Effects of ipriflavone on bone mass and calcium metabolism in postmenopausal osteoporosis.

1992

Recently it has been demonstrated that ipriflavone (IP), an isoflavone derivative, is able to increase bone mass in patients with established postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMO). Here we present a preliminary report of a 2-year multicenter, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study performed in order to evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of IP in PMO. A large number of patients with PMO, referred to 12 Italian centers, was randomly divided into 2 groups and treated with oral IP (600 mg/day) or placebo (Pl). All patients received an oral Ca supplement (1 g/day). One hundred and twenty six patients completed 1 year of the study. Bone mineral density (BMD) of the distal radius, measure…

Photoelectric effect from a metal surface: a revisited theoretical model

1992

The Sommerfeld model extended to include radiation–electron interaction in the regime of highly intense fields is taken as the basis for studying theoretically the laser multiphoton photoelectric effect from a metal surface. Numerical analysis is carried out without approximations other than those inherent in the model itself; the study of the multiphoton aspect of the problem is based on a scheme that is nonperturbative in an essential way. The numerical analysis facilitates insight into the potential and the limits of the model in the interpretation of recent experiments and into the similarities and differences between the metal multiphoton effect and atomic multiphoton ionization. The r…

Evidence for a modular structure of the homologous repetitive C-terminal carbohydrate-binding sites of Clostridium difficile toxins and Streptococcus…

1992

The homologous C-terminal repeats of Clostridium difficile toxins (ToxA and ToxB) and streptococcal glucosyltransferases appear to mediate protein-carbohydrate interactions at cellular binding sites with sugar moieties as substrates. A consensus sequence of 134 repeating units from gram-positive bacteria indicates that these repeats have a modular design with (i) a stretch of aromatic amino acids proposed to be involved in the primary carbohydrate-protein interaction, (ii) an amplification of this interaction by repetition of the respective sequences, and (iii) a second domain, not characterized, that is responsible for carbohydrate specificity.

Collinear fast atomic-beam laser spectroscopy at riken garis/igisol

1992

We have constructed a fast atomic-beam collinear laser spectroscopy system connected to the on-line isotope separator facility GARIS/IGISOL at RIKEN. This system is potentially powerful in studying refractory elements. To test the system, an off-line collinear experiment was made on stable Hf isotopes produced by means of laser ablation technique. For production of radioactive Hf isotopes, the use of the inverse kinematics of a fusion reaction,9Be(166Er,xn)175-xHf, was investigated. The radioactive isotope169Hf was successfully extracted from GARIS/IGISOL and accelerated up to 30 keV.

Lipid peroxidation capacities in the myocardium of endurance-trained rats and mice in vitro.

1992

The endurance-training programme in Experiment 1 (Exp. 1) consisted of a total swimming time of 149–159 h per male Han Wistar rat and in Experiment 2 (Exp. 2) the male NMRI-mice run on a treadmill at a speed of 25 m min-1 1 h per day, 5 days a week for 3 weeks. One group of the rat hearts was perfused with 0.3 mm cumene hydroperoxide (CumOOH) while the others were fractioned (mitochondria, sarcolemma and sarcoplasmic reticulum) and these cell fractions and homogenates were used to determine the total concentration of peroxidative lipids and the susceptibility to lipid peroxidation. The perfusion with CumOOH caused the release of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) into the perfu…

The Effects of Selective Stellate Ganglion Manipulation on Ventricular Refractoriness and Excitability

