Secondary relaxation in the glass-transition regime of ortho-terphenyl observed by incoherent neutron scattering.
1992
We report on incoherent-neutron-scattering measurements in the supercooled regime of the van der Waals liquid ortho-terphenyl. A secondary localized relaxational process on the picosecond time scale is found. In accordance with mode-coupling theories of the glass transition, the relaxational dynamics around a critical temperature ${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{c}}$ decomposes into two time regimes.
Gastric acid secretory responses induced by peptone are mediated by capsaicin-sensitive sensory afferent neurons
1992
The involvement of capsaicin-sensitive afferent neurons in modulating acid-secretory responses to peptone, a product of protein digestion, has been investigated in the continuously perfused stomach of the urethan-anesthetized rat. Systemic neonatal pretreatment with capsaicin, which destroys primary afferent neurons, does not modify basal levels of acid secretion. Acid responses to intragastric perfusion with isotonic (0.5, 1, and 2.4%) or hypertonic (10 and 20%) solutions of peptone were reduced in capsaicin-treated rats. Intragastric perfusion with hypertonic mannitol (18%) did not stimulate secretion of acid. Systemic capsaicin pretreatment did not modify acid responses to intraperitone…

Gene flow rates in Yugoslavian populations of the smooth newt Triturus vulgaris
1992
Allozymic variation in 22 loci in several Yugoslavian populations of four subspecies of the smooth newt Triturus vulgaris, has been analyzed. The frequency of private alleles and the coefficient of genetic differentiation, FST, give very different indirect estimates of the effective number of migrants per generation, Nm. However, such Nm estimates, in most cases higher than 1, imply that gene flow between populations is large enough as to prevent differentiation by random drift. In the case of T.v. vulgaris, of which sixteen populations amply distributed through Yugoslavia were sampled, there is evidence that frequent extinction and recolonization processes might be responsible for the obse…
Changes of Expression of Intermediate Filament Proteins During Ontogenesis of Eccrine Sweat Glands
1992
The intermediate filament expression in fetal and adult human eccrine sweat glands was studied by immunoperoxidase microscopy performed on cryostat sections using monoclonal antibodies against various cytokeratins (CK), vimentin, and actin. In palmar skin of 14-week-old fetuses, the early dermal cords showed a primitive CK pattern similar to that of epidermal basal cells. From week 15 on (distal finger skin), inner cells of the proximal (ductal) portion of the glandular anlagen expressed CK 1/10/11 and 19 (markers of adult eccrine ductal luminal cells). In addition, CK 4 was expressed in ductal luminal cells mainly in the fetal period. In the distal portion of the sweat gland anlagen the in…
Transport properties of silicon doped n-indium selenide
1992
Hall effect and resistivity measurements in silicon doped indium selenide (InSe), from 7K to 500K, are reported. Results are interpreted through a model, previously proposed for tin doped InSe, that takes into account the contribution of both three- and two-dimensional electrons to charge transport along the layers in InSe.
DIRECT PRODUCTION OF PIONIC ATOMS FROM RADIATIVE TRAPPING OF PIONS IN FLIGHT
1992
Abstract The reaction π−A→(πb−A)γ with Tπ=10−30 MeV producing a π− bound in the nucleus is studied to see its viability as an instrument to produce deeply bound pionic atoms in nuclei. We obtain cross sections of the order of tens of μb/ (sr MeV) for the production of the 1s and 2p states of 208Pb and negligible background from radiative pion capture and the other sources. The negligible background expected in the present reaction is unique among all other reactions so far proposed. The cross sections obtained are three orders of magnitude bigger than those in the best electromagnetic reactions previously proposed. The small background, the large cross sections and the present available flu…
Modulation by peripheral opioids of basal and distension-stimulated gastric acid secretion in the rat.
