Vertical distribution and rotifer concentrations in the chemocline of meromictic lakes

1983

The vertical distribution of planktonic rotifers has been analysed in relation to season in several meromictic lakes; a coastal lagoon with sea-water intrusion and three dissolution lakes from two karstic systems. Two species, Filinia hofmanni and a form of Anuraeopsis fissa have been found to be more or less restricted to the chemocline or adjacent strata any time they occurred. Many species common in the upper water layers developed large populations near or in the chemocline and more strikingly in summer. Some species had two vertical maxima (one in the surface or the thermocline and another near the chemocline), while others successively shifted their maxima between the upper layers and…

Phosphorylated intermediate of a transport ATPase and activity of protein kinase in membranes from corn roots

1983

A maize-root microsomal fraction was enriched in ATPase by treatment with Triton X-100. This activity, which reached 1.2-2.0/mumol Pi x min-1 x mg protein-1, was specific for ATP, very slightly stimulated by K+, inhibited by orthovanadate and diethylstilbestrol, resistant to oligomycin and azide, and had a Km of 1.2 mM MgATP. Incubation of the microsomal fraction with [gamma 32-P]ATP followed by electrophoresis in acid conditions revealed the presence of several phosphoproteins. The phosphorylation of a 110000-Mr polypeptide reached the steady-state level in less than 5 s and rapidly turned over the phosphate group. The phosphorylation level was an hyperbolic function of the [ATP] with a Km…

Platelet Function and Coagulation in Secondary Prevention of Ischemic Heart Disease

1983

The possibility of secondary prevention. of myocardial infarction using drugs as anticoagulants and platelet antiaggregants attracted much attention in the last few years. Results obtained with anticoagulants until now, however, did not always correspond to expectations and were quite contradictory although recent studies show that such treatment is quite effective1 and also that the overall incidence of brain injuries following prolonged anticoagulant treatment does not increase: in fact a certain increase of brain haemorrhages is counterbalanced by a decrease of thrombotic events2.

Biosynthesis of the Collagen-like C1q Molecule and its Receptor Functions for Fc and Polyanionic Molecules on Macrophages

1983

At the beginning of the nineteenth century, knowledge of immunity was limited to a few practical methods based on empirical observations, e.g., the observation by Jenner in 1798 that inoculation with cowpox material induced an immunity to smallpox. The discoveries by Louis Pasteur and Robert Koch that microorganisms caused fermentations and were responsible for a number of infectious diseases, greatly advanced the concepts of susceptibility and immunity in a limited number of diseases. In the late nineteenth century, the complement system was discovered by Fodor(1887), Nuttall(1888), and Buchner (1889a, b) through studying the bactericidal action of blood serum. It was recognized that killi…

Biochemical analysis of class II antigens. Identification of a two- and a three-polypeptide chain complex of I-A locus equivalent molecules in the ra…

1983

The polypeptide chain composition of class II antigens from LEW rat spleen cells was studied utilizing cross-reactive mouse alloantiserum A. TH anti-A.TL (specificity anti-Iak) and the monoclonal antibodies MRC-OX6 and MRC-OX3 for immunoprecipitation. Two-dimensional gel mapping of A. TH anti-A. TL immunoprecipitates revealed that, as in the mouse, two groups of class II antigens exist corresponding to I-A and I-E locus equivalent structures. In the absence of reducing agents three monomeric chains α, 36 kDa (p36); γ, 33 kDa (p33); and β, 23 kDa (p23), were detected for I-A equivalent antigens, whereas I-E equivalent molecules separated into five monomeric chains: α, 37 kDa (p37); γ, 33 kDa…

Early Auditory Evoked Potentials (EAEP) in Neurosurgery — A New Method for Diagnosis and Localization of Posterior Fossa Tumors in Childhood

