Photoconductivity and photovoltaic effect in indium selenide

1983

Transport and phototransport properties of crystalline indium monoselenide (InSe) doped with a variety of elements are reported. Measured mobilities, lifetimes, and effective diffusion lengths of photoexcited carriers are used to interpret electrical and photovoltaic properties of several different structures. These include p‐n junctions, bismuth/p‐type InSe, platinum/n‐type InSe, and indium tin oxyde (ITO)/p‐type InSe. External solar efficiencies of the best devices are between 5% and 6%. The influence on the efficiency of the various parameters is evaluated, and ways of improvement are discussed.

Sensitive laser spectroscopy on trapped barium ions by quenching with hydrogen

1983

The sensitivity of laser spectroscopy on barium ions stored in a radio frequency quadrupole trap was drastically increased by using hydrogen for quenching the optically pumped metastable states. The attained fluorescence intensity per ion permits the detection of single ions. The method will be applied to environmental studies on actinides.

DNA Content and Synthesis in Several Tissues and Variation of Moulting Hormone-Level in Gryllus bimaculatus DEG (Ensifera, Insecta)

1983

The mode of growth of several tissues in Gryllus bimaculatus was investigated during postembryonic development by cytophotometric methods. In contrast to the situation in holo- metabolous insects, the tissues growing by endomitosis reach only moderate levels of polyploidy. In this case the growth of tissues is achieved by mitotic divisions of small cells with subsequent polyploidization. The time courses of DNA synthesis were measured within the 3rd and, for comparison, the 8th larval instar by incorporation of labelled thymidine followed by autoradiography. Hemocytes, cells of the regeneration crypts of the midgut, gonads and nervous tissue showed a continuous incorporation rate; by contra…

Frequency of cytotoxic T lymphocyte precursors to herpes simplex virus type 1 as determined by limiting dilution analysis.

1983

The conditions for establishing a limiting dilution assay to measure cytotoxic T lymphocyte precursors (CTL-P) against herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) were determined. Analysis by Poisson statistics demonstrated that the estimated frequency of HSV-1-reactive cells in the spleens of normal mice was less than 1/250,000. In contrast, mice immunized previously with infectious HSV-1 demonstrated a CTL-P frequency between 1/3,500 and 1/15,670. The generation of a maximum cytotoxic T lymphocyte response required that mice be primed in vivo with infectious virus. Immunization with inactivated virus either failed to elicit detectable CTL-P frequencies or gave frequencies markedly less than thos…

The synthesis and the phase behaviour of liquid crystalline main chain polymers are described. In these poly- and copolyesters the mesogenic units are linked by highly flexible oligodimethylsiloxane spacers. The comparison of their phase behaviour with that of polyesters known from the literature shows that dimethylsiloxane spacers as a replacement for alkyl spacers are leading to a drastic decrease of the transition temperatures. Depending on the length of the spacer glass transitions as low as −111°C can be achieved. The widths of the liquid crystalline phases thereby are retained up to a spacerlength of 13 oxydimethylsilanediyl (dimethylsiloxane) units. The homopolyesters mainly show sme…

Depressive effect of LHRH on the numbers of "synaptic" ribbons and spherules in the pineal gland of diestrous rats.

1983

Previous studies have shown that LHRH or LHRH-like substances are present in the pineal gland. In order to investigate whether exogenous LHRH may affect the pineal gland, in the present study the effects of a single dose of LHRH (1 microgram, i.p.) on pineal "synaptic" ribbons and spherules as well as serum melatonin levels were examined in diestrous Wistar rats. One hour after the injection both ribbons and spherules exhibited a statistically significant decrease in number. Serum melatonin levels were not affected. It is concluded that humoral feedback mechanisms may exist between the hypothalamus and the pineal gland.

