Manifestation and ultrastructural typing of amyloid deposits in the heart

Using light and electron microscopy, 65 cases of amyloid deposits in the heart were examined. Five different groups were distinguished: I. isolated atrial amyloidosis, II. senile cardiac amyloidosis, III. cardiac amyloid accompanying chronic infections and tumors, IV. cardiac amyloid accompanying plasma cell dyscrasia, V. idiopathic cardiac amyloidosis. Seen structurally, no principal differences in the precise localization of the amyloid deposits were found in any of the groups investigated. Quantitative Bestimmung von Cyclopiazonsäure in pflanzlichen Lebensmitteln

Es wird ein Verfahren zur quantitativen Bestimmung von Cyclopiazonsaure in pflanzlichen Lebensmitteln beschrieben. Nach einer Extraktion mit Acetonitril/ 4%iger KCl (180+20) und Abtrennung mit Dichlormethan wird der Extrakt dunnschicht-chromatographisch zweidimensional aufgetrennt. Die Dunnschichtplatten werden nach der Behandlung mit Oxalsaure mit Methanol vorchromatographiert. Damit konnten Schwanzbildungseffekte vermieden werden. Die Detektion erfolgt nach Umsetzung mit Dimethylaminobenzaldehyd durch Absorptionsmessung in Remission bei 540 nm auf der Dunnschichtplatte. Abstract The syntheses of the mono-adducts of 1,10-phenanthroline with SbX 3 (X = F, Cl, Br) and PhSbI 2 are described. These compounds and the 1:1 adduct between 2,2′-bipyridine and PhSbI 2 have been characterized mainly in the solid state by infrared and Mossbauer spectroscopic techniques. The structures of the antimony trihalide complexes appear to be based on halogen bridged polymers in which the stereochemical activity of the lone pair of electrons varies with the halogen, the highest p-character of the lone pair being observed with the trifluoride adduct. Systemic candidiasis developed in a seven-week-old premature baby after 6 weeks treatment with antibiotics for suspected septicemia. At that time the echocardiogram showed a dense layer of echoes posteriorly to the anterior tricuspid leaflet during atrial systole. The diagnosis of Candida endocarditis with vegetations on the tricuspid valve and with right atrial thrombus secondary to the Candida infection was verified by autopsy.

But there are plant species which show very unconstant regeneration or no reaction at all, even if the isolation showed high viability of the protoplasts. Mechanical power test and fiber composition of human leg extensor muscles.

The present study was undertaken to assess the relationship between the mechanical power developed during new anaerobic power test and muscular fiber distribution. Ten track and field male athletes were used as subjects, whose muscle fiber composition (m. vastus lateralis) varied from 25 to 58 fast twitch (FT) fibers. The test consisted of measuring the flight time with a special timer during 60 s continuous jumping. A formula was derived to allow the calculation of mechanical power during a certain period of time (e.g., in the present study every 15 s during 60 s of jumping performance). A rapid, accurate and precise method for the determination of zirconium in silicates is proposed. Insoluble or sparingly soluble samples are decomposed by means of molten sodium hydroxide. Chloranilic acid is employed as reagent for the spectrophotometric determination of Zr(IV). The limit of detection is 1.2×10−7 M and the relative standard deviation is 0.24%.

At the end of 1976 and the beginning of 1977 respectively, the EORTC Genito-Urinary Tract Cancer Cooperative Group started two randomized phase III protocols in previously untreated patients with advanced T3–4 prostatic cancer (1–3). The first trial, 30762, compared Stilboestrol and Estracyt, while the second, 30761, was a randomized comparison of Stilboestrol, Cyproterone Acetate and Medroxyprogesterone Acetate. Both trials have now been closed to patient entry and the principal endpoints of the studies analyzed. This paper will present the interim results which have emerged from these two studies.

Nucleoside phosphotransferase purified from chicken intestinal mucosa is a multisubunit protein of high molecular weight regulated by many nucleotides. The adsorption of a nucleotide effector to regulatory sites favors the conversion of the enzyme to a stable form and induces a modification of the substrate site, increasing its affinity for substrate donors. We studied the effects exerted by orthophosphate on the reaction and on the stability of the enzyme. P(i) inhibits competitively nucleoside phosphotransferase activity, whichever nucleoside monophosphate is employed as donor. Synthesis and characterization of some arsenic, antimony and bismuth complexes of 2-mercaptoaniline

Abstract The complexes of arsenic, antimony and bismuth as well as phenylantimony and phenylbismuth with monoanionic 2-mercaptoaniline are reported. IR spectra are consistent with chelating behaviour of the ligand but only a weak nitrogen to metal bonding interaction is advanced. The mass spectra fragmentation pattern is also presented. It can be interpreted with the loss of successive ligand units and, as a general feature, the abundance of a given ion decreases as the mass of the metal increases. Species with one or two protons less give more intense peaks possibly corresponding to ions containing the dianionic form of the ligand.

Liver pathology in transient neonatal hyperammonemia.

Ultrastructural investigations have been performed on two cases of transient neonatal hyperammonaemia (TNH). This newly recognized metabolic disorder is chiefly characterized by severe hyperammonaemia in the postnatal period, a comatous state, absence of abnormal organic aciduria, normal activity of urea cycle enzymes and, usually, complete recovery. The aetiology is presently unknown. For patients with colorectal malignomas and surgically nonresectable metastases, regional long-term perfusion with chemotherapeutic drugs may be valuable, according to the current view. Several techniques are used for regional long-term liver perfusion; either the arterial approach via the hepatic artery or a venous approach via the portal vein can be chosen. A long-term catheter can be implanted in the hepatic artery or the portal vein during the resection of the primary tumor or during the “second-look” procedure. In either case a laparotomy has to be done.

High Spin Phenomena in the Mass 100-200 Region Seen Through the Crystal Ball

The average properties of the gamma ray entry region and the decay from it are studied systematically, for 49 nuclear systems, in the spin spectrometer. Preliminary results are given for the mass the neutron number dependence of the gamma ray fold distribution and of unresolved γ spectra. The possibility of gating simultaneously on narrow regions of fold and excitation energy is exploited.
