On the possible determination of hyperfine anomalies by trapped ion spectroscopy

Abstract Laser-microwave double-resonance techniques in radiofrequency (rf) traps and Penning traps represent a powerful tool to determine hyperfine structure splittings as well as nuclear g factors to high precision. While hyperfine structure constants have been determined in a number of cases below the 10 −10 level of precision, electronic g factors have been measured to 10 −7 and there are good prospects of obtaining similar accuracy for g l . Moreover sensitive techniques have been developed for injection of ions from outside the trap. This opens the possibility to determine hyperfine anomalies at least to the 1% level of precision for chains of unstable isotopes.

Chemical effect on the XPS spectra of the valence band and on O KLL and Pd MNN Auger spectra in pumice-supported catalysts

X-ray photoelectron spectra of the valence band and X-ray-excited O KLL Auger transition of pumice-supported Pd and Pt catalysts have been obtained and compared to the corresponding spectra of pumice (a naturally occurring amorphous aluminosilicate). The changes observed indicate interaction between metal and support. The valence region of the catalysts consists of three large peaks: one due to the d band of the metals and the other to the O 2p non-bonding orbitals and bonding-type orbitals formed by a mixing of the atomic orbitals (O 2p, Si 3s and Si 3p) of oxygen and silicon from the support. High-resolution stimulated Raman spectroscopy of O2

Abstract The S S and O O branches of the fundamental vibrational band of molecular oxygen in its electronic ground state have been resolved for the first time in Raman spectroscopy. The spectra have been observed, at room temperature and low pressure, with a stimulated Raman scattering (S.R.S.) spectrometer including a multipass cell. From these accurate Raman data combined with microwave data, we have improved the values of the vibrational, rotational, spin-spin, and spin-rotation interactions constants in the v = 1 vibrational state. Flow-injection spectrophometric determination of propoxur with p-aminophenol

Abstract The spectrophotomeric determination of propoxur [2-(1-methyxlthoxy)phenyl methyl carbamate] was carried out with p -aminophenol (PAP) in a flow system. The method involves the on-line hydrolysis with NaOH of propoxur to 2-isopropoxyphenol and the oxidation of PAP to its relative quinone imine with KIO 4 and the reaction between the phenolate and the quinone imine. A four-channel flow manifold was employed to carry out all the different steps of the reaction considered, monitoring the indo dye formed at 600 nm. A dense polarized 3He target based on compression of optically pumped gas

Abstract 3 He-gas is spin polarized by the method of optical pumping of metastables and metastability exchange in a low pressure gas discharge. At a pressure of p ≈ 1.5 Torr a volume of 1 l is polarized within about 30 s to a degree of 50% with 300 mW of incident light from an argon-ion laser pumped LNA laser, tuned to the λ = 1.083 μm resonance line. The polarized gas is compressed by a Toepler pump into a target cell of 120 cm 3 volume. In a first attempt a steady state polarization of 30% has been achieved in the target at a pressure of 685 Torr. The paper analyses the essential parameters governing this technique and pilotes its experimental realization.

Fourier analysis of the stimuli for pattern-induced flicker colors.

Pattern-induced flicker colors (PIFCs) were observed and color matched in rotating discs from which higher-harmonic Fourier components in the square-wave temporal luminance functions of a conventional black-and-white Benham disc had been removed. Since both reddish-brown and blue PIFCs were visible with purely sinusoidal stimuli they cannot result from differences in temporal stimulus shape or pattern and do not provide evidence for a temporal coding theory of color. Abstract The properties of an ordinary ion guide can be improved by inserting a grid between the nozzle and the skimmer. When positive ions are transported, an electric potential lower than +10 V is connected to the grid and one of the order of − 10 V to the skimmer. Efficient focusing is achieved between the nozzle and the grid by a combined action of the viscous helium flow field and the weak electric field. The focusing device is called a “squeezer”. The effects of 3 phosphodiesterase (PDE) inhibitors, rolipram (PDE IV), milrinone (PDE III) and theophylline (non-selective) on PAF (50 ng kg-1; iv)-induced airway vascular leakage have been evaluated in guinea-pigs. Rolipram (3-300 micrograms kg-1; iv) reduced the increase in permeability induced by PAF at all airway levels whereas milrinone (10-1000 micrograms kg-1; iv) and theophylline (30 mg kg-1; iv) were without effects. The anti-leakage activity of rolipram may be of therapeutic value in asthma.

It consists of a conventional electromyograph, a home-made interface and a commercially available transputer-based board installed within a PC/AT compatible. Abstract A new method is proposed for detecting and locating objects of interest within a colour scene under very strong variabilities in lighting conditions, object shape and pigmentation. The method is based on Nearest Neighbour classification and Multiedit-Condensing techniques and is applied to implement the vision subsystem of a robotic citric harvesting device. Experiments and results are reported showing the effectiveness of the method and illustrating its appropriateness to the proposed task.

