Abstract The crystal structure of 2,2,6-trimethyl-1,3-dithia-6-aza-2-stannocane has been determined and refined to R = 0.043. The transannular 1,5-distance Sn ⋯ N = 256.6(6) pm exceeds the respective single bond by 49 pm. A comparison with analogous eight-membered rings exhibits a clear-cut correlation of such differences with angle deformations in the transition tetrahedron to trigonal-bipyramid. The axial distance SnC is 2 pm longer than the equatorial one.

Sympathetic nervous activity and the pressor effect of noradrenaline under chronic?-?-adrenoceptor blockade with labetalol in hypertension

1983

In 14 patients with essential hypertension, the influence of the alpha- and beta-adrenoceptor blocking drug labetalol on blood pressure, heart rate, plasma renin, plasma noradrenaline and pressor effect of exogenous noradrenaline was investigated during long-term treatment. During the initial four weeks of treatment, labetalol at a dose of 400 mg/day showed a slight effect only on supine blood pressure, whereas upright blood pressure was already lowered effectively after the second week of treatment (p less than 0.01). An increase in the mean dose to 850 mg/day had an additional blood pressure-lowering effect (p less than 0.001), whereby a preferential decrease of the orthostatic blood pres…

Sonographic biometry of liver and spleen size in childhood.

1983

In 194 healthy children of all ages, sonographic measurements of the liver and spleen were performed on standardized section planes and normal values established. These measurement values showed an approximately linear increase in the course of development and correlated best with the body length. For a rapid orientational evaluation of the liver size, sonographic nomograms of the individual measurements were developed. The spleen size was determined by volume calculation. On the basis of an index of liver size, which was calculated from the individual measurements, a diagram for simultaneous determination of liver and spleen size could be developed. These nomograms permit objective morphom…

Meson and isobar degrees of freedom in light nuclei

1983

The role of mesonic and isobar degrees of freedom in various electromagnetic processes is reviewed for light nuclei. Special emphasis is laid on the deuteron, which allows the cleanest answers within the non-relativistic framework. The origin of the photonuclear enhancement with respect to both exchange forces and exchange currents is discussed in detail.

Radiolabeled DNase, a potential indicator for noninvasive detection of tissue damage

1983

Pancreatic DNase I was labeled with 131I or fluorescamine and injected IV into NMRI mice bearing a sarcoma 180. Of the injected tracer, 1.5%-2% was found to accumulate per g tumor. In sections of tumor tissue DNase was localized in damaged cells in solid and necrotic tumor regions. This binding is most probably due to specific interaction of DNase with actin, an ubiquitous cytoskeletal protein. Two-component blood clearance with a rapid first component (two-thirds of applied radioactivity) was observed. The labeled tumor could easily be visualized by gamma camera imaging. The findings suggest DNase to be a potent radiopharmaceutical for imaging damaged tissue, occurring in malignant tumors …

Decomposable Measures and Measures of Information for Crisp and Fuzzy Sets

1983

Abstract There exist bijections between the decomposable informations of Kampe de Feriet and Forte (1967a) and the decomposable measures of Weber (1982). Using integrals for Archimedean decomposable operations, introduced by Weber (1982), informations and measures of this type are extended from crisp to fuzzy sets. For ∨-decomposable measures, Sugeno’s (1974) integral is used. For ∧-decomposable informations, Nguyen’s (1977) construction and a modification are discussed.

Near fatal percutaneous paraquat poisoning

1983

A fatal paraquat poisoning can occur when relatively large areas of skin are contaminated with a concentrated solution of paraquat (Gramoxone). A paraquat absorption takes place of the same magnitude as that with an equal dose per os. In the presence of mechanical or chemical lesion of the skin the percutaneous paraquat absorption is distinctly enhanced.

The pion electroproduction and the virtual-photon theory

1983

The double differential cross-section for pion electroproduction was measured for the processes p(e,π+n and12C(e,π+)12B. The proton-induced cross-section was evaluated by using the virtual-photon concept. The experimental data were used to test different formulae for the virtual-photon spectrum. We found significant deviations to a generally used formula (Dalitz-Yennie) and good agreement with a new formula (Tiator-Wright). In addition, we have measured pion production crosssections with real photons under equal kinematic conditions. Electro-and photoproduction measurements give the same results.