1992

The effects of selective stellate ganglion stimulation or stellectomy on ventricular excitability were studied in 30 open chest mongrel dogs anesthetized with alpha-chloralose. The effective refractory period (ERP) and strength interval curves (stimulus intensity [S2] = twice the diastolic threshold [ERP], and 2, 3, 5, 7, and 14 mA) were determined using bipolar epicardial electrodes placed in the mid-anterior wall of the right ventricle (RV) and the mid-posterolateral wall of the left ventricle (LV) during left stellate ganglion stimulation (LSGSt, n = 8) or right stellate ganglion stimulation (RSGSt, n = 8), or after left stellectomy (LSGEx, n = 7) or right stellectomy (RSGEx, n = 7). The synthesis and the results of the structural study of two copolysiloxanes with laterally fixed trinitrofluorenone (TNF) units is reported. The two copolysiloxanes having 2,4 (1a) and 5,3 (1b) dimethylsiloxane comonomer units per TNF side group differ significantly in their phase behaviour as evident from optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray scattering: 1b shows a nematic mesophase whereas 1a is an amorphous material. The different phase behaviour is discussed in terms of microphase separation between the siloxane backbone and TNF side groups.

Seed oils as additives: penetration of triolein, methyloleate and diclofop-methyl in maize leaves

1992

Summary: Resume: Zusammenfassung Methyl ester derivatives of seed oils have a greater effect on graminicide efficacy than the parent oils. To explain this difference, we investigated the penetration of the radiolabelled oils, triolein (TRI) and methyl oleate (MEO), in maize leaves, and their influence on diclofop-methyl penetration. Over a period of 3 h 30% of applied TRI penetrated maize leaves, but no further penetration was observed. In contrast, MEO entry proceeded regularly to 72% over a period of 27 h. The amount of oil found in epicuticular wax (chloroform wash) was generally less than 4% of the recovered label, and was even lower (<1%) in ‘glossy 1’ hybrids which have no crystalline…

First observation of a resonance ionization signal on242mAm fission isomers

1992

The feasibility of a hyperfine spectroscopy on242mAm fission isomers has been demonstrated at the low target production rate of 10/s. The experimental method employed is based on resonance ionization spectroscopy in a buffer gas cell with detection of the ionization process by means of the fission decay of the isomers. The resonance ionization has been performed in two steps, utilizing an excimer dye laser combination with a repetition rate of 300 Hz. The first resonant step proceeds through theJ=7/2 term at 21440.35 cm−1, which has been excited with the tuncable dye laser beam of a wavelength of 466.28 nm, the second non-resonant step is achieved with the 351 nm radiation of the excimer la…

Comparative evolution of P–M system and infection by the sigma virus in French and Spanish populations ofDrosophila melanogaster

1992

SummaryIn 1983, an extensive survey of populations ofD. melanogasterwas started in a southern French region (Languedoc) in two non-Mendelian systems: the P–M system of transposable elements and the hereditary Rhabdovirus sigma. Unexpectedly fast-evolving phenomena were observed and interesting correlations were noted, giving similar geographical pattern to the region in both systems. For these reasons, the analysis was continued and extended towards the north (Rhône Valley) and the south (Spain). In the P–M system, all the Languedoc populations evolved from 1983 to 1991 towards the Q type which is characteristic of the Rhône Valley populations. In contrast, M′ strains are currently observed…

Flow-cytometric enumeration of reticulocytes with the new fluorochrome 1′,3′-diethyl-4,2′-quinolylthiacyanine

1992

Several flow-cytometric methods for reticulocyte enumeration in whole blood have been developed, with different degrees of practical use. Recently, a new fluorochrome, 1′,3′-diethyl-4,2′-quinolylthyacianine (DEQTC) was proposed in a brief report, as an alternative to thiazole orange for reticulocyte counting. We have evaluated the usefulness of this fluorescent stain by assessing the optimal conditions for the flow-cytometric analysis, and by comparing in double-blind assays the quantitative results of this technique with those obtained by manual counting with brilliant cresyl blue. Our results show that flow cytometry with DEQTC is highly correlated to the manual method (r=0.95–0.99), supp…

Developmental and biochemical studies on the phenylalanine hydroxylation system in Drosophila melanogaster