A Comparative Study of Different Methods of Yeast Strain Characterization

Summary An extensive survey of different methods of yeast strain identification (classical microbiological tests, whole-cell protein electrophoresis, chromosomal patterns, DNA hybridization and mitochondrial DNA restriction analysis) has been carried out in order to differentiate, with industrial purposes, strains present in the Alicante wine ecosystem. Only chromosomal patterns and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) restriction analysis show differences between strains. Both techniques are very complex to be used in bio technological industries. For this reason, we have developed a new, simple, unexpensive and rapid method based on mtDNA restriction analysis.

Status report of the SARA IGISOL used in the study of the 238U(α 40 MeV, ƒ) reaction

Abstract A new ion guide isotope separator on-line (IGISOL), operating with the SARA facility, has been constructed. Using the 238U(α 40 MeV, ƒ) reaction to produce very neutron-rich radioisotopes, all mass chains from A = 96 to 122 have been scanned by conventional methods of nuclear spectroscopy. Provided the stopping volume is separated from the primary beam, it has been proved that the yield is nearly proportional to the He pressure. In addition to the usual advantages (quasi-independence from physical and chemical properties of elements), this makes IGISOL a powerful technique for high energy recoil products. However, the interplay of virulence factors in S. typhimurium pathogenesis is still poorly understood, particularly with regard to the mechanisms and components of the bacterium which are involved in its interaction with the intestinal mucus. We have observed that S. typhimurium is aggregated by incubation with colonic mucus (guinea pig model). To quantify this phenomenon, an aggregation assay was established. The influence of family expressed emotion on the course of schizophrenia in a sample of Spanish patients. A two-year follow-up study.

A sample of 60 Spanish schizophrenic patients was studied to ascertain the relationship between their relatives' expressed emotion (EE) and relapse at follow-up. The relatives' EE and patients' relapse were operationalised following Leff & Vaughn's criteria. At nine months a significant association was not found between the relatives' EE and relapse, but this association became significant on reclassifying the relatives' EE scores after decreasing to four points the cut-off point for critical comments. Two T suppressor (Ts) clones of different specificity have been analyzed for their lymphokine spectrum. BVI/5 is an I-Ek-restricted bovine serum albumin (BSA)-specific Ts cell clone from a CBA/J mouse tolerized by low doses of BSA. The molecular packing and spatial correlations of polymers [CH 2 CR(COOR')] n (R= H, Me; R'= (CH 2 ) 11 + NMe 2 (CH 2 ) 3 SO 3 - ; (CH 2 ) 2 + N(Me)[(CH 2 ) 3 SO 3 - ][C 10 H 21 ]) are studied by means of X-ray analysis and conformational calculations. Abstract The nuclear autoantigen La, a transcription/termination factor of RNA polymerase III, was recently shown to translocalize to the cell surface of growth-stimulated cells during transition from G0- to G1-phase. Here we describe the staining of living mitotic cells with the anti-La mab La11G7. Moreover, La protein added to cell culture medium was able to enter into synchronized mitotic cells. Methane production from orange peel pressing liquid: A kinetic study

Abstract This paper studies the anaerobic fermentation of orange peel pressing liquid (OPPL), in semi‐continuous digesters under thermophilic conditions (50, 55 and 60°C), using rabbit manure as inoculum which has been previously conditioned to substrate and temperature. Experimental data have been fitted, at each temperature, to the Chen and Hashimoto model. Kinetic parameters governing the process have been obtained. It can be observed that both μm and K decrease when temperature increases, within the studied range, whereas the calculated minimum hydraulic retention time, θm, increases with temperature, as tested experimentally.

Hydroxyurea modulates 5-fluorouracil antineoplastic activity in advanced head and neck carcinoma pretreated with chemotherapy

After informed consent 21 patients with advanced head and neck cancer resistant to folinic acid/5-fluorouracil (FA/5FU + cisplatin) were treated with weekly FA/5FU plus low dose hydroxyurea (HU) to evaluate if HU could further modulate 5FU antineoplastic activity. Five patients achieved a partial response (23.8%) which was short-lived (mean duration 6.5 months). Three patients (14%) had stable disease and 13 (62%) progressed. Among responders, four patients had epidermoidal carcinoma and one had clear cell carcinoma. Treatment was well tolerated and 5FU-related toxicity was not apparently worsened by the addition of HU. Low-mass dileptons at high momenta in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions

Abstract We calculate the emission rate of low-mass dileptons at high momenta from a quark-gluon plasma. We find a large enhancement compared with the naive Born rate. Numerical estimates for relativistic heavy ions collisions at RHIC and LHC suggest, however, that the thermal signal is dominated by the background coming from meson decays and from hadronic bremsstrahlung.