Hydrothermal synthesis of zeolites from rhyolitic pumice of different geological origins

1983

Abstract Twelve samples of rhyolitic pumice from widely different origins were subjected to zeolitization in standard hydrothermal conditions (solid/liquid ratio, 1 5 ; T , 95°C; reaction time, 5 h; alkaline solution 5 N NaOH). The Si Al ratio of the starting material was of special importance in that zeolites formed with Si Al ratios similar to or smaller than that of the parent material. Pumice with low SiO 2 Al 2 O 3 , and high Fe content, preferentially gave rise to zeolites with lower SiO 2 Al 2 O 3 ratio than in the case of lower Fe and higher SiO 2 Al 2 O 3 ratio.

1983

The viscosity data of moderately concentrated polystyrene solutions in trans-decalin (TD) (θ solvent, θ temperature 21°C) and toluene (TL) (good solvent) reported in Part I are discussed in terms of Graessley's entanglement theory. Under good solvent conditions, Graessley's master curve provides an excellent fit up to high shear rates, whereas in the vicinity of the θ conditions the data have to be modified by a parameter ηfric introduced by Ito and Shishido. The characteristic time of mechanical response to flow of chains approximately given by the shift factor τ0 is found in good solvents to be on the order of the Rouse relaxation time. In poor solvents, close to demixing, τ0 tends to muc…

Characterization of the trimeric, self-recognizing Geodia cydonium lectin I.

1983

A D-galactose-specific lectin I was extracted from the sponge Geodia cydonium and purified by affinity chromatography. The molecular weight of lectin I as determined by high-pressure liquid gel chromatography, was found to be 36500 +/- 1300. Disc gel electrophoresis in the presence and in the absence of sodium dodecyl sulfate showed that lectin I is a trimer composed of three different subunits (Mr: 13800, 13000 and 12200); two of the three subunits are linked by one disulfide bond. Isoelectric focusing gave a pI of 5.6 for the native molecule and a pI of 4.4 and of 7.4 for the subunits. The three subunits carry carbohydrate side chains, composed of D-galactose (94%) and of arabinose (5%). …

Effect of intravenous flecainide on atrial vulnerability in man.

1983

Sixteen patients were investigated by means of programmed atrial stimulation at two different driving rates: 100 and 120/min. All patients had an increased atrial vulnerability at both driving rates. After intravenous flecainide application (1 mg/kg body weight as a bolus followed by the same amount given by infusion over a period of 20 min) the increased vulnerability was abolished in 11 and 9 patients respectively. In the remaining patients the rate of induced atrial tachyarrhythmia decreased. These findings correlate with a significant prolongation of the effective refractory period of the right atrium and a significant shortening of the relative refractory period of the right atrium. It…

Morphology and chronology of ischemic mucosal changes in the small intestine

1983

The morphology and chronology of an absolute ischemia was investigated on the small intestine of man and rat. It could be shown that the morphogenesis of ischemic damage to the intestinal mucosa in man does not differ from that in the rat. However, there are crucial and in therapeutic terms significant differences in the time course of the ischemic damage to the intestinal mucosa. Whereas in the small intestine of the rat, the first appreciable alterations - detachment and disruption of the lining epithelium at the villous tip - are already to be observed after absolute ischemia lasting 15 min, in the human small intestine the same lesions only occur after 4 h. A comparable complete necrosi…

Estimates of the Nuclear Time Delay in Dissipative U + U and U + Cm Collisions Derived from the Shape of Positron andδ-Ray Spectra

1983

Positron and delta-ray spectra have been measured in coincidence with quasielastic scattered particles and fission fragments from the bombardment of Pd, U, and Cm targets with U beams of energies between 5.9 and 8.4 MeV/u. For collisions leading to a fission reaction, the atomic positron and delta-ray spectra fall off more steeply at high energies than expected from calculations based on pure Rutherford trajectories. A quantitative analysis of this effect is in accord with a nuclear contact time of about 10/sup -21/ s.

ABH-antigenicity of transitional cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder in patients subjected to topical chemoprophylaxis

1983

Topical chemoprophylaxis with adriamycin was administered to 49 patients with UICC-stages pTA and PT1 (pathological stage 0 and A) of transitional cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder. Tumor specimens obtained prior to initiation of the instillation protocol were evaluated with regard to ABH-antigenicity. ABH-antigens were present in tumors of 19 patients and none of these developed muscle-infiltrating recurrences during or after intravesical chemoprophylaxis. The primary lesions of 30 patients were deleted of antigens; only 5 (16%) developed a progressive recurrence. Compared to a historical control group this is thought to be a true reduction of invasive tumor recurrences in ABH-negative…

Spatial fuzzy consumer's behavior : a multidimensional analysis

1983

This paper is devoted to a multidimensional analysis of the consumer'sbehavior when the decisionmaker is acting in a fuzzy space and pointingout an imprecise attitude. At first, the process of decisionmaking is described with the help of three relationships between the set of goods which are supplied in several points, the set of their characteristics and the set of consumer's a priori possible behaviors. All these relations are fuzzy. The model applies the theory of fuzzy relations equations. Then, the stages of the decision process are analyzed. Often fuzzy comportemental relations are like "black boxes". The mathematical solution of the model indicates in which conditions their valuation…