1992
1. The influence of opioids in modulating gastric acid secretory responses has been investigated in the continuously perfused stomach of the anaesthetized rat. 2. Intravenous administration of morphine (0.75-3 mg kg-1) or the peripherally acting enkephalin analogue, BW443C (0.75-3 mg kg-1), substantially augmented acid secretion in basal conditions. These effects were significantly inhibited by the opioid antagonists naloxone (1 mg kg-1) and the peripherally acting N-methylnalorphine (2 mg kg-1). When administered alone, neither opioid antagonist influenced basal acid output. 3. Acid secretory responses to different levels of gastric distension (5-20 cmH2O) were significantly and dose-depen…

In the period studied there were 37 cases of infectious meningitis (11 Neisseria meningitidis (29.7%), 7 H. influenzae (18.9%), 3 S. pneumoniae (8.1%), 16 other (43.2%)), and 117 cases of acute aseptic meningitis syndrome (12 mumps virus (10.3%), 3 Borrelia burgdorferi (7.7%), 3 FSME (2.6%), 2 herpes simplex virus, 91 other (77.8%)). Sixty-six percent of the patients were male. Of the infants with infectious meningitis, 68% were und…
Klinische Bedeutung des Hepatitis-B-Virus-DNS-Nachweises im Serum von Kindern mit chronischer Hepatitis B
1992
206 sera from 172 children with chronic hepatitis B infection were tested for HBV DNA by dot blot hybridization. 111 were positive and 95 negative for HBV DNA. 103 (78.6%) of the positive patients had HBeAg and 5 (7.7%) anti-HBe. In 60 (92.3%) of the anti-HBe positive sera no HBV DNA could be detected. Children with elevated liver enzymes had HBV DNA in 80.1%, whereas in 71.6% of the chronic HBsAg carriers with normal liver enzymes no HBV DNA was found. In 87 of the 95 dot blot negative patients polymerase chain reaction was performed. 73 (83.9%) children of this group were HBV DNA positive. All HBeAg positive patients and those with elevated aminotransferases had HBV DNA in their serum. 56…
Numerical Taxonomy of Pseudomonads Isolated from Water, Sediment and Eels
1992
Summary A numerical taxonomic study was performed on 129 pseudomonad isolates from aquatic environments. 67 out of 98 field strains were isolated from water and sediment samples from Albufera lake, a hypereutrophic lake near Valencia, and 31 strains came from an eel hatchery. 10 clusters were formed at 84% similarity level when the Sokal-Michener similarity coefficient was used. Five clusters were designated as Pseudomonas putida (16 strains), P. fluorescens biotype I (9 strains), P. pseudoalcaligenes (11 strains), P. stutzen (4 strains) and Shewanella putrefaciens (3 strains). A subcluster of 7 strains (out of 15) was ascribed to the species Xanthomonas maltophilia , while the other strain…
Purification of a glucose-binding protein from rat liver nuclei. Evidence for a role in targeting of nuclear mRNP to nuclear pore complex.
1992
A nuclear carbohydrate-binding protein with a molecular mass of 67 kDa (CBP67), which is specific for glucose residues, was purified to essential homogeneity from rat liver nuclear extracts. This protein could also be isolated from nuclear ribonucleoprotein (RNP) complexes by extraction in the presence of 0.6 M or 2 M NaCl, but it was absent in polysomal RNP complex. The binding of the purified protein, which has an isoelectric point of 7.3, to glucose-containing glycoconjugates depends on the presence of Ca2+ and Mg2+. Using closed nuclear envelope vesicles as a system to study nuclear transport of RNA, it was shown that both entrapped polysomal mRNA and nuclear RNA precursors are readily …
Adrenoceptor-mediated effects on calcium channel currents are antagonized by 5?-(N-ethyl)-carboxamido-adenosine in guinea-pig atrial cells
1992
In guinea-pig atrial myocytes, the effects of the adenosine analogue 5′-(N-ethyl)-carboxamido-adenosine (NECA) in the presence of isoprenaline (ISO) on Ca2+ channel activity were analyzed. Single Ca2+ channel currents were recorded from cell-attached patches by application of several hundred 100 ms depolarizing steps. Under control conditions, burstlike activity of channel openings during some depolarizing steps were followed by variably long periods of quiescence (blank sweeps). During superfusion with ISO (100 nmol/l), ensemble-averaged (mean) current was increased by about 150%. The underlying mechanism was found to be a significant increase in the channel availability, defined as the ra…
Continent urinary diversion in childhood
1992
Continence and a positive body image are important, especially to the adolescent patient. Since 1964 we have used ureterosigmoidostomy and have achieved a complete continence rate of 92.3%. The creation of a low-pressure reservoir by antimesenteric splitting of the recto-sigmoid eliminated many of the shortcomings of ureterosigmoidostomy. This procedure is termed the sigma-rectum pouch and has been applied in six children to date. Mainz-pouch bladder augmentation or substitution has been performed in 20 children, 17 of whom are completely continent. The results of the modified Young Dees procedure were disappointing. In three children, conversion into a continent diversion was necessary. Al…
