Antidepressant and anxiolytic effects of alprazolam versus the conventional. antidepressant desipramine and the anxiolytic diazepam in the forced swi…

1992

The antidepressant and anxiolytic effects of alprazolam were compared to those of desipramine, diazepam and buspirone in the forced swim test. Subchronic alprazolam induced a reduction in immobility similar to that of desipramine in 'non-pretested' and 'pretested' rats. In 'non-pretested' rats, the anti-immobility effect of desipramine was potentiated by diazepam and alprazolam, given before subchronic desipramine, while the anti-immobility effect of subchronic alprazolam was counteracted by diazepam. Diazepam, administered before the pretest session, counteracted, 24 h later, the anti-immobility effect of subchronic desipramine and alprazolam; alprazolam counteracted the anti-immobility ef…

Replication origins and pause sites in sea urchin mitochondrial DNA

1992

We have used a combination of one- and two-dimensional agarose gel electrophoresis, and solution hybridization to strand-specific probes, to map the replication origin of sea urchin mitochondrial DNA and to investigate the structure of replication intermediates. These assays are consistent with replication initiating unidirectionally from the D-loop region by D-loop expansion, as in vertebrates. A prominent site of initiation of lagging-strand synthesis lies at, or near to, the boundary between the genes for ATPase 6 and COIII, which is also close to a pause site for leading-strand synthesis. These findings suggest a role for pause sites in the regulation of mitochondrial transcription and …

THREE-D SINGLETONS AND 2-D C.F.T.

1992

Two-dimensional Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten theory is extended to three dimensions, where it becomes a scalar gauge theory of the singleton type. The three-dimensional formulation involves a scalar field valued in a compact group G, a Nakanishi-Lautrup field valued in Lie (G) and Faddeev-Popov ghosts. The physical sector, characterized by the vanishing of the Nakanishi-Lautrup field, coincides with the WZNW theory of the group G. Three-dimensional space-time structure involves a generalized metric, but only its boundary values are of consequence. An alternative formulation in terms of left and right movers (in three dimensions!) is also possible.

RANDOM SEQUENTIAL ADSORPTION ON A LINEAR LATTICE: EFFECT OF DIFFUSIONAL RELAXATION

1992

In this paper, the authors offer phenomenological arguments, supported by numerical Monte Carlo data, suggesting that the asymptotic large-time behavior of the coverage in the 1D lattice deposition of k-mers with k {gt} 3, accompanied by k-mer diffusion, is governed by the same mean-field dynamics as the lattice chemical reaction kA {yields} inert. The latter reaction is considered to occur with partial probability. The coverage in the deposition process approaches full saturation for any nonzero diffusion rate, and the void fraction decreases according to the power-law t{sup {minus}1/(k{minus}1)}.

Excitons and nonlinear optical spectra in conjugated polymers.

1992

Excitons in conjugated polymers are studied theoretically in the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model supplemented by long-range Coulomb interactions. The relationship between exciton energies and basic interaction parameters is clarified. Linear and third-order nonlinear optical susceptibilities (two-photon absorption, electroabsorption, and third-harmonic generation) have been calculated, elucidating the significance of singlet and triplet excitons and unbound electron-hole pairs. Using only moderate interaction strength, various experiments in polydiacetylene can be interpreted in a consistent way

Singlet and triplet excitons in conjugated polymers.

1992

Exciton states in conjugated polymers are theoretically studied in the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model supplemented by long-range Coulomb interactions. The relationship between exciton energies and basic interaction parameters is clarified, demonstrating the special nature of one-dimensional excitons. The binding energies of the lowest singlet and triplet excitons depend sensitively upon the on-site Coulomb energy. Relevant experiments in polydiacetylene can be explained by the present model using moderate interaction strength.

Diffusional Relaxation in Dimer Deposition

1992

In deposition of dimers on a 1D lattice substrate, we find by analytical arguments, supported by numerical Monte Carlo simulations, that the effect of added diffusional relaxation is to allow the full, saturation coverage, 100%, for large times. This limiting coverage is approached according to the ~ 1/√t power law preceded, for fast diffusion, by the mean-field crossover regime with the intermediate ~ 1/t behavior.

Instability of cuboctahedral copper clusters.

1992

Equilibrium structures of copper clusters up to 10 000 atoms are studied using molecular-dynamics and effective-medium theory. Icosahedral closed-shell clusters are most stable up to \ensuremath{\sim}2500 atoms and the Wulff polyhedra are favored for larger clusters. Cuboctahedral closed-shell clusters up to \ensuremath{\sim}2000 atoms are unstable. They undergo a nondiffusive transition to an icosahedral structure at low temperatures and melt directly above the fcc-cluster-melting temperature. The melting temperature decreases with decreasing cluster size but not as deeply as has been reported for pure metals.