Two cases of adynamia episodica hereditaria: In vitro investigation of muscle cell membrane and contraction parameters

1983

Membrane potentials, current-voltage relationships, and contractile parameters were studied in intact muscle cell bundles obtained from two patients with adynamia episodica hereditaria. In a normal extracellular medium, the cell membranes had resting potentials of about -80 mV and their current-voltage relationships were not significantly different from control curves. In contrast to normal muscles the afflicted cells were paralyzed in a medium having 6-10 mmol/liter potassium. The mechanisms of paralysis in the two specimens were different from each other. Many fibers from one patient were spontaneously active even in normal solution. In high potassium solution spontaneous activity was inc…

Pineal ?synaptic? ribbons and spherules during the estrous cycle in rats

1983

In previous studies pineal "synaptic" ribbons have been shown to undergo striking numerical changes under various physiological and experimental conditions and to be regulated by beta-adrenergic mechanisms. The aim of the present investigation was to study the numbers of pineal "synaptic" ribbons and spherules in Wistar rats throughout the estrous cycle and to compare them with those in males. There were no statistically significant differences in the numbers of ribbons and spherules between males and females and in the females at the different stages of the estrous cycle, indicating that the structures in question, in vivo, do not appear to be regulated by naturally occurring changes of se…

Quantitative evaluation of ethane and n-pentane as indicators of lipid peroxidation in vivo.

1983

The use of exhalation of ethane and n-pentane in experimental animals as parameters of lipid peroxidation led to an examination of pharmacokinetics of both compounds in rats. When rats were exposed, in a closed desiccator jar chamber, to a wide range of ethane concentrations, linear elimination pharmacokinetics were observed. n-Pentane, when concentrations higher than 100 ppm were applied, displayed saturation kinetics. These were formally explained by action of two competing metabolizing pathways or enzymes. Application of preexisting models could describe exhalation of both ethane and n-pentane by untreated control rats. Stimulation of lipid peroxidation by ferrous ions or by carbon tetra…

1983

Simultaneous determination of aliphatic C2−C20 carboxylic acids and their methyl esters was carried out using SE-30 and OV-351 quartz capillary columns with temperature programming. Complete resolution of all 36 components was achieved. On SE-30 the methyl ester and the corresponding free acid are eluted in turn, whereas on OV-351 acetic acid eluted after methyl octanoate, after which the Cn methyl ester and Cn-6 carboxylic acid (n>9) are eluted one after the other. A non-polar SE-30 column is better for long-chain acids giving sharp peaks without tailing, the analysis time of the mixture being less than 16 minutes. Number, Mass and Volume Distributions of Mineral Aerosol and Soils of the Sahara

1983

Abstract A direct method will be described to determine the complete mineral size distribution in aerosol (xylene-insoluble component) and soils (water-insoluble component) covering a size range from 0.01 up to 100 μm and 1000 μm radius, respectively, by using a combination of a scanning electron microscope, optical microscope and sieving. Aerosol and soil samples from the Sahara have been investigated. All mineral aerosol size distributions indicate a maximum between 0.06 and 0.08 μm radius and mineral particles have been found in the Aitken size range down to 0.02 μm radius. The concentration decrease toward larger particles is not uniform and shows considerable variations below 0.5 μm an…

The effect of the composition on the properties of?-irradiated ethylenevinyl alcohol copolymers

1983

Two ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymers (Eval E and Eval F with about 45% and 25% of ethylene respectively) have been irradiated in air in the dose range 0–200 Mrad. The irradiated samples show both crosslinking and degradation; the former effect is more relevant in the copolymer with a larger content of polyethylene. Calorimetric results show that both the crystalline and the amorphous phases are involved in the reactions initiated by the irradiation.

BIOACTIVE GLASS CERAMIC

1983

The practicability of the bioactive glass ceramic Cernvitnl® in ear surgery was tested in animals. The histological findings are presented. Over the last 3 years implants of bioactive glass ceramic were used in humans. Prostheses for the total or partial reconstruction of the ossicular chain and the reconstruction of the bony wall of the outer ear canal were fashioned. We have conducted about 300 tympanoplasties and 60 total or partial reconstructions of the bony wall of the outer ear canal. The otoscopic and functional results were satisfactory.

Hypokalemic rhabdomyolysis associated with Bartter's syndrome.