EVALUATION OF THE COLOR OF SOME SPANISH UNIFLORAL HONEY TYPES AS A CHARACTERIZATION PARAMETER
1992
Abstract The color of 7 types of Spanish unifloral honey from rosemary, orange blossom, lavender, eucalyptus, sunflower, heather, and honeydew was Investigated for Its potential use as a characterization parameter. Colors were estimated by visual comparison with a Lovlbond 1000 Instrument, the readings of which were transformed Into Pfund units. As an alternative method, the transmittances of liquid samples at selected wavelengths were measured, trlstlmulus values were calculated, and chromatic coordinates In the CIE-1931 (x,y,L) and CIE-1976 (L*a*b*) color spaces were determined. The correlation coefficient between x and the Pfund grading was 0.958, but visual comparisons proved to be less…
Comparison of the contractile effects of endothelin-1 and sarafotoxin S6b in goat isolated cerebral arteries
1992
1. The effects of endothelium-derived endothelin-1 and snake venom-derived sarafotoxin S6b, peptides with striking structural and functional similarities, were examined and compared in isolated middle cerebral arteries of goats. 2. Endothelin-1 and sarafotoxin S6b contracted cerebral arteries in a concentration-dependent manner. The potency of endothelin-1 (EC50 = 4.9 (3.9-6.2) x 10(-10) M) was about ten times higher than that of sarafotoxin S6b (EC50 = 5.5 (4.4-6.9) x 10(-9) M). The tension returned to basal values after repeated washings and contraction with endothelin-1 could be reproduced. Endothelin-1 and sarafotoxin S6b induced further contraction in arteries precontracted with prosta…
High-resolution photoacoustic Raman spectroscopy of gases
1992
A high-resolution photoacoustic Raman spectroscopy experiment is described. The resolution achieved by using two single-mode pulsed lasers is about 0.0054 cm −1 (full width at half maximum intensity). The experiment was tested first on the v 1 /2v 2 bands of CO 2 and gave an increase of at least about one order of magnitude in the signal-to-noise ratio with respect to stimulated Raman spectroscopy at low pressure (ca. 10 Torr ≃ 1.3 kPa). The sensitivity is also demonstrated by the study of the weak hot band v 1 +v 2 −v 2 of CO 2 . In both cases, the experimental line shape is well reproduced by taking into account Doppler and collisional effects. A comparison with CARS spectra was also made
Increased thromboxane biosynthesis in type IIa hypercholesterolemia.
1992
BACKGROUND Increased platelet thromboxane (TX)A2 production has been described in type IIa hypercholesterolemia. To verify the relevance of these capacity-related measurements to the actual rate of TXA2 biosynthesis in vivo, we studied the urinary excretion of its major enzymatic metabolites in 46 patients with type IIa hypercholesterolemia and 20 age-matched controls. METHODS AND RESULTS Urinary 11-dehydro-TXB2 and 2,3-dinor-TXB2 were measured by previously validated radioimmunoassays. The excretion rate of 11-dehydro-TXB2 was significantly (p less than 0.001) higher in patients (68.7 +/- 35.1 ng/hr, mean +/- SD) than in controls (22.4 +/- 9.4 ng/hr), with metabolite excretion greater tha…

Calorimetric investigation of the complex formation between surfactants and α-, β- and γ-cyclodextrins
1992
Abstract A calorimetric technique has been used to study complex formation between α-, β- and γ-cyclodextrins (αCD, βCD and γCD) and some surfactants (sodium dodecylsulphate (SDS), hexadecyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and p-(1,1,3,3-tetramethylbutyl) phenoxypoly(oxyethyleneglycol) (Triton X-100)). The experimental data indicate that some complexes (SDS-αCD, SDS-βCD and CTAB-αCD) are very stable and allow direct determination of their stoichiometry and molar enthalpy of complex formation. Those for other complexes closely fit a model based on an equilibrium reaction between surfactant, cyclodextrin and a single complex. According to the model, data analysis allows determination of the …
Free and bound chlorophenols in kraft pulp bleaching effluents
1992
Abstract Free (F; hexane extractable) and chemically bound (B; alkali extractable) chlorophenols, catechols and guaiacols were measured from effluents of the C and E stages of chlorobleaching of kraft softwood pulp. Ratio B/F was in moste cases nearly one, but for tetrachloroguaiacol B/F was 20 in C and 2.70 in E stage. Organically bound chlorine (OCl) in chlorophenols was less than one percent of the total AOX (Adsorbable Organic Halogen) emitted.