Synthesis of β-d-mannosides from β-d-glucosides via an intramolecular Sn2 reaction at C-2

1992

Abstract The selective synthesis of β- d -mannosides was achieved by first synthesizing β- d -glucosides that carry a N -phenylcarbamoyl protecting group at O-3. These derivatives were transformed into the corresponding β- d -mannosides by intramolecular nucleophilic substitution with inversion of configuration at C-2, the O -triflyl group being the leaving group. Subsequent intramolecular attack of the neighboring carbamoyl group resulted in the formation of the 2,3-carbonate of the desired β d -mannoside.

Redox regulation of enzymatic activity and proteolytic susceptibility of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase fromEuglena gracilis.

1992

The activity of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase fromEuglena gracilis decays steadily when exposed to agents that induce oxidative modification of cysteine residues (Cu(2+), benzofuroxan, disulfides, arsenite, oxidized ascorbate). Inactivation takes place with a concomitant loss of cysteine sulfhydryl groups and dimerization of large subunits of the enzyme. 40% activity loss induced by the vicinal thiol-reagent arsenite is caused by modification of a few neighbor residues while the almost complete inactivation achieved with disulfides is due to extensive oxidation leading to formation of mixed disulfides with critical cysteines of the protein. In most cases oxidative inactiva…

SPHINGOLIPID TRANSPORT FROM THE TRANSGOLGI NETWORK TO THE APICAL SURFACE IN PERMEABILIZED MDCK CELLS

1992

AbstractWe have measured the transport of de novo synthesized fluorescent analogs of sphingomyelin and glucosylceramide from the trans-Golgi network (TGN) to the apical membrane in basolaterally permeabilized Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cells. Sphingolipid transport was temperature, ATP and cytosol dependent. Introduction of bovine serum albumin (BSA), which binds fluorescent sphingolipid monomer, into the permeabilized cells, did not affect lipid transport to the apical membrane. Both fluorescent sphingomyelin and glucosylceramide analogs were localized to the lumenal bilayer leaflet of isolated TGN-derived vesicles. These results strongly suggest that both sphingolipids are transport…

Volatile compounds extracted from polypropylene pellets by hot water: influence of the level of the peroxide agents

1992

To improve the quality level of plastic packaging materials, we determined the influence of chemical degradation of polypropylene (PP) upon the amount of volatile components extracted by hot water from PP pellets. Two formulations were analyzed and compared: PP CR (degraded) and PP (not degraded). After Likens-Nickerson's extraction of the pellets and concentration of the extract, an HPLC fractionation was made to collect three fractions of different poiarities: a pentane (A), a dichloromethane (B), and an ether (C) fraction. Fractions (B) and (C) were olfactively evaluated by GC sniffing to be most interesting. Their analysis by GC/MS coupling allowed the identification of different compon…

Conformal Symmetry and Differential Regularization of the Three-Gluon Vertex

1992

The conformal symmetry of the QCD Lagrangian for massless quarks is broken both by renormalization effects and the gauge fixing procedure. Renormalized primitive divergent amplitudes have the property that their form away from the overall coincident point singularity is fully determined by the bare Lagrangian, and scale dependence is restricted to $\delta$-functions at the singularity. If gauge fixing could be ignored, one would expect these amplitudes to be conformal invariant for non-coincident points. We find that the one-loop three-gluon vertex function $\Gamma_{\mu\nu\rho}(x,y,z)$ is conformal invariant in this sense, if calculated in the background field formalism using the Feynman ga…

The Crystal Barrel data acquisition system

1992

The main detector components of the Crystal Barrel (CBAR) experiment at the Low Energy Antiproton Ring (LEAR) at CERN are two proportional wire chambers, a jet drift chamber and an electromagnetic calorimeter composed of 1380 CsI(Tl) crystals, with a total of 4380 analog channels. A description is given of the use of distributed VME-based microcomputers to collect data from the various subdetectors and to merge the full event information in a global event builder. At this level the data are transferred to a mu VAX for tape storage and monitoring. >

High-performance Mössbauer spectroscopy: Criteria, possibilities, limitations

1992

Increasing attention is being paid to non-conventional Mossbauer methods in view of the extension of Mossbauer Spectroscopy (MS) to a broadening field of applications. With such long-lasting experiments the shortening of the measuring time required for a given statistical significance is of major practical importance. It is shown that the statistical utility rateu allows one to determine which experimental parameters have a primary role, and it also enables sucessive optimization. It is pointed out for various MS measurements that the strategy for improving the experimental performance is strongly dependent on the given problem. As examples, time-differential Mossbauer measurements and conv…

Tetra-p-tolyl-verbindungen p-Tol4Si und p-Tol4Ge: Ein beitrag zur konfiguration der tetraaryl-methan-analoga Ar4M (M = C, Si, Ge, Sn, Pb)