1992

Abstract The enzyme phenylalanine hydroxylase, the substrate phenylalanine, the product of the reaction tyrosine, and the probable in vivo cofactors (6R)- l -erytro-5,6,7,8-tetrahydrobiopterin (H4Bip) and 5,6,7,8-tetrahydropterin (H4Ptr), have been measured during development in Drosophila. The developmental profile of phenylalanine hydroxylase activity shows two peaks. The larger occurs at the time of pupation, coiciding with an important accumulation of tyrosine in the insect. The minor peak appears at the time of adult emergence. The developmental profile of H4Bip shows also two peaks, coinciding with those of maximal phenylalanine hydroxylase activity. However, H4Ptr is only detectable …

Filtration and ingestion rates of brachionus calyciflorus after exposure to endosulfan and diazinon

1992

Abstract 1. Rotifers Brachionus calyciflorus were exposed to endosulfan and diazinon to determine the effect on nitration and ingestion rates. 2. The experiments were carried out with the algae Nannochloris oculata in a density of 5 × 105 cell/ml. 3. Rates of filtration and ingestion were decreased significantly at sublethal concentrations of pesticide tested after 5 hr exposure. 4. The effective concentration at which filtration and ingestion rates were reduced to 50% of those in controls ( ec 50) were calculated for both toxicants.

A factor derived from chick embryo retina which inhibits DNA synthesis of retina itself.

1992

Chick embryo retinas contain a peptide factor that inhibits DNA synthesis in explants of chick embryo retina. The inhibitory factor, obtained by acid/ethanol extraction from 15-day-old chick embryo retinas, was partially purified by affinity chromatography on heparin-sepharose CL-6B and gel filtration on Sephadex G-100. The inhibitor reduced DNA synthesis with maximal effects observed in retinal explants from 7 to 8-day-old chick embryos. The inhibitory effect became apparent after 10 h of incubation and reached the maximum levels after 16 h. DNA-inhibiting activity was heat and acid-stable and was destroyed by trypsin and alkaline treatments. The inhibitory effect was observed in retinal e…

Superexchange pathways in oxovanadium(IV) phosphates

1992

Abstract Oxovanadium(IV) phosphates show a diversity of magnetic behaviours that cannot be deduced from their respective structural features only. In part, this is due to the involvement of phosphate bridges in the spin transfer between V(IV) centres, and 31P solid state nuclear magnetic resonance becomes a key tool in determining the exchange mechanisms. The magnetic properties of a wide set of vanadium(IV) containing derivatives can be explained by realizing that a good overlap of the magnetic orbits may be achieved through paths involving phosphorus d orbitals.

Electronic hamiltonian of diatomic molecules in the basis of coupled momenta eigenfunctions

1992

A systematic procedure has been developed to construct an electronic energy matrix for diatomics in the basis of antisymmetrized products of atomic wave functions represented as linear combinations of coupled momenta eigenfunctions. The exchange matrix element is expanded in powers of electronic interchange between atoms. General expressions of many-electron angular coefficients have been obtained for all types of products of one- and two-electron and overlap integrals in energy matrix elements. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The article is an assessment of some recent wide-scoping development and education project carried out in the working life. ln addition to presenting the experiences and results of empirical research projects, the article takes a more general view of the quality issues connected to adult education from the aspects of planning, implementation and assessment. It appears that despite the availability of personnel training planning guides, textbooks and training for trainers during the past couple of decades, the adult education action models used in the working life are highly conventional, at times even school-like. Small and medium-large enterprises especially tend to continue to rely a lot …

Degree of elaborative processing in two implicit and two explicit memory tasks

1992

The level of elaborative processing made by subjects to pairs of words (read vs. generated) and the degree of relationship between the words of each pair (related, rhymed, or rhymed and related) were manipulated on two explicit tasks (cued recall and recognition) and two implicit tasks (word-stem completion and tachistoscopic word identification) to test the empirical validity of the processing-approach theory (see, e.g., Roediger, 1990a, 1990b; Roediger, Srinivas, & Weldon, 1989) of explicit/implicit dissociations. Results give support to the predictions made by Roediger"s theory.