ACELLULAR PERTUSSIS VACCINE COMPOSED OF GENETICALLY INACTIVATED PERTUSSIS TOXIN: SAFETY AND IMMUNOGENICITY IN 12- TO 24- AND 2-TO 4-MONTH-OLD CHILDREN
1992
To determine whether a nontoxic derivative of pertussis toxin obtained by recombinant DNA technology, PT-9K/129G, is a good candidate for a new pertussis vaccine, we examined the safety and the immunogenicity in children of a vaccine containing 15 micrograms of PT-9K/129G protein and 0.5 mg of aluminum hydroxide per dose. Fifty-three children 12 to 24 months of age and 21 infants aged 2 to 4 months were injected with two and three doses, respectively. The vaccine did not induce significant local or systemic reactions and elicited an increase of antibody titer in more than 98% of the children. The geometric mean of the toxin-neutralizing titers increased after each dose and was 85 units in c…

Synthesis and structural study of NaTi2(PO4)3-NaSn2(PO4)3 solid solutions. I. The effect of composition on lattice parameters
1992
Abstract Compounds NaM2IV(PO4)3 with NZP-type structure present a different behavior depending on the nature of MIV. For MIV = Ti and Zr the structure shows the space group R3c, whereas for MIV = Sn the space group is R3. Differences in behavior of NaTi2(PO4)3 - NaSn2(PO4)3 solid solutions are discussed in relation to the composition. The variation of the lattice parameters with composition in NaTi2−xSnx(PO4)3 (0 1. The structure of the compound with x = 1 (NaSnTi(PO4)3) has been determined applying the Rietveld method to deconvolute the powder x-ray diffraction profile.
Hepatitis B Virus DNA in Liver Tissue of Chronic HBsAg Carriers in Childhood and Its Relationship to Other Viral Markers
1992
The aim of the study was to examine the state of hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA in liver tissue of 103 children with chronic hepatitis B aged 0.5-18 years to detect free and integrated viral sequences by Southern blot hybridization. HBV DNA was found in 74 patients. Seventy-two were seropositive for hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) and two had anti-HBe antibodies. Integrated sequences could be demonstrated in two children. One of them had only integrated HBV DNA and was anti-HBe seropositive. The other one presented both free and integrated viral sequences and developed seroconversion from HBeAg to anti-HBe 5 months after biopsy. In 29 hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) carriers, no HBV DNA coul…

Multiple copies of SUC4 regulatory regions may cause partial de-repression of invertase synthesis in Saccharomyces cerevisiae.
1992
Transformation to generate multiple copies of regulatory DNA sequences has been used to study the interactions between regulatory proteins and their target sequences, since a high copy number of these sequences may titrate trans-acting regulatory proteins. We have analyzed the synthesis of invertase in yeast strains carrying different SUC genes transformed with the multiple-copy plasmid pSH143, a derivative of pJDB207 containing the promoter and upstream regulatory sequences of SUC4. The results obtained seem to be strain dependent. Under repressing conditions a high copy number of SUC4 promoter regions may cause increased expression of the invertase genes resulting in the synthesis of exte…
Double modulation sideband spectroscopy: μ0, μ24, and μ44 of 28SiH4
1992
Abstract The linear Stark effect within the ν 2 ν 4 dyad of the main isotopomer of silane, 28 SiH 4 , has been investigated by applying the saturation technique as well as IR-IR double resonance. From 35 transitions, two vibration-induced dipole moment parameters and the centrifugal distortion moment have been determined as μ 0 = 1.357(12) × 10 −5 D, μ 24 = 2.391(31) × 10 −2 D, and μ 44 = −1.261(17) × 10 −2 D employing the Stark coefficients calculated by the procedure of Loete.
DNA image cytometry
1992
In 68 patients the DNA content of tumor cells was measured by image cytometry after resection of the rectum because of cancer. In the DNA histogram a differentiation between diploid (n = 19), polyploid (n = 24), hypotriploid (n = 17), and hypertriploid (n = 8) tumors was possible. The best relapse-free survival time was found in patients with diploid tumors. The prognosis worsened from polyploid to hypotriploid and was worse in hypertriploid tumors. Testing for a prognostic advantage of diploid over aneuploid tumors without adjustment for additional factors simply by means of the log-rank statistic gave a (one-sided) P of 0.1013. In a multivariate analysis the degree of differentiation turn…

The stability and functional properties of proteoliposomes mixed with dextran derivatives bearing hydrophobic anchor groups
1992
Liposomes composed of Escherichia coli phospholipid were coated with polysaccharides bearing hydrophobic palmitoyl anchors. The effect on the stability of liposomes without or with integral membrane proteins was investigated. A high concentration of hydrophobized dextrans protected the liposomes against detergent degradation, decreased the fluidity of the membranes, prevented fusion of the liposomes and enhanced their stability. Proteoliposomes containing beef heart cytochrome-c oxidase and the lactose transport carrier of E. coli were similarly affected by coating with the dextrans. Under these conditions both membrane proteins were still active. Long-term stability of the coated liposomes…