1992

Abstract p-Tol4Si and p-Tol4Ge have been obtained from the reaction of p-TolLi with SiCl4 and of p-TolMgBr with GeCl4, respectively. The crystal structures have been determined and compared with those of the homologous compounds p-Tol4Sn and p-Tol4Pb. The latter two molecules (space group I 4 ) exhibit a S4 axis running between the aromatic groups and are shortened along this axis: all four p-Tol groups are closer together than in an undistorted tetrahedron. In the cases of the silane and germane (space group Pc), the tetrahedron is lengthened along one of the bond axes CM: only three of the four p-Tol groups are closer together, and the set up of a special molecular symmetry is blocked. Plant colonization of bare peat surface - relative importance of seed availability and soil

1992

A field survey on two former peat harvesting sites of similar successional age revealed a marked difference in species composition and a 30-fold difference in biomass of the established vegetation Based on this observation, a field experiment in which the substrate was changed between sites was conducted to examine whether the differences in revegetation were mainly a consequence of differences in seed supply or in substrate quality After three growing seasons, a many hundred-fold difference in plant biomass existed between the transplanted and control plots with the same substrate, but only a small difference between the plots with a different substrate within the site Biological activity …

Phenotype traits associated with different alleles at the RPS5 locus in Saccharomyces cerevisiae

1992

The RPS5 gene has been characterised through its ability to reduce invertase production by the SUC5 gene. In this paper we show that RPS5 acts by maintaining low levels of SUC5 mRNA. We also show that RPS5 acts on the SUC1 and SUC4 genes but not on SUC2 and SUC3, which are members of the SUC family. RPS5 also shows a pleiotropic effect on the amount of mitochondrial cytochromes.

Molecular recognition processes at functionalized lipid surfaces: a neutron reflectivity study

1992

The specific binding of proteins to functionalized monolayers on aqueous subphases has been characterized by neutron reflectivity measurements. As a model for the investigation of a recognition process on a molecular length scale, streptavidin (SA) and biotin were chosen because of the high specific affinity between them. Reflectivities from the aqueous (NaCl/H2O or NaCl/D2O) surfaces covered with the biotin-lipid monolayers before and after the adsorption of proteins were collected with a novel, fixed wavelength liquid surface neutron reflectometer. In quantitative terms, binding was found to occur at a biotin surface concentration as low as 1 molecule/1250 A2 (compare to ∼ 1 molecule/40 A…

Asymptotic structure factor for the two-component Ginzburg-Landau equation

1992

We derive an analytic form for the asymptotic time-dependent structure factor for the two-component Ginzburg-Landau equation in arbitrary dimensions. This form is in reasonable agreement with results from numerical simulations in two dimensions. A striking feature of our analytic form is the absence of Porod's law in the tail. This is a consequence of the continuous symmetry of the Hamiltonian, which inhibits the formation of sharp domain walls.

Problems of electron detection in Depth-Selective Conversion Electron Mössbauer Spectroscopy

1992

Applications of Depth-Selective Conversion Electron Mossbauer Spectroscopy (DCEMS) are limited by the long measuring times needed for collecting sufficient data statistics. To shorten the recording time, the background should be reduced and the detection efficiency for conversion electrons should be improved. For57Co/57Fe DCEMS, systematic studies were performed to investigate the origin, shape, and structure of the background components in DCEMS data distributions for various samples using channeltrons and low-noise scintillation counters as electron detectors.

Abstract A flow injection analysis procedure for the turbidimetric determination of promethazine is proposed. The sample solution is injected directly into the carrier reagent stream, which is composed of 1.16 × 10 −3 M bromophenol blue at pH 1.20. The calibration graph is linear over the range 25–197 ppm of promethazine. The influence of some foreign substances was also investigated. Detection of banned drugs in sport by micellar liquid chromatography

1992

Abstract A rapid method for the determination of banned drugs in sport (including stimulants, anabolic steroids and diuretics) based on micellar liquid chromatography is proposed. The mobile phase is an aqueous solution of a surfactant (sodium dodecyl sulphate in this instance) and the stationary phase is octadecylsilica. The retention parameters of the drugs were established and the effect of a mobile phase organic modifier on the chromatographic behaviour of the compounds was studied. Improvements in efficiency were achieved by control of the temperature of the mobile phase. This method allows the direct injection of urine samples for the determination of drugs excreted free in urine: ami…

Fluctuations in mesoscopic systems

1992

Abstract Electronic wavefunctions in weakly disordered systems have been studied within the Anderson model of localization. The eigenstates calculated by means of the Lanczos diagonalization algorithm display characteristic spatial fluctuations that can be described by a multifractal analysis. For increasing disorder or energy the observed curdling of the wavefunction reflects the stronger localization, but no exponential decay can be observed. This is reflected in the set of generalized fractal dimensions and the singularity spectrum of the fractal measure.