Electromagnetic transition probabilities in 130Ce

Abstract Lifetimes of excited nuclear states have been measured in 130Ce using the coincidence-plunger technique. The employed nuclear reaction was 98Mo(36S, 4n)130Ce at a beam energy of 150 MeV. The measurement has been performed at the NSF Daresbury using the ESSA 30 set-up. It was possible to determine lifetimes for the 4+ to 16+ states in 130Ce. The experimental B(E2) values could be well reproduced by calculations using the triaxial rotor model with β = 0.26 and γ = 21° as well as the rotation vibration model (β = 0.25).

Abstract The foundations of an experiment have been worked out with which, in principle, the spin, hyperfine constants and the isomer shift of the 14 ms fission isomer 242mAm can be measured. Such an experiment would be based on the fission fragment anisotropy signal which has actually been observed in this work after spin exchange pumping with polarized rubidium vapour in an optical buffer gas cell. A decrease of the count rate of (12±4)% has been measured at 90% with respect to the quantization axis. The aim of this study was to compare the 'anaerobic threshold' (AnT) of subjects determined during a continuous 2-min incremental exercise test until exhaustion and the 'maximal lactate steady-state' (BLaSsmax) determined during prolonged exercise at constant loads corresponding to the subjects' AnT and/or 5-25% above and below it. Seventeen subjects performed an incremental exercise test and 1-5 prolonged exercise tests on a cycle ergometer until exhaustion at intervals of 1 week, and work rates, oxygen uptake (VO2) values and brachial venous blood lactate (BLa) levels were measured. Abstract The phosphorescence emission and excitation spectra and their polarizations have been studied for 3-methylquinoline and 3-bromoquinoline in methylcyclohexane and ethanol glasses at 77 K. From the results obtained in 3-methylquinoline (τp = 1.30 s in ethanol, τp = 1.05 s in methylcyclohexane and the out-of-plane polarization) it is concluded that the emission originates from a triplet state of 3ππ∗ character. In 3-bromoquinoline, the phosphorescence lifetimes (ca. 8 ms in a non-polar solvent and 15 ms in a polar solvent) and the negative degree of polarization indicate an emitting state of ππ∗ character that is strongly coupled to a higher-lying triplet state of the nπ∗ type. Abstract The relationship between gas-liquid chromatographic (GLC) retention properties and R F values in thin-layer chromatography (TLC) with molecular connectivity indices, m X t , was investigated for a series of benzodiazepines using multiple correlation coefficients, standard errors of estimate, F -Snedecor function values and Student's t -test as the criteria for best equation selection. Lipid content of Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains with different degrees of ethanol tolerance

We analysed the fatty acid and sterol compositions of various Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains with ethanol tolerance varying from 4% to 12% (v/v) ethanol and at different concentrations of ethanol. The results we obtained agree with the existence of a relationship between membrane fluidity and ethanol tolerance but they do not support a direct role of unsaturated fatty acids in this tolerance. On the other hand, they support the importance of ergosterol in this phenomenon.

Abstract Heavy meson, p- to s-wave, one-pion transitions are studied in the context of the union of heavy quark and chiral symmetries. The interactions are described by an effective lagrangian density invariant under the combined heavy quark and chiral symmetries. We study the pattern of the heavy quark symmetry breaking by considering 1 m Q corrections to the infinite mass limit.

Exclusive deuteron electrodisintegration with polarized electrons and a polarized target

Exclusive electrodisintegration of the deuteron using a polarized beam and an oriented target is systematically investigated in a nonrelativistic framework. The structure functions are expanded in terms of Legendre functions whose coefficients are quadratic forms in the electric and magnetic multipole moments. Their experimental separation by specific experimental settings is outlined. The structure functions are studied with respect to their sensitivity to the potential model, to subnuclear degrees of freedom, and to electromagnetic form factors in different kinematical regions.

Four derivatives of 2, 6, 6-trimethylbicyclo[3.1.1]hept-2-ene (α-pinene) and four derivatives of 2-methylene-6, 6-dimethylbicyclo[3.1.1]heptane (β-pinene) were synthesized and their 1H, 13C and 17O NMR spectra were measured, analysed and assigned. The 1H NMR spectral parameters were obtained by computer-aided analyses of the very complex multi-spin, second-order spectra. Some of the 13C NMR chemical shift assignments of these compounds reported in the literature should be changed, based on these accurate 1H NMR spectral analyses and carbon-proton chemical shift correlated spectra (COSY). Light-cone quark model with spin force for the nucleon and Δ (1232)

Abstract Electromagnetic structure functions for the nucleon, static observables for the nucleon and N → Δ (1232) transition form factors are calculated in a relativistic constituent quark model on the light cone. The model simulates the main effect of the spin force between quarks in terms of smaller (and lighter) scalar ud diquarks in the nucleon. The polarized proton structure function is found to agree with the EMC data.