Recent Development in Analytical Methods for Identification of Off-Flavour Compounds

1983

The best resolution of individual off-flavour compounds is achieved by glass or quartz capillary gas chromatography. A special two-column system was used by which simultaneous instrumental detection and sniffing (odour desorption) of odorous compounds could be done. The measuring detectors were flame ionization (FID), electron capture (ECD), flame photometric (FPD) and a mass spectrometer (MS). Structural assignments of the odorous substances were done from MS data and verified by model compounds. Before the GC run the sample was collected at the head of the double column using a cold trap device. The sample for analysis was injected in liquid form or, more efficiently, thermally desorbed f…

HETEROGENEITY OF METATROPIC DYSPLASIA

1983

Metatropic dysplasia is a neonatally manifest entity that is characterized clinically by a rapidly progressing kyphoscoliosis leading to severe shortening of the originally long trunk ("metatropism"). Major radiographic features include flattening and defective ossification of the vertebral bodies, a narrow thorax and a marked hypoplasia of the basilar portions of the ilia with crescent-shaped iliac crests. There is some evidence of genetic heterogeneity. From five personal observations and from a review of the literature we conclude that metatropic dysplasia comprises at least three genetic entities: (1) a nonlethal type with autosomal recessive transmission; (2) a nonlethal dominant type …

Evidence for bilateral vagal innervation of postganglionic parasympathetic neurons in chicken heart

1983

Stimulation of the cervical vagus nerves caused an output of acetylcholine (ACh) from the isolated chicken heart, which almost exclusively was released from the postganglionic neurons: (+)-tubocurarine (3 X 10(-14) M) reduced the output to 12 +/- 6% (n = 7) of the control. Stimulation of the two nerve trunks ws equally effective in releasing ACh.--Evidence that a large number of postganglionic neurons receives bilateral innervation was based on two experimental series. (1). The sum of the ACh outputs evoked by unilateral (separate) nerve stimulation of the right and the left vagus was higher than the bilaterally evoked output (100%) and increased with increasing frequencies (10, 20 and 40 H…

13C NMR study on the methoxy carbon chemical shifts in chloro-substituted anisoles and guaiacols

1983

The 13C NMR chemical shifts of methoxy carbons in chlorinated anisoles and guaiacols have been measured for acetone-d6 solutions. Multiple linear regression analysis, and also ‘simple sum rule’ calculations, have been used to estimate the effects of the chlorine atoms (the position and degree of substitution) on the chemical shifts. The most important effects have shown to be due to the chlorine atoms adjacent to the methoxy and hydroxy substituents. For chlorinated guaiacols, the greatest effect is due to the chlorine atom adjacent to the methoxy group. For chlorinated anisoles, the substituents adjacent to the methoxy group (2,6-disubstitution) cause large effects. For both groups of comp…

In two experiments carried out on two alternate days, the 24-h-rhythmicity of pineal gland volume, pinealocyte nuclear size in cortex and medulla and mitotic activity were studied in male Sprague-Dawley rats, to assess to what extent morphological parameters reflect the pronounced day/night differences in pineal melatonin formation. Pineal volume exhibited statistically significant changes in the second experiment only, with a distinct trough at 6 p.m. Karyometry revealed highly variable patterns. In the first experiment, pinealocyte nuclear changes lacked parallelism in cortex and medulla. The cortex exhibited a bimodal curve with peaks at noon of the first day and at 6 a.m. of the second …

A new proof of the support theorem and the range characterization for the Radon transform

1983

The aim of this note is to give a new and elementary proof of the support theorem for the Radon transform, which is based only on the projection theorem and the Paley-Wiener theorem for the Fourier transform. The idea is to solve a certain system of linear equations in order to determine the coefficients of a homogeneous polynomial (interpolation problem). By the same method, we get a short proof of the range characterization for Radon transforms of functions supported in a ball.

Crystallization and melting of fractions of branched polyethylene

1983

Effects of the molecular weight on the crystallization behaviour of branched polyethylene become observable if isothermal crystallization is studied at temperatures near to the melting end. Crystallinities decrease with decreasing molecular weight. Thicknesses of lamellae grown during isothermal crystallization are independent of the molecular weight. They depend only on temperature. Compared to the effect of the branches polydispersity gives only a minor contribution to the broadening of the crystallization and melting range of low density polyethylene.