1983

Auditory stimuli of suprathreshold intensity (above 60 dBHL) evoke about 15 waves: an early series (EAEP) during the initial 10 milliseconds (ms), a middle latency sequence (8 to 50 ms) and the longer latency cortical potentials (50 – 300 ms). PICTON et al. (1974) made a survey of all three potential groups. Only the EAEP (waves I to IV) are generated in the infratentorial part of the brain and reflect progressive activation of the auditory tracts and nuclei (Fig. 1): Wave I is assumed to originate at the distal part of the acoustic nerve, wave II in the medulla, wave III in the caudal and wave IV in the rostral pons and wave V in the midbrain (STARR and ACHOR, 1975; STOCKARD and ROSSITER, …

On a relation between massive Yang-Mills theories and dual string models

1983

The relations between mass terms in Yang-Mills theories, projective representations of the group of gauge transformations, boundary conditions on vector potentials and Schwinger terms in local charge algebra commutation relations are discussed. The commutation relations (with Schwinger terms) are similar to the current algebra commutation relations of the SU(N) extended dual string model.

Atomistic Calculations of Positron Surface States

1983

We report on the results of an atomistic, discrete-lattice calculation of positron surface states on the three principal surfaces of Al and Cu. We are able to (i) accurately reproduce the observed values and anisotropy of the binding energies, and (ii) predict the surface state life times. Furthermore, we calculate (iii) the positron lateral diffusion constant, and find it considerably enhanced over the bulk value. We also investigate (iv) the positron trapping at surface vacancies, and (v) the effect of ordered chemisorbed monolayers of oxygen. We find that the oxidation lowers the binding energy and makes the surface state unstable with respect to positronium emission on Al (100) and Al (…

Conformational preferences of side-chain protected amino acid residues and their impact in peptide synthesis

1983

Using the host-guest technique, tentative scales for the helix-inducing power and the β-structure-forming potential of various side-chain protected amino acid residues in trifluoro-ethanol are established mainly by CD measurements. The generally lower tendency for β-structure formation of the host–guest peptides compared to that of the host peptide is discussed. The influence of these conformational features on the solubility of the peptides is also pointed out.

Positron Production in Heavy Ion-Atom Collisions

1983

The question of pair creation in strong electrical fields is a very old problem. Already in 1929, within the framework of the new Dirac theory of the electron1, Klein considered the behaviour of an electron wave with a total energy E = ET + mec2 impinging on a one-dimensional step barrier potential Vo> mec2/e (fig. 1a). If the kinetic energy ET of an electron travelling on the z-axis from left to right is less than eVo, then for z>0 an exponentially damped wave function is expected as a solution of the Schrodinger equation. According to Klein’s calculations with the Dirac equation, this behaviour was also found for eVo-2mec2 <ET<eVo, but for a kinetic energy ET<eVo-2mec2 the wave function s…

Statistical physics: Some basic principles of fluctuation and noise theory

1983

Abstract Models have traditionally played a significant role in statistical mechanics. In view of the complexity of the system which statistical mechanics attempt to describe, this is not at all surprising. The study of simplified models has frequently revealed the underlying mathematical structure of many physical questions and in so doing the study of models has contributed directly to a clarification of several paradoxes which beset statistical mechanics. In this paper some of the models which appear to be useful for the discussion of non-equilibrium phenomena are examined in some detail. As usual these models are extremely simplified versions of the actual situations. It is, finally, as…

Polarizability effects in electronic and muonic atoms

1983

TheS state polarizability shifts are derived from the virtual forward Compton scattering in the unretarded dipole approximation. In the non-relativistic limit ω N /2m≪1, the shift is proportional to the photonuclear sum rule σ−3/2, while in the relativistic limit ω N /2m≫1 it is proportional to a logarithmically weighted σ−2 sum rule. In both cases, the characteristic momentum transfer is (2mω N )1/2. The non-locality from the intermediate lepton propagation removes the divergence typical of the static limit. Explicit formulas for the shifts are given for both the relativistic and non-relativistic limits.

Llenguatge, veritat i lògica [Pròleg]

1983
