigner Propagators

1993

We present an approach to bosonic ($Z^0, W^{\pm}$) as well as fermionic (top-quark) Breit-Wigner propagators which is consistent with gauge invariance arguments. In particular, for the $Z^0$-boson propagator we extend previous analyses and show that the part proportional to $k_{\mu} k_{\nu}/M^2$ must be modified near the resonance. We derive a mass shift which agrees with results obtained elsewhere by different methods. The modified form of a resonant heavy fermion propagator is also given.