1983

Severe potassium deficiency is an uncommon cause of rhabdomyolysis. We recently treated a 45-year-old patient with myalgia, serious generalized weakness, increased serum creatine kinase and myoglobin level as well as excessive hypokalemia. Histological examination of deltoid muscle biopsy showed rhabdomyolysis. After complete recovery of muscle damage by potassium substitution Bartter's syndrome proved to be the cause of initial and persistent hypokalemia.

Wind speed and relative humidity have been the physical variables used in empirical expressions for equilibrium marine aerosol distributions. Recent formulations, which include the role of hydrostatic stability because it influences turbulent transport and entrainment of clear air from aloft, are examined on the basis of 1 um radius aerosol number density values. The aerosol data were collected along with a quite complete meteorological data set in the Northeast Atlantic during the international Joint Air Sea Interaction Experiment (JASIN-78). The 1 um number density values are normalized for generation and relative humidity influences, and analyses are performed to gain reasonable assuranc…

Effects of Inhaled Fenoterol on the Circadian Rhythm of Expiratory Flow in Allergic Bronchial Asthma

1983

Metered-dose aerosol treatment with fenoterol for three consecutive days, in eight patients suffering from allergic asthma, caused the disappearance of FEV1 and MEF50 circadian rhythm. We attribute such behavior to the suppression of the bronchomotor tone induced by fenoterol. The administration on different days of a single dose of fenoterol aerosol in another group of eight patients pointed out the variability of the effects of the drug at different hours of the day. We believe the results obtained are important for a better dosage and time distribution of the therapy with beta2 agonists.

Binding of several phenothiazine neuroleptics to a common binding site of alpha 1-acid glycoprotein, orosomucoid.

1983

The interaction of several phenothiazine neuroleptics with alpha 1-acid glycoprotein was investigated using circular dichroism and equilibrium dialysis techniques. For chlorpromazine only, one high-affinity binding site of the protein was found. The binding of the drug to this single site generated typical polyphasic extrinsic Cotton effects. Since several other phenothiazine neuroleptics gave qualitatively comparable extrinsic Cotton effects in the presence of alpha 1-acid glycoprotein and potently inhibited the binding of chlorpromazine to the single site, it was concluded that all phenothiazine derivatives investigated bound preferentially to only one common binding site of the alpha 1-a…

The effect of low pressure on a high-spin—low-spin transition

1983

Abstract The effect of low pressure ( p = 150 bar) on the high-spin (HS)—low-spin (LS) transition in [Fe x Zn 1− x (2-pic) 3 ]Cl 2 · EtOH ( x = 0.5, 1.0) was measured by Mossbauer spectroscopy and the results compared with theory. The linear dependence of the volume of the lattice on the HS fraction, which is the basic assumption of the theory, was proven by temperature dependent X-ray measurements.

Inhalation pharmacokinetics based on gas uptake studies. IV. The endogenous production of volatile compounds.

1983

A pharmacokinetic description of production, distribution and metabolism of endogenous volatile compounds is presented. This description uses the "gas uptake model" of a closed recirculated atmosphere in which experimental animals are exposed. As an example, the production rates of acetone, under different conditions of stimulation by xenobiotics, are calculated from published experimental data. The theoretical descriptions may serve as a basis for treating the problem of hydrocarbon exhalation in toxicological experiments with compounds eliciting lipid peroxidation.

LABORATORY INSTRUMENTATION TO STUDY CHANGES OF ELECTRICAL CONDUCTIVITY OF ROCKS WITH CHANGES OF FREQUENCY, TEMPERATURE AND PRESSURE*

1983

A laboratory instrument was developed to investigate the electrical properties of rock samples with respect to changes of frequency, temperature and pressure. The instrument can be used to obtain general trends and typical values for geological media. It should be of particular interest in geothermal studies and research in the geophysical properties of rocks. The design intervals for quantities under investigation were 20–300°C, 10 5 -4 × 10 7 Pa and 5 × 10 −4 -10 3 Hz. Certain limitations exist on the simultaneous use of the highest values of temperature and pressure. The main features of the instrument are: analog electrical outputs recorded by an x-y recorder or observed on a scope with…
